People and dogs dogs and dog shows dogs and veterinarians what make of car is the best in which to transport dogs I voted for Lincoln Continental what hotels will or will not allow dogs and most of all what to do about the people who are not nice in dogs. There are a couple of them out there, you know. Anyhow, then she floored me with this Dont you ever get sick of the whole thingI had to think about it. When I see somebody doing damage to a breed for monetary gain, yes, I get sick. When I see an ill-kept pet or irresponsible owner, sure, I feel lousy. When competition heats up and exhibitors tempers flare, yes, I admit that sometimes I get a little disgusted. But then I read about a therapy dog program I see all the good that comes from the sport of purebred dogs I experience the pleasure given to me by my own dogs, and I know that the good far outweighs the bad. And almost inevitably, when my spirit for this sport starts to flag, somebody does something to buoy me up again.Lifting spirits around the country is the announcement of a new book on the breed to be authored by none other than the inimitable Olga Baker. Details can be found elsewhere in this magazine so suffice it to say that we are all itching to buy it, for Olga is a warehouse of knowledge on Pomeranians and an incredible goodwill ambassador for the breed.Premium lists for some upcoming shows may have an unusual item, namely THERE WILL BE A VETERINARIAN AND AN OBSTETRICIAN ON THE SHOW GROUNDS. We know why the vet, of course, but the OBGYN practitioner Well, Cheryl Jackson and Joel Taylors baby is due at any moment, but Cheryl still insists on showing dogs. Perhaps the tyke will be born in the Best in Show ring - wouldnt that be nice Best of luck and keep us posted.The other night we attended the famous Back From Iraq party for Vince Dale Adams son Chris Hines, fresh from the Persian Gulf and back to civilization. Well, we tried to act civilized, and it wasnt easy. Among other Pom fanciers in attendance was Jean Hurley, and we enjoyed a long conversation about...what else Poms. Both Jean and Dale continue to enjoy success in the show ring but Jeans new puppy is not aptly named. Instead of Oscar he should be called Wild Man of Borneo - he is a delightful little terror with boundless energy. Reminds me of my first The Pom Reader May 1991seemed that they were in for life. Then, the next thing I knew they were nowhere to be seen. Whatever it was that drove them out must have been something big. But Im not too worried about me quitting, for I fought too hard to get in. I had to fight myself.When I was four I fell in the pool and almost drowned. I had to overcome an incredible fear of water after that, but went on to become a lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor. I still swim every chance I get. When I was five I was traumatized by a large mongrel dog, resulting in a paralyzing fear of canines. And you see where I am now...And Ill see you next month, same time, same place. I asked for your favorite photos and comments about your Pomeranians. I never expected to receive a story from a Pomeranian himself. His owner, Georgia Van Dolah, is an author and she tells me, If the First Dog in the White House can write the story of her life, so can my Gigolo George I hope all of you will enjoy this rather unusual story, as much as I did...I dont remember much about my early days when I was very young. I recall living with an older couple. The lady sat in a chair with wheels. She would hold me in her lap and scratch my neck. When the old man walked through the house the floors would creak, and the furniture would vibrate. Lamps and what-knots setting on tables would rattle.One day a pretty lady with long blonde hair came to see us. There was a little boy with her. He smelled like a lot of animals. The Lady said, Im Pat and this is my son, Adam. I came to see the male you have for sale.The old couple invited Pat and Adam into the house and offered them chairs, and something in a cup. I didnt understand most of their converrsation. The lady in the chair with wheels told Pat, His name is George. Hes of exceptional bloodline and, has an excellent pedigree. We love him very much but with my health condition we have to move and we cant take him with us.The Pom Reader April 1991The Life and Times ofGigolo GeorgebyGeorgia Van DolahPeople are always saying, Hes so cute, and I guess I am. Anyway, I think Im cute. I try to do cute things just so people will notice me. Im fast on my feet and I look people square in their eyes when they talk to me. They say, Look at that. He acts like he knows what Im saying. Isnt he precious People like for you to look at them when they talk to you. I smile and tilt my head from one side to the other. Then, I do a little dance when they talk to me. They say, Youre adorable.I always return the compliment by saying, Thank you. I dont like anyone picking