This is the best way I can describe it.I have always believed judging a National of any breed is a big honor, but judging my own breed that I love and cherish is the ultimate accomplishment for a breeder judge.The depth of quality was incredible I had many classes with beautiful Pomeranians that can compete at our National level.I judged dogs and females from different parts of the world including Russia, Canada, Italy, Portugal with many bloodlines tracing back to the U.S. breeders.The presentation and grooming was impeccable, the exhibitors sportsmanship was to a very high standard to show by, and they were very friendly and kind.I had two ring stewards that help me carry on the show very smoothly, and made my job a lot easier.To the breeders and exhibitors thank you I saw beautiful bites, and good head carriage and the grand majority of them had big healthy coats and not many signs of black skin disease. Movement was good, tail sets were good but as we all know theres always room for improvement in these two departments.My top Pomeranians moved with elegance and grace. They were compact, active with profuse harsh coats with heavily plumed tails. They were alert in character with good expression, and were commanding attention as they posed for their honors.I cannot thank enough the president of the club Maria Jose Guerrero. She outdid herself promoting and delivering a fabulous National Specialty.Thanks to Mahalda Costa, Silvia Gregorio, Esther Guzman, Silvia Sanchez and Nacho Puiggros for a wonderful, unforgettable experience.Thank you. The anterior fontanel is the junction where the two frontal and two parietal bones meet. This area, commonly called the soft spot does not fuse until after birth. In humans, the soft spot remains until about two years of age. In most toy breeds, the fontanel closes by 3-4 months of age. A soft spot that never closes is called open fontanel. Chihuahuas commonly have open fontanel called molera which is considered normal for the breed.Open fontanel is not desirable in the Pomeranian, and breeders should diligently strive to eliminate it from their breeding program. The soft spot leaves the brain susceptible to injury and can be associated with hydrocephalus also know as water-on-the-brain. The abnormal accumulation of fluid in the brain cavities can cause neurologic problems or even death. It is, however, possible for a Pomeranian to live a normal, healthy life with open fontanel. I also spoke to Chris Heartz who has agreed to be my "official artist."Logo Apparel - Niki WildeWe are hoping to have people all over the world recognize the APC logo. We want people to see that logo and know whose it is. The more you can use the logo, the higher the recognition factor, the higher the recognition, the more money will be generated and the more 'advertising' the APC will get.First, I was thinking that maybe 3 different logo's would be the best approach. 1. Either the APC logo or another design, that the proceeds would go to a general fund. 2. A second logo that represents Health Genetics where a portion of the sale proceeds go to Health Genetics. 3. A third logo that indicates rescue, where a portion of the sale proceeds go to Rescue. The Board will need to determine what percentage of the sale will go towards each of these. It would be a great advertising tool to be able to say "10 of the proceeds of theJulyAugust 2009 - APC Pomeranian Review - 37sales goes to rescuehealth". Also, it gives the APC three times the 'branding' and advertising for the club, with the use of the three different logos.The usual 'bread butter' is in T-shirts. They are not expensive and everyone wears them. I would recommend having T-shirts in approx 6 colors in all sizes available in all three logo's. Next, the idea is to create 'immediacy' by having a new thing come out every couple of months approx 4 times a year and an 'old' styleitem going away. These would be aside from the T-shirts. They would be more misc. typesstyles of items.As I have been informed that there is no one that is currently doing the sales of clothing at the Nationals. I would be willing to have this included in my committee as well. I think that the National logo could be put onto to certain items and sold via the website for a limited time before and after the Nationals. Having it shipped after Nationals. Ppeople who are not able to attend Nationals can still obtain the apparel for that year. This could be marketed as a 'collection' that some will want to collect. Example "I have every years sweatshirt from Nationals back to 1989". Thus making it more marketable.I would recommend that all items be available for purchase via the website and shipped directly to the purchaser. I will talk to Kelly Reimschiissel, APC Web Keeper and discuss store options with her, after hearing from you. However I do think it can all be arranged easily and the options and accessibility for APC items would be gladly appreciated. That has been done and now I realize I need to add to it. I am also getting requests that only state Please give us the rescue contact in such in such State. So next I will ask her to add that they include more information such as if they are interested in adopting a rescue or if they need to find a home for a pom they currently own.I have been contacted by a new person Joan Dubuc in the NY area who wants to do rescue. I will have a phone conversation with her this afternoon and hopefully we will have a New York rescue person She is currently doing Dachshund rescue but also has a pom. We have no children of our own but have lots of nieces and nephews and now grandnephews and a grandniece We live in a small home on a dead end street next door to my mother, which was one of the reasons we moved here.We are currently owned by nine Pomeranians and three Maltese. Right now there are two and one half rescues recently in. Artie and Angel came together and Angel gave birth to a little boy whom we call Oreo. They all have potential homes. Thank goodness. Peter and I have done rescue work for a very long time.On a very small scale now, we still take them in whenever we can.I belong to Bay Colony Pomeranian Club having served as secretary, board member and currently treasurer. I also serve as the rescue coordinator. This covers the New England area and can get quite exhausting, but I work with folks trying to place their dogs without getting them into the foster care situation as often as possible. This club is, I believe, the oldest organized pom club. Small in numbers but, active none the less.We hold two fun days a year in June and September. This year in June is our Hawaiian Luau. We have tons of fun at these with raffles, auctions. Costume contests, agility runs, fun matches, including the best pet. We offer these to the public, our rescue folks, our pet members etc. We try and meet 4 times a year. We hold our speciality in May with the Noreast Toy cluster. This is a 4 day show and this year every day we have majors Also this year we are going to hold another speciality in November at an all breed show.Our members are diverse in activities. Agility and obedience as well as conformation. We are all friends and at shows it is the most fun as it is friendly competition.r.A EAm-TsI also belong to Naugatuck Valley Kennel Club. I serve as recording secretary and assistant show chairperson and chief steward. As well as a member of the American Pomeranian Club. I try and help as much as I can especially at the national when I know they most need it. This past March, I served as the Top Twenty Chairperson and have been asked to chair again next year. This was very exciting for me not only to help the club but to be part of such an important event. It is still trying to get off the ground as it was the third year. I learned a lot of what to do next year and what not to do. Fund raising for one. Betsy Owens is being a huge help and I thank her very