Two family crises were all I could think about. My daughter Rachal was expecting our first grandchild on February second. On Thursday January seventeenth, the obstetrician decided that the baby was getting too big and scheduled her to be induced on Tuesday the twenty-second. Fine. I began scrambling to get things in order at work lesson plans made, worksheets copied as I was supposed to be present throughout labor and delivery. On Friday night January eighteenth, Rachals Field Spaniel Reggie got out of their back yard and disappeared. Now Reggie wasnt just a beloved pet. An English import, he was the number seven Field Spaniel in the country before he was two years old. He had just returned from Spaniel Club where he had won first Award of Merit. Rachal and his other owner S. R. had big plans for this dog. Numerous wonderful dog people spent the weekend hunting for him, putting up posters, making phone calls, visiting vets and shelters. Nothing. Not a trace. Nothing like a crisis to find out whom your friends really are.Tuesday morning arrived and we hadnt heard a word. Not a single siting. Now we had to concentrate on getting the baby safely into this world. About four PM the ob I have to watch myself to keep from saying vet decided that Rachal had tried hard enough and that a C-section was necessary. Andrew Logan Sager, the next generation of Junior Handlers, was bom at 525 PM. When Rachal was wheeled back into the room, she asked me to take the baby off her chest, as he was heavy. I struggled to pick him up. She was right he weighed ten pounds and four ounces The C-section was the right call as he had been in danger. Now his little nose was bruised. I was annoyed at myself that I let my worry over Reggie dim the joy over Andrews birth. My husband and I stayed with the new family until eight PM, then went for dinner. I got home a little before ten, when Rachal called to say Reggie had been found He was injured but alive and Scott Rachals husband was on his way to the emergency vet. Two huge sources of joy and gratitude in one day Now I can write this column. wZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZftyftLater, I will write about some of the things we learned about searching for a lost dog. For now, Ill simply say, that one should hang on to hope, keep looking, and never underestimate the power of prayer, 'ZZZZZft wZZZZZZZZZZZZZZflZZZZftyAs you read this, reservations are made, entries sent in, puppies leash broken, suitcases packed, and were ready to head for three days of fun and excitement in Louisville. It saddens me that some of you will not be able to join us due to family commitments, financial constraints, or difficulty getting time off from work. I understand every year I must carefully hoard my vacation days and my money so I can get to the specialties. But it is worth it Even if you have nothing to show, it is a wonderful time to be with some of the greatest people on earth and see lots of delightful dogs. It is our time to socialize, leam, evaluate, and maybe buy a dog or plan a future breeding. 'tanOur question for this issue is I have just started showing my Pomeranian puppy. Can you help me understand how points work and how many he needs to become a ChampionIn order to become an AKC Champion of record, a dog or bitch must win a total of 15 points under at least 3 different judges. He must have 2 major wins meaning that he wins points at 2 shows worth 3 or more points. The majors must be won under 2 different judges and the balance of points must be won under a different judge or judges. In each show, points are awarded to the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch of each breed ONLY. In other words, only 1 male and 1 female of each breed can win points at any show.Dogs and bitches do not compete against each other in the regular classes for points. There are 5 regular classes for dogs Puppy Dog Class, Novice Dog Class, Bred by Exhibitor Dog Class, American Bred Dog Class and Open Dog Class. Likewise, there are 5 regular classes for bitches Puppy Bitch Class, Novice Bitch Class, Bred by Exhibitor Bitch Class, American Bred Bitch Class and Open Bitch Class. Depending on the breed, the classes may be further divided by size or color Pomeranians may be divided by color as follows Open Red, Orange, Cream, and Sable Open Black, Brown, and Blue Open Any Other Color, Pattern, or Variation.The winners of each class compete against each other for Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. The number of points that the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch earn depends on the number of dogs or bitches they beat that day. In division 8 which is comprised of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, it currently takes 2 Pomeranian dogs or 2 Pomeranian Bitches to earn a point. The maximum points that can be earned at any show is 5. It currently takes 19 dogs or 20 bitches to earn 5 points in division 8. The current points required for Pomeranians and all other breeds can be viewed on AKCs web site httpwww.akc.orgdicptschedule.Once the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch have been decided, a Reserve Winner will be named. If the Winner is disqualified for any reason, the Reserve Winner will receive the points. Immediately following, the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch will advance to the Best of Breed Class.Champions of record may also be entered in the Best of Breed competition. The maximum number of points that can be earned is 15. Thus, Champions of record do not compete for points, rather for the opportunity to win Best of Breed and advance to the Group and Best in Show judging. From the Best of Breed Class, the judge will choose Best of Breed and Best of Winners from the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch if neither of these received Best of Breed. If the Winners