Gorgeous dogs and a fantastic city make for a memorable week, indeed. The APC event was on Sunday, February 10, with Westminster KC at Madison Square Garden keeping us occupied on Monday and Tuesday, the 11th and 12th. We always spend five or six days in the city, and yet there still never seems time to visit with all the people we would like to, but we do our best.We flew up on Saturday this year in plenty of time to fight with the Penta Hotel about our accomodations but eventually I was able to wrest the key to a lovely room away from an ill-tempered desk clerk named Maria. The No Dogs policy was rescinded this year due to over-booking at the Southgate so the lobby was happily awash in canines. We did some shopping, had a late lunch and then ventured on to the Ken-I Ration Show Dogs of the Year Awards at the Grand Hyatt, one of our favorite fetes of the year. All of dogdom gets gussied up for this affair and rightfully so the hotel is grand and the function, fabulous. During the cocktail hour preceding the dinner and awards program we enjoyed visits with many friends including Anna Katherine Nicholas Marcia Foy, Lea Maxwell Riddle, Peggy Reed Joy Brewster, among others too numerous to name. Following the press preview and cocktail hour and dinner, the awards program began. Winning for Top Toy dog with 97 Toy Group 1s was the stunning Maltese Ch. Sand Island Small Kraft Lite, bred and owned by Carol Frances Andersen of Bayport, MN and shown to perfection by the gorgeous Vicki Abbott of Texas. On the way to the top Henry managed to break several records, including that for the most allbreed Bests in Show won by a Maltese. And he shows no signs of stopping. Many will remember when Carol owned the Number One Pom, Ch. D-Nees Darin Duffie who was piloted to the top by Jackie Liddle, now Jackie Liddle Stacey. This year Carol won not only for Top Toy, but also top Hound with her Norwegian Elkhound, Ch. Vin-Melcas Calista co-owned by Harve Lubin and handled by Pat Craige, also winner of 97 Group Firsts, quite an accomplishment. Over and above all that, Pat Craige was inducted into the Ken-L Ration Hall of Fame, a complete The Pom Reader April 1991surprise to her as the winner was unannounced until the very last minute. Well, the award may have been a surprise, but it is certainly deserved.Another pleasant surprise was the Mystery Celebrity Speaker at the Quaker Oats dinner, Matt Bahr, the gentleman who kicked the field goal that got the Giants into the Super Bowl. We were not sure what to expect, but the man was super erudite, charming, down-to-earth and well-informed about dogs and our sport, Mr. Barr made many new fans on that Saturday evening in New York. His speech concerned what it takes to be a champion, the hard work and determination necessary, and it was quite fitting to the occasion. An excellent choice by Quaker Oats and again we thank the company for treating the dog fancy to such a splendid function.Following the Quaker Oats dinner we ourselves had an unexpected pleasure. Reading on the plane I had noted that one of my all-time favorite singers was appearing at the Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Center. I managed to get us on the waiting list for the late show, and finagled some inside information from the coat check girl about Rainbow showroom politics. Since we were on the legitimate list I refused to slip the MaitreD 50 bucks to ensure our ringside seats we punched and kicked our way in and enjoyed a delightful hour of Rosemary Clooney. She looked a little tired and said she had a cold but the velvet voice box was intact. Truly magnificent.And we had two drinks and it cost 100 dollars. I would have paid 200.Sunday morning the real show began with the American Pomeranian Clubs Specialty show held in conjunction with the Empire Specialty Associated Clubs of New York, the brainchild of Pug breeder and judge Shirley Thomas. The combined Specialty shows were dedicated to our armed forces serving in the Persian Gulf. The show was held at Pier 90 of the New York Passenger Ship Terminal, just blocks from the Skyline at which many people and Poms were staying. The new showsite was clean and bright and the rings were large but many expressed irritation with parking problems and crowding around the rings and in the grooming area. In addition the carpet in the grooming area was covered with visquine, slippery as the devil and a potential health hazard. More than one person was seen, dog in arms, frantically trying to retain an upright position as he slipped and slid. I practically landed in Eleanor Millers lap at one point. Another problem especially irritating to me surfaced almost immediately. I dont know who physically assembled the show catalogue but the pages are already falling out, which is ridiculous and certainly not the fault of the Club. All in all, however, for a first-time attempt the combined Specialties could only be called a success, and the apparent problems were nothing that could not be rectified in the future.One complaint expressed by many can never be changed in this context and that was that of combining shows itself. For years the Specialty was held independently at the Roosevelt Hotel and we all looked forward to it immensely. Not to say that working in conjunction with other breeds and clubs is bad, its just different and this was mentioned by many people. Great Elms Prince Charming II, the 1988 Best in Show winner as he strutted regally for his handler and owner Skip Piazza. We were all so proud of Skip for this appearance as he is in ill health. Among others proud as peacocks were co-owner Olga Baker, us, always fans of the team, and Im sure that his breeder Ruth Beam was glued to the TV screen. All in all, again a delightful trip to two of the nations most exciting shows.Sally Baugniet called with the news that The American Pomeranian Club, in conjunction with the Sooner Pomeranian Club will hold a judges study group on the breed with Seminar and Hands On conformation judging. The function will be held at the Mid-City Community