much. I look forward to working with her.Well enough about me. Let me introduce my poms.My very first introduction to Pomeranians was Doo- Shays Short Circuit. I saw him at a dog show when I thought I wanted to show Maltese. I just fell in love with him and the breed.My first pom was his daughter Katie. She had a fire personality for a little dog I have ever had. She lived to be 12 years old and ruled the house until that final day. I still miss her.My first male and my first champion was Ch Doo- Shays Flyin Solo. Solo was my heart. He made myShortyKatieSolotook best juniors at the Nationals 4 years ago. He had a little fun as a veteran as well. At the young age of 10 on his birthday I woke up to find him gone laying on my pillow. That was one of the saddest days Ive had. He ended his career with 25 or so Best of Breeds, a group 3 placement and 3 best junior in shows.While for some that is small but, for someone who shows locally it was the beginning for me. He was the ultimate show dog and I have not had one since.My first champion female was Ch Southpaw of SisNBen. She came to me quite by accident but, was my fastest finishing dog. With 3, 4 point majors and 6 shows. At almost 14 she is still going pretty strong. She had one litter and that was with Shorty.They produced my first bred by champion girl Ch Hollilys a Dream for Teralee. She is owed by Leanne Wilkins and I thank Leanne for bringing her to her championship and loving her.Ashley was bred to Ch Aphrodities Donmar Desperado thank you Donna Majewski which produced HollilyNTeraleeRWildBoutWillie. TheyThe other dog from Sarah and Shorty was Hollilys Circuit Breaker, CB he needed 2 majors to finish but decided that he liked my lap more. Ok, so I tend to spoil them.CB was bred to Tabletops Tahitian Pearl and they produced Multiple group placing Ch Tabletops Black Mail Sender, and Ch Tabletops Short Fuse.j Sparky. Ill brag Sparky first cuz its shorter. While he is a looker he is more like his father and was not the showman I would have liked. He finished but, not without causing me more grey hair, like I needed that.-WFUSparkySender however, wow, he is a breeders dream. Both the boys were bred by Jan Stachurski who owned Pearl. Sender ended his career with more BOBs than I can count, he was a multiple group placer and earned points enough to be in the top twenty 3 years in a row. All owner handled. And he has produced a lovely little boy Pippin already finished and placing in the groups. Ch Tabletops Return to Sender. Sparky produced a lovely little boy Hollilys Aristocrat owned by Jeanne McNally in Maine. These nutrients range from simple sugars glucose, fructose and lactose to complex carbohydrates starches and cellulose in grains, vegetables, fruits. Carbohydrates are derived from plant life... vegetables, fruits and grains. Commercial dog foods all contain carbohydrates. Com, wheat, soy, rice, barley, alfalfa, quinoa, oats, millet... these are examples of grains commonly used in pet foods. Potato, sweet potato, peas, and tapioca are examples of other carbohydrate ingredients often found in pet food.During digestion, complex carbohydrates are broken down by digestive enzymes into simple sugars such as glucose. Once in a simple form, the sugar is absorbed rapidly into the bloodstream. Glucose is necessary in the body for energy and brain function. The liver can synthesize glucose from amino acids derived from protein and glycerol derived from fatty acids.You wont find carbohydrates listed on the guaranteed analysis of any commercial dog foods, because there is no absolute need for carbohydrates in the dogs diet. Dogs do, however, produce the digestive enzymes to be able to digest carbohydrates, so small to moderate amounts are not harmful. Large amounts of carbohydrates stimulate the dog to consume excess calories in an effort to obtain sufficient nutrients, thereby promoting obesity.While carbohydrates are generally not necessary in a dogs diet, they can be useful in certain situations, such as liver or renal issues where nitrogen and phosphorus levels need to be regulated. Carbohydrates are needed for the lactating dam, who must have plenty of blood glucose for production of milk. Puppies need some carbohydrates as they are being weaned from their mothers milk, which is high in sugar. High-performance and working dogs may benefit from some extra calories provided by carbohydrates. Grains and starches can be included in the diet, but should make up not more than about 25 of the meal. The amount of carbohydrates contained in kibbled foods is typically between 50-80-far more than is optimal.Grain-free foods are becoming popular. But the ingredients that replace grains in these20formulas are still starchy carbohydrates the one most commonly used is potato. Sweet potatoes, peas and tapioca are other high-carbohydrate ingredients used to replace grains in pet foods.Potatoes belong to the nightshade family, along with tomatoes, peppers, tobacco and eggplant. Many doctors have traditionally advised patients with arthritis to avoid nightshade vegetables. These foods are high in solanine alkaloids, chemical substances with strong toxic effects... and the greener the vegetable, the more alkaloids it contains. Green potatoes and fried green tomatoes are definitely out Sweet potatoes, however, are not nightshade vegetables they are in the morning glory family.Most plant-based foods also contain cellulose or fiber, a type of carbohydrate which dogs cannot digest. Dogs do not produce the digestive enzyme cellulase which is needed to break down fibrous plant cell walls. Fiber is generally a low- cost filler ingredient. Manufacturers also include fiber to prevent kibble pieces from crumbling apart, and to20extend product shelf life.Avoid commercial foods that include beet pulp, peanut hulls, brans and other fibrous, non-nutritious fillers. If your dog eats some raw meaty bones, he will be getting plenty of bulk in his diet. If your dog does not eat raw bones, you should include some processed fruits andor vegetables in the diet for a source of fiber.Carbohydrates should be avoided by dogs with diabetes, seizures, and hypothyroidism. Because dogs have the anatomy of a carnivore, carbohydrates are difficult for them to digest they make stools large, and produce gas. Grains and starches should also be avoided by dogs with arthritis, allergies and other inflammatory conditions. Shop for a food with a good primary animal based protein, and minimal carbohydrates.AFLATOXINSPenicillin is a mycotoxin a poison produced by a mold. Penicillin destroys bacterial cell walls, thereby killing bacteria. Man has harnessed penicillin to use for our benefit to help fight infections. Most mycotoxins, however, are not beneficial and in fact can be toxic.One of the most potent naturally occurring poisons is aflatoxin. Iraqi officials admitted in 1995 to producing aflatoxin to be used as a biological weapon. Aflatoxin is produced by the fungus Aspergillus. Foods rich in carbohydrates such as com, rice and wheat support the growth of this fungus particularly grains deemed not suitable for human consumption, that have may have been stored in a warehouse for weeks or even months.Aspergillus growth is microscopic, so you cant see it with the naked eye... and the toxins produced are odorless, so you cant detect them by smell, either. Aflatoxin ingestion in large enough amounts causes death by liver failure. If ingested at low levels over time, aflatoxins are known to cause liver cancer. In livestock, other effects are decreased growth rate, lowered milk or egg production, and immunosuppression.Kibble, due to its high carbohydrate content, is a perfect medium for growing aspergillus fungus. Once a bag of kibble is opened and exposed to air, it is more than likely exposed to fungal spores which are omnipresent in the air. If the food becomes damp it will readily support fungal growth. If you buy