Yes, that is true, there are probably fewer purebred dogs turned in to shelters in the past year or so, but certainly not because there are fewer owners who wish to relinquish their dogs.The awareness that there are rescue organizations and individuals has actually increased the number of requests by owners to turn in dogs How could this happen Here is an example of a typical call to rescue The caller explains that the family is moving out of state because of a job transfer, and they want to find another home for their dog - a two year old intact male, not on heartworm preventive, and not current on shots. When asked why the dog cannot accompany the family, the caller explains that the trip will take several days and they are stopping off at an amusement park along the way for a day and how unfair it would be to leave the dog in a hotel room for that long. No doubt you can substitute a similar tale hereUpon questioning, it is revealed that the family has owned many dogs, but because the husbands job causes them to move every year or two, they have routinely turned their dogs in to shelters when they make a move. This time, though, the shelter informed them that there is a local breed rescue group in the vicinity that will take their dog and find it a new homeIn this example, the family is quite happy to know that their latest pet wont be put to sleep if a home cant be found quickly enough by the shelter to whichthey would normally have relinquished the dog. When further discussion reveals that they did, in fact, buy the dog from a breeder, we also learn that the dog was purchased at a flea market booth and they have no idea how to contact that breeder. Furthermore, there was no contract for purchase, much less for returning the dog.So, resigned to the fact that this dog will be added to the growing number already in their care, the rescue person asks whether the caller will have the dog brought current on shots and tested for heartworms before turning in the dog. But they are moving and taking that vacation day, so money to spend on the dog is out of the question. And, by the way, can you pick the dog up today We are leaving in the morning.The Rescue Revolution is here. Who are these rescuers In general, they are people with a love for their breed who probably joined a local breed club to be more involved. When they learned of the number of their beloved breed who are losing their lives in shelters from situations such as the one described above, they contact the local rescue group for their breed - or form one if none exists. Expecting support from the other Club members, they begin to take in dogs from shelters and individuals. Fostering them in their homes, they see to health needs, evaluate temperaments, and search for new. permanent homes for the dogs who have become lost from their former home or cast off by uncaring owners who will be buying a new puppy as soon as the family feels the need for a pet again.Without a plan or an active committee to raise funds for these rescuers, the local club is unable to provide money for help. In a short time, the financial burden from caring for even a few extra dogs can become too great for one person. Even a small, organized group often cannot raise the needed funds to keep veterinary bills paid current and continue to feed thePage 8premium dog food that they prefer for their dogs without an aggressive fundraising program. Dogs requiring heartworm treatments continue to add to the weight of the burden. If a dog with a medical emergency comes into the rescue program, there is no way to prevent euthanasia, lacking the money to provide the treatment needed. It is a sacrifice too great for many. They feel helpless to continue to rescue their cherished breed and give up, leaving more dogs to fall into the endless sleep of euthanasia.The Rescue Revolution is here. But it has not become an educational tool to help owners understand how to buy from a reputable breeder who is concerned about the puppies they produce for the lifetime of the dogs. Rather, it is a vehicle for guilt-free relinquishment of the dogs bred by irresponsible, backyard amateur puppy producers and puppy mills.Why not allow the continued disposal of these dogs through euthanasia at shelters One serious consideration is the statistics that can fuel breed specific legislation. Large numbers of specific breeds being destroyed at shelters can lead to bans or controls that affect all responsible owners and dedicated breeders and exhibitors. Breed bans affect us all. Another factor is that most of the dogs in shelters are temperamentally sound, wonderful pets that simply may not be up to breed standards in looks. They would make great pets in the right homes and deserve an opportunity to live out their lives with aloving family.As individuals, clubs, and national organizations, we must all work to improve the publics perception of what it means to be an owner who is committed to their pets and willing to be responsible for them for the pet's lifetime. We must educate those who