me up and mussing my beautiful golden hair, though, so I stay just out of their reach.Pat picked me up and talked to me. When she hugged me, I licked her face. I knew right-a-way that I liked her.She hugged me to her breast and said in a high-pitched voice, Hello, George. Then she talked baby talk to me and scratched my neck.Pat parted my hair and looked at my skin. He has a nice thick undercoat. Then she pulled my mouth open and looked inside at my teeth. I didnt mind. I had decided that I liked this lady no matter what she did to me.Adam picked me up and pulled my tail. I barked and tried to bite him. He let go of me and I ran to the pretty lady and jumped up in her lap. She hugged me close.The dark beard under his chin and the light colored bib show off his bright orange coat. His eyes sparkle like gold nuggets, Pat told the lady. I raised my ears and turned my head sidweways. She hugged me again. I have female Pomeranians and hell make a good stud.I had heard the word, stud, before, but didnt know what it meant.Pat and the lady in the chair with wheels exchanged some papers, then Pat said Come on, George - lets go home. She carried me out to her car and put me in a box in the back. She got in the front seat and started driving. I smelled all around this box and thought I caught the scent of a female. I jumped out of the box to go find her. I hopped up on the seat and looked at Pat from behind. She had pretty hair.Adam looked at me and told Pat, He jumped out of the box. I thought he was a big tattletale. I gave him a dirty look and growled. I was letting him know I would not put up with any nonsense from him. Then, forgetting about the female, I lay down on the seat and slept.Finally the car stopped. The lady got out and opened the back door for me. Come meet your new friends, George. I wagged my tail and pranced on the floor of the car. She smiled and said, Isnt he cute Adam didnt say anything. 9The Life and Times of Gigolo George continued...Pat carried me to the back yard and I licked her face. She tasted good. She put me in a large pen, with a grass floor, all by myself. This is your new home, George. I began to check out my surroundings.There was a real nice house with blankets inside. Two large bowls sat in easy reach. One contained fresh sweet water and the other had some very tasty food in it. It was a real neat bachelor pad.Suddenly, I heard the girls cheering. I looked at the adjoining pen and there they were - six of the most beautiful lassies I had ever seen, staring at me through the fence. They were all different colors, with lush dense coats and beautiful markings. They were urging me to them. I dug my hind feet in the dirt and twisted my rump, doing a little dance I had learned. I shook my long golden coat I knew the girls could see it glisten in the suns rays. I barked and tried to act real cool batting my long eyelashes. Finally, I ran to the fence and kissed each lovely mouth. They all kissed me in return.I felt a strange stirring in my belly. I was becoming a man and was having man urges. I was going to like this place. I began to mark my territory.Soon Pat opened the door to my pen. George, this is Sheba. A red ball of fur stood just inside my pen. Her stance and poise were of pure thoroughbred Pomeranian. Sheba held her elegant head high and her exquisite body beckoned. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. I ran over and kissed this incredible creature right on the mouth. I told her that I loved her and would always be true to her if she would just love me in return. She smelled wonderful, and the urge in my stomach was becoming a sharp pain. Sheba answered, Yeah, yeah. Get on with it, Buddy.I decided to let my true love take the lead since I was new at this game of mating, and she was obviously more experienced. Sheba was a very good teacher, and it was love at first sight. My passion was so great that I wouldnt let my darling out of my sight. I wanted to be next to her constantly. I followed her to every comer of the pen.Sheba liked her privacy, though, and when I wouldnt leave her alone she turned and nipped me on the nose. I stayed away from her for a while, but soon my desire for her increased, and I just couldnt stand it any longer. I had to be close to her again. I loved her so much.Later that day a very tall man that Pat called Bill came out to my pad and looked at me. I heard him say, Just what we need. Another dam dog. I thought Up yours, buddy. This was my kingdom and I had a harem in the next pen. I growled as he turned to go back to the house, then I went back to Sheba.The next day Pat came out and talked to me for a while. I wasnt in any mood to talk or be cute this time. I loved Sheba and didnt want to leave her side. Pat came into the pen and picked Sheba up. I became jealous. I loved Sheba, but not THAT much. I wanted to be held, too. I barked for my new owner to pick me up, also.She