kibble, try to buy your food in small batches check expiration dates carefully and, once the bag is opened, switch the food to an airtight container. You might even consider keeping your kibble in the refrigerator or freezer once the bag is opened. This will help maintain freshness.Remember the huge Menu food recall Their foods were contaminated with aflatoxin from the com they used... BEFORE it was processed into dog food. There were many deaths associated with that incident. Peanuts and deadfall nuts are also commonly contaminated with aflatoxins. Aflatoxin poisoning is a worldwide problem, because fungal spores are ubiquitous.There are thousands of other mycotoxins that can be included in carbohydrate-based foods, including vomitoxins, fumonisins, and patulins. These have also sickened and killed pets, prompting recalls. The heat involved with cooking destroys the molds and fungi, but not the toxins that they produce. Mycotoxicosis has been a major problem for dogs ever since man first invented dry dog foods.STORAGE MITESDry dog foods are primarily composed of low-cost, low-priority grains with long set times... ideal breeding grounds for mold and mites. Have you heard of storage mites Storage mites are cousins of the dust mite, a common allergen. Storage mites feed and reproduce in the flours that are processed into pet food. When the flours are processed into dog food, these storage mite carcasses are then in the dog food.In a study published in the American Journal of Veterinary Research Jan 2003, 94 of dogs with allergic dermatitis had antibodies against storage mites. The study concludes, Storage mite sensitivity in dogs may be as important, if not more important, than dust mite sensitivity. Another study repeated these findings.Storage mites in kibble are likely a significant source of allergies in our dogs. If your dog is fed kibble-containing grains and suffers from allergies, storage mites could be the problem. Consider switching to a grain-free diet. And yes, rice is a grainFRUITS and VEGETABLESMany of our dogs love fruits and vegetables. If your fresh diet does not include bones, you will need to add some fruits and vegetables for their fiber content. Small amounts are not harmful and may even provide some significant nutritional benefits. Fruits and vegetables must be cooked or pureed for the dog to be able to derive any nutritional benefit from them.Berries such as red raspberry, blueberry, cherry and cranberry are often included in high-end commercial diets. These berries contain phytonutrients such as ellagitanins, anthocyanins, salicylic acid, quercitin and catechins. These nutrients have proven beneficial in reducing cancer risk, enchancing circulation, improving memory, enhancing immunity, preventing cancer, fighting infection, and easing inflammation and pain from arthritis. It will be interesting to watch further research in this areaCranberry reduces the risk of struvite bladder stones, the stones that commonly form as a result of urinary tract infection. However, cranberry can actually increase the risk of oxalate stones in dogs who are genetically predisposed to their formation. The reason for this is the oxalic acid contained in cranberries. Oxalic acid is a food ingredient that binds with calcium to form the compound calcium oxalate. Foods that contain oxalic acid often commonly referred to as oxalate should be limited in the diet so as not to create a calcium deficiency or promote bladder and kidney stones in dogs who are prone to them.High amounts of oxalate are also contained in barley, com, wheat, oats, beets, soy, figs, Bmssels sprouts, broccoli, parsley, spinach, Swiss chard, green and wax beans, blackberries, blueberries, carrots, celery, dandelion greens, grapefruit, kiwi, endive, gooseberries, okra, oranges, black raspberries, strawberries and sweet potatoes. Higher amounts of calcium may be needed if the diet contains significant amounts of high oxalate-containing foods.Fruits and vegetables should be pureed or steamed. If eaten raw, they cant be digested, and your dog wont be able to use the nutrients they contain.Cruciferous vegetables can suppress thyroid function if large amounts are fed raw. This includes broccoli, cauliflower, Bmssels sprouts, bok choy, cabbage, kale, collard greens, mustard greens, turnips, turnip greens, watercress, rutabaga, daikon, and kohlrabi. Fortunately, the thyroid-inhibiting substances in these foods are inactivated by cooking, or light steaming, so your dog can still enjoy the valuable antioxidant and cancer-protective effects of these cruciferous vegetables.Canned Pumpkin, fed in small amounts, is often recommended for digestion, to help both diarrhea and constipation.PROBIOTICSPro Bios means literally for life. The term probiotics refers to the life-supporting beneficial microorganisms in the digestive tract. There are several types of probiotic organisms, mostly bacteria of the genus lactobacillus or bifidobacteria often called acidophilus and bifidus. These bacteria help to keep disease-causing bacteria in check. Probiotic bacteria also manufacture vitamins B6, B12, K, and folic acid. When the numbers of these probiotic bacteria in the intestines are reduced through taking antibiotics, stress, or illness, an overgrowth of bad microorganisms can result. Without the probiotics to keep the pathogens under control, the dog may develop digestive upsets, diarrhea or yeast infections.Supplementing the diet with probiotics can help replace and maintain the levels of friendly bacteria in the digestive tract. They can also help maintain firmer stools. A probiotic supplement is useful after antibiotic therapy, after a parvovirus infection, and during other times of stress boarding, traveling, competition, training or after surgery. Probiotics are a useful first-line treatment for puppies with diarrhea, and are great to add to the diet of the new mother. Probiotics can help reduce the risk of infection and allergies.High heat involved in manufacturing canned and kibbled foods destroys probiotic bacteria, so it is a good idea to add any probiotics to food just prior to mealtime. Yogurt and kefir with their active cultures are great natural sources of probiotics. Commercial supplements are also available such as Bene-Bac and FasTrac. Probiotics are sensitive to heat. They are stable at room temperature, but will have a longer shelf life if kept refrigerated.The highly acid environment of the dogs stomach kills most bacteria. This explains how dogs can eat raw food, or old foods loaded with bacteria and not become sick. One common concern about probiotics is survivability past the stomach.Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria, however, are specially adapted to survive and thrive in an acid environment. The word acidophilus literally means acid-lover Lactobacilli love acid so much that they make their own.. .they secrete plenty of acid to maintain their preferred low-pH environment. In newborn animals, the lactic acid produced by these lactobacilli help with digestion until the babies are able to produce enough stomach acid on their own. This is one good reason to include yogurt with active cultures in your homemade puppy formula.Other probiotic microorganisms prefer the less acidic environment of the intestines, and will successfully pass through the stomach and continue on to the colon. There are always some probiotic microorganisms that cannot survive the extreme acid conditions in the dogs stomach that is why the suggested dosage amounts of probiotics are high.PREBIOTICSThe term prebiotic refers to fibrous substances in the diet which ferment, feed and support the growth of probiotic bacteria. Beet pulp and inulin are examples. Prebiotics are extremely helpful for horses, cows and other herbivores. Dogs are not designed to eat fibrous foods, nor do they have the capability to ferment food. They dont have multi-chambered stomachs, and