TRAUNERIf any of Dollys friends were asked to use two words to describe her, the phrase Grand Lady would surely follow. Dolly was well educated and had the gift of a brilliant mind. She was truly a lady of grace who used her talents to bless the lives of others. She had a great love for dogs and has left a mark on the Poodle and Pomeranian breeds that will never be erased.Dolly began with Poodles, establishing Phyner Kennels in 1957. Shortly thereafter she met her best friend Julie Moreno. Julie said that Dolly became her guiding light. They worked together to produce a qualityby Annette Davisline of chocolate Toy Poodles. In 1967, Julie became mesmerized by Pomeranians. She won Dolly over to her new passion and they gradually phased over to the Pomeranian breed exclusively.Among her numerous accomplishments, Dolly and Lawrence Trauner, M.D., Julie Moreno, and a few other friends established CERF Canine Eye Registry Foundation in 1974. Said AKC Chairman Jim Smith, I am aware of few individuals who have contributed more to canine health than you. Your pioneering work for well more than two decades on canine eye disease has been an invaluable contribution. She worked as a full-time volunteer running the CERF organization from her home until she turned it over to Purdue University in 1988. I have always used you as a role model for what can be accomplished through clear thinking, sound planning, and persistent effort.You will always be one of my heroes.While serving as President of the American Pomeranian Club,Dolly spent many hours working on the Pomeranian Standard revision approved December 9,1996. Just months before her death, Dolly wrote on her Memory Lane questionnaire that her greatest accomplishment in Poms was all colors allowed. Dolly was a Life Member of the APC.Dolly was always willing to help novices get started in the breed and passed on her vast stores of knowledge whenever shecould. She bred and owned numerous top winning Poms, including one of her all-time favorite girls Ch. Phyner Joie D Vivre who was the number one Pomeranian bitch in 1994. In French, joie de vivre means joy of life, a quality that Dolly herself certainly possessed. She co-owned and financed theshow career of AmCan Ch Morenos Perri Winkle, the number three Pom in 1993. Dolly suffered a devastating stroke in 1995. Her mind was still clear and brilliant, but she was not able to communicate verbally, write, or care for her dogs like she wanted to. It was extremely frustrating to Dolly to have her active mind trapped within a body that would not do what she willed it to do. Julies health shortly began to decline as well, and they were forced to trust the care of their precious Poms to others. I will always be grateful that they entrusted Perri to my care and also made it a mission to pass along as much knowledge as possible. Dolly sent me boxes of software and wonderful dog books, including many that have been out of print for decades. I feel honored to be their keeper and to have known this truly grand lady. By we, I mean my daughter, Rachal, was Chairman and Secretary her husband was Advertising Chairman and driver. I did hospitality, and close friend Sandra did trophies. I suspect a small, hardworking group of people is typical of most specialties. Because of my background in chairing the Gaines regionals, we put a lot of emphasis on exhibitor comfort and going the extra mile to make things really special lots of food, huge goody bags, and plenty of decorations.I asked Rachal what my budget was. She said to spend what I needed to. It would be better to have leftovers than not have enough. The event showed a profit of over 2000 One reason this was possible was generous contributions. One individual donated all of the gorgeous rosettes and all of the sweepstakes prizes. One woman sent a check to cover judges corsages. Another sold a significant chunk of the raffle tickets.Field Spaniels are one of the rarest AKC breeds. There is only one Field Spaniel Specialty a year. There are no local or regional events. So this was the event to attend. People came from all over the country and Canada. There were twenty-eight dogs in the Parade of Titlists. With the large entry, there was an astounding depth of quality. The specials were breathtaking. The regular show was preceded by a great tracking test five Field Spaniels passed and followed by four trailer shows, which were all supported.We are blessed in Poms to have a number of local events as well as two nationals a year. So you are bound to be able to attend one near you. But the main event is the National in Louisville in March. Here is a glorious opportunity to meet new people, see fabulous dogs, and have lots of fun, as well as compete. There is so much to see and do that one is forced to plan some rest time I hope you are making your plans now to attend. Arrange for time off from work, get that cheaper plane ticket, hire the dog sitter, get together with friends to share a ride, plan your catalogue ad, and save your money. Hope you havent forgotten to get that check in the mail to Erika.Happy New Year JanuaryFebruary 2003 APC Pomeranian Review - ISAnnette DavisOur question for this issue is Why should I neuter or spay my Pom petThere are a number of very good reasons why you should neuter or spay your Pom pet.1 The health of your pet.Research has shown that pets that are neutered or spayed have a lower risk of certain types of cancers.2 Ease in house training.It is much easier to house train your pet when he does not have the instinct to mark his territory. Contrary to popular belief, it is not just males who are inclined to mark their territory with urine. Females who are in season or who are trying to establish a pecking order may also mark their territory with urine. Males, who are neutered by six months of age, do not generally develop leg-lifting behavior.3 A pet that is easier to live with.Neutered dogs are less aggressive and you will not have the embarrassing problem of them mounting everything in sight your visitors leg, other pets, toys, etc. Males who have only one thing on their mind do not make very affectionate pets. Spayed females are generally more affectionate toward people and other pets, and are less likely to aggressively defend their place in the household pecking order.4 The safety of your pet.Males who are not neutered often become obsessed with finding females. Obsessed males try to run away at every chance and make irrational choices such as darting into the road, challenging a larger male, jumping from high places, etc.5 Its the right thing to doMillions of unwanted pets end up in animal shelters each year. Four to six million animals are euthanized killed because homes cannot be found for them. Warm it just enough to dissolve the Knox gelatin. I use a small, hand held drink blender to help mix and dissolve the gelatin, so that I don't have to get the Pedialite hot, just warm.In a separate container, mix together all the remaining ingredients, and, again, use the little blender, or mix very well. Allow the Pedialite mixture to cool a little then combine with the milk mixture. Again, blend VERY WELL.I keep stressing the blending part, this is very important, especially if you are going to tube feed, or bottle feed newborns. I bought a Pom from a lady in Milwaukee. Since I have always been interested in Biology I am qualified to teach it and had taken a genetics course in college, I chose a Pom that was a different color than I had ever seen before. She was a brownish-orange with lighter brownish pigment on her lips, nose, eye rims and foot pads.I know now. but didnt know then, she was a beaver color. I entered my first show with her in September, 1968. I was told by another exhibitor that she shouldnt be shown because she didnt have black pigment, even though she won firstplace over that exhibitor. Sony to say, I took that lady's advice and sold her as a pet.I then purchased an orange Pom from a lady in Illinois. She was all Scotia, from Edna Girardot's breeding. I was so eager to show, that I entered Varneys Bubbles Up in her first show when she was six months and two days old. I had trained her in our back yard by myself. There were no conformation training classes available for me to attend. I showed her completely by myself and finished her. I can still remember the first major she won. Of course, I was a beginner and a stranger inthe show ring. I heard several exhibitors saying, Who is she Well, from then on they knew who she was. Bubbles became CH. VARNEYS BUBBLES UP C.D. Yes, after she finished her CH. Title, I trained her in our back yard for her C.D. title. She earned her C.D. in three consecutive shows.. .no flunks I also showed her for BOB for the three shows, as long as I was entered in obedience.There was no problem. She knew the difference in leads.So, not knowing anything about grooming or showing, I learned the hard way. I earned it I give credit to Nadine Hersil, who helped me learn how to groom and show. If I learned to do it, anyone can learn to do it. All you need are good Pom people who are willing to teach you. Always remember from whence you came. The