consider themselves breeders about accountability and the need for accepting the moral obligations inherent in bringing puppies into thisworld that is already overpopulated with dogs. Become involved with your breed Help with education. And make a donation to the breed rescue organization of your choice as a part of your annual giving plan to provide assistance to those who rescue. Please become a supporter of rescue. What can I do to helpFor severe motion sickness problems, your veterinarian may prescribe a drag that can help. These drugs are highly concentrated and must be used with extreme caution on toy dogs. I feel that using natural herbs to treat car sickness is a much safer route, and have been very successful doing so. Fifteen minutes before traveling, I give a small slice of fresh peeled ginger root wrapped in canned food, meat, or cheese. Choose a treat that your dog particularly likes to hide the taste of the ginger root. Do limit the amount of food given in case your dog vomits during travel. A pinch of powdered ginger can be used if fresh ginger cannot be obtained, however fresh ginger works better. Most grocery stores carry ginger root in the produce section. Fresh ginger will stay good in the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator for weeks. I also place 2 or 3 drops of essential oil of Peppermint and Lavender on a paper under my dogzEs crate pad. Placing the crate in a front seat and making sure plenty of fresh air is available may also help. They see the handlers gamer the majority of top wins and hear the ringside chatter that the handlers have an in with the judges and that the fix is on and only the handlers will that day. BullMany neophytes cant handle their way out of a paper bag. Many make their dogs look so bad they couldnt win if they were showing Lassie incarnate.As these neophytes progress, so do their skills, but, by and large, they dont stack up in trimming, training and conditioning with expert professional handlers. You will note I said expert. Handlers come in various gradations of skill just like actors, judges, lawyers, etc.Many moons ago AKC licensed handlers and its requirements were tough. Basically, would be- handlers had to serve apprenticeships under other handlers, have adequate kennel facilities, be recommended by their mentors, and be fiscally responsible. Then, and only then, would they be granted licenses and be allowed to call themselves professional handlers. Many of the top notch handlers of today came through that system.Unfortunately, because of legalproblems, AKC dropped their oversight ofhandlers. For many years anyone could call themselves an agent or handier. This caused a great many problems in the care and handling of dogs. Finally, in .1999, the handier associations banded together to askthe AKC to again take the responsibility of overseeing professional handlers. This new oversight program is about to come to pass.Most new exhibiters start by showing their own dogs. When they become discouraged with their lack of winning, they turn to handlers, and if the handier is successful with their dogs, never venture into the showring again except at matches.Well, my friend, if this is your plan youve got the cart before die horse. Recognize that you probably are not going to look like one of the worlds greatest handlers in the ring at first-dont expect to In fact, you may be better off putting your dog with an expert handier and observe how he shows and trims your dog. Watch carefully how the dog is posed, gaited and prepared for the ring. Pay for your lessons early in the game from the best and then try your wings.You will find that with a role model your performance will dramatically improve. You will learn what the judge looks for, how to behave in the ring and how to stack and gait your dog properly. It may well be your salvation as an amateur handier, and by learning to compete with the best of them you can WIN on your own.If your dog consistently wins or places high in the Best of Breed competition you could have a top winning show dog on your hands. However, to achieve his full potential, your dog must be shown to his full advantage-and this is something the beginner is probably not experienced enough to do yet. This is the reason that why most top winning show dogs are shown by professional handlers, and not by their owners. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but in general this holds true. However, once you gain experience showing, it is possible that you could show and compete with the best.Page 28The best way to search for a handier is to study dog magazines for your breed, Dog News, The Canine Chronicle and Show site magazines are especially helpful. The handler can bathe and groom the dog properly before each show.Although a handler prefers to take a dog on a full-time basis, sometimes he will agree to show your dog as a ringside pick-up. In other words, the handler will meet you and your dog at the show, and will groom and show your dog that day.The ringside pickup arrangement can be beneficial to both owner and handler under certain conditions. For example, the handler may not have room for your dog if he already has a full load of live-in dogs. Thus, a part-time arrangement may be the only way for this particular handler to show your dog. Additionally, for the dogs owner, ringside pick-up is much less costly than a full-time arrangement. On the other hand the handler may not be able to show your dog if there is a conflict with the schedule of his full time dogs.Handlers usually charge a flat rate to train, groom and show a dog. This flat rate typically includes the show entry fees and transportation to and from the show. In addition to this flat rate, there can be additional charges, includinga. board, which is usually based on the size of the dogb. any necessary veterinary assistancec. a bonus for winning or placing your dog in the Group or Best in Show competition.Handlers may provide you with a rate card and should provide you a contract for services. You might want to take the contract home and study it before making a decision. Note the following important pointsAny additional compensation based on higher awards First-call chargesWhen a handler may decline to continue handling dog.Given the expense involved, you might want to develop a plan to help you better to afford the services of an expert professional handler. For example, you could wait until your dog is 15 months old before showing it. This would give the dog time to mature, and would also allow you to save money for the dogs show career. Next, you could ask your handler to consider showing your dog as a ringside pick-up until the dogs championship is finished. Then, if your dog finishes easily, and you want to further pursue his show career, you may turn your dog over to a handler for six months on a full-time basis. At the end of that time you could reevaluate your dogs potential career as well as the ambitions you hold for your dog.Page 32PERFORMANCE NEWS AND VIEWSby Barbara McClatcheyRESCUE AND THE INTELLIGENCE OF POMSA friend who shall remain nameless you know who you are once said that Poms are not quite the smartest of the smart. She had tried to teach her Poms to use the doggie door, she being on one side and her husband on the other, coaxing the dogs through. It took her 10 days. After much experience with Rescue dogs, I have to tell her that she went about it the wrong way. Poms, like other dogs, will learn based on the perceived reward. For a Pomeranian, the company of his person is the best possible reward, and I have had many Rescue dogs learn after just a short time outside that the best way to get to a person is to come in through that little door. Oliver Twist, my current 8-month-old Rescue Pom, learned in about 5 minutes. When barking didnt bring me to open the door, he scratched at the little window. Lo and behold, it moved Scratch again, push, and Here I am, are you happy to see me Well, actually, no, I wanted you to go potty And this is a dog with a dangling broken leg. It was mis-set by a vet elsewhere, but thats another story. Im now figuring out how to get the money to try to fix it.MORE REALLY BASIC TRAINING TEACHING YOUR DOG TO COMEWhen you command, Fidea, Come Fidea should come running to you from wherever she is and allow you to take hold of her collar. This basic training can then be followed, if desired, by the more formal Come command of Obedience competitionHistory The mother dog in the wild expects instant response when calling wanderers back into safe territory. In this instance, as in many others, we keep our dogs in an infantile state for their own safety.Rationale Unless your dog will come when called, she will always be her own dog, instead of yours. A recall that allows you to grasp her collar will provide for her safety and your convenience.Uses You can call your dog from the yard when you need her to come in, call her to go for a walk, call her for a meal, call her to go for a ride. In an emergency, you can call her when she has escaped from your yardhouseleash. Because you want her always to respond, it is essential that 99 of the time, coming to you should be very pleasant. NEVER CALL YOUR DOG AND THEN PUNISH HER, GIVE HER A BATH, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE SHE DOESNT LIKE. If you must call her just before a bath, do something else in betweengive her a treat and play with her for two or three minutes.Teaching Show Fido the treat in your hand. Call him to you from the 1 foot distance and give him the treat, saying, Good Come, Fido. Now, with a treat in your hand, have another family member hold Fido by the collar, while you excitedly call, Fido Fido Fido When you say, Fido, Come the person holding the collar should release it so that Fido can ran to you to get the treat. Next, trade placesyou hold the collar while someone else calls the dog to get a treat. Once Fido understands that Come means treat, begin to take hold of the collar before giving the treat. Get other family members involved also. There are, of course, any