they dont ruminate their food. Dogs are carnivores, and have a short and simple digestive tract. Prebiotics are unnecessary in the canine diet, and can cause gas, bloat, large stools and digestive upset.GLUCOSAMINEOne of the hottest topics in nutrition is glucosaminoglycans or GAGs. The mucoid proteins glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronate are examples of GAGs. These GAGs promote the rebuilding of collagen, cartilage and joint structures.Dogs can obtain glucosamine in their diet by eating gristle and cartilage found in meat. The commercial supplement Glyco-Flex is derived from green-lipped mussel, which is a rich source of GAGs. Glyco-Flex is used to help relieve the pain and swelling associated with arthritis.Theriogenologists veterinarians specializing in reproduction often recommend supplementing studs with Glyco-Flex to improve sperm count, quality and motility. Some commercial dog foods such as ZiwiPeak and Blue Buffalo also include green-lipped mussel in their formulas.Glucosamine supplements are not recommended during pregnancy, based on a study in rats which linked glucosamine intake during pregnancy to birth defects. More studies hopefully will be done soon in this area.SELENIUMSelenium is a vital trace mineral which plants obtain from the soil, and animals obtain from these plants. Selenium is needed to produce antioxidant enzymes, and to help metabolize fats. Other selenoproteins help regulate thyroid function and play a role in the immune system. Selenium deficiency is rare in the U.S. but is seen in other countries, most notably China and Russia, where soil concentration of selenium is low.According to the National Institute for Health, there is evidence that selenium deficiency may contribute to development of heart disease, hypothyroidism, and a weakened immune system.Three specific diseases have been associated with selenium deficiency Keshan Disease, which results in an enlarged heart and poor heart function, occurs in selenium deficient children. Kashin-Beck Disease, which results in osteoarthropathy Myxedematous End emic Cretinism, which results in mental retardationSelenium deficiency can cause cartilage degeneration and may play a role in hip dysplasia, heart disease and cancer. Too much selenium, however, can cause illness.Selenium in the natural diet is always obtained in organic forms selenocysteine found in organ meats or selenomethionine found in plants. Pet food manufacturers add inorganic sodium selenite to their foods in an attempt to provide adequate amounts of selenium. However, natural forms of selenium are more easily absorbed, utilized and stored by the body than the inorganic chemical sodium selenite.Scientists are still investigating how the body needs and uses various trace minerals. Selenium and other trace minerals such as chromium, boron, manganese, molybdenum, vanadium, copper, zinc and iodine, are best obtained through a healthy diet of whole foods, and not as the synthetic, inorganic supplements which are usually added to pet foods.FLUORIDEThere is a concern surfacing about potential harm due to fluoride fluorine, another mineral which is inadvertently included in most all commercial pet foods. Fluoride may possibly be a contributing factor in hip and elbow dysplasias, spinal dysplasias, and osteosarcomas the most common type of bone cancer. Fluoride is deposited in bones. Some communities add small amounts of fluorine to their water supplies. But how do pet foods manage to include large amounts of fluoride By the use of added mineral supplements phosphate rock, mono and tricalcium phosphate. Raw phosphate reportedly contains 3-4 fluoride.Much research on dietary fluoride has been done on pigs, sheep, goats, chicken and cattle, but there is no such information regarding fluoride intake and the development of skeletal fluorosis in dogs and cats. Because fluoride is known to interfere with reproduction, milk production, and the general health of the breeding stockdairy cows, there are strict regulations on how much fluoride can be in the food of farm animals. But there is no fluoride intake criteria for pets. This is yet another example of how a natural diet is preferable to one that includes inorganic minerals such as raw phosphate.SUPPLEMENTSThere are thousands of different vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants. There are over 4000 different known flavonoids, a class of antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables. Vitamin A has at least 15 different forms. Vitamin E also has several different forms such as alpha, beta, delta, and gamma tocopherols. Researchers discover new micronutrients every day. Each has a role in promoting good health. Whole, unprocessed foods contain a wide array of these micronutrients. Supplements cannot match the value of whole foods.We and our pets need to obtain these micronutrients through foods, not as synthetic supplements. Synthetic vitamins are usually less efficient because they are chemically created or reduced down to one specific crystalline vitamin. During this process, the vitamin loses its synergistic components, such as mineral activators, enzymes and co-vitamin helpers. Inorganic minerals can also be less useful than their natural forms, as we noted with selenium.B vitamins thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and folate play a key role in metabolism - they help the body release energy from protein, fat, and carbohydrates. B vitamins are also essential for a healthy nervous system. Folate folic acid, another B vitamin, helps the body form red blood cells. Consumption of folate reduces the risk of neural tube defects, spina bifida, cleft palate and anencephaly during fetal development.A B-vitamin supplement may be advisable to ensure that your dog gets important vitamins such as thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid and niacin on a daily basis. B vitamins with the exception of vitamin B-12 are water-soluble and are safe to give daily. If you cook food for your dog, the heat involved in the cooking process destroys many vitamins, so you may want to include a daily B-complex vitamin.Vitamin C is essential for formation of collagen, and supports healthy skin and joints. Guinea pigs, humans and other primates must have vitamin C included in their diet. Dogs, however, produce vitamin C in their liver, so they do not need a dietary source of this nutrient. Dogs with fiver disease may be unable to produce their own Vitamin C and may benefit from having supplemental C added to their diet. Vitamin C is water soluble, readily excreted in the urine and considered generally nontoxic. High doses of Vitamin C inhibit selenium absorption.Vitamin C promotes the absorption of calcium so supplementary C should be avoided in dogs with a genetic tendency to form calcium oxalate bladder stones. Vitamin C may play a role in prevention and treatment of hip dysplasia. Further studies are needed to confirm this.Fruits and vegetables are rich in micronutrients. Whole grains may not be part of the dogs natural diet, but they can be useful to include in small amounts since they provide many beneficial micronutrients. Wheat germ, flax seed, rice bran, as well as bee pollen, nutritional yeast, chlorella, kelp, and rose hips are rich in nutrients such as the B vitamins and vitamin E, as well as trace minerals such as iron, magnesium, selenium, iodine, zinc, copper and chromium.In the final article in this series, we will put all this information together, and look at various diet plans. See you next timeflpc Judges 0daeationaA few words about mismarks...I would like to take this opportunity to discuss an aspect of color in our Poms that is of concern to me - mismarks. Over the last year I have had two of them entered under me in shows, one of which was in the Bred-by-Exhibitor class at a Specialty. I was very disappointed to see them, especially the BBE. It