brother and a sister pups from Randy were grandchildren of the Bakers CH. Corn Dukes Dragonfly. I had handler Loraine Heichel finish a few Poms for me after I showed the first one COMPLETELY by myself.I thought it was about time to think of a kennel name. We had Pomeranians and Irish Setters at that time. My husband, Richard, suggested a combination name from both breeds, so our kennel name was born. My POMIRISH show stock was basically from the lines of Scotia, Jolly Wee Duke, Great Elms, and Creider. From then on, I was breeder-owner-handler of more than fifty Pom champions. I stopped counting when I got to fifty.CH. RANDYS POMIRISH SUPER SPORT, ROM the pup from Randy Freeh was bred to CH. BUBBLES to produce AM. CN. CH. POMIRISH BUBBLES LIL SQUIRT, who became a multi group winner, breeder-owner-handled. Jackie Liddle Stacy took Squirt to some Canadian shows. He took back to back Group firsts and BIS in Canada to finish his Canadian title.Through the years, Jackie and Nadine helped me out when needed. In the 70s and 80s I was not only showing Poms, but Irish Setters and Norwich Terriers. Sometimes I had a conflict and really needed helpCH. Squirt sired CH. POMIRISH SWEET N SOUR, Gherkin and Squirt were shown as a brace. Their very first show as a brace, they won Best in Show Brace at the big Waukesha KC dog show. Squirt also sued CH. He also was a BISS in Des Moines one year. His record may have been a first for creams, breeder- owner-handled. Whether it was or not, he broke the ice for the future. Cream Puff was an almost white Pom.. .a big loss considering what could have been had she not died on the table. Chance was bom on January 13, 1979. He died December 4, 1990, just shy of his twelfth birthday. As long ago as that was, tears still come to my eyes. Her rantings were heard by all standing outside the ring. That was the last time he went in the ring. He quit dog shows completely I lost a good helper because of the ranting of a judges inappropriate behavior toward a young boy doing his best. This actually happened in the Norwich ring.During those years I handled for several other Pom people. I helped finish the first Champion parti-color male Pom in the history of the breed for Sherry Dollar at that time. While I was showing my Poms, I also showed Norwich Terriers and Irish Setters. I was breeder-owner- handler of more than thirty Norwich.Our kennel w as proud to have been a little part in Nadine Hersils big winning Pom CH. D- NEES DARIN DUFFY.Duffy's grandmother was D- Nees D-Lite of Pomirish. She was a sister in my litter of three females. I finished Winnie and Pooh. I have been on the Board for about fifteen years at various times serving as Recording Secretary. Vice President, or regular board member. I am currently on the APC Board and was appointed to the Pom Standard Committee last year.I reformatted the Pom Standard when AKC asked breed clubs to do so and originally was chairman of the former standard revision committee. That standard has been in existence for six years and last year another committee was formed to correct a few conflicts and misinterpretations existing. We have a difficult task. Being a seminar presenter is similar to being a good breeder in that both jobs demand a great responsibility while partaking in a joyful sharing activity.Before you eagerly volunteer, I thought you might want to hear about APCs recent participation at the Los Angeles Dog Judges Education Association. I was the official presenter but couldnt have done it alone. My very capable team consisted of APCs members Gina Bush, Fran Milteer-Smith, and Alane Levinsohn. This Association holds its three days of seminars annually in a hotel near the Los Angeles airport. It is a very dynamic group. We were to present two identical sessions, each one and a half hours long. Attendance was approximately thirty.Preparation for this seminar started months in advance. I coordinated my teammates and what live Pom examples they could provide. The Judges Association needs to know information about this team for their printed brochures. Arrangements for reproduction of APCs handout booklet must be done. And since APC has only two copies of the transparencies for over-head projection, this packets arrival must be coordinated and safely sent on to the next presenter.We have Charlotte Creed to thank for her dedicated work that produced the course material. Presently it comes in the form of transparencies for over-head projectors. Not many judges groups can afford to utilize power point yet, but the future is not far off. Presenters need to familiarize themselves with using presentation equipment. It is most helpful to bring someone along that can be in charge of assisting in this way. They need to know how to run the equipment and to coordinate this with an outline of your presentation. This frees the speaker to concentrate on the immediate task at hand.... a thought provoking presentation.Likewise, it is best and saves much needed time to have assistance in presenting the live specimens. For objectiveness, I try not to include Poms from my household. And I also try to have Poms from at least two different lines there. THIS IS NOT THE TIME NOR THE PLACE TO PROMOTE YOUR POMS AS THE EXAMPLE OF THE PERFECT POM. It is important that those assisting know that their Poms are very good examples of our breed, however no dog is perfect. Judges need to tactfully and openly discuss the positives and negatives of each example in the hands on portion. Judges need to see excellent examples, but might need to have pointed out our breeds common faults at the time.As in any classroom, interest is peaked when live examples are used in demonstration.Continued on Page 2726 - JanuaryFebruary 2003 APC Pomeranian ReviewflpC Judges educationDot MartinIn an ideal world.........Based on some inquiries Ive had from American Pomeranian Club members, there are those who have questioned their qualifications to serve as mentors and presenters. It would be an ideal world if we had breeders and exhibitors in every area of the country who have been breeding multiple champions or exhibiting the same for ten, twenty or thirty years.It would be an ideal world if we had seminar presenters who had been teachers for years or who have degrees in education. This is not an ideal world, however. Which does not mean that members with less experience cannot be of service or that they have little of worth to offer the fancy. To a person who is sincerely trying to gain knowledge, anyone willing to help is a blessing. Proximity is another vital concern. Those who live in Florida will be of limited value to learners in California and vice versa. To evaluate puppies, one needs to see them as very young puppies as well as during changing stages all the way to adulthood. In our breed, coats change and evolve on a regular basis. The same is true of color.An ongoing relationship is important also. That takes commitment to people who cannot repay you for your time. The rewards come in other ways, satisfaction for being an asset to someone and the knowledge you gain whenever you endeavor to teach. My first mentor in Pomeranians was Ruth Beam. I owe her a lot. One thing she said to me that I will always remember is, You would think as long as Ive been in this breed, I would know it all. I dont. I learn new things all the time. I can echo her sentiments. Its all new every morning. I want to express my appreciation to all the other mentors that Ive had over the years.I am not asking you for perfection, I just need commitment. If you have that to offer, you will be an asset.In Louisville we will exchange ideas. We will review the standard. That will be our most important challenge to learn the standard and apply it to the dogs we live with on a daily basis. Just think, kennel blindness could become obsolete in our breed.In an ideal world, Louisville will have a roomful of Pomeranian lovers who are dedicated to the best interest of the breed. This means convey what is important for JUDGES to know. Save your breeder information for when you are addressing novice breeder or exhibitors. Assume the audience knows how to read. EVERY judges association has always emphasized they dont want a presenter to read the standard to them. Yet they say this is unfortunately the most common thing that happens. Assume they have done or will do their homework to watch the AKC Breed Video on their own. They will have a copy of the Standard in the handout. Of course, the presenter has it memorized cold Know every phrase, verbatim. You will not be able to field their questions otherwise.In your preparation, constantly ask yourself what sets our breed apart from all others or what similarities these judges might draw from. You will find your audience well informed and eager to learn. Any teachers dream class.I will not get into the subject matter here because I know Dot Martin will cover that in person. But after your general presentation, be sure to invite their questions so that you can follow their lead of interest. This is their opportunity to ask an expert in the field. However, always remember your voice should be that