looked at me and said, George, wanna breed Huh Wanna breed I didnt know what she was talking about but it sounded exciting so I barked.Pat walked out of my pen taking Sheba with her. I barked and barked for her to bring Sheba back. Breeding must mean that I would lose my sweetheart. She carried my love to the adjoining pen where all of the other girls were barking for attention. She put Sheba on the ground and picked up another one of the girls and brought her to my pen. She opened the door and said, George, wanna breed Huh Wanna breed as she sat the female down in my pen.Now, I knew what wanna breed meant. I was panting and barking. I dug my heels into the dirt and twisted my rump. I dared another man to enter my territory. Saliva ran from my mouth. The pain in my belly was pure torture. I ran to the new girl telling her that I loved her and would always be true to her if she would just love me in return. Pat hadnt told me the new girls name -1 just called her Honey.I vaguely remember hearing Pat say something like, George, I can tell that you are going to enjoy being a stud. Im going to name you Gigolo George. I think that name will fit you better. I didnt care what I was called, but from then on, every time Pat brought anyone to see me she always addressed me by my full name, Gigolo George.Before long Honey was taken away and another lovely, exciting female took her place. Sometimes Pat would bring an ugly little pup to me and say, Look, George, this is your son. I didnt care about that whelp. I wanted his mama back in my domain.This is the way my life went on for the next several years. I knew Pat loved me.She always made sure that I had a good time. Very often she would ask me if I was happy. Sometimes she would take the girls away from me altogether. I didnt mind because it gave me a chance to rest for a while. But as soon as I had my strength back Pat always brought me another girl that smelled just right.Sometimes an old couple would come to see us. Adam called them grandma and Pa Pa. I liked them very much, except, grandma always gave me a bath and sprayed stuff on me that gave me a terrible odor. The girls didnt like it and I tried to rub it off in the grass. She called me baby doll and hugged me.Pa Pa would bring me treats and call me Pretty Boy. I liked to sleep on his stomach. Sometimes he would take me bye bye in the car. I loved that.Eventually, I began to tire of the girls. When Pat brought a girl to me, I would catch her scent, then Id go lay down. They were young and full of life, but I was just too tired. I commenced going to bed earlier at night and taking more naps during the day.By this time Adam had grown into a very tall young man and we had become good friends. Many times through the years he brought my food to me and we would run and play. Sometimes he would sneak a girl to me. As he got older, he began to smell like the stuff grandma put on me. I guess she gave him a bath, also.Bill and I had a mutual understanding of each other. Sometimes he would come out and talk to me. He fixed the roof on my house and did other repairs. By now I had a great respect for my owners husband.One day Pat came out to the pen and got me. She put me in a smaller pen that read Pet Taxi across the front. We got into a different car than before and rode for a while as I looked out the window.When Pat stopped the car she carried me into a building where I heard other dogs barking. She took me into a room that smelled unusual and looked very clean. I didnt see any dirt or grass anywhere. She sat me on a table next to a man in a long white coat I didnt understand what they were saying but I sensed a change was about to take place in my life. Pat hugged me and I felt a tear fall on my face. She told me goodbye as she went out and I began to cry also. I didnt want her to leave me with this stranger.I didnt know who he was. The man picked me up and put me in a tiny pen. The Pom Reader May 199110Gigolo George continued...I thought of how feisty I had been as a young pup. A few years ago I would have bitten him for touching me, but now it just wasnt worth the trouble.The next morning the man in the white coat took me out of the pen and put me on the table again. He held me very tight and stuck something sharp in my hip. I must have gone to sleep because when I awoke, I was back in the little pen with a white rag wrapped around my middle and a severe pain in my lower abdomen. I felt something stick my leg and went back to sleep.When I woke again I was lying on a soft pillow in a box, in Pats house. I began to fret and she came running to me. I laid my ears back and whimpered trying to look pitiful. She talked baby talk to me and patted my head. I wagged my tail to show my appreciation and whined some more so she wouldnt leave me.Eventually, I began to feel better and Pat took the bandage off me. The next day while cleaning myself I noticed