seems to me that we need a reminder of what is a mismark, and what is a parti-color.Here is the exact wording from our Breed Standard regarding parti-colorParti-color is white with any other color distributed in patches with a white blaze preferred on the head.The two mis-marked dogs that I had entered were clear orange Poms with white markings. One was completely orange except for all four feet, which were white. The other one was clear orange with a large white patch on the chest, and two white rear feet. In my opinion they should have been neutered and sold as pets, but these two made it in to the show ring. They were both last in their class under me, and would have had Winners or Reserve Winners withheld if the entry was low enough that they were in consideration. I would encourage other judges to do the same, as we do not want to encourage these dogs which are very untypical. I would expect reputable breeders to eliminate these dogs from their breeding programs, and certainly to never show them.We have completed two Judges Education Seminars since my last article. One was in Vallejo California on March 21st in conjunction with the Northern California Pomeranian Club specialty show, with 8 attendees. I would like to thank Walda Green for all of her hard work in putting this seminar together, and also bringing Poms for us to use. On May 15th I presented a seminar for the Oklahoma City Toy Group. We had 5 people in attendance there, and I was assisted by Betsy Owens who brought dogs and helped with the presentation. Curtiss Smith presented a seminar for us on May 21st in southern California in conjunction with the City of Angels Pomeranian Club activities which was well attended also. I greatly appreciate the help of all these people.I submitted a proposal to the APC Board of Directors in May to create a new Illustrated Standard Booklet, in a smaller size and more summary style than the current booklet, to be used as a handout at Judges Education Seminars, as well as other educational purposes. I would chair this project, and Chris Heartz has agreed to be the illustrator. This will be a great addition to our educational materials, and I have included in the proposal funds to mail a copy to each of our APC Members once it is completed. BassettJulyAugust 2009 - APC Pomeranian Review - 59CLONING, CONTEMPORARY CONTEMPLATIONThe Pom World might not be considering cloning issues this year, but undoubtedly this subject will be topical to the canine world in the near future. Naysayers should be reminded that the scientific world once believed artificial insemination impossible for canines. There are some related issues worth pondering besides the main moral obvious one, the question of whether cloning is itself ethical. The present scientific information it already provides is relevant now.To help grasp the state of cloning today, consider the upper level performance horse world where even the present costs make it a viable commercial option. It presently costs 150,000 to clone a horse. But using the analogy of what happens in the electronics world, the number of qualified technicians and labs will increase, and this cost will eventually be reduced. In evidence of this theory, the first foal was produced in Italy in 2003. The worlds population of cloned horses in total was approximately 30 in March 2009. ViaGen just one commercial lab expects to produce 10 - 12 Quarter Horse clones just one breed this year and possibly 25 in 2010.Thus the horse world is already faced with ethical questions that are relevant to both breeders and the breed registries. Breeders, while readily aware that this could emphasize the bottlenecking of genes caused similarly by frequent sires, recognize its restriction of population genetics. But it also could offer an expansion of the reproductive power of dams using surrogate dams for implantation. Advocates point out that cloning helps protect a breeder from losing a worthy sire or dam due to unexpected injury or death. The AKC acknowledged years ago, it might be a valuable tool to reproduce neutered service animals of extraordinary talents that were of genetic nature ex. scenting ability. It might seem somewhat fallacious today, but if strict laws demand all animals be kept spayneutered, breeders might have to consider cloning as a viable option to produce future desired offspring.How would cloning individuals cause a registry to need to evolve Should a cloned individual be tagged as such For instance, if the original individual has a particular registration number, would its clone be that same number but tagged additionally The question gets more complicated for the second and subsequent generations. Identities and parentage of an individual can be presently based on his DNA analysis. But two cloned individuals would have identical DNA. So if there existed two clones of a particular popular individual, how would you identify which of those was used for a particular breeding Scientists presently believe that two cloned individuals could develop completely different performance records, so is it a human possibility that an individual of lesser capability was substituted for a particular breeding for monetary gainEven the word sire and dam could be confusing in a world of cloning. Obviously it is not necessary to use two individuals to make a clone. One produces a clone of a particular male sometimes casually, incorrectly, termed sire or a particular female again, shouldnt be termed dam. However, the current cloning process involves the use of eggs from unknown donor females. The selected individuals DNA you want cloned is introduced to the donated females egg. The donors egg mitochondrial DNA is therefore now involved in the final outcome. It might not even be purebred mitochondrial DNA. Scientists feel this mitochondrial DNA has significant effect on the genetic make-up of clones. How much or how little phenotype observable characteristics is affected will be subject to future study. But this definitely affects subsequent generations. Cloned females will pass on to their offspring the mitochondrial DNA of the egg used in the cloning process, but cloned males will not. In normal fertilization process, the sperm cells mitochondria are eliminated, and only the eggs mitochondria are found in the resulting offspring. The introduction of the donors mitochondrial DNA therefore becomes both a breeders and registrys concern.This present scientific fact interestingly proves what the knowledgeable breeders of past generations believed. Males were capable of affecting more number of offspring but females affect more than 50 of the genetic make-up of the individual offspring.It seems an appropriate time to summarize that cloning does not advance breeding on an individual breeding case basis. It merely reproduces genetically what there is presently. However, if allowed by a registry, it could alter the population genetics of a breed. These ladies had imported many dogs from England. Radiant was the kennel name used by Viola Procter. Stackpoles Faerie Queen of Lyncroft was purchased by Gladys Schoenberg during the formative years of her Aristic Kennel in San Antonio, Texas. It was reported that the flight to deliver this bitch from Massachusetts to Texas took 25 hours.Sealand Career was also bred to Little Rajahs Pearl. This breeding produced a litter of two Ch. I decided to offer the metal article to Cream-Puff, a 7-week- old Rescue, since I always want these puppies to have had metal in their mouths while they dont know any better. G He grabbed it by the bar and trotted all over the place with it, and of course I was praising him like anything. Tessie ran after him, excessively jealous, so I let her have it, but made her reach for it and TAKE it. She took off with it and then dropped it, but I just gave it back to Cream-Puff. Next time, she held it long enough for me to get a Come, Sit, Hold, Give, and