of APC. This is not a time to push your own agenda. This is one reason we are interested in having APC members do the presentations. It shouldnt be how one individual interprets the standard no matter how knowledgeable that person is. The presenter should have their knowledge of Poms not only from a hands on viewpoint, but also from the perspective of what is happening across the nation. Hopefully active involvement with APC and its nationals helps form that perspective.Yes, it is work to present a good seminar. But this is the best way you can do something that will assist in providing knowledgeable judging in the future. The future judges of the breed influence breeders and the learning circle is complete. We received so many letters back from judges, that I still havent featured all of them. The two judges, Mrs. Alfred Treen, and Mrs. Alane Gomez, featured in this issue have been judging for many years and were kind enough to give us their opinion of the Pomeranian breed.I have known Mrs. Alfred E. Treen Esme and her husband A1 for many years. They lived in the Milwaukee, WI area for many years. They were President, show chairman, etc. of the Waukesha Kennel Club, it seems like.. .forever. They retired and relocated to sunny Nevada a few years ago. I do have a little warm spot in my heart for these people who gave so much to the sport. She thinks they are now being presented in better condition.Mrs. Treen feels the present standard is quite explicit. She really likes the breed. When judging she pretends all dogs are gray so colors all have a chance. The dog is important, color is secondary.Mrs. Alane L. Gomez lives in Texas and has been approved to judge since 1966. She writes, In 1965, when I decided to apply to judge, I believed I could do a better job than those judges I encountered every weekend at the shows. Many judges were blatantly political and discourteous. And, yes, I believe I have improved greatly over their judging.Mrs. Treen has been an AKC Judge for forty-six years. She started in obedience and was encouraged to apply to become a judge by members of the Houston KC . They lived there at that time. They have lived with Boston Terriers her mother was a breeder of Bostons, Cockers, Boxers, and Dalmatians. They were breeders of Dais for thirty-five years. Esme wrote a book and many articles on the Dalmatian breed.Mrs. Treen was a sister-in-law of Sophie Mayes. Sophie is a former Pom Review editor, APC President and long time breeder and exhibitor. Esme recalls that she showed for Sophie at the APC Specialty for Sophie at one time. She thinks Joe Faigel was the judge. She loves the breed loves to see the good ones move and is fascinated at how much they can resemble a sled dog. She expects a well groomed exhibit in her ring and an exhibitor who pays attention to instructions. She feels the exhibitor can improve the average show Poms presentation by having them in good condition and if they stop over trimming although she says there is lessIn 1953 I became involved with AKC Collies and Shelties. In fact, my husband and I still breed, train and exhibit Shelties today. Additionally, we bred Siberian Huskies and Mastiffs. We owned a couple of Great Danes. We bred a litter of Miniature Poodles and a litter of Miniature Pinschers. We also owned two Mexican Hairless and an Italian Greyhound. We considered becoming involved with the Pomeranian in the 1960s visiting prominent breeders of that era, but family commitments prevented us from pursuing this.Mrs. Gomez adds, What I enjoy about judging the Pomeranian is its delightful personality, the charming way they respond to their ownershandlers. Also enjoyable is the challenge of sorting through the entries and trying to find the dogs that most closely adhere to the breed standard.She expects the exhibitors, first of all to be kind and loving to their dogs, then she expects the exhibitors to follow her instructions and to not have their dogs overscissored.28 - JanuaryFebruary 2003 APC Pomeranian ReviewTo improve the average show dogs presentation, the dog should be trained to accept the judges examination. I realize this can be quite a chore. And please, do not chop off so much of the dogs coat. There are adult Poms that look like five month old puppies due to all of the hair that has been cut off. Actually I believe the quality of the breed has improved, but we still need to watch out for poor bites, round eyes, soft coats, weak pasterns, and weak rears.Regarding the breed standard, I believe it is very well written, but breeders need to watch out for muzzles that are TOO short and blocky. In fact, some Poms are so thick in muzzle that they look like miniature Chows There is no fox-like expression when the muzzle is too short and bulky.The Pomeranian appears to be in good hands, for the most part, and I commend those breeders who diligently and faithfully work to improve the breed.AND MORE______THE EYE CONNECTIONThe late Dolly Trauner and her husband worked very hard to form and defend CERE from becoming something not desired. She fought to have only veterinary opthomologists test the dogs eyes in order for them to be CERF certified.Originally it was formed so breeders of Poodles could have their dogs eyes tested and help to eliminate the eye problems that were so prevalent in that breed. Today it is the official eye certification organization for all breeds of dogs.Thoughts for the dayLearn from the mistakes of others.. .you cant live long enough to make them all yourself.Admitting youre wrong is like saying youre wiser today than you were yesterday. He completed his championship in style earlier this year winning BOB and Group I from the classes and won another Group I his first weekend out as a special. He is described by his owner as a ladies man but his favorite pastime is lying on Dad's lap watching TV.Ch. Sandalwood JI Marty Jr. - MJ is Roger and Ellens first CanadianAmerican champion. His Canadian wins include two Group Is from the classes. He was brought out of retirement and shown only eight times this year. His American wins include a BISS, a Group I, a Group III and two Group IV. His owners say MJ has a wonderful personality and is siring some pretty puppies.The show was followed by a raffle that is getting more successful every year. As some of you know, I am a nut on looking for a Pom that carries its head proudly and high. It has to have good shoulder layback in order to do that. Of course the rear angles have to match the front angles to enable the dog to move with its front and rear legs in the same plain when trotting.The next thing I love to see in a Pom is nice high-set ears. We see too many Poms with ears set low. I also love to see the correct almond-shaped eye called for in the standard. I see too many incorrect round eyes. Our muzzle to skull comparison needs to be defined in the standard as 13-23, with muzzle rather fine, but not snipey. A Chow-type face is cute, but not correct. I will give in a little on some things if I can find those things covered in the first paragraph.To round out the balance of the Pom fitting into a circle, is a nice high tail-set, and a nicely plumed tail that lies flat on the back. The softer under-coat should be profuse enough to hold out the harsh, longer guard hair without hair spray.The Pom should have a smooth, free action with good reach and drive. We dont want to see a bouncy Pom or one that is hackney-like. Of course, after all is said and done, a Pom has to look like a Pom. I found what I like in a Pom with my winners. My Best of Breed was beautiful and moved itself with head earned proudly and high. He was very alert and a very good example of the breed.Winners Dog was a little son-of-a-gun. When he heard another Pom barking in the back of the room, he stood up perky and straight, showing off his beautiful self. Attitude just oozed from him. In the end there was no getting around it. He was begging for Best of Breed, but there was no doubt, he had Best of Winners in the bag. It may not be long and he could be a BOB contender Ill be watchingWinners Bitch was also a very nice example of the breed. She was wonderfully put together, moved confidently and seemed to tell me she was the best bitch there. The Best Puppy was a close second. Better watch outThe dogs entered under me are always my priority in the conformation ring and I will judge them according to my perception of the one that most closely resembles the ideal of the breed. Salisbury Sensation, owned by Mrs. Andrew W. Rose. The award was made by Alfred DelmontFamous Singer W ho Brings News of Toscanini ]VT-T1While each of the Old Trusty Dog Foods contain one or more of the five known vitamins, Vi-Ti contains them all, and is particularly rich in the , valuable vitamin B. It is not a complete diet in itself, but should be added to the regular feeding ration. It will greatly benefit any dog lacking vitality and energy. In taste and smell Vi-Tiresem- bles a high grade of beef extract, and is extremely palatable and pleasing to the dog. In a surprisingly short time it will give him a healthy appetite and a new interest in life. Put up in bottles of 100 