Which reminds me of the time my sister Mary and I were supposed to meet my parents for breakfast at Brennans we were running late, we hopped a cab, and when we arrived I realized I had forgotten my jacket. Of course, any high class restaurant is more than willing to lend you a jacket, and thats just what they did. The fact that the jacket was three sizes too small, and hot pink with a very large purple B on the lapel was something else again. That with my dark green pants and light green shirt and tie must have spoiled more than one appetite, but we enjoyed the breakfast nonetheless, due, no doubt, to my sisters sense of humor. It was on this very trip that she exhibited two flashes of the wit that has kept me in stitches since I was born, or a few minutes thereafter...we were pulling up to the front door of the Broadwater, and there was a rather harried looking woman standing there. Mary remarked, Whats with her She looks like she lost her last piastre. and she brought the whole dining room at Baracevs to attention by announcing, in a clear, solemn voice, Well, will we ever forget the great lobster scare of 1968 E.F. Hutton never got anyones attention so quickly. One other time, far from New Orleans, her humor put me in a very uncomfortable position.My first night in a new club, a message came to the stage...it said, Your sister Mary called long distance, something about Europe, and she will call back in fifteen minutes. Well, I went on working, but I could not make out the buzz going through the audience...Did you hear That guys sister just called from Europe...which then became Did you hear Some famous star just called that guy from Europe... which then became That guy on stage is engaged to a Princess and shes calling from Europe Of course, it is always best to tell the truth, but I had no idea until later what rumors were going around the crowd. Sure enough, fifteen minutes later, I was summoned to the phone. No, she wasnt in Europe, she was at a high rise party in Chicago and they had all decided to go to Europe, what did I think I said I thought it was fine, and I had to go back to work, which I did.Now, sometimes when Im thinking, or busy, or interrupted, my face becomes kind of somber looking, or so Ive been told. This may explain what happened next. The rumors got worse. The Princess wants to break off the engagement which then became Hes flying over there tonight to soothe things over which then became How can he go on singing, broken-hearted...Of course, the second time I was summoned to the phone,every eye in the place followed me, and watched me intently for any change in facial expression. Try, in the same situation, to keep a straight face when receiving the final message from your Erstwhile European Intended..."I just wanted to tell you that weve decided not to go to Europe. By the way, if youve got a bottle of Retsena, send it up Click.Sending up no Retsena last weekend was me, because I was again in New Orleans, this time without Mary. But I was with some pretty nice people. Claudia Joe Pfeffer, for instance. As it was a rather whirlwind trip 23 hours, I was afraid that I wouldnt get to enjoy being in New Orleans at all. However, the Pfeffers offered to squire me around, and did...a most delightful time. I got to visit their office - the Pfeffers are Tax Accountants shudder. Joe is also a camera buff, and has taken some beautiful photos which are on display in the office and home. But the most interesting thing of all was this...now, a lot of people can say that their children are married, but when Claudia and Joe say it, they mean it Claudias son is married to Joes daughter. No. Claudias daughter is married to Joes son. No. Wait a minute, Im confused. Well, suffice it to say that ones kid is married to the others kid. And theyre expecting a grandchild any moment. Now, thats really doubling up on the old pedigree.Doubling up with this month was me, from laughter, having spent the day in Sanford sitting ringside with Mignon Murray. This popular judge is one of the most amusing people I have ever known, and she never fails to get me going. Also saw Sharon Hiemenz there...sporting a very promising puppy. With all these gorgeous puppies coming along, the upcoming shows promise to be super. Talked to Jackie Liddle for a moment at the New Orleans shows Jackies nice in addition to being pretty. Also had a chance to visit with Peggy Dillard Carr, Tennessee judge and Toy breeder. Years ago Peggy had some great Poms we got to talking about it and realized that Peggy bought her first show dog in 1953. She must have been about two years old. Spoke with Roy Keiser, also, native of the Cajun area, and judging a lot of the Toy breeds. Also in town was Ed Jenner, judging the Balance in Chalmette. As the hurricane was making its approach, and I had to get out of town - no, I wasnt run out of town, I had to get back to work -1 didnt get much time to visit with Charlotte Creed or Jerrie Freia, but Charlotte is looking forward to the coming shows with great enthusiasm. Then approximately 3cc Lidocaine is used to freeze abdominal incision site.This technique on Caesarians has proven safe and effective for me over the years. I attach 1cc of Surital to the I.V. leg in case I need more anesthetic but rarely have to use any as it will depress