voila Next was the dumbbell, and I didnt even have to offer it to Cream-Puff, Tessie took it from the floor. She had previously been seriously resisting any attempt to retrieve, but this was the turn-around for her. A few days later, she went over the jump for the dumbbell so enthusiastically that she stood on her head at the dumbbell, came back down, grabbed it, and returned.JUMP HEIGHTThe new Obedience and Rally Regulations are out. With a cold and body malfunctions, I dont know if I will be able to survive running both dogs. Not good to get old and rickety.I Friday starts with the Standard courses and Iri and I have an awesome run. It is clean, and she collects I a lot of MACH points because she is fast. It is Shimmers first time running in Excellent and I am ' hoping we have a nice run, because the course looks good for us. Shimmer flies though the course and earns her first Excellent O. I am thrilled that we were such a good team on her first try at this level., Then I am blown away because her time is 2 seconds faster than Iris, who is 1 inch taller and 12 lb I heavier Iris Jumpers run is beautiful and we O, so she earns Double Q 9 she needs 20 for MACH and more MACH points. Shimmers Open Jumpers run has a few problems, so we dont O but we have a I nice showing.' Saturday starts with the Jumpers runs, and Iri blazes through the course and makes it look so easy. j Another O and points.I Shimmers open run was lovely, except that as she is speeding through the weave poles, her nose goes I down to check something, her rear end doesnt stop and runs up over the back of her nearly flipping her, and she pops to keep her feet under her so she doubles a pole. We go back to try again and she will have nothing to do with the spot and doubles again. NQ. Oh, well. Dramatic sighI Then come the Standard courses. Iri runs first and sails trough the course with 2 areas where she starts I to head out to the wrong jump, so I have to call her to the way I want her to go. We saved the runs, so ' she gets Double O 10 and more Mach points. WheeeeeI Then, with hardly time to switch dogs and collect Shimmer to get in line to run again, we are offI Shimmer nails the course dead on, and there isnt a bobble to be seen She slams in her second Excellent A leg and is 4 seconds under Iris time. I am soooo thrilled. Sunday starts with the Excellent Standard runs. Iri runs first and breaks her start line stay. That is not I a good situation, but hardly fatal - unless like me, for some reason, I thought NO and just moved off,I but was not in the game. The rest of the run was brilliant. I felt bad that I mentally froze and cost us the run.Then it was Shimmers turn. I set her up on the start line and lead out and were off Shimmer cleared the first jump, sailed over the triple into the arc of the jump that sheared away to the closed tunnel. I raced her to the end to pick her up and show her the 90 angle into the weaves. She nailed the entry and swamflew though the poles to erupt to run to the dead ahead tunnel. I let her run the macaroni shape and was past the double and almost to the dog walk when she emerged. 1 called to her and she flew over the jump and up and over the dogwalk, passing me as I ran past the down ramp and told her table - sit as she sailed on to it. Breathe for the 5 count and then send Shim into the tunnel next to the dogwalk, wait for her to come out of the curl under the down ramp, wait for her a tiny bit longer so she can check in, get direction to the a frame, send her on and slide across her path for a rear cross. Race her to the downside of the a-frame to send her on to the jump that has to be wrapped to a tight turn on to the teeter. Wait the little bit of time for her to get on the teeter, tell her to wait so she remembers to stop and let the teeter drop, hustle into position ahead of the teeter and on the other side while she rides it down. Release with OK and race her to the tire, push her out over the panel, hold until she is committed, turn and run like H_________ to get the last 2 jumpsWe are clean Then I start shaking and ask her what have we done 3 Excellent A Standard runs 1, 2, 3, we are into B Shimmer earned her AX in 3 perfect, 1st place runs the very first time she was entered in Excellent A friend with a Border Collie made the comment that Shimmer and his Border Collie had run the course in the same time It took me another 3 hours to realize that those 3 runs and her title of AX put her into the American Pomeranian Clubs Hall of Fame She is just over 2 years old Iri just got in, in 2007, and was 5 years oldWe still had our Jumpers runs. Iri had a beautiful run going, and I set her up to collect her coming out of a tunnel to clear a jump and change direction - buuttt, I moved a little too soon and put pressure on her path and she went inside the jump, so we NQed. While she was running the poles, I promised I would find her a better handler. Shimmer had her Open Jumpers run left to go. We got out on the course and Shimmer slammed her way though that course to earn her second Open Jumpers leg.What a weekend Iri earned 2 Double Os and 52 MACH points. Double-Qs are earned by having two perfect runs in one day. Since a dog only has a maximum of 2 runs per day one for Standard and one for Jumps with Weaves, both runs must be perfect. Perfect also called Qualifying or clean is achieved by making no mistakes and making time. The points are achieved by running under time. If the course time is 30 seconds and the dog runs it in 25 seconds, the dog earns 5 points. In addition, if the dog places First, his points will be doubled. If he places Second, his points will increase by 50.MACH is 20 double-Os and 750points MACH 2 is 40 double-Os and 1500points MACH 9 is 180 double-Os and 6750pointsTo put it into perspective, there are many dogs competing in agility but most of them will never achieve a MACH. A MACH requires consistency double-Os and speed points. Many dogs can be counted on to run a clean course, earning Os, but they do not make time. Other dogs can run fast, but are not consistent, therefore not running clean.It takes years to train a dog to compete in agility and then more years to enter enough trials to earn the necessary Os and points. Dogs will slow down with age, lose interest, suffer injury, or the handler will stop competing as frequently for a variety of reasons. To earn a MACH 9, the Pom must have spent at least 10 years in the sport and kept his drive all that time. Their program is the first new college of veterinary medicine in the United States in the past 20 years. As conference attendees, we also had the opportunity to tour the clinical learning center during lunch break.The room was filled with approximately 100 dog fanciers and breeders representing a wide cross-section of AKC recognized breeds. In an eight-hour time period there were eight speakers scheduled. Each speaker could easily have spent the entire day trying to cover their subject matter and answering all our questions but, alas, time was limited.Luckily some detailed information was included with the conference, including the book ABCs of Breeding by keynote speaker Claudia Orlandi.Id like to try to summarize some of the important points from the seminar for the Review readers.This lecture was my favoriteCurrent Concepts Regarding Canine Hip DysplasiaPeter Vogel, DVM, DACVSSpecialist in orthopedic surgery, critical care, micro vascular surgery and is certified in stem cell regenerative medicineFrom the syllabusBreeders are an important source of information regarding heritable diseases such as canine hip dysplasia. However, much of what is common knowledge is often incorrect of incomplete. Find out the most recent information regarding the diagnosis and treatment of hip dysplasia and get practical recommendations that you can employ in your breeding programs. This talk will help you understand the limitation of OFA