some of my parts were missing. I became very frightened. What had happened to them Had they fallen into this soft pillow I dug at the pillow looking for my missing parts. I was frustrated because I couldnt find what I was looking for. I began to growl and bark while I dug at the soft pillow.Pat came to me and talked baby talk again. She picked me up and looked at my stomach. I felt better now. She would see what was missing and help me find them. But when she put me back on the pillow and left the room, I didnt understand. What had happened to me Pat seemed to know about my missing parts. Had thatman in the white coat taken them Was Pat in on this betrayal I began to cry in earnest and she came running to pick me up again. She hugged me and talked baby talk, scratching my neck.I liked that and it made me feel better. Maybe I didnt need those parts after all.That afternoon grandma and Pa Pa came over. Grandma held me and crooned in my ear. Pa Pa scratched my neck. I heard Pat tell them, The vet says he weighs four pounds and is healing very well.Good. He needs a bath. Grandma wrinkled her nose.Yes. But the vet says not to bathe him for at least another week.Whew, I breathed.Grandma made a funny noise and shook her head as she sat me on the floor. Then Pa Pa carried me out to the car. I was very happy to get to go bye bye.When Pa Pa stopped the car he carried me into a big house. This is your new home now, George.Grandma put a strap around my neck with a bell that tinkled every time I moved. I was more than a little put out by that I mean, a bell at my age. Then she brought me a soft, silky pillow to take my naps on.That night Pa Pa put me in bed with him and grandma. Grandma gave me a strange look then turned on her side.It was nice to be the center of attention and have such a soft bed. Pa Pa hugged me and I snuggled against him and slept.Hmmm, I thought, Im going to like this.Ive had a good life and a lot of experience. I now live in a big house with lots of rooms. A fence separates my yard from a huge golf course where I see lots of people. Sometimes when I am feeling particularly ferocious, I run the length of the fence and bark just to scare anyone passing by. But when Im feeling cute I run to the fence, wag my tail and prance.Grandma still bathes me but she is very gentle and give me lots of treats. I have discarded the pillow to share the couch with Pa Pa at nap time, and he still takes me bye bye with him.I am now a senior citizen of nine years old. During my stay with Pat, I sired 60 puppies from those beautiful females that I still love and will always be true to forever and ever. When Im sleeping in I throw something at it When Im up with the birds and it doesnt ring I feel like nobody likes me. Cant win for losin...Like this morning. The voice on the other end of the phone was somber. Right away I knew either somebody didnt like me or somebody was dead. It was both. The somber voice harked back to 7 months prior when the owner of that voice had purchased a small female from me. I remember her well Too small for breeding, top flight type, pixie-ish personality, as sound as Sadam Husseins foreign bank accounts Very unusual for a small toy breed gal Age one-and-a-half years when she was finally placed in the right home.Only Mr. Right was now Mr. Hostile and had no intentions of letting anyone interfere with his plans to be nasty. He had finally taken this gal to be spayed, as per our agreement at purchase time she was sold without benefit of papers. She died shortly after receiving a tranquilizer prior to heavy anesthesia for surgery or so Mr. RightHostile was informed and the vet autopsied and found the female to have had a defective heart since birth and also to be quite a bit older than the seller me said, according to her teethI explained that small toy breeds with short muzzles are famed for tartar buildup on teeth and so forth and that I could prove beyond any shadow of a doubt her birth-age and that it was possible, although hardly provable at this point, that the vet misjudged the sedative and was covering his own tracks with the defective heart theory. After all, my vet had occasion to examine this gal several times and at length and found her heart to be normal and my vet is fairly well versed in examining toy breeds All to no avail.Mr. RightHostile came right to his nasty point. I have been in this situation before The Pom Reader May 1991I know all about this sort of thing and I have sued before and won. I want a refund of my purchase price or I will sue. I demurred, saying it is a democratic country we live in and Mr. RightHostile has every right to sue if he sees fit but hardly the right to assume he will win The foundation principle of this country is, after all, not guilty until so proven Mr. RightHostile then got vicious. I will call every breeder in this state and ruin your reputation. You will be put out of