Dog or Winners Bitch wins Best of Breed, heshe is automatically Best of Winners. After selecting the Best of Winners, the judge selects Best of Opposite Sex.The Best of Breed winner will now go on to compete in the appropriate Group. There are six groups Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, and Non- Sporting. Pomeranians compete in the Toy Group. The winner of each group then competes for Best in Show. Although only one dog and one bitch of each breed receive points at each show, he or she will receive the same number of points as any dog or bitch he beats. For example, if the Winners Dog received 3 points and the Winners Bitch received 2 points, and the Winners Bitch then beats the Winners dog to become the Best of Breed winner, she would receive 3 points instead of 2. If she were to go on and win the Toy Group beating a Poodle who had won 4 points, she should receive 4 points. If she were then to go on to win Best in Show beating a Cocker Spaniel who had won 5 points, she would receive 5 points. He said buy the best bitch you can, take her to the best producing stud in the line you are working with and keep only the very best puppies. Carlenes father had a few TennesseeWalking horses that were shown thus we attended many horse shows. As a matter of fact that is how we met. I was a high school friend of Carlenes brother and kept my horse boarded at their farm.Carlene and I bought our first Poms in 1970. We purchased a bitch for our daughter as a birthday present. She was a nice pet but that was all.She was the love of our family and lived to be fourteen. I guess I always wanted to be a breeder, I just didnt know how.We had attended a few shows in Lexington, Kentucky where we were living at the time and I got the show bug. I started to read all I could find about Poms and Pom breeders.I found there was a very well know breeder in Chattanooga where Carlenes parents lived. We bred Rachael our first pom to Margaret Tankerslys Ch Dixielands Stylestepper. HeWe had purchased a very pretty show male, called Corky, from a breeder in St Louis, Missouri. I put him with a handler who showed him eight months and got one point. As I look back on the pictures I realize he had about the worst back legs of any dog I have ever had. No one at the time told me why he was not winning, I just kept paying. We were young and had three small children and quickly decided this hobby was too expensive. We sold the puppy and show dog as pets and got out of the breedingshowing business. We spent the next fifteen years raising and educating our children.The tuition paid off as all our kids are finally out of school each with at least one degree. Our oldest daughter Marti is a housewife and mother here in Chattanooga. She is a draftsman by trade and her husband is an RN Administrator. Our Middle child Anna lives in the San Francisco Bay area and has three degrees, the last being an MBA. I took her advice. In retrospect he was a wonderful dog. He had dark red color and very harsh coat. If my memory is correct he looked more like CH. Millamors Dance of Sourwood than any other dog I can think of and I dont think they were related. We got one puppy that was nice and should have been shown.works as a Financial Analyst for one of the few dot.coms still in business. Our son Jason is in Seattle WA working for Goodrich Aviation. He had a lot of job prospects here in the southeast before September eleventh.In 1988 when Prince Charming won Westminster, I got the show bug really bad. I called Ruth Beam to inquire about purchasing a show bitch that was big enough to breed. Ruth was very nice to such a novice. I am sure she got quite a laugh when she hung up. Of course she did not have anything, but did refer me to Ken Griffith. I bought a bitch out of CH Great Elms Something Special Great Elms Dorothy of Lenette, aka Scooter. Just about everything I have goes back to her. I developed a very good friendship with Ruth and have spent years driving back and forth to Charlotte. I have breed to several of the Great Elms Champion studs, but my favorite was CH Great Elms Master Mark ROM. Mark is the sire of CH Great Elms Mr. Chips ROM, and the full brother to CH Great Elms Prince Charming.I got two litters out of Mark.Ruth Bean has been my inspiration in breeding. Her knowledge of poms is overwhelming, along with many other subjects. I could not ask for any nicer and more patient mentor.Logan is far the best thing that has happened to Mountain Crest Kennel. He has sired nine champions and three more are major pointed. Logan is producing at a ratio of forthy percent of his puppies finishing. If the major pointed dogs had finished before November first, his ratio would have been fifty percent. Until recently we had not bred him outside of our kennel so I am curious if this percentage will hold. He will be five years old by the time this article is published still very young. Hopefully he will have many more champions.Gordons other two champions were out of a special little bitch we aquired from Jackie Klein, Silver Meadows Lady Diana. We lost Diana immediately after the birth of her son and daughter. One of those tragic emergency clinic sections on New Years Day. Diana did however leave 2 beautiful off-spring, CH Mountain Crest Little Bit of Silver and CH Mountain Crest A Touch of Silver. Nothing is better than to see your babies winning around the country and know you made a few good decisions that got them there.In the fall of 1995, Sherri Alspaugh and her mother Carolyn visited our house to look at our dogs. I later ran into her at a show where we were both showing. We struck a friendship which has lasted for years. Sherri finished my first home-bred champion, CH Mountain Crest Jumpin Jessie. The breeding of Holly, Mountain Crest Miss Hollywood to Topper, CH Heartlands Top Notch Tradition which produced Logan was her idea. Sherri