number of possible ways to teach this, but this is mineTHE UKC DIRECTED RETRIEVEIn the AKC Directed Retrieve exercise, the dog and handler stand in the center of the ring, with their backs to the wide end of it while a steward places one of three gloves near each comer and one in the center, the center one being about 20 feet from the dog and handler, the others further. On order from the judge, dog and handler turn to face one glove, which the dog then retrieves on command. For instructional proposes, I am going to assume that the dog already knows this exercise.There are two Directed glove Retrieve exercises in the UKC Utility class. The first is the Directed Marked Retrieve, and is the easiest to teach. Dog and handler stand in the center of the ring near the ring barrier. The judge directs a steward to place the gloves in full sight of the dog near the ring barriers, one in the center of the each long side of the ring, and one in the center of the wide side of the ring. The judge tells the handler which glove to send the dog to, 1 being on the handlers left, 2 straight down the middle of the ring, and 3 on the right side. The handler turns if needed to adjust the dogs position to face the glove, and uses a hand andor voice signal to send the dog for the glove. The exercise finishes as in AKC. It requires very little to teach an experienced dog to work this exercise. The handler needs to pointedly place the glove where the dog can see it, and be sure that the dog understands the Mark command, in which he receives a reward for looking in the right direction, as well as when he goes to retrieve the correct glove. Any method that has been used to teach the AKC Directed Retrieve can be used here in a similar way.The exercise that requires some real understanding on the part of the handler is thePage 36Directed Signal Retrieve. In a trial, whichever glove has been used in the Directed Marked Retrieve is replaced in full sight of the dog, who is sitting with the handler in the same position as for the previous exercise. This time, the judge tells the handler to send the dog down the center of the ring the handler, without an additional order from the judge, tells the dog to stop and sit when he is half-way down the ring, approximately between the 1 and 3 gloves. He is now equidistant from the three gloves, and probably has his back to 2, though this is not required. The judge tells the handler to send the dog to one of the gloves, not the one used in the Directed Marked Retrieve. The handler must give the dog a signal, which may be combined with a command, to retrieve the glove and return with it to the handler as in the previous exercise.There are three problems lurking for an experienced dog in the Directed Marked Retrieve these can largely be avoided by careful training1. The dog may confuse the go-out for the glove with the go-out for Directed Jumping. This can lead to his stopping half-way on the directed jumping go-out, or to his failing to go all the way if he is given the 2 glove to retrieve in the Directed Marked Retrieve.2. The dog may confuse the glove retrieve signal with the Directed Jumping signal. A dog that does this may look for a non-existent jump instead of going straight to one side or the other to retrieve the glove.3. The dog needs to learn how to take signal direction from a distance for a center retrieve.Training helps1. Use a different command for the Directed Retrieve. I use the word Away, which I do not use for Directed Jumping. When training, I begin by teaching the dog to retrieve the 2 glove using the command, Away Two It a pun of sorts. When he is comfortable going the full distance of the ring, I will sometimes command him to sit when he reaches the glove, go to him, and reward.2. Begin teaching the signals from a position in the center of the ring, with the dog sitting directly in front of you, the 1 glove being on the side of the ring to your left his right, 2 behind him at the center of the far side of the ring, and 3 being on the side of the ring to your right, his left. Use a different signal for the Directed Signal Retrieve from that you use in Directed Jumping. For Directed Jumping, I sweep my hand and arm up from my side into a horizontal position. For the Signal Retrieve, I first bring my hand up to my chest, palm facing the dog, and then move it out in a horizontal motion. I also name the gloves as I do in any Directed Retrieve Take One. Take Three. The signal I use for 2 glove also starts at chest level. My hand then moves straight forward as if I were pushing the dog away, and I use my command Away Two It3. When the dog is comfortably going to any glove from the center position directly in front of you, begin to place him and move back a few steps before sending. Do not rush this part you dont want him to lose what he has learned and become confused. As he and you develops confidence, you may move further and further back, until you are positioning him in the center of the ring, with yourself at the center near the barrier, from which