five-grain tablets, with complete directions for feeding.iIn going through some old catalogues one finds the blacks were once the important Poms of the day. Imagine a specialty with 174 dogs entered, with blacks having the largest classes. Way back in 1912, 1913 and 1914 there were puppy, novice, limit and open black classes. And they were all well filled. At the American Pom specialty show in 1914 the puppy dog, black, class had six entered and was won by Reuben Clarkes Glapton Masher. The novice black dog class had ten entered. The next, limit dogs, black, seems almost impossible, but there they are all listed, exactly 19 of them. Reuben Clarke was again victor in this class with his Harley ford Mannekin, a win certainly worthwhile. The limit and open, brown or chocolate classes had eight each. These classes were also limited to weight of under eight pounds. The winner in both was Haughty Little Prince, owned by Albert Freeth. About this time Mr. Freeths kennel was known as Tuxedo and he had such famous dogs to offer at stud as Offley Wee Blackie, Snowball III, a white, Offley Mite, a shaded sable, and Woodfield Ebony, black.No doubt you will be interested to learn more about some of these older winners and who was exhibiting at that time, so I wilt go on with the story of the show. The sables at this time were 'Still divided in just plain sable and shaded sable, but were shown together in the same classes. Mrs. Frank T. Clarke showed a dog called Ashton Chocolate Dandy in open, sable or shaded sable class. Am wondering if this fellow was one with chocolate tippings. I have seen a few of this kind. Maybe Mrs. Clarke will enlighten us. The males and females of white color were shown together in well filled classes. Mr. Freeth showed two, Tuxedo Snow White and Snowball Princess. The blue and beaver classes were also very prominent. In the orange or cream classes males and females were again shown together. Elsie Blum won the puppy class in these colors with her Master Reynard, whose sire was Pomland Prince Orson, a dog that figures in the pedigrees of the big winners today.The limit class had nine entered, with first going to Young Gold Spec the winner of best in show, a son of Brooklyn Gold Spec and owned by the Swiss Mountain Kennels. These kennels were owned by Mrs. Frank Smyth, then president of the American Pomeranian Club. The puppy dogs and bitches, any other color, class was won by Mrs. Charles R. Water- houses Wild Wood Clover, of which she was the breeder. Believe it or not, there were classes for dogs over eight pounds, as well as one for those under five pounds. Evidently there were plenty of small ones this early as there were 12 entered in the class. First went to Miss Marian Kennedys Ch. Parneuk Blackthorn. Mrs. R. F. Mayhews Fox Hills Buttons, Reuben Clarkes Granta Prince Charming and Kitty Carlins Eastney Imp were present.Some more novel classes were the puppy and open for American or Canadian-bred dogs. Then therewere the veteran classes for dogs over six years old, also well filled.The female black classes averaged about nine and ten in the class. A show in itself. Fairfax WeeGeorgette, owned by Mrs. Frank T. Clarke, wasamong the ribbon winners. Miss Theodora Wilbours Mossley Orange Girl won both limit and open bitch, sable or shaded classes, having 11 and ten dogs each, then won the under five pound class in which 12 were entered and finally took winners and best of oppositesex. Mrs. Alfred Delmont showed her AfFon Effie in this last class. Miss D. B. Champion was among the winners with her Ebony Brightness. Two more novel classes were for dogs and bitches owned on the Island of Manhattan, champions barred.A few years ago when childrens classes were started it was supposed to be something new, but evidently it was only a revival as Class 68 at this show was none other than childrens class, dogs and bitches to be shown by child not exceeding 14 years of age.Another class of which we have heard much talk but which has not matured to a very great favor was also listed, namely the selling class price not to exceed 100 should there be more than on claimant, dog to be put up for auction, the club to take 25 of all sales above 100. There were three entered in the class, and first was won by Reuben Clarkes Ashburn Tiny. Wonder if he sold him The catalogue is made up in a style used by some superintendents today with the list of dogs and breeding, etc., and then later the classes with the dogs listed again. This type of catalogue has always been a pain in the neck to me, as one must continually thumb back through the pages in order to see what is what about each dog.There were some 89 exhibitors and the club had a membership of 139 There were plenty of silver cups and club medals offered the prime money in each class ran around 10 and a total of 608 cash was given out in the classes. A grand big show that certainly must have been a pleasure to witness. Can't we come together and have that kind of a show again next year It is possible if every breeder makes up his mind to do his part. ArchivesJanuaryFebruary 2003 APC Pomeranian Review - 37Mange JOuuvzfeldenA Practical Understanding of Patellar LuxationMy usual approach to my articles is to present researched information and to allow my readers to apply the information as suitable to their household. This month I thought I would summarize or interpret some practical information as gleaned from various veterinarians concerning this common knee problem.All problems have a genetic and an environmental component. Health and behavior issues alike. We can all agree on that. Some problems weigh heavier on genetic others on environment.People can justifiably differ in their opinion about which one accounts for more on any particular problem. This article will not address how to prevent problems before they happen. As a flightattendant once said about opening overhead compartments, Caution, SHIFT happens. The same sound alike can be said about quality breeding.Until unproven statistically, it is thought that large dogs generally are more likely to have hip problems while smaller dogs are more likely to have knee problems. All knee problems are not identical. There are ligaments that attach crosswise and others that attach along the lateral surface of the upper and lower leg. Together they allow full normal range of motion. Some other breeds are more apt to have trouble genetically with the cross-wise ligament.One reason toy dogs are more prone to knee problems is by definition of toy we have reduced the diameter of the bone that should have a groove for the kneecap to glide along. If the groove is very shallow a small bone with large groove would be too fragile the kneecap has more opportunity to slip from a normal position to in most cases the inside of the leg position. When this occurs the ligaments might become torn or stretched, allowing reoccurrence of abnormal rotation. Ligaments do not have the ability to stretch and then contract elasticity that muscles have. When the kneecap is not in the normal position, the upper and lower muscle cant work properly. Pain occurs. Dogs generally stretch the leg out to attempt to pop the kneecap back into position.When a vet grades knees, they force the kneecap out of position and assign a one to five grade to each knee depending on how easy or hard the kneecap was to get out of position and how readily it returned to a normal position. Thus they are testing the functioning the knees and particularly those ligaments.Yes, this is an inheritable trait As any knowledgeable canine or equine person would agree, two other visible traits that are linked to patellar luxation are lack of bend of stifle and long hocks. You could draw the conclusion to favor puppies with more moderately bend of stifle and shorter not long hocks.When will knee problems begin to occur As young as sixteen-weeks. Before that you should also be suspicious of knees that make clicking sounds. I find that Poms of five or six months of age are also prone to broken legs because they are very active teenagers whose long bones have grown but muscle mass has not yet matured. Concerning patellar luxation, lacking muscle development translates in lack of muscle elasticity which in turn can put more stress on those ligaments. Consequently, an accident might occur that aggravates a genetic problem. This usually happens when the Pom twists quickly after planting a foot. Why hitch-kicks occur in the ring at comers. Very slippery footing or uneven footing also can aggravate or injure the knee. Why hitch-kicks occur crossing tape or rough surfaces in the ring...thank goodness Poms naturally avoid these. One reason a Pom might not stand square is to avoid putting equal weight on a sore knee.At first, sometimes a luxating patella doesnt cause much pain to the Pom. Sometimes it is even less noticeable if both knees are equally bad because the Pom cant favor one side. This is doubly NOT preferable though.So what do you do if you notice it happens once...truly done by an injury Rest the injury to allow for possible healing. Youve noticed how accidents have a higher incidence rate on