has helped me tremendously with grooming and showing. SheWe purchased Kojack from Dr. Morris Carson. He has the sweet pretty face that Emcees is known for. He is now a vital part of our breeding program and has consistently produced this pretty face. Listen to people and dont get mad if the advice is given in a truly constructive way. You dont have to take their advice but at least listen.Several years ago I met Bronya Johnston at our local show. I was showing Kojack, CH Emceesfinished, and one is major pointed.New comers to the dog world will have picked one of the toughest breeds to raise if they have chosen Poms, but without a doubt the bestAnyone that is trying to get started in poms should read, read, read, read, and read a little more until they cant find anything else to read and then start going to all the shows they can.Try to find a breeder as close to home as you can with the kind of dogs you like. They should alsoPomeranian Review MarchApril 2002 - 25have some kind of winning record so you can feel comfortable they have the knowledge needed to help you leam. Dont try to tell breeders what you know, try to find out what they know. Keep quiet and listen. Soon you will be able to decide how you want to run your breeding program.Establish a good relationship with the best veterinarian in your area that is experienced with toy dogs. Many vets have a one size fits all attitude and that wont work with our Poms.They are different. We are lucky, we do have a good vet who is for the most part willing to work with us. He is very expensive but we have a trust that is worth paying for.I have attended a Pat Hastings Puppy Evaluation seminar. She has a lot of information and it is hard to absorb it all in a weekend. Her research is sound and is worth the expense andfor show, breeding or to place in a pet home. In the end you are the one who has to make the decision. You need to be as educated as you can be, because at best it is an educated guess and more of a gamble.We start training the minute the puppies can eat food. Part of show training is teaching them to eat out of your hand, holding them, laying them on their backs, playing with them so they get socialized. We start putting them on the table to get them use to it but dont start intense training of standing in place until they are older. No matter how much you train, or think you have trained things can change in the show ring especially the first time or two a puppy is entered. I remember one episode, the first time this bitch was in the ring. She was beautiful and doing everything right until Carlene went on the down and back. For some reason when she got to the judge the puppy turned and ran the other"Pi-aONGrand-Children Harrison and Sarah Brown David and Carlene Gilstrap 1971time if you get the opportunity. I have tried to follow the guidelines she teaches. I need a refresher course, but I know it has helped me. Pats evaluation procedure is only for structure legs, bite, chest, etc.. It does not cover type. All our puppies are evaluated, according to Pats instruction, at eight weeks old. We have seen this work. I will have to admit sometimes it is hard to have an adorable eight week old puppy and his legs not meet her standard. Then you have to make a decision whether or not to keepdirection. So be prepared for some embarrassing moments but dont give up, there will be plenty of good ones.Our puppies are bom in our bedroom. The pregnant mother is brought into our bedroom around seven to ten days before the first whelping date. We keep them is 18 X 36 wire cages. Yes, we do use heating pads. I know this is a controversial issue with some of you but we have had no problems with the pads. We are however, very cautious. We never put the26 - Pomeranian Review MarchApril 2002puppies directly on the pad or in the bed with them. What we have found to work is to put the pad under the whelping box, a towel or something between the pad and the box and to use what-ever bedding inside you like. We do like to use something the puppies can grip to so they can maneuver around. This method gives constant low warmth but never hot and there is no way the puppy can get burned even if it gets directly on the box.It took me at least five years to come up with a kennel name. We had a mountain home on the very edge of the bluff. We lived there full time in the early nineties and that is where the name Mountain Crest comes from. Currently we live on seven acres at the foot of a mountain I dont think Mountain Foot Pomeranians has the same ring to it, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I would like to say this is the perfect place but unfortunately our city has annexed us. The city has also hired a new animal service coordinatorspent several years trying to decide how to build it, how big, etc. I made one big mistake. We have walking horses and needed a new bam so I decided to build one large building, two thirds for the horses and one third for the dogs. I had a company to draw the plans. The kennel would be insulated and have plenty of thermal windows, air conditioned, heated and have plenty of work space with a sink and hot water. It all sounded good and it looks good, but I forgot about the flies that the horses draw in the summer. I had never had a problem with flies around my dogs before. Now I do and it takes a lot of fly spray to control the problem. If anyone knows of real cure for flies at a bam please let me know.It is hard to thank all the wonderful people that have helped us. We all know that anything can happen to puppy flyers so I didnt get too excited about him as a special as he still had some maturing to do.While we were waiting for him to grow up, Jack and I decided to have some fun and take some dogs to the Canadian National was in Ontario along with all breed shows in the same location. The location was beautiful and the