Center, Oklahoma City, OK, on May 23rd from 530 to 830 p.m. The fee for attending is 10.00. Quote from Chapter III, the AKC free booklet, POLICIES AND GUIDELINES FOR REGISTRATION MATTERS.AKC further advises that if you must enter into an agreement it is vitally important that it be in writing, signed by all parties pertinent and should be SIMPLE. Because for every clause that cannot be fulfilled an alternative must be considered. I believe AKC is making the old cant-see-the-forest-for-the-trees point. We have all seen contracts like thisA If one pup is born you pay half the stud fee.B If 2 pups are born you pay the full stud fee.C If 3 pups are born we co-own the 3rd one and you pay only half the stud fee.D If 4 pups are born we co-own the 4rd one, you pay half the stud fee and sell the 4th pup and we split the price received.E If 5 pups are born I will take it and give up the co-ownership on the 3rd pup and you may either pay half the stud fee and sell the 4th pup and split the price received or pay the stud fee in full and keep the 4th pup.F If 6 pups are bom...You havent seen a contract like that between stud dog owner and bitch owner Believe me - such convoluted contracts are made between otherwise intelligent people trying to cover all the bases and do manage to strike out when the hazy clauses are read before the judge.This is not to say you should be so simple as to oversimplify AKC, under Stud Contracts in the above booklet, states that the contract should clearly state all obligations and circumstances. Clearly being the pivotal word.It is also noteworthy to understand that AKC, in the booklet, states that the stud owner is responsible for collecting the fee. The stud owner may elect to take cash or a puppy or puppies, etc., but unless the stud owner has a written agreement signed by all parties concerned in which it is specifically stated that owner of sire is not obligated to sign litter The Pom Reader April 1991forms until stud fee is paid AKC takes the position that stud owner is required to sign an application certifying to the fact that a particular dam was bred to the sire on a specified date of mating.Olympia once was witness to a case where a verbal agreement was made between two friends who eventually became enemies. No cash stud fee was paid by the owner of the female but in lieu of same a Poodle puppy was traded to the stud owner. The stud service was between two Poms. The Poodle was handed over with papers signed and the stud service performed. Shortly before the birth of the Pom litter of 1 animosity developed between the parties and the stud owner refused to sign the litter papers. The owner of the litter sent a note reminding stud owner of the deal and requested it be honored. The stud owner returned a hasty fireshot in the form of a signed note to the effect that no Poodle puppy was worth the stud fee of her male Pomeranian but in the note she did acknowledge that her stud was bred to the bitch in question. That note was duly sent along to AKC who wrote to the stud owner. This AKC letter was ignored. The owner of the female received notification of the AKC letter to stud owner and when no action was taken in several week time AKC was again contacted and this time the AKC letter the stud owner received was not so kindly. Ipso facto, signed litter papers were received within 7 days The AKC took the position that even if the owner of the female had NOT given a puppy in lieu of the fee and there being no contract the stud owner was obligated to sign the litter papers. The good of this outcome was that the owner of the female was able to get what she was entitled to but the bad could have been thatthe owner of the female might also have gotten her litter application signed without paying anything. So if you must enter into stud service agreements make it simple but put it in writing and have each party including all co-owners of sire and dam sign it and have 3 copies made, one for stud owner, one for bitch owner and one for AKC in the eventuality there is a dispute.In their booklet AKC states that co- ownerships, in far too many cases, lead to problems. While AKC registration papers provide for more than one owner, they recommend that co-ownerships be avoided. They say that in their experience purchasing a dog outright is preferable. AKC points out that if a coowner is suspended from AKC privileges it CAN happen then for the term of that suspension recording of a transfer of the dog that is co-owned may be barred and registrations of litter sired or whelped by said dog may be barred and wins at shows may be rescinded.Without mentioning any names of course, Olympia knows personally of such a dilemna a perfectly nice bitch is withheld from being bred, sold or shown by the first owner because the second owner is under suspension of indeterminate length. The first owner can wring hands but those hands are tied. The dog is technically useless and cannot even be given away as the second, suspended, owner can still lay claim to it. Fodder for thought.Then, of course, there are the two Ds Inevitable Death and Never-lmpossible Divorce. Ordinary co-ownerships between spouses and friends seem to unhazardous that we give them little thought. Until we hear of a case where the husband died and the wife discovered that in his will, which she had^OLYMPIA continued...not been privileged to read, he left his co- ownership share of the dogs to his mistress. Too funny for words It happened. A messy case and the details were - natch - juicy, but well leave the details to some future soap opera episode and just say that the wife knew nothing about the will nor the mistress and after the shock wore off, her legal affairs in getting ownership of the dogs which she had spent her life breeding into the fine blend of bloodline and show stock she really never should have co-owned, cost her half what the dogs were valued at and the other half went into the other womans pocket And then there was the case of the divorce where he refused to sign over his rights to the dogs to her and she refused to