What is The Pom Magazine Archive?
Mission Statement
Our goal is to preserve the history of the Pomeranian breed as captured by the American Pomeranian Club's publication, The Pomeranian Review, which has been in print since the 1960s.
Who Are We
Annie Coughlin (Charm City Poms, Baltimore, Maryland) provided the inspiration for the project, as well as devoted much time (and sacrificing her collection of old magazines) to scanning and processing the magazines into electronic documents in PDF format.
Elizabeth Heckert (Silhouette Poms, Hampton, Virginia) provided the technical know-how to make these files available via the web, as well as making the text searchable via the web application.
What is OCR?
OCR or Optical Character Recognition is a technology used to automate the extraction of written text from printed images. As the print in each issue appears sometimes in graphics, on multicolored backgrounds, and other circumstances beyond stark black-and-white text, this technology is imperfect, and that's why you will find a lot of bizarre characters in the "text" versions of each magazine. This imperfect translation however is what allows for the database to search for keywords so you can identify what issue a dog, person, or kennel is mentioned in, without having to download and look through each issue on your own. The text version is not truly intended for human eyes, but we have made it available in case it is valuable to someone. While it's not perfect, it is truly a blessing to be able to capture this much of the text from the scanned pages alone.