Canadians were wonderful hosts. That weekend he quickly finished his Canadian Championship by going Winners Male at both the Pomeranian Club of Ontario and the Pomeranian Club of Canada and at one of the all breed shows. I have bred and shown dogs for 20 years always looking for the ideal dog. Starting with Chihuahuas and then 8 yrs. ago I started to look for a Pomeranian. My first Champion Pomeranian took 5 years to find. The second 3 years and what a dog he isTexas, as he is called at home and by his friends, is a clear, deep orange. He has a short level back, a high tail set and is sound on all four legs. He is not able to put his feet down wrong. He Is a showman in every sense of the word. He loves to show and never lets me down.Texas was chosen for me by Barbara Holder of Houston, Texas hence the nickname Texas at 2 months of age. Barbara wrote me when he was 2 months old and asked if I still wanted a show male. Of course I wrote back a great big YES. As I was moving to a new home, I had her wait until he was 4 months old to ship him, As you know at that age his coat was very bad but that great soundness was there and all we had to do was wait for the coat to come in.At 10 months of age Texas was shown and went RWD for his first two shows. We then went to San Francisco for the Northern California Pomeranian Club Specialty summer show. It was a two show weekend. At Richmond Dog Fanciers Texas went BOW for 4 pts. Then on to the Specialty where he again went BOW for 5 more pts. He was just 11 months old.The next weekend home again for a BOB and Group 3 and another 3pts. The following weekend another show and another great big 5 pts and a Group 2. Texas finished at 3 days past 1 year old.To date. Texas is li years old and has 2 Specialty Best In Show, 2 Group 1st, 3 Group 2nd 4 Group 3rd and 2 Group 4ths in 11 times shown as BOB. Two of his placement were made as a class dog.Texas personality is as great as his showmanship. The hindquarters like those of the Collie, should be similarly clad with long hair or feathering from the top of the rump to the hocks. The hair I on the tail must be, as previously described, profuse and spreading oyer the hack.COLOR-The following colors are admissible Black, brown, chocolate, red. orange,I cream, orange-sable, wolf-sable, beaver, blue, white and parti-colors. The blacks., blues. browns and' sables must be free from any white.and the whites must be free from lemon or any other color. A few white hairs in anv of the I self-colors shall not absolutely disqualify but should carry great weight against a dog. Tn I particolored dogs, the colors should be evenly distributed on the body In patches. A dog with a white foot or a white chest would not be a parti-colored dog. Whole colored dogs with a white foot or feet, leg or legs, are decidedly objectionable and should he discouraged and cannot compete as whole colored specimens. In mixed classes where whole colored and particolored Pomeranians compete together, the preference shouldif in other points they are equals he given to the whole colored specimens, Sables must be shaded throughout with three or more colors, as uniformly as possible, with no pitches of self-color. Oranges must be selfcolored throughout and light shadings through not disqualifying should be discouraged.Poms AbroadEnglandThe reigning sensation in England continues to be Mrs. Dykes Ch. Lady- Fair of Hadleigh. On top of the three challenge certificates CCs she had won at the time of the June issue, she has added 3 more CCs and 1 reserve CC in 4 championship shows. The four shows were the Pomeranian Club, Leeds, Chester, and Blackpool championship shows. She has been best of bred BB at 5 of the 7 championship shows this year. Mr. Fred Cross, in giving her the BB at Blackpool, reported, . . . pleasing to the eye and lovely to handle, must be one of the best ever. Mr. Tom Gascoyne, the judge at Leeds, commented, . . . fortunate are they who possess one of any breed as near the ideal. In view of such glowing praise, it was exceptionally sensational when Mrs. OToole placed a 6- month puppy bitch owned by Mrs. Stan Parsons Ofleda over Ch. Lady Fair at the Chester championship show and relegated her to the reserve challenge. With Ch. Lady Fairs monopoly of the fair sex, there obviously have been no bitchchampions made this year other than she.On the other hand, the field in dogs .should have been wide open after Ch. Wilmscote Wee Caress departure to America following his monopoly of the tickets CCs for the first three shows. But Mrs. Dykes Ch. Wee Model of Hadleigh moved back into the limelight and took the tickets at Blackpool and Chester. He was Mrs. OTooles BB at the latter over the bitch puppy. The club show had a new CC-winner in Mrs. Morton-Smiths Shamrocks Red Admiral, a young dog that had been doing some excellent winning at locals and open shows. Unfortunately, he had dropped his coat by Leeds. At Leeds, Mr. Tom Gascoyne was surprised to find the 1957 Crufts winner looking so well.The dog CC, he wrote your editor, I gave to Mrs. Paynes Peacehaven Sun- star and gave myself a surprise. This is a handsome dog which left a not good impression when I last judged him 20 months ago. Bob Flavell handled him, and although I knew he was coming . . .I was so absorbed that I had forgotten and didnt recognise himthought he was Bobs old champion, Wee Cadet. He looked remarkably well. I now know who had trimmed him and cut him down to size. He was beautifully presented and appears to have fined somewhat. He moved straight. I had to think myself into the decision and the more I reasoned the more he won.The championship show of the Pomeranian Club, held on 3 May 1958 in London, had 100 entries. The club president, Mrs. M. L. Clarke, was present with three poms. Some will recognize the name as belonging to the breeder ofPomeranianReviewSeptembermRiverleigh poms. Not