veterinary off-hours. This means complete confining at first. Then gradually increasing activity while minimizing risk of re-injury. This means no canine playmates and mg flooring for good traction. Successful therapy consists of walking on a leash at slow speed.However, if the animal doesnt make visible progress or re-injures itself or displaces the kneecap under normal conditions, it is time to consider surgical correction for that animal. Surgical correction will eliminate the Poms pain now or lessen the chances in the future of arthritis affecting the injured joint. Of course, surgery puts a finish to the Poms show career. You start out letting the puppy go where it wants to and gradually work into leash training. Before long the puppy is walking along with you going where you want it to go. Its a very gentle way to leash train and the puppies almost leash train themselves Once the puppy is walking well on a flexi, then more formal leash and show training can start all training sessions are short to match the puppys short attention span. Liberal treats are also used. Sandra MeI get out of my car with a leash on the dog and walk the dog to the house so far it has worked well. Jean SchrollI have found that confining the puppy in an x-pen and only taking the puppy out to play on-lead has worked wonders. It is very gentle and makes them associate a pleasant experience with the lead. Wendy DonnellyI only use the clicker method for any training. First of all the puppy has to be familiar with what the clicker means - that a treat will follow immediately. Put the lead on the puppy. Hold the lead loosely. If puppy takes one step, click and treat. Remember the treat MUST FOLLOW THE CLICK IMMEDIATELY. In no time the puppy will catch on that when he walks, he gets a click and then a treat. They will do anything for the treats. But remember, the treat has to be just that, not plain old kibble, but something worthwhile working for. Roberta MalottIf the pup is badly lead shy, Id start first with putting the collar on and leaving it on. Then attach a six-inch piece of string. Slowly change up to longer pieces of string until the pup is pulling two feet, then pick up the other end and let the pup lead you around. Then using bait teaches him to come to you with the string on. By then you should be OK. DeeIts been a few years now but I always do it the same way. I put the collar and lead on in the house and carry the pup outside.Our yard is fenced so I know itll be safe. Then I just let the puppy wander at will - wherever it wants to go, and I follow along, always making sure the leash is loose. Ive never had a pup object to this, but if one should, then I would drop the leash and let it drag it around behind him. Dont let him chew on it. Thats a no-no. When its time to go in, I call the pup, offering a treat and then pick it up and carry it inside. If youre lucky enough to have it relieve itself while out there, I always praise with Good potty over and over WHILE in the process, not afterwards. It will eventually know what potty means and go on command. Over the days that follow, the pup becomes used to you following it around. Then you can start gently guiding it where you want it to go, always with praise and treats. All of my puppies have learned very quickly, and not one of them is afraid of or dislikes the leash. They have learned to associate the leash with your company, having fun with you, and treats BevMy solution is to send it out for an hour with a seven-year-old child on the other end. After being dragged around for a while, theyll start to walk. I did this with a two-year-old Pom that had been sent to me to handle. No one had ever been able to get him to walk on a lead. My niece took him out to play for a while and he came back lead broken. His owner was amazed I had another dog that was sent to me untrained for handling. Two days after receiving her, we were forced to abandon the motor home to take shelter under the stands of a stadium from a tornado that had touched down near the show grounds. I threw leads on all the Poms and ran through the driving wind and rain to the shelter. The client Pom was dragged in the beginning of this dash, but was completely lead broken by the time we reached the stadium. We sometimes spend too much time trying to console these fur kids into doing what we want. We worry too much that the dog wont trust us or like us. Sometimes, you just have to take on the role of mamma dog and insist on certain behaviors. Diana DowneyI teach my puppies off lead to walk with me using lots of sweet-talking, treats and toys to squeak. We stop at regular intervals and practice stacking and then off we go again. I let them wear the lead supervised for a couple days around the house, letting it drag and then we proceed as before with me holding the lead. If the puppy wont come along with me as they did with no lead, I follow them. As long as they are moving then were happy. If they stop and refuse to move, I do a light tug and release while squeaking their toy and asking them to come along. After theyve moved a short distance they get lots of praise and treats. Then I ask them to move out with me again. Ive never had one that simply refused to move. The treats and going to play with Mom are just more than they could resist Terry Rothell-LuskUmmrnmm - send him to a handler Or you could try clicker training. Every step he takes initially is rewarded with click and a treat hold that treat just a tad forward when he is taking several steps let him do so. Then click treat. When you are sure that he knows that he is supposed to, move when you do, start giving the command I use Lets go and fade out the clicker. Mary AllanSo many ways to start leash training I start much younger eight to nine weeks with a small lightweight collar and tempt with chicken liver. I say, Lets go, and walk off with the treat. When they follow well with just the little collar, I use a string lead. I repeat the command and reward with the treat when the proper response is achieved. The collar is on only for the training session not left on all the time. Once they are going good on the string lead the real work begins with the stack up and bait training. I have happy outgoing sparky dogs in the show ring using this method. It will work on older stubborn puppies too. A friend waited until her pups were almost six months old and it worked for her. Good luck. Pat MurkI always start all my pups on a lead with another, very experienced show dog. I do not ever let the lead pull or irritate the puppy. Very soon he has forgotten and is just happy to be out with his older friend. I also use a one-word command when we are going to walk on the lead, like walkies. He gets used to this and thinks of it as a real treat I also praise him when he walks well, but do remember that at four months your puppy is still a baby and Rome was not built in a day JacquiI like to start puppies on a soft braid collar and a Flexi lead. Take the puppy outside for a fun walk. It also helps to take another trained dog that will move out ahead of the reluctant one. If the puppy does not like pressure around the neck, try using a harness in the beginning. I use a lot of treats and toys to motivate. There are lots of things to try. A very shy intimidated puppy should be trained on the bed. Play with the leash attached to desensitize any fear of the leash, and then gradually start picking up the leash while keeping the pups attention on the toy. If it is watching you and the toy from bed height, then put the pup on the floor. If you get their attention on you or the training object, they forget about that nasty old leash. Vicky LeitnerMy training always started well before the four month stage, but better late than never I walk around first with a treat in my hand leading the puppy minus a leash. I encourage and baby talk constantly rewarding him with a piece of the treat. This not only teaches them to follow you, but also to watch your hand, and watch for treats. As this becomes old hat, I then put a lead on the puppy and let him drag it while I am again leading him around with the treat. Then you pick up the lead as he gets used to the feel and use gentle tugs with instant rewards as he puts the brakes on. I find the more I have used this method, the easier it is to lead train, and to bait train. It is in her memory the following story is dedicated.The information and quotes by Sallie are taken from an article published by The Desoto Mississippi County Tribune dated April 15, 1984 and is shared by Bettie Carpenter.The article begins Signs in her yard say Beware Of Dogs but unless you are worried about having your ankles nuzzled to death you dont have much to concern yourself on a visit to Sallie Sajonces house or Tchulahoma in Memphis just across the Mississippi state line. as ------InMemory of the lateSALLIE SAMEby Marcia CoxMrs. Sajonce does have dogs but rather than Shepherds or Dobermans her dogs are of the toy variety with the tallest reaching about calf high. Instead of guarding their territory these little fellows stand on their hind legs and turn in circles trying to get the