business Keeping my teeth clenched so I would not spit at him I replied that it was silly to stop at state level, why not call everybody in the country, spend some real money, and then sit down and take into account the percentages of his pro and con answers. Besides which Im not in business so how could I be put out of itThe final curtain fell with Mr. RightHostile promising to see me in court. Will he I dont know. Perhaps he vented his anger he showed no grief over the poor little females death and was satisfied, perhaps, since he mentioned that he knew all about this sort of thing and had sued and won before, he will go for the judges decision. But I do know that he ruined my day, perhaps my entire week, and that I sit here holding a plain piece of white paper on which is written a brief as is sales contract, which maybe Mr. RightHostile has forgotten he signed.In our state a recent law was enacted to protect pet shop clients but which also pertains to breederfanciers. It gives a 14-day liability plan after sale of a pet - the 14 days to cover most incubation times. But the law uses the word defect rather loosely. It states that if a licensed veterinarian certifies within thecoverage period that a pet shows evidence of a defect or illness the seller must either refund or replace and can be held responsible for vet expenses incurred because of this defect or illness.Now what exactly is a defect I am beginning to wonder what it is as attested to by some ignorant or buck-passing veterinarians. For instance we have the above situation plus a couple more I have witnessed A 9 pound, 8 month lively puppy was placed into a pet home for a modest sum, the home being the thing, and the innocently ignorant new owners encouraged the pup to romp he made a racecourse around the dining room table and galloped this course several times or more, encouraged by the delighted hand clapping of his owners. On one gallup around the course he banged straight into a table leg and dropped dead. Rushed to a vet in hope of a miraculous revival the vet said no hope and then offered his opinion that breeders should cease breeding such small toy breeds who are born with defective heads that cause them to drop dead at impact rather than being merely stunned Then there is the rather bizarre case of a champion female again too small for breeding who at age 2Vi was sold into a perfect home situation - elderly but still young-at-heart retirees of some income who would spoil this beauty rotten They dutifully had the female spayed and had her teeth cleaned and phoned the seller from time to time to report on how much they adored this precious gal. Then, 1 year after they bought her, they took her on an RV trip to the southwest and there, while traveling, she began to vomit blood and pass it from her OLYMPIA continued...rectum. She died rather violently. Taken to a vet they would NOT identify to the seller, the dogs non-autopsied report stated that she must have gotten a case of enteritus an extremely violent one, I would say and since she was so small that was why she succumbed so quickly. This vet said that he hated breeders who persisted in producing small toy dogs who were born with defective inner parts that when they got some simple little thing like enteritus they just keeled over and died.A month after the trip they called the seller me and said they had grieved themselves silly and had come to the conclusion that since the vet said the female was born defective, they deserved recompense After I got over my flabbergastion I reminded them although I hated to have to do so of the as is contract below they signed at sale date and also reminded them that this was 1 year after the sale and was it possible the dog got into something toxic I also asked for the name of the vet in New Mexico as I said I would happily phone him and confront him with his ridiculous statement, made without a formal autopsy They gave up the recompense idea, but not without leaving a bitter taste in their mouth for me and once more I banged my head against a brick wall, bemoaning the fact that we must deal in pets from time to time. And when I bemoaned my plight to a fellow fancier I was told that if I bred quality stock all the time I would have no pets for sale and would have no need for such nasty little contracts as an as is one...which it seems was the equivalent of being in the shady side of a used car business. Well, I dont know about you but I say show me a breeder no matter the quality of the stock that produces NOTHING BUT CHAMPIONS and has no pets for sale and I will show you how blue the moon is after NASA rockets Roquefort cheese up thereAS IS CONTRACTlAVe, the undersigned on this date_______purchased for ___ _ the following dogBreed____ Sex_____Whelped __AKC if selling with registration papers____ Name____Call name if being sold without papers.I understanmd and agree that I am purchasing