many may know, however, that she is well along in the 80s, although many will agree that the challenge of breeding and exhibiting poms is obviously conducive to health and longevity. Mrs. Isabella M. Faulkner showed Redapril Springheather, winner of the special brood-bitch class and a pom that is interesting from another angle. She was out of the last litter sired by Ch. Dandy of Erimus, who is well known here for his progeny in America. Speaking of stud dogs, Ch. Zambo of Zanows preeminence was again confirmed by the fact that the top four in open bitches at the club show were sired by him, including Ch. Lady Fair. Ch. Wee Model of Hadleigh, previously mentioned, is also a Zambo offspring.Just as the deadline approached, word was received that Mrs. A. Gascoynes Glamour Girl of Morrell took the bitch ticket at the Cardiff championship show over Ch. Lady Fair. She, too, was a puppy born August 1957, but has already had an enviable start in the large open shows and has always been in the money and pushing hard in the championship events. She is by Ch. The scissor type of nail trimmers do a nice neat job, but you may find grinding the nails works for you. You need to get someone to show you how to use a grinder, and use it yourself as well, before you go out and purchase one.With the small straight scissors trim all the hair between and around the pads. You are not trimming the top of the foot, just the underside.Stand the dog up and pick up each foot and trim the hair in an upward angle, as if the scissors were pointing at 10 oclock. Do this on each foot just to get rid of any hair up to but not on the foot.9. wm AWu38 - Pomeranian Review MarchApril 2002The LegsSpray the legs just to dampen them with a waterless shampoo like Pro Line Rinse, or with plain water. Dry with a towel and then rub a small amount of Chalkmate or Kolesteral into each leg. Stand the dog, one leg at a time, in the chalk container. With your toothbrush you want to pack the chalk carefully into the leg coat. To do this, you pick up some chalk on the brush and starting at the bottom of the foot, pack it into the coat by brushing up and into the hair. Carefully work up the leg until it is done. Do each leg the same. Put the dog into an ex pen on white paper to allow this to dry, twenty to thirty minutes. Put the dog back up on the table and brush the chalk out with a stiff bristle brush like a nail brush or small vegetable brush. When all the chalk is removed, brush the coat on each leg up with the mini slicker.Starting with the front legs, facing the front, get down to the level of the table. Draw an imaginary line straight down either side of the dog. With the straight scissors, trim away any hair that sticks out beyond that line. r'Amm iN i\V'Turn to the side profde, brush up with the slicker, trim, brush, trim. You are only taking off tiny bits of hair each time, but you are aiming for straight legs and no toes. By leaving more hair in the hollow area where the foot joins the leg, you fill in the imaginary straight line. Continue on the other front foot.The rear legs are trimmed, by first lifting up each leg and trimming the hair on the back of the hocks. Brush up the coat on the hock with the mini slicker. With the straight scissors, trim off the ragged hairs. Stand the dog on the table, stand back and see if he needs more off. There will be an optimum length, that does not make the dog look too heavy boned, or too light. Go carefully at first. Remember to check what you have done each time by having someone move him for you.Back on the table, trim the front of the back foot as you did the front foot, ie. short at the nail, leaving the coat longer at the top of the foot to blend with the leg coat. Remember to keep the coat brushed up.Pomeranian Review MarchApril 2002 - 39The EarsThe goal is to make the ears as small as possible. Place the ear leather between the thumb and forefinger, move your fingers up until you can feel the end of the ear leather.Place your fingernail over it to protect it and cut across the top of the ear at the end of your nail. You obviously need short fingernails.If you want to change the appearance of the set of the ear, you may want to, in the case of a low set ear make an outside cut at about 2 o clock very ^ ^ close to the leather. Let the coat stay longer on the inner side of the ear.Make the second cut at the opposite angle but not close to the leather. Then brush the coat on the ear backward with the mini slicker and shake in some brown powder or chalk. This will help it to blend into the head coat.yVw.5sf ^srK'40 - Pomeranian Review MarchApril 2002The TailTrimming the tail should be done slowly and carefully. Check the outline of the dog moving and standing by putting him in an ex pen and on a lead. The point of trimming here is to remove any hair which mins the desired shape.First be sure that the anus is trimmed short, in a circle about the size of a quarter. Never shave the tail You must always keep the desired shape of the Pom in your mind as you trim and work toward that. The tail should lay flat on the back, the plume of the tail should angle up to the top of the head in a nice smooth sweep. The tail hair will not fall backwards if a few careful cuts are made to the top of the tail bone.Check that the tail is well set. Place the flat of your hand against the buttocks. If the tail set is low, the tail bone is the first thing you feel protruding out past the point of the hip bones. If the tail is low set, all this trimming will just make it more noticeable. Careful trimming can make it look better, too much trimming can make it look worse.Take your first cut, by holding the scissors parallel to the tail bone and cut into the top of the tail coat. Brush out the hair you cut. Now move the dog again and take another cut only if it is needed. Repeat if necessary. So much of Pom grooming are very