visitor to pet them.They all make up what Mrs. Sajonce unofficially calls her family and officially Kennys Kennels. Sallie breeds her dogs, shows them at regional and national dog shows and treats them like one of the family.Oh, did I leave some water in your ear when I gave you your bath, Daphne she coos to one dog busily scratching its ear. Mamall put some medicine in it in a minute. Daphne is one of the dogs that permanently live in the house with Sallie. The others I dont want to know how many I have, she said live in a kennel and take turns getting to come inside.Mrs. Sajonce takes care of all her dogs by herself - washing, grooming, feeding and giving them lots of love. They all know their names like you know yours, she said. And they all respond to her voice. As if to prove her point she addressed a barking dog Cedric, Mamas gonna get the fly swatter. Cedric sat down and was immediately quiet. Sallie said she uses a fly swatter to give the dogs a gentle swat whenever they are misbehaving.I found if I used a newspaper then whenever I sat down to read it they all went and hid, she explained. Even with all her fondness for her dogs Mrs. Sajonce believes in keeping them in line. Nobody likes a bad child or a bad dog. Tf you let them go youd have a bunch of juvenile delinquents, she said.Far from being juvenile delinquents most of the dogs at Sallies house are AKC Champions. After a dog has been finished Mrs. Sajonce retires it for breeding purposes at her kennels where they live out their lives in comfort. Sallie said she occasionally sells one of her older dogs but only to someone she knows and trusts to treat them well. Most however stay with her and are buried on a hill behind her house.Her love affair with dogs began around 1948 when her first husband, deceased, Tracy Kenney, asked Sallie what she wanted for Christmas. She told him a dog and suggested they go to the local pound to pick one out. No, he said. Im going to get you the best there is Tracy went out and bought me a Cocker, she remembers.Mi's. Sajonce started showing her Cocker after a chance visit to a dog show. I thought my dog looked as good as any dog I saw there so I brought it to the next show, she said. A friendly judge showed Sallie how to stand the dog and it won. I got the show bug then, she smiles.-mwHPEven though her toy dogs are small Mrs. Sajonce says they are tough. I call them my little hardtacks. They run out in the snow and roll around coming back looking like little snowballs, she said.Mrs. Sajonce has a special grooming and puppy room for the newborns. Mother dogs in the last stage of gestation get to sleep in a special whelping pen in Mrs.Sajonces bedroom so she can awake immediately at the start of labor and help with her dogs.After birth the mother and puppies graduate to a modified baby playpen. In the winter Mrs. Sajonce has the playpens in the house where she can stop and pick each puppy up and hold it every time I go from the bedroom to the kitchen.Mrs. Sajonce doesnt lose many new puppies because she says she watches them closely. She has a heating pad under their beds to keep them warm. I check their tummies and if I dont think its full enough I tube feed them by running a tube to their stomachs and feeding them formula.She doesnt spend all her time taking care of her dogs. Sallie spends almost every weekend going to a dog show. She travels to Nashville, Birmingham,Jackson and Dallas regularly. Mrs. Sajonce has also been to Wyoming, Montana and The Westminster Kennel Club Show in New York City. She has even been to Crufts in London, the worlds largest dog show.Even though she doesnt take her dogs to all these shows Mrs. Sajonce said she likes to go and visit with her friends.Some of these friends date back years to when she had her own grooming shop and groomed toy dogs for other people.Some people would fly their dogs in on private airplanes to Memphis for me to groom and I would go to the airport and pick them up, she said.When Mrs. Sajonce goes to dog shows she has someone watch and feed her dogs along with her Cockatoos, which she also breeds. Sallie says of her toy brood, I have no favorites. They are all of my little children and each one has a different and equal part of my heart.SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SALLIE Sallie was the first female board member of the Memphis TN Kennel Club of which she was an active member up until her last illness.In the late 50s, Sallies love of the Pomeranian motivated her to form the Memphis Pomeranian Club, which she was President.Sallie was a member of The Professional Handlers Association and was a licensed All Breed Handler.Up until her passing, Sallie continued to show both Poms and Paps. She won with her Papillon at the Memphis Shows the month before her final hospitalization.As a young boy, AKC Judge Carl Yochum purchased his first Yorkie from Sallie. He rode his bike to her houseweekly making payments from the earnings of his paper route. Sallie and Carl traveled to shows together and remained good friends from that time on.One of Bettie Carpenters first show Poms is a son of Sallies CH. Kennys Goldmist Casper. Betties Casper, Delites Goldmist Casper, turned twelve this past December.Personal friend Nina Epps used to attend the Memphis Dog Shows around the time of her birthday. Sallie loved to cook and bake. One of her favorite occasions was to give Nina a birthday party during Ninas yearly visit.Sallie finished and absolutely adored CH. Kennys Goldmist Casper. Casper was cremated after his death and his ashes put into an urn. In her will, Sallie asked that she and her Casper be laid to rest side-by-side so they could be together forever. We will talk about and demonstrate what is involved in using your dog as a Therapy Dog, and will then test as many dogs as we have time for as the first step toward getting them registered as Therapy Dogs. There is no charge for this service.AGILITY SPECIAL COLUMNIs there anyone out there who does not know what Agility is Even my new Puppy Kindergarten students who have never had a dog before have watched Animal Planet, and are in awe of the dogs that sail overjumps, climb an A-Frame, race across the Dog Walk, and plunge through the Chute. Pomeranians do very well at this active sport, as is shown by the number of Agility titles at the end of every column I write. So this column is dedicated to Agility and to the agile dogs and handlers that compete in this sport.AGILITY OBSTACLESIf you are thinking about starting your Pom into Agility training, this is a summary of some of the common obstacles and the reactions of PomsBar Jump-Piece of cake if the dog already knows how to jump from Obedience. A good way to get a dog started jumping, who has not done it before, is to set up a 2x4 in a hallway at home and call the dog over it.Tire JumpDogs tend to run around it being curved, the tire seems to invite going past on one side or the other. Food lure through the middle seems to work best for me.Dog Walk-Most Poms love this. Its very important not to talk to him when he is elevated, though, since if he turns to look at you, he may come tumbling down. All the contact obstacles are much higher for Toy dogs than for the others-its a matter of proportionality. Luckily there was no damage.Open TunnelEasy enough when you start out with it straight, but confusing when it gets curved around. An occasional dog gets stuck in the middle and decides to stay, perhaps consuming a treat left by a previous dog.Closed Tunnel ChuteAmazingly fun for most Poms. I think its because they are used to being under the bed covers at home, and find this to be a similar sort of thing.A-FrameThe A-Frame, like the Dog Walk, is regarded by many Poms at first as a wonderful opportunity for sightseeing. Oh, look, I can see way over therePause TableThis is a place where having Obedience-trained your dog first helps a lot. The table is bigger for Poms than for large breeds, so easier to not slide off, but the SitStay and DownStay are vital exercises to have.Weave PolesWeaves are one of the most difficult obstacles. They used to be left out of the Novice Agility class, but have been added in. Only constant practice from the first day will make a dog proficient at this. It is really hard for a Pom to see this as ONE obstacle most will jump between two poles and then another two until they get experience.Also, Weaves that have a long metal base plate may confuse novice dogs.If you are concerned about the risk of jumping your Pom, but would like to get into Agility, there is a new set of titles in the Preferred classes as of September 1, 2002, that allow you to jump your dog at a much lower than usual jump heightdogs 10 and under at the withers jump only 4 dogs 14 and under jump 8.AGILITY TAILSAll right, so its spelled Tales. But however you spell it, there are some good stories out there How do these tiny dogs ever get into Agility Read on.Donna Wasielewski writes that Mindy Wasielewskis Mindy, AX AXJ started training for agility when she was little more than a year old. I saw the AKC Nationals on Animal Planet that year and thought my dog can do that Poor Mindy was