this dog on a as is basis and that it wasexamined in my presence by Dr. __________veterinarian and that I am satisfied with this veterinians report of the dogs health and condition. I have been furnished with this dogs immunization record and any defect the dog may be known to have and will not hold the seller or examining veterinarian responsible for injury, illness or death of this dog afterthe above date. However, as you read, I may have that opportunity soon. Given the above prime and ridiculous examples of what can happen after you sell the dog I hardly consider this contract to be akin to selling shady used cars To me it is a self-defense mechanism And neither would I hesitate to use it on a fellow fancier if I were selling something other than a show specimen for a very low price, just in case somewhere down the road the brood needed a section and died under the anesthesia or the young puppy was permitted to jump on and off furniture and stressed out its stifles or the male got jumped by an older female and thereafter refused to breed.Speaking of males and breeding we will end this months column with a sample stud service contract and next month we will give samples of conditional sale and co-ownership contracts and discuss their clauses and what can happen for the good and bad and the REAL ugly.STUD SERVICE CONTRACTStud Dog Color______AKC___________Bitch____ Color_____ AKC ___ _______Stud Owner ___ _____ Address_________ _Bitch Owner _____ Address _____________Dates of Mating________________________Approximate Whelping Dates _____________TERMS OF CONTRACT1 One puppy constitutes a litter2 A one-time free return service is offered in event of no puppies from above mating. This return must be a next heat cycle of bitch.3 Stud owner must be notified that no puppies resulted from the breeding within 2 days after final due date of bitch.4 Stud owner will not sign AKC litter papers until after notification of number and sex of puppies and reserves the right to satisfy himherself that the puppies are indeed a result of the above purebred mating.5 Stud owner will not sign AKC litter applications until stud fee or other consideration is paid in full.6 No other terms, written or verbal, have been entered into as regards this contract unless written elsewhere on this contract above both parties signature.Signature of Stud Owner DateBitch owner DateThe above can be made fancy or plain and mayhap you might like to include a pedigree of your male on the contract or at least the sire and dam of the stud and also the bitch. But basically the above terms are the most important items on your stud contract. As stated in last months article AKC does not recognize your right to refuse to sign litter papers unless you have the reason in writing, i.e., a contract Clause 4 of the above contract is seldom seen in contracts among fellow fancier friends but it should not be so ignored. Especially by those breeding publicly to bitches of people they do not know well. Accidents happen and sometimes even intentional ones. Without a contract stating otherwise you are required to sign the litter papers for your studs service even before the litter is born and afterwards, if you should find the litter is not purebred or at least not the result of your purebred mating, it is very difficult to get papers rescinded. If they ever are. This can cause a great deal of embarrassment to your stud after all isnt it the way of dogdom that everything is always the studs fault It is better to be forearmed than sorry. Leave the door open just in case you have reason to suspect an accidental or intentional mating other than the one you performed. How many other colors and patterns are in jeopardy Is the new designation spotted AKCs shorthand for Parti How did this happenI know didnt get a vote. If this is confusing you, let me explain. AKC has changed our litter registration form. They have also created a new ruling that puppies must be registered within six months of birth. Certain colors and patterns seem to be completely deleted most of them in the exotic color range.Have you recently received a litter slip back from AKC with an explanation that your puppies cant be registered the color you know they are AKC says send in a mug shot of the pup. Front view 50 side view 50...and that six-month time limit clock is ticking away with AKCs paperwork proceeding at its usual snails pace 4-8 weeks round trip. Maybe theyll change their mind, probably not. Gosh, I guess after all these years as a breeder, I still cant tell what color my pups are What happened to the standards all colors are acceptableEarlier this month I spoke with Barbara Breden of Pombreden kennel about this matter. As a breeder of a large number of unusual colors, to her this situation is both aggravating and disheartening. Barbara pioneered the breeding of rare excessive gene colors. She spent 15 years developing