you can send him to any of the three gloves.4. Meanwhile, as a separate exercise, continue teaching the Away command, to which you can now add the Sit. I alternate sending the dog Away Two It to get the glove Away and then when he is partway there, Two It Away with a Sit near the 2 glove go out and reward Away with a Sit in the center of the ring go out and reward. I am not at this point combining the two halves of the exercise, the AwaySit and the signal retrieve. I teach them entirely separately.5. On order from the judge, dog and handler turn to face one glove, which the dog then retrieves on command. For instructional purposes, I am going to assume that the dog already knows this exercise.There are two Directed glove Retrieve exercises in the UKC Utility class. The first is the Directed Marked Retrieve, and is the easiest to teach. Dog and handler stand in the center of the ring near the ring barrier. The judge directs a steward to place the gloves in full sight of the dog near the ring barriers, one in the center of the each long side of the ring, and one in the center of the wide side of the ring. The judge tells the handler which glove to send the dog to, 1 being on the handlers left, 2 straight down the middle of the ring, and 3 on the right side. For instance, I would not send him Away Sit in the center of the ring twice in a row, and I would send Away all the way to the end many more times than Away Sit.LEARNING FROM STATISTICSDespite the well-known set of comparatives Lies, D- lies, and Statistics, we can learn something from statistics. The 1999 AKC performance titles are a case in point. Pomeranians are eligible for Obedience, Agility, and Tracking titles. We earned 24 Obedience titles, 75 Agility titles, and no Tracking titles in that year. There seem to be far more Poms competing in Agility than in Obedience. Why might this be First of all, the statistics remember Lies, etc. are somewhat skewed by the fact that most Agility competitors get both Standard and Jumpers titles at approximately the same time. So many of the 19 Novice Agility titles will be going to the same dogs that received some of the 23 Novice Agility Jumpers titles. The same is true for the other levels. What else can we say about it It is more common-and easierfor dogs to be able to receive two sequential titles e.g., NA and OA in the same year in Agility than the two equivalent titles e.g., CD and CDX in Obedience. Also, there are twice as many titles available at each level, i.e., Novice Agility and Novice Agility Jumpers, etc. Dogs can and do start competing in either of these classes, and the difficulty of moving from one to the other is practically non-existent.rJohn David releases Keoki at the Flyball line.And then frankly, as those of you who have competed in both Obedience and Agility know, Agility is more fun"exhilarating" is the word that comes to mind. There is always something different in the pattern, and the quickened heartbeat from running and the surge of blood to your brain are incredibly stimulating. A dog that barks with excitement is not penalized, as happens in Obedience. Agility placements come fromPage 40iKeoki pushes off the Flyball box with ball, heading back toward the hurdlestiming, Obedience from perfection, and it can be harder to get excited about perfection. Also Agility, as proven on the Animal Planet channel, can be an exciting spectator sport. You dont have to know the rules to enjoy watching dogs run an obstacle course. Perhaps the best comparison is between watching a chess match and watching the Olympics. You have to really know and love chess to enjoy watching it, but anyone can see which runner is ahead in a race. But my heart is still given to Obedience.NATIONAL PLACEMENTSIn addition to the American Pomeranian Clubs annual awards, which are given only to APC members, there are two national rating systems for all breeds. The First and Foremost formerly Shuman system records points on a cumulative basis for the calendar year, January 1 to December 31. All the white champions were overweight, so there was no difficulty in tracing their downfall to the fatal day in 1915 when the challenge bitches were mated to any sort of dog in the hope of breeding small sables and small stock. This was successful, the puppies being mostly wolf sable and pretty parti colours. All traces of white blood-lines have now been lost though an occasional one turns up from time to time. It is unlikely that we shall see much of them in the future.BeaversBeavers were never a popular colour and were usually sports from other colours. Several were shown in the early days of the breed. They are rarely bred today owing to the fact that present strains of popular colours being established for so many generations.Parti-ColoursParti-colours, like beavers, are sports from other colours, usually between whites, blacks and shaded sables. Parti-colours and tri-colours are often typical well-coated, and very pretty. It is a great pity that they are no longer seen today.Black and TanBlack and tans are