shy around strange situations and had never been taken anywhere because she got carsick on every trip. Next thing she knew, she was entered in a class banging See-Saws on the ground, hanging out with lots of new people and dogs, and going for car ride after car ride. It took some time, but Agility did wonders for her confidence.She is quite the spectacular little dog now and my shy little girl can now most likely be found sitting loyally in front of whoever is holding the best treats.I remember one particular show where we had miraculously gotten to one leg away from our AKC Novice Agility title.It was the last run of the weekend and I really wanted to get the title. Mindy had other ideas. She did the opening part of the course well until we came to a part of the course where the dogs had to do a Tunnel to the A-frame and back to the same Tunnel. Mindy was moving well by then and did the Tunnel, went right up the A-frame, and stopped. She did the classic novice dog trick of making sure everyone noticed her standing up there before I was finally able to coax her down. Next was back to the Tunnel. I told her Tunnel, but she took one look at the Tunnel, and sat down on the course. I had no idea what was going on. I begged, I pleaded, I demanded, and Mindy wouldnt get up. When I came out of the ring, everyone was laughing and joking that she was trying to tell me that she already DID that Tunnel and wasnt about to waste her time doing it again. The worst part of it was that even with all of those problems, we just missed getting our title by just one point.Connie Zieba writes, Keoki really knows how to make his mom queasy. At one of his first agility shows, Keoki was happily running the course. All of a sudden he came to a screeching halt. He stuck his nose in the dirt and sniffed around busily. My husband, John David, who is Keokis handler, stood by helplessly calling to Keoki to resume running the course. Handlers are not allowed to touch the dogs during the run. They can only call or signal commands. All of a sudden Keoki found what he was looking for. He pulled a hot dog from the dirt, and right before our horrified eyes, ate it All the spectators groaned in commiseration. When he was done with his unexpected snack, he picked up his pace and finished the course. Who can say how long that hot dog had been hidden in the dirt of the horse arena I managed to capture the moment on video, but I cannot watch it without quaking. Keoki is formally Lord Peter of Bristol Court AX MXJ AD NAC OGC NJC he also has the ONYX, the second highest title in Fly ball.POMERANIANS AT THE NATIONAL ARC AGILITY CHAMPIONSHIPSI went to the Seventh National AKC Agility Championship competition in Katy, Texas, in November of 2002, and met some very special Pomeranians and their owners. These Poms are at the top in national Agility competition. I took a picture of five of them together. L-R they are Kathy and Buttons, Jill and Cowboy, Cody and Dax, Candy and Tanu, Daneen and Chopper. Cindy Diglis and her Pom Muffy were not there on Friday when I took the picture, but in the final totals they placed 5th out of 48 entrants in the 8 jump height class. Each of these dogs and handlers has an interesting story to tell.Kathy Flessner writes, I have always loved dogs since I was a little girl. Growing up we had a Collie and at age 15 lost her to old age. My mother went out the next day and bought me a 2-year-old Collie that had never been trained atn ari 1 9mKeoki__________all. We enrolled him in an Obedience class and I became hooked. During my high school years I ended up getting a couple more Collies and a German Shepherd Dog, all of which I trained and started competing in Obedience Trials. I ended up placing my dogs when I went to college and after that got married and wanted a dog right away. My husband grew up with small dogs and when I suggested a Collie he said what about a small one and so ended up with Shelties for many years. I showed in both Conformation and Obedience. I also had an Old English Sheepdog I showed in Obedience and Scent Hurdle racing. I like trying different dogs to train and always liked what the Pom looked like, so I bought a Pom puppy, Buttons, in October of 98. I signed her up for Puppy Kindergarten with the intention of showing her in Obedience. The place I was going to had a puppy Agility class, so I took it. It was so much fun that we continued with Agility training and started showing in Agility. We now have our MX and MXJ and are working on our MACH. We have 388 points and 6 double Qs. Buttons is a delight to own and work with. She is so dedicated to me and tries very hard to please me. She has made me want to get another Pom eventually, but theyll have some big shoes to follow with Buttons in my eyes. Buttons has also been certified for therapy work, which I plan on doing some day.She is also the cover dog on For the Love of Pomeranians for 2003 and on the inside of another Pom calendar. Toyrific Lil Buttons MX MXJ is just 4 years old.Jill Crawford ays that Cowboy is a 10-year-old Parti-Colored Pom. He has been a joy to train and compete with.We found him 8 years ago running down a highway. When no one claimed him at the Humane Society we knew he i needed to come to our home. Cowboy placed 4th in the 2000 AKC nationals in Massachusetts and earned his MACH in March 2002. He will now be retired from Agility and play in the Obedience ring for a few years. By the way, Jill is an AKC Agility Judge. 1Cody Cloney writes that at the Agility National Dax Jan-Shars Dax Emmanuels Gift CDX MX MXJ came in 32nd out of 47 little dogs, which for the first time I think was quite good. He qualified in his standard run on Sat. A.M. and I goofed in his jumpers and the run on Sunday, otherwise we could have been higher. He ran very well just not as 1fast as some of those other little ones. The handler goofs up way more often than the dogs, in my experience, no matter in which venue you are competing.Candy Clemente tells us that Chut Tanu Khuse MX MXJ, is a very special Agility Pom, bom 51296. The day after I bought Tanu, she was very lethargic and the next morning was so weak, I thought if I didnt hold her, she would stop breathing. I rushed her to the vet and she was diagnosed with Parvo. She spent a week in the hospital. A little over Ia year into her training, she injured her left eye and is now totally blind in that eye. Since the loss of her vision in her left eye, she is somewhat shy in certain situations, and I believe that contributed to her poor showing in the arena in Katy she did qualify in her Standard run. Other than that, she has done very well in Agility. She started showing in August of 99. She has qualified for the USDAA Grand Prix three times, and this last year made it to the semi-finals,r LLurliterTanubut was over time. In AKC, she has her MX and MXJ, and has 530 points and 19 double Qs towards her MACH. She is very special to me and I love her dearly. She is a wonderful traveling companion no one ever knows there is a dog on board in the planeshe has gone to Maryland for the USDAA DAM tournament, to Del Mar, CA, twice for the USDAA Grand Prix, to Dallas, TX, for the USDAA Grand Prix, and now to Katy, TX, for her first trip to the AKC Nationals.I Daneen Fox has had a variety of breeds, and has shown in Obedience and Schutzhund. But her Pomeranian, Big Furry I Chop-Monster AX MXJ, a.k.a. Chopper or Monster, got her into agility because he was a maniac Needed I something to channel all that energy into. We do Sheep Herding too Chopper is the first Pomeranian with a HCT title He is a certified therapy dog with TDI. We have been to elderly homes and pre-schools. We do Obedience, but not formallyYET. Choppers titles are a regular alphabet AX, MXJ, A AD, JM, OAC, NGC, EJC, RS-O, GS-N, JS-E, TDI, and he is the ONLY Pomeranian with HCT Herding.AND THEN THERES UKC AGILITYLois Morkassel see UKC titles below writes about the differences between AKC and UKC AgilityAG I has the same type of equipment as AKC with the addition of the hoop tunnel, log jump a spread, brush jump and window jump. The courses are usually shorter. The contacts can be shorterfor example, the Ft. Dodge, IA, show uses an eight foot teeter. The focus in UKC is on safety and inclusively. Dogs are faulted with points off on the contacts if they come on from an angle. The table has indicated sides for on and off and points off are taken for coming onto the angle of the table face or the two adjacent sides. The backside is like AKC. The times are more generous. The courses may not be as flowing as AKCs. The planes of the equipment are more important. You cannot cross a plane on any piece of equipment with any part of your body except the down contact on the A-frame. You cannot stand in front of equipment to call your dog over. No weave poles.AGII has different equipment. No teeter, A-frame, dog walk or table. Instead, there is a sway bridge, swing plank, platform jump, pause box and crawl tunnel. The handler must be at least two feet away from the weave poles.UACH is earned by qualifying with scores of 196 or better in AGI and AGII. The score is assigned a point value. At