sign over her rights to him and Solomon wasnt around to help them out with his sword so they each stubbornly held on, she retaining the dogs, he the papers and darned if I know what ever came of it but now that I recall these doings I think that as soon as I finish this article I will sit Ber- nie down for a little chat...Seriously, though, co-ownerships have their good points. There are times when you dont want to keep so many dogs you cant properly care for and yet you cant really give up a particular one for its valuable gene pool and so you agree to co-own it with the idea that you will either get it back eventually or a puppy therefrom. Or sometimes a perfectly wonderful buyer will just not have the necessary amount of purchase price and would be able to breed and show it properly so you agree to a certain amount of cash and a co-ownership until some decided-upon further compensation develops. In order to protect your future rights you must necessarily retain a legal co-ownership and in most casesthis type of co-own works out satisfactorily to all concerned.At this point in time Olympia has 3 different such co-ownerships with 3 different parties with no written contracts whatsoever and these co-ownerships are of long duration and working with no disputes quite satisfactorily to all concerned. These co-ownerships with no contracts, like so many between like- minded breeders, are based on verbal gentlemens agreements which none of the parties would dream of disrupting. First of all we are each working to obtain something...good dogs by methods of using more than one head to obtain the objective and if something goes wrong a male wont breed, a female cant reproduce without difficulties, a leg goes bad, etc. we dont condemn one another, we each took our risks and knew what risks existed and instead of quarreling over it we put our heads together and thrash out the problem and solve it by entering into another co-ownership on another dog, etc.Admittedly none of these co-ownerships involve cash exchanged, yet on the other hand valuable dogs and valuable time are involved and valuable upkeep and vet fees are paid for and so you might say we are all of us fools not to have a binding agreement and I might reply, good point, but beyond the breeding parties involved is a finely spun, long tentacl- ed network of other breeders who branch out into a long circle and the circle eventually comes right back to home and this spiderweb network knows it is a universal dogdom truth that gossip runs faster than wolves on the track of a wounded deer. If one of us injures the other via ignoring the gentlemens agreement, everyone else in the country will know about it in record time and ones reputationis ones shadow it is either close behind, just in front or right beside you. You might get away with one or two did em dirty coups, but eventually the sins ye do 2x2 must be paid for 1 x 1, as Tallulah Bankhead said in that old classic flick LIFEBOAT. Somewhere down the road a door would slam and that dog you are frothing at the mouth to have will not be yours.These things all longtime breeders know and so verbal contracts are a fact of life in the dog breeding and showing world, yet caution must be exercised at some point. Whether buyer or seller when dealing with someone you do not know or know but barely and either a dog is sold outright or on a co-ownership a contract should be maintained. If a dispute arises it would be ugly without a contract to prove intent and arrangements but it can be far uglier without that written agreement to sort out who actually said what to whom.In the interest of space or Joe will bring out his sword and cut me in two next month we will go into exactly how ugly things can get and provide some examples of contracts actually used, successfully and unsuccessfully, by breeders.In closing, for those of you who dont read the AKC Gazette check into the new amendment to Chapter 3, Section 4 of Registration Rules As of July 1, 1991, litters must be registered within 6 months from the date of whelping and individual dogs must be registered within 1 year of the date of issuance of the application. At the time I got her, I basically knew nothing about breeders and when I took her to the vet who has been her vet the entire time, both he and I were pleasantly surprised how well she fared from her ordeal. She still acts and looks like a puppy and I think that will continue for quite some time.What I wanted to know is if you could put a plea out for me in regards to a breeder who is located in Central or Northern California who wouldnt mind giving me some kind of tour of their operation and tips on what I could do better as far as grooming, health care, etc. I am not a breeder, just a fanatic Pom lover as well as animal lover who would like to be more informed. I know there aremany books out on Poms and dogs in general but the personal approach seems so much beter when it comes to discussing something which is so near and dear to my heart and most probably the hearts of many a breeder.Id greatly appreciate any help, information or guidance you could give me. The learning process never stops each day in the dog fancy you learn something new, so dont expect to pick up everything at once. Read everything you can get your hands on, and attend dog shows. It also helps to join a Club. She would go to bed with him until he got to sleep and then come back to the living room with us. Then, when we went to bed she would go back to bed with Travis.She would put him to sleep first even when she had puppies of her own.Well, two weeks before Christmas of 1990 she was having problems breathing. I woke my husband and Travis and we rushed her to our vet who was only 5 blocks away. On the way I was breathing in her nose and doing all I could. But we lost her.I had an autopsy done and it said she had a chronic heart condition since she was a puppy.Needless to say we all cried on the way home. She will always have a special place in our hearts. Your poem brought tears to my eyes and also to my husbands.