certification, the benefits of newer screening techniques, and give an overviewof current treatment to help you educate your clients.OFA hip testing was initiated in 1966. After 40 years of OFA hip testing, the incidence of hip dysplasia in dogs has not decreased by even 1. This is because hip dysplasia is a common defect it is polygenic multiple genes involved and can also be exacerbated by environmental factors such as trauma and diet. Almost all lines of dogs have genes for hip dysplasia. This is probably due to the fact that the majority of dogs are descended from the same line of wolves, who were themselves genetically predisposed to hip dysplasia. Greyhounds are rarely affected sight hounds in general have a lower incidence than other races. Standard poodles are one of the very few breeds that are not commonly affected with hip dysplasia.Hip dysplasia typically displays some symptoms by age 4-6 months. Symptoms can include painstiffness, pop or click of the joint, bunny hopping gait, and lazy dog syndrome. The dog will appear to the owner to be lazy, when in reality it does not wish to move because movement is painful. At age 12-15 months, signs and symptoms will disappear only to reappear later in life when arthritic changes have set in. By then treatment methods are limited and expensive.The OFA hip screening is the least predictive method for hip dysplasia. It does not rule out hip dysplasia. The OFA technique is outdated 1960s methodology. The OFA screening x-ray is limited due to the positioning technique used it is also subjective depending on those interpreting the film. A better method is the Dislocation Index DI that is also known as Penn Hip. Another newer and even more accurate method is the dorsolateral subluxation radiograph or DLS that is highly diagnostic for hip dysplasia.This technique positions the dog with weight on the knees and measures actual real laxity of the hip socket.Fully 50 of dog who score OFA excellent hips will be found to be dysplastic using DI andor DLS. 67 of those who score OFA good are actually dysplastic, and 100 of dogs who score OFA fair aredysplastic.DI technique has some breed- dependent factors those factors were not discussed.Another problem with OFA is waiting until the dog is two years old for their final evaluation. Hip dysplasia can and should be diagnosed by age 14-16 weeks and NO LATER THAN age 20 weeks, so that intervention can be done to prevent future painful arthritic changes.If a puppy is diagnosed with hip dysplasia a simple procedure known as a Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis can be done. The growth plate of the pubis is cauterized to destroy the growing cells of this part of the pelvis. This results in a change in the angle of the pelvis and is 95 successful in preventing progression of the arthritis resulting from hip laxity. This should be done no later than age 5 months. It can be done at the same time as a spay. Atriple pelvic osteotomy can be done to reshape the pelvis again this must be done before the age of one year and is very effective in preventing the progression of hip dysplasia.OFA hip screening may not even be attempted in most cases until age two years when it is too late to do any preventive orthopedic surgery, and it will miss most cases of hip dysplasia entirely. Penn hip or DLS should be done on puppies no later than age 20 weeks for the most accurate diagnosis and early treatment of hip dysplasia.Other ways to control the progression of hip dysplasia are weight control, proper exercise and diet. Medications such as NSAIDS and adequan have a proven track record. The benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin have not been clinically proven but those supplements cant hurt. Stem cell therapy is in its infancy but may also prove beneficial.In conclusion, the Dr. emphasized that if you are a dog breeder, sooner or later you WILL produce dogs with hip dysplasia Dont blame yourself Even two dogs with perfect hips can produce dysplastic puppies. They kept the dog alive on a ventilator and after 11 days of touch-and-go status in intensive care, he was sent home.The next day he was brought in again seizuring from eating snail bait. The owner didnt pick up the bait because she figured the dog had learned its lesson and wouldnt eat snail bait againThe toxicity of raisins and grapes is veiy real and serious. Not all dogs are affected. The exact toxic substance within the grapes has not yet been discovered. Avoid flaxseed and soy in food as it may in theory affect hormonal balance.Thyroid test should be done on every bitch prior to breeding. TGAA thyroglobulin auto antibodies positive indicates autoimmune thyroiditis which is an inherited condition in addition, thyroid autoantibodies can pass into the puppies fromthe mothers milk and attack their thyroid gland.Brucellosis testing should be done periodically on all breeding stock, not just bitches.Teeth should be clean as the bitch uses her teeth to sever the umbilical cord and can transmit bacteria to the puppy if her mouth is infected. Vaginal cultures are sometimes done but are not very useful because the vaginal tract is full of many different varieties of bacteria naturally. Sometimes you can find Klebsiella or mycoplasma with a vaginal culture these would need treatment. However, if there is a suspected problem with infection it is better to bring the bitch in at the start of her season for a uterine culture. This is done with the aid of a fiber optic scope. Routine use of antibiotics during the breeding cycle is not wise as you upset the natural balance of flora in the body. Antibiotics should be reserved for an infectious problem which has been demonstrated by a culture.A variety of insemination options were discussed, including the use of fresh, chilled or frozen semen. Ovulation timing using progesterone and LH levels was reviewed. The canine genome shares many similarities with other mammalian species, and differs from them just by a few small percentage points.Dr. Irizarry explained how some genetic research is conducted. His team worked with mice and knocked out or removed one certain gene from the genome. The chromosome was then replaced into the breeding animal and offspring were tested to see if they were missing the gene. Then if they had two animals who both were missing the particular gene being studied, they bred those together to try to get offspring that were doubled up for the missing gene, then they would observe what effect this had. The found a gene that limited growth of muscle tissue myostatin, which, when knocked out of the genome and doubled up offspring were completely missing this gene, the animals were extremely over muscled.There were examples pictured of this effect in both mice and cattle.On Breed Identification Visual and DNAVictoria Voith, DVM, PhD, DACVBAn interactive session comprised of a breed identification quiz. All the recent arrivals were confused and concerned. They had no idea what to think for they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals that had spent some time waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was happening and began to gather at the pathway leading to the Bridge to watch. They knew this was something special.It wasnt too long before an elderly animal came into view head hung heavy and low with tail dragging along the ground. The other animals on the pathway, the ones who had been at Rainbow Bridge for a while knew the story of this sad creature immediately. They had seen it happen far too many times.Although it was obvious the animals heart was leaden and he was totally overcome with emotional pain and hurt, there was no sign of injury or any illness. Unlike the pets waiting at the Bridge, this dog had not been restored to his prime. He was full of neither health nor vigor. He approached slowly and painfully, watching all the pets that were by now watching him. He knew he