small changes, then check how it looks.I hope through the illustrations that you may develop a better understanding of this beautiful, endearing breed that is not so often poorly groomed as it is incorrectly groomed.Skitd, 'ZtecLttfThere is no trimming chart for a Pom, they are not trimmed like a Poodle, but you must always keep the outline foremost in your mind. Never scissored, but neat. I like to trim the ends off the tail. I think it gives a nice neat finish, but dont take more than a quarter of an inch off.If the tail is excessively long, it may have a hard time staying on top of the body coat. You may find that it needs trimming. Trim it back until it reaches just behind the tallest point of the mff. It would be wise to start with tiny amounts, stop and check how it lays when the dog moves, and make another cut if needed. The last cut should be done with the thinning scissors. She is my first Specials Pom. Am I proud YOU BET YAMI had told Callie as we were going to Akron, Ohios Winter Classic, that my goal was to get a Best In Show in 2002. Callie says, Dont worry Mom we will make it.Friday morning finally arrived and Callie was anxious to get back in the show ring. Mrs. Joyce Fortney a breeder judge , was our judge on Friday. I showed Callie in the breed. We won the breed then on to the group under Judge Mr. Robert Smith. Bobby Barlow, Callies new and best friend, showed her in the group. Oh my, a Group 1 with all the fine dogs in the ring was great. The Best In Show Judge was Mr. D. Roy Holloway. Here we sat all tensed and couldnt hardly breath, and there goes Callie around the ring just strutting her stuff and says, Look at Me I am the only dog in this ring. When Mr. Holloway says, THE POMERANIAN, Oh My what a great feeling. Callie looked at me and said, HAPPYNEW YEAR MOM. I couldnt wait to get the phone and call Sharon Hanson, her breeder. Sharon was happy but she has heard this about her dogs before, as we got off the phone her remark was Katy I am very proud of you and Callie be sure to call me tomorrow and let me know what happens SOOOOOOO calm.LOLSaturday comes and here we go again. Callie, Charlesand I decided after all the excitement Friday if we could just get a group placement we couldnt complain. Bobby Barlow showed her to the breed and group Judge Mrs. June Penta. We won the breed and Group 1. I thought Oh My this is just too good to be true. The Best In Show Judge was Mr. Donald M.Booxbaum. When the Judge said, THE POMERANIAN I thought they were going to have to call 911 for Mom and Dad.I just set down in my chair and cried. I was so happy. BACK TO BACK BEST IN SHOWS I just couldnt believe. And there was Callie looking like, Did I do it right Another phone call to Sharon. This time her answer was, WHAT I thought you didnt do anything because its so late. Well, call me tomorrow.Sunday comes, the last day and snow. We said we would get an early start home because no way could we could go Best In Show again. Once again Bobby comes to get Callie. I had seen my first Pomeranian and began my search of the newspaper ads to find one for sale. On, a cold winter night 10 degrees below zero accompanied by a friend, we traveled to Wheeling, West Virginia to see the puppy that was advertised in the paper.The little Pom was a scraggly, 5 month old orange sable female. I thought she was cute and she kept hiding under my chair. The person who was selling her kept playing that up, and of course, I fell for it. She also called the puppy a little pixie which I later named her. She was priced at 75, but I only had 58, and the lady accepted it.Pixie grew to be about 6 12 pounds, and we thought she was just beautiful, but I know now that she was definitely pet quality At about a year old she got very very sick. One vet thought that she had gotten poisoned, and gave up on her. Another vet said it was Lepto. I was beside myself, so scared that we were going to lose her Many tears were shed. It was touch and go, for several weeks.My family and I visited her often at the clinic where she was kept in isolation. She lost so much weight and a lot of her coat. She went down to about 3 12 pounds and seemed to be nothing but bones and hair She was too weak to even stand. Eventually the vet thought that she was a little better, but couldnt get her to eat a bite, and wanted to send her home, thinking she might eat for me. I was very skeptical about that, but took a little ball of raw deer burger to the vets office to offer to her. It was one of her most favorite treats. I had decided that if she wouldnt eat it that I would refuse to take her home. Well, she just wolfed it down to our delight It took a long time for her to get back to her old self, but she became one of the toughest and most healthy dogs that I ever owned.Pixie was our baby for years, before we adopted our son and daughter and after too. Everywhere we went, she went. We sneaked her in to NO DOGS ALLOWED campgrounds, and told her to be real quiet. I crocheted and knitted her lots of cute outfits. One of her favorite things to do with us was to go fishing.One time we were fishing at my parents farm pond. My husband, Pixie, and I were in a little rowboat, and John stepped on to the shore too quickly and swamped the boat. I didnt know how to swim and literally sat there stunned, as the water was quickly filling the boat, covering all our fishing gear Pixie was on one seat and me on the other, just going down with the ship. Actually John managed to get us both safely out, but we sure were a mess.When Pixie was about 7 years old, I decided that I wanted to breed Poms. I couldnt wait for the two females that I had purchased to grow up, so I asked the vet if I could still breed Pixie. He thought that would be ok since she was in good health and not terribly small. She had a couple of litters, free whelped. At almost 13 she still wanted more babies, and