the pups more.At the conclusion of surgery or in respiratory arrest problems also rare with this technique the Innovar can be reversed with 14-12Xx Naloxone I.V.. The Naloxone at the conclusion of surgery speeds up the waking process and mothering ability of the bitch although many of the bitches are alert enough at the conclusion of surgery that Naloxone isnt necessary. However, as with heat stroke and discussions on whelping, it is one that occasionally needs repeating. I have always been aware of the possible toxicity in many of the garden plants in our lush yard, as my husband grows much of his own nursery stock for his landscape design business. The dogs have never been allowed access to some of the very dangerous plants, but with some of the more common ones such as azaleas, they are kept trimmed such that the dogs, who are not plant chewers anyway, cannot reach the pretty blossoms. We never had any problems, but that was all before Harry arrived. This little puppys favorite activity as a young pup was to imitate a pirrhana when he was handed food - no problem teaching this boy to bait However, since he didnt eat or chew things he shouldnt, it never occurred to me that he might try to have plants for lunch one day. My reason for relaying this story is to that all of you will think about what may be accessible to your dogs, both in your house and your yard.When Harry was about four months old, he graduated from romping in our deck area to running in the yard with the big guys. Since he was real good right from the start, he gradually eased into longer and longer periods in the garden area. All went fine until one warm day when I arrived home from work to one very panicked husband, who said You better go check your puppy. Hes been sick all over his pen. Now, Michael never has been one to think that the finer points of having dogs involve cleaning up their by-products, but with one glance at his face, I realized he was very serious and ran inside to see what the problem was. There sat one very pathetically sickpup, huddled in the farthest corner of this pen and totally horrified at the mess he had made. I was even more horrified, for this was right during the middle of the awful period of unexplained bacterial enteritis that was attacking young, vaccinated dogs across the country, and many who were not caught in time died at the veterinary hospital where I work. I rushed Harry to the vet and we began immediate emergency treatment, assuming he had caught the enteritis. The only difference in my pup was his temp - 105.4 degrees. None of the affected pups up until then had been running a fever. We ran all the standard tests, including a Parvo titer, but at this point my vet was now suspecting a toxic substance. His first thought was a pesticide reaction, but this was ruled out as all that had been used was a mild pyrethrins spray. I went home with a very heavy heart that night and began searching for what had possibly poisoned the pup. After two-and-a-half days of hospitalization, Harry came home. By this time we knew it had been a plant that he had ingested, for they had found little green pieces of foreign material in his vomit.While weeding, Michael finally came across the culprit. Harry had apparently hopped up and down and caught a branch of a hydrangea plant, pulled it down and chewed up a budding blossom. After consulting my list of toxic plants I discovered that hydrangea, the entire plant, was on the list. And that is why I am printing the list again, with the reminder to never underestimate a dog, for sooner or later everyone acquires a Harry who is inventive enough to get into things he shouldnt This list is probably not totally complete, but it encompasses most common garden and house plants. If your Human looks best at a brisk walk, take off Make them walk briskly by surging forward. If they haul back on your lead and choke you, fall back a bit, but again - surge forward - eventually, they will get the idea and let you set the pace.When stacking, do not - at first - stand perfectly still. Move a foot or drop your head. When they correct you, other Humans will get the impression that your Human knows what heshe is doing. You must never let your Human become too complacent. This ruins the sport. There are many ways to keep your human alert and on hisher toes, and you must know when to employ these various methods. If things are going too well, and your human is wearing a Smug Expression which is not a disqualification, but is a fault, wait until youre at the end of the Down-And-Back, and...go to the bathroom This never ceases to get your Human back into the swing of things. This also provides exercise for the Ring Steward, who was probably falling asleep, anyway.If you are showing your human in dirt or mud, refuse to stand still unless heshe kneels down next to you. This will allow you to impress the judge with the fact that your Human cares more about you than their best Sunday clothes. This method is especially effective if you have dressed your human in white or beige. Does your Human use bait Wonderful This gives you the opportunity to leap at the bait and in turn gives them the opportunity to calm you. See how well that Human can handle the DogAll in all, showing can be fun if you dont overdo or get your Human uptight.