was out of place here. This was no resting place for him. He felt instinctively that the sooner he could cross over, the happier hewould be. But alas, as he came closer to the Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who spoke softly to the old dog and apologized sorrowfully, telling him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their special people could pass over the Rainbow Bridge. And he had no special beloved people...not here at the Bridge or on Earth below.With no place else to turn, the poor elderly dog looked toward the fields before the Bridge. There, in a separate area nearby, he spotted a group of other sad-eyed animals like himself...elderly and infirm. Unlike the pets waiting for their special people, these animals werent playing, but simply lying on the green grass, forlornly and miserably staring out at the pathway leading to the Bridge. The recent arrival knew he had no choice but to join them. And so, he took his place among them, just watching the pathway and waiting.One of the newest arrivals at the Bridge, who was waiting for his special people, could not understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the pets who had been there for some time to explain it to him.That poor dog was a rescue, sent to the pound when his owner grew tired of him. The way you see him now, with graying fur and sad, cloudy eyes, was exactly the way he was when he was put into the kennels. He never, ever made it out and passed on only with the love and comfort that the kennel workers could give him as he left his miserable and unloved existence on Earth for good. Because he had no family or special person to give his love, he has nobody to escort him across the Bridge.The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, So what will happen nowAs he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the all-invasivegloom lifted. Coming toward the Bridge could be seen a single figure...a person who, on Earth, had seemed quite ordinary...a person who, just like the elderly dog, had just left Earth forever. This figure turned toward a group of the sad animals and extended outstretched palms. The sweetest sounds they had ever heard echoed gently above them and all were bathed in a pure and golden light Instantly, each was young and healthy again, just as they had been in the prime of life.From within the gathering of pets waiting for their special people, a group of animals emerged and moved toward the pathway. As they came close to the passing figure, each bowed low and each received a tender pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. Their eyes grew even brighter as the figure softly murmured each name. Then, the newly restored pets fell into line behind the figure and quietly followed this person to the Bridge, where they all crossed together.The recent arrival, who had been watching was amazed. The ones you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of such unselfish work. They will cross when their families arrive. She further believes that caution and care should be used when prescribing supplements orhomemade diets to ensure proper nutrient balance. Food is the least expensive and most important grooming tool available to the modem day breeder.There was no mention made of melamine toxicity, aflatoxicosis, or the many problems associated with the over processed ingredients used in most all commercial pet foods.Erika Weme gave a comprehensive overview of AKCs CHIC program.Id like to thank AKC for this very interesting and valuable symposium I hope that another will be presented in our area in the near future. VTHE AKC EFFORTS PRODUCED THE FOLLOWING RESULTS.To circumvent the American Kennel Clubs requirements, DNA testing and inspection process, puppy mills simply pick a registry name out of thin air. They dupe the public into buying a dog from a little known registry by suggesting all registered dogs are valuable. WRONG There are over 400 mixed breed registries in the United States today. Predictability of temperament, size, and type at maturity, is up for grabs Most have neither breeding restrictions nor health guarantees. The new registries popping up are too numerous to mention.Many breeders fall under the jurisdiction of the United States Department of Agriculture. The USDA inspects upon occasion however, the USDA considers these animals LIVESTOCK. Animals raised in barns, sheds, stalls, and rabbit hutches under adverse conditions lack socialization, love, and respect. Life comes and goes in wire cages. They exist only to supplement income.There is no written standard to aspire to. This results in inferior offspring from less than desirable individuals.Internet sales are at an all time high. Perfected marketing techniques encourage the unsuspecting public to pay exorbitant prices for animals with no history, guarantee, or support. Once the dog sells, the seller shuns further responsibility. THESE ANIMALS OFTEN END UP IN THE HUMANE SOCIETY THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN.ON THE BRIGHT SIDEThe American Kennel Club, established in 1884 with over 530 dog clubs, has approximately 3800 affiliated clubs in the United States today holding events and encouraging participation in the great sport of dogs. This year, the club changed the specialty location and date. The specialty was held in conjunction with the Baltimore Kennel Clubs all-breed show on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the Timonium Fairgrounds. As a first time attendee to this all-breed show, it was quite impressive. Lots of room, friendly people and great vendors The PCGB thoroughly planned the event and it was spectacular. An area on the side of the ring was reserved for grooming. Peter Dickens donated beautiful spring flowers that were expertly arranged in baskets by Jean Gates which she used to decorate our rings and tables. The trophy table was over-flowing with Quiet Time Fashion pet beds. Winners were awarded the beds as gifts. It was a fun day to be amongst all the gorgeous Poms exhibiting. Many spectators stopped to ask questions and view the exhibitors. The event started at 1245pm with the showing of the sweepstakes entries.The club thanks Ms. Pamela Campbell Dziuk for doing a fabulous job judging the 24 puppies and 5 veterans in sweepstakes. Best Junior in Sweepstakes was Dee Little Birdie Told Me bred be Christine Crane, Celeste Robert Solano and Owned by Christine and Cindy Crane. Best Senior in Sweepstakes and Best in Sweepstakes was Chars Master Titlest Tieger owned by Charlotte Meyer L Meyer K Stuart and bred by Charlotte Meyer Lynn Meyer. Best of Opposite in Sweepstakes was Lynnwrights N Sirens L-word of Lenette owned by Donna Lynn Wright and Lorelei Sibet and bred by Kenneth G. Griffith. Next came in the veterans, a class that we all love to see. They bring so many people very fond memories. We were graced by five veterans. Best Veteran in Sweepstakes was presented to CH Lynnwrights Tony Soprano ROM bred, owned and presented by Donna Lynn Wright. Chars Fancy That, bred and owned by Charlotte Meyer and exhibited by Lynn Meyer, took winners bitch to receive a four point major. Three specials entered the ring and the winner was declared, Ch. Chars Bringin Sexy Back. Justin is owned by C Meyer J D Kim Ay Jung W Lane G Johnson and bred by Charlotte Meyer Diane L Finch. There were so many Pom entries that the group ring had to wait for the BISS Pom. Lynn and Justin flew out of the breed ring to the group ring. The trophy remains in possession of the PCGB until an owner wins the PCGB specialty three times then the original trophy will be awarded to the owner. About sixty people reminisced over lunch. The PCGB held a 50-50 drawing to raise funds won by Alan Buckner. The club also held a silent auction. Thanks to all the exhibitors and guests for their contributions to the club activities. As always everyone in attendance had a wonderful time.