tried very hard to steal other dogs puppies. She would sneak down the hall to the bedroom, and more than once, while the other mom was taking a break, I would find Pixie in with the babies happily washing them and trying to nurse them.48 - Pomeranian Review MarchApril 2002We trained Pixie to do a lot of little tricks. She would sit up and beg, cry real tears if you scolded her, and stay on command for several minutes even when you went out of her sight. She would have made a great obedience dog.Another fond memory was a particular Thanksgiving when I had roasted a duck and all the trimmings. We had all retired to the living room to relax after dinner, leaving all the food still on the table. When I returned later to start clearing the table, what was left of the duck was no longer on the plate OR the table Pixie had it on the floor, enjoying it immensely I accused John of giving it to her, since he was always feeding her table scraps, but he denied the whole matter. I knew then, that Pixie had jumped up on the table from a chair and stole the duck herself We laughed many times about that.Our little girl was spayed at 13 years old, because of some mammary tumors. She also had an accident that I never have forgotten, about a year later. John was on heavy medication at the time, and rolled out of bed, falling on her. He was somewhat groggy and was wedged between the dresser and the bed, and the dog was under him When I managed to get her out from under him after much screaming and screeching on my part I thought that her back was broken never mind my poor husband but my vet assured me that it was only a slipped stifle. He put an odd looking apparatus on her leg for several weeks, she did fine clonking around, and walked normally after it was removed.At 17 years Pixie developed some more tumors malignant this time but I still was not ready to lose her. As I think back, I believe I should have had the vet put her to sleep then, but I just couldnt. He agreed to do the surgery. I think we both assumed that she would not make it through, but we had to try.She was truly amazing and did live through it, but only for another 3 or 4 weeks. I will never forget my Pixie. He stated, Animals who are food allergic go through sensitive periods that can last as long as one year. If they are exposed to a lot of different proteins during this sensitive period they can, in fact, become allergic to more and more protein sources until you run out of choices. Current belief is that it is important to wait at least a year after symptoms begin before attempting to change diets to avoid causing more allergies. What does this mean to me Until now, it was commonly thought 30 days was enough time to do test runs on dietary changes. Now, this is saying it MIGHT not be enough time to fully evaluate a change. Going one step further, if you have an animal with food sensitivity changing diets frequently might set up more sensitivity. Bottom Line Have a plan And you might need to consult your vet or allergist to help you formulate a course of appropriate action.SEISURES I am so glad to see a scientific confirmation of something long time breeders already knew. From the same newsletter, I will quote. Seizure disorder is a mysterious disease and many cases are undiagnosible. However, now there may be an answer for many of our patients who suffer from seizures. While recently attending the Annual Veterinary Dermatology Seminar, I was intrigued by some very exciting news. In a yet-to-be published study it has been found that a significant number of dogs suffering from seizure disorders are, in fact, food allergic, resulting in their seizure disease.I definitely witnessed this to be the case with my daughters toy poodle. Very often veterinarians are hasty to label seizures as epilepsy...particularly in a breed that is noted to be a likely candidate for this disorder. After a dietary change, this dog never had another seizure...before averaging six per month.EYE INJURIES If you notice something wrong with your Poms eye, it is NOT a wait and see situation. I mean you cant think Ill observe it for a couple days and see if it gets better on its own. Or, Ill try this and see if this makes it better. If you do, your Pom is in danger of losing its sight. The eye has a different type of response that the rest of our bodys immune system. It takes a canine ophthalmologist to make the proper sight saving decisions. Thank goodness there are now Board certified specialists in just about all locations. A small untreated scratch can cause a cloudy cataract-like lens.Any time you notice blood in the eye, it is an emergency situation. Even a minor injury needs to be monitored during the long healing process. The iris the colored section of the eye can adhere easily to the lens creating an irregular pupil. Small amounts of blood inside the eye globe, even if just resulting from a mild trauma, take a long time to dissipate and meanwhile could tear the retina. Ill repeat, blood in the eye is a life-threatening situation.It takes specialized instruments to monitor the injury and specialized medications to maximize benefits and minimize risks.PLANNED C-SECTIONS If you are fortunate to have a trusted vet that will do a c-section no matter what time of day or night it need be done, consider yourself very lucky. More of us are faced with going to emergency vets who rather be doing something else. Or, others have been offered price incentives to schedule c-sections during working hours. Even though this is paralleling human medical options, Im not sure it is to the best interest of our breed.One step better in a compromise might be to induce labor to give the possibility of a natural delivery during clinic hours. I am posing a question to all of you. Have any of your vets used the drug Lutalyse for these purposes It is used in humans and farm animals small goats