least forty points must be earned out of AGII for the 100-point total.AGIII UACHX has a combination of AGI and AGII equipment. The handler must be at least six foot away from the weave poles and table. There is a mandatory handler restriction. A qualifying score is 170 out of a possible 200. For UAGI and II, three qualifying scores earned less than one or more judges completes the title. For the UACHX, the five legs must be earned under three judges with a score of 196 - 200. It was a chilly October night in Colorado, when new member Mendy Henson frantically wrote to the list. It had been a while since she had seen her little Pom, Gus. After a thorough inspection of her apartment she grew worried. The minutes ticked by ever so slowly as her heart began dropping, hitting the pit of her stomach. She realized he was not hiding. Gus was LOSTInto the darkness surrounding the apartment building, Mendy called out for her only show Pom, a Canadian Champion, Gus. Her calls went unanswered other than the sound of her own voice echoing back. A drive through the neighborhood turned up nothing. In desperation she turned to the 200 members of The Pomeranian Post.Being a night owl I was awake reading my list mail. As I read her plea all thoughts of Gus went to the back of my mind, and for a few moments it was as if it were one of my own dogs that I would be searching for. My mind would race as my beating heart looked inside to grasp hold of a plan of action. The following is the plan that my mind and heart put together for my body to carry out. In other words its what Id do if it were I.-------------- jPut an article of clothing that you have Worn, or bedding belonging to that pet, outside, in front of your door, house, in the yard, etc. The scent may bring your pet home. Check the area periodically.Sit down at your computer and make a flyer. DO NOT mention that your dog is a Champion or a show dog to anyone Simply that he is the familys beloved pet and you grieve for him. Include a printed picture and a plea for his return.DO NOT put your name or address on the flyer, only your phone number for safety reasons. Tell them if they lose your number PLEASE turn him over to the Humane Society so you can locate him. You might say that in your flyer too.DO NOT waste time talking to people, FLY, as every single moment that passes could60 - JanuaryFebruary 2003 APC Pomeranian Reviewput him further from being found.Put your flyer on all the doors in your neighborhood and as you go door to door, hand them out. If they havent seen your dog yet, they may later.Take your flyer to EVERY GROOMER in your city.Give your NEWSPAPER CARRIER a copy and give one to the MAILMAN PRONTO. Ask if you may leave a stack of your flyers so that each mail carrier and every newspaper carrier will get a copy or that it is placed on a company bulletin board.Get out to the area convenience stores and leave a flyer there. Ask if they will allow you to tape it to the counter at least for a period of two weeks.Take some of your flyers and put one facing to the outside in ALL your car windows. Anybody parking next to you or passing by will surely notice and take a look at it.Bulletin boards at Pet stores and vet offices usually arent big enough for a large flyer but you can make a smaller version 5x7 and tack it in all the stores and vet offices too.Contact the kennel clubs in your area and the Humane Society as soon as they open. At the Humane Society, fill out a lost dog report. Include a copy of your flyer with a photo of the dog. Contact all the veterinary clinics, any rescue people, allbreed clubs, etc., in your area.Call the radio station and pay if necessary to have it broadcast X number of times during the course of the week, the month if need be.Call the newspaper AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and place at least two classifieds, one in the Lost and Found and the other in the pet section. Do the same thing in the Penny Saver or Thrifty Nickel.Contact your Emergency Animal Clinics and your Police. Check periodically for accident reports involving animals.When contacting veterinary offices, be sure to inform them of your dogs identification i.e., microchip, tattoos and any physical identifications.I hope that this is helpful to someone someday and they too will locate their lost companion, just as Mendy did. Horrified, I immediately rushed her to my local Vet I only have six Poms so if anyone so much as coughs, its off to the vet who wasnt quite sure as to what the problem was. He suggested cleaning the area with hydrogen peroxide and applying some neosporin for a few days before discussing the possibility of surgically removing the knot.Having been in cosmetic sales for over ten years I already knew what I would suggest for a client with Taras problem. So I decided, why not - lets go for it For approximately a week I washed the area with Cliniques Extra Strength Soap followed by Elizabeth Ardens Oil Control Clairfying Toner. I loved the look and personality of the little dog. After spending some time with my sister-in-laws little girl, I decided that the Pom was the breed for me. Although my wife Liz was not a dog person at the time, she finally caved in to my badgering. She agreed we could buy one of our own but it had to be different, it had to be black. My quest for a black little girl began.Stories we heard about how fragile Poms were, such as breaking a leg if they jumped from a couch, concerned us. We decided a larger Pom was in order. Having small children was also a concern for us, not concerned that the Pom would harm the kids but that the kids might accidentally injure a small Pom.Not knowing any better, my quest began at the newspaper stand. I scoured the ads for black Poms. The ads were few and far between at that time. We searched the newspaper for weeks looking for that elusive color.Our perseverance finally paid off and we found a puppy The parents were both on premises both were larger but not huge, so I thought her size would be about right for us. She was a shiny little black ball of energy It was love at first sight with the kids, and even Liz fell for this irresistible bit of fluff.We started referring to her as family in record time. As she played and tumbled through the grass chasing crickets around the yard, she made a name for herself. Cricket did all the things puppies do, like gnawing the furniture and chewing a hole in the carpet of the house we were renting. Our love for her never wavered. Cricket really bonded with my daughter becoming her protector and buddy.Owning or being owned by a Pom you begin to notice other Poms. As we met other people with Poms we developed some lasting friendships. Cindy Boulware was one of those people. Cindy would groom Cricket as she answered all of our beginner questions without being condescending or condemning our companion or us. As Cricket grew, we became interested in showing and breeding, so we asked for Cindys advice. She politely told us that Cricket was a good pet but as for showing she was not a good specimen. We were not discouraged because we bought her as a pet. She gave us much love and pleasure even if she was not a show dog. Cricket is now twelve years old and going strong. She still holds a special place in our hearts as our first Pom. We thank the Review for this pleasure down memory lane. 70 - JanuaryFebruary 2003 APC Pomeranian ReviewmmParent Club Conferenceby Marge KranzfelderOn the last weekend in October, the American Kennel Club, Inc. held its first Parent Club Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. Pat Laurens, as chair of the AKC Delegate Parent Club Committee, was instrumental in orga nizing this very beneficial gathering. Each Parent Club was able to send two Board representatives. Many were either club presidents or delegates. Each breed forms one Parent Club. In other words, The American Pomeranian Club is the parent club for the Pomeranian breed. Fran Stoll and Marge Kranzfelder were APCs representatives this year.Of course, each club has common problems. Being able to easily communicate common solutions was very beneficial. Some of the hot topics included Judges Education, Breeders Education, National Specialties, Illustrated Standards, Tax Issues, Fund Raising, Rescue, Modern Communication Technology, etc. We were able to recognize problems in other clubs that APC has resolved well. Other clubs shared some fantastic ideas we might also implement.Three hundred attendees provided so much positive energy, and were very open and frank about problems. Everyone acknowledged and showed respect of club differences. Illinois.Effingham, a small community, is located near the center of Illinois, and is home of a huge CROSS. The cross stands 198 feet and is located near the intersection of Interstate 5770, in clear view of approximately 18 million travelers per year.Phil has been in the printing industry for 37 years and is currently lead pressman for a major printing company. We have two married children, Wayne and Leslie Kueker. We are blessed with five beautiful grandchildren, Karley, Cameron, Elizabeth, Noah and Jacob. We currently have seven Poms.