not often see on the show bench. Quite a few turn up in litters today, but are not a popular colour and as stated in the Breed Standard are objectionable and should be discouraged.BluesBlues at one time attracted much attention, and I think that most of the present day fanciers would like to own one. Blues need breeding with great care and kept strictly to their own colour generation after generation. Today it may be said that they have practically ceased to exist. The blues that come occasionally from blacks, browns, and sable dogs are flukes, and cannot be relied on as brood bitches are stud dogs. Their progeny frequently revert back to the colour from which they were bred.Browns and ChocolatesBrowns and chocolates once were veiy popular. It was a hard task trying to breed good browns and chocolates, while young puppies gave promise of sound colour, only one in 50 fulfilled their early promise of sound colour. Even when young puppies had changed their coats and were ready for the show ring, they could not be exposed to strong sunlight or sea air,Page 48because the colour would be ruined. It would, therefore, hardly be wondered at that the browns were neglected in favour of other hardier and more striking colours.BlackBlacks are once again beginning to appear more often in the show ring. Blacks can be mated to blacks or chocolates or vice versa, and it is advised to keep the sound colour free from sable mixtures. The public fancy for blacks was very great at one time. It waned when the craze for sables and oranges began, and unfortunately many good black bitches were mated to other colours in the effort to produce sables. Very few breeders now devote themselves to breeding blacks.CreamsCreams may now be termed as sports from other colours. Blacks, whites, shaded-sables and oranges are all apt occasionally to throw a cream. They are so pretty and attractive that it is surprising that some breeders have not taken them up and tried to produce some pure strains.Wolf SablesWolf Sables are often blessed with such grand coats of length and density and harshness so often denied to the most showy orange sables, and are remarkable typical specimens. Some of the most beautiful Pomeranians have been of this colour, and it is regretted that true wolf sables are becoming rarer for they may help to improve or strengthen some points such as coat and type, in which other colours are weak.Shaded SablesThere have been some lovely varieties of shaded sables and no wonder they are one of todays most popular colours. The varieties are endless, fhll of colour, and there is nothing wrong provided that it contains the three shades required in the colour rule set down in the Standard ofPoms laid down by the Club for shaded sables.Chocolate Tipped SablesThis colour has never been popular, and in spite of the fact that some beautiful dogs have been bred in these shades, their liver nostrils and eye rims give a weak expression to the face, lessening the character of the dog.OrangesOranges were a long time before they made headwayfawns and creams frequently being misnamed this colour. They had the same defect as in the chocolate tipped sables, but they have now lost this fault, and the black nose and eye rims are to be seen today. In breeding orange, choose a sire and dam as dark in colour as possible and with as few shadings as can be found, letting the colour be as brilliant as possible without any suspicion of fawn about it.QuestionAccording to a dog care book, hot spots is a skin disease that occurs mainly during the summer. What causes these red, sometimes oozing patches of skin to occurAnswerHot spots, pytraumatic dermatitis, is a bacterial skin infection caused by self-mutilation. Haikus Akuna Ma Tata Chibi has recently come out of retirement and completed his championship in three consecutive shows as a puppy and is a group winner. Ch. Starfires Ah of Haiku Alii completed his championship in 1998 and is sired by Ch. Starfires Superman. Ch. Sandalwood GH Charm of Howlene Charmer loves to show and could always by counted on to show to her fullest. At 10 years of age, Ch Woodroses Princess Heidi was the oldest dog in the ring. Although she had not been on a lead since completing her championship 8 years ago, she still strutted her stuff.Our show was followed by a raffle which was a huge success. This was our second raffle and proved to be even better than last years. Our secretary, Judy Leadbeater, was in charge of the raffle and was able to solicit a variety of practical and coveted items. Special thanks to Judy Leadbeater for organizing the raffle, to Margo Koga for soliciting such nice donations, to Robie Thompson and Janelle Leadbeater for manning the tables and selling tickets, to Karen Tamashira for selling so many tickets and to all the people and companies who donated items.Our judges dinner was held at our favorite restaurant with the crab legs and prime rib buffet. We all enjoyed the wonderful food and each others company until all too soon the restaurant closed and we were asked to leave.