for this purpose. He was consistently winning the breed and his percentage of group placings as well as group wins made me wonder if he was capable of winning a Best In Show. Well, you never know if you dont try, so I set a goal of a Best In Show. He achieved that goal on August 6, 2000 under Ms. Bonnie Clarke. Cant get any better than that. Or so I thought.........The next two days he won the breed and group Is. On the fourth day at the Louisville Kennel Club show he was again Best of Breed. He won the Toy group and then went on to Best In Show under Mr. Michael Faulkner over the nations top specials.I now had a decision to make. I hadnt planned on specialing Dudly another year. My intention was to take him home and get on with my breeding program. I couldnt do both so I had to decide if he would have a specials career or I would have a breeding program. I chose to special him one more year. Since He didnt have a backer, I had to suspend my breeding program and put all the Poms that were class dogs away for a year. Do I regret the decision No.Dudly went on to pick up three more Bests under Mrs. Jane Kay, Dr. Klaus Anselm and Dr. Asa Mays.In September we went to beautiful New Orleans. The trip was wonderful. There Dudly won the La Cajun Specialty under Mrs. Joy Davison. This win was quite an honor. Dudly then went on to win both all breed shows that followed the specialties.Dudly is a true showdog, giving his all every time he is in the ring. Whether it be with his first handler Pam, then Jeanne, then Sue Talsma who campaigned him to his BIS wins, to Tony Cabrera who graciously showed him at the Eukanuba Classic in Orlando. He has always thought that dogs shows were made just for him.Dudly had just blown his coat and I worried that he wouldnt have enough coat to be competitive at the APC National in Louisville. I wondered if I should even enter him but I knew if I didnt, he would grow coat like crazy right after the entries closed. I wasnt going to enter the following all breed shows for that very reason. I was concerned if he would have time to recoat. Jack said that if I didnt enter him, he would most certainly grow enough coat...Murphys Law. And I was going all that way so why wouldnt I enter So, I took his advice and entered all four all breeds. My next goal was to win a National, not to show him another year as a Special. To say that I was stunned at what Dudly did that week in Louisville is an understatement. He started off with an Award Of Merit at the APC National under Mr. Melvin Beech. The following day he won the breed and a group II.54 - Pomeranian Review MarchApril 2002Dudlys career totals to date are five Bests In Show,19 Group Is, 20 Group IIs, 17 Group Ills, 14 Group IVs and 92 Bests of Breed. Our remaining goals are to reach that 100 Bests of Breed mark. And then there is that illusive National Specialty win. Our main focus however, will now be finding his worth as a sire and starting up our breeding program again. If his son, Ch. But Im not hearing much of it at the moment. Please write to me so I will have something to report on.AUNTIE BARBARAS HOUSEHOLD DOG TRAINING SOLUTIONS3 As a dog training instructor, Im frequently asked how to solve problems.In many cases, what turns out to be the best thing is not to train the dog to not do something, but rather a solution so simple that you clap your hand to your head and ask, Why didnt I think of thatPROBLEM Dog usually a puppy chews shoes.SOLUTION Put your shoes in the closet and close the door. Puppies usually outgrow this if they dont practice the habit when young.PROBLEM Dog eats the tootsie rolls from the cat box.SOLUTION Keep the litter box clean. Or if you cant be home all the time, keep the cat and box in one room and the dog in the other while youre gone.Some problems, on the other hand, require some minimal training. ]PROBLEM Dog runs out the door whenever it is opened. 0SOLUTION Attach a house line to the dogs collar. This is a very narrow six foot leash, the cheapest you can ijfind, with the loop cut to open it up to more than six foot. Let your dog run around with it on so that he doesnt jjthink it is any impediment to his activity. Go to the door. The dog will go to the door too, obviously, since that is the problem. Step on the end of the leash, maneuvering it so that you can stand on the end and operate the door at the same time. Point your finger at the dog and command, You wait Open the door. Let the dog go jcharging out and hit the end of the line. With a small Pom, you may want to put your foot at the five foot mark ]instead of the very end, but you must allow him to actually think hes escaping. No I said wait Bring him jback in, close the door and repeat until the dog gives up and stays inside. Immediately reward the good behavior 0 of waiting on command. I like to use half a Cheerio, which I always have a supply of in my pocket. The owners took the mother in to the emergency clinic when she had been in labor for twenty four hours. She had one puppy dangling and three inside her. The clinic did a c-section and necessary hysterectomy. The owners said they couldnt pay the bill, and walked out. The clinic called the nearby shelter, and the shelter director picked them up and called me. He said the mother had one necrotic nipple and was not caring for the puppy. Actually, that entire breast, half of the next one, and across the incision was a sickly yellow-green in color. The bitch spent the next 3 days in the hospital, and I am hand-rearing the male puppy. ] She, by the way, is recovering nicely now. Baby is 14 days old today, and seems to be thriving. Foster Mom me has hickies on her fingers from his very strong suction power BTW, the bitch had fleas, but not heartworm, thank goodness.Another Rescue will come soon from a near-by shelter. A.K.A. the pound. Please do what you can to help people near you who rescue Poms.