and setting the colors Lavender and Lavender White. Its like a slap in the face to me, she said, to have this work, this color, demeaned as nonexistent, in the simple change of a litter form. I cant believe this is happening we have to solve this problem and quickly. I couldnt agree with her more.I have always stressed the importance of color pedigrees as a guide to breeding recessive colors and patterns. This new form, forcing breeders to designate inaccurate colors to satisfy AKC within the time limit, will play havoc with color breeding programs. The map - indicating dominant and recessive color genes - will be unavailable no one will know how to proceed.The Pom Reader May 1991I often hold my litter slips and encourage other breeders to hold theirs until their puppies have matured and have attained their adult color. In the past Ive seen blacks become wolf sables, or silver sables, blue tans become black tans, lavenders, light- chocolates, blue beavers become beavers. Some breeders go by pigment to know the next step. A light chocolate with a lavender nose and eye rims is one step away from lavender properly bred. Only the mature color can tell you this six months isnt mature enough for this discrmination. Even whites cream out.I dont know how this new form and ruling came about at AKC but Id like to know their motivation. I want our colors back, pronto The exotic color breeders want a complete explanation of the whys and wherefores of these changes. Any breeders out there feeling the same, write to AKC as I have. Time is precious where this matter is concerned protect your work. If we dont do this, it wont get done. Being an owner and amateur handler is difficult enough without having to deal with the many snooty breeders I have already run into at shows.Being thrilled at the opportunity to meet Pom breeders, and hoping to visit a few kennels, I went on my first circuit several states away last September. Right on the first day of the three-day circuit several well- known breeders had congregated in a circle just outside of the ring. I attempted to take advantage of the opportunity by introducing myself and trying to make an honest go of it. I was met with icy stares and one even said, Well, Ive never heard of youI wasnt even trying to impress anyone In fact, I was in the middle of complimenting one of the many beautiful Poms when the breeder to my right cut me off short, and stepped so directly in front of me, that if I hadnt moved I might have suffered manged toes Only one very well- known breeder showed genuine interest and patience in discussing her dogs and answering my questions, but unfortunately had come from out- of-state also.But, all in all this served to be very much an eye-opener, a disappointe- ment and bitter experience. Being a good-sport should go outside the sport itself and ring etiquette. I think several folks could take a lesson in humane relations as well.Before closing, I would like to give credit where it is due to those breeders especially Penny Dees and Betty Jo Mason who truly do go that extra mile to share experiences, offer advice and lend a hand to those of us in need. Within the framework of competition, very often peoples emotions run a little rampant and may cause us to forget what we have learned in the way of etiquette. Although it is hardly admirable, it may be understandable.But the sport of purebred dogs is open to all types, and some may seem to love dogs more than they do their fellow fanciers. As in joining any new group, be prepared to find some individuals you enjoy and some you willl never come to consider close friends. With a good attitude and a cheerful demeanor in and around the rings, you will soon find yourself a wide circle of acquaintances, and you will be firmly and happily entrenched in the family of lovers of the Pomeranian. JMcGDear Joe Duane,Remember roughly 2-3 years ago when the issue of Standardizing the Standard came up When the AKC asked all the different breed parent clubs to update and arrange their breed standards into a common form. They said that all the standards are to include certain categories which must be listed in a given order.Sound vaguely familiar Well, being that it is now the first part of 91, and I believe the request from AKC was dated September 87, Id like to know what the heck has happened to this very important issue Maybe you have heard something myself and perhaps a great deal of others have not If so, please enlighten.I must say, I cant understand for the life of me why the parent club American Pomeranian Club has apparently not put this issue, which directly affects the future and even well-being of our Poms, first on their priority list. Why have they seeminglyswept this most important and necessary breed standard update under the carpetOkay, so revising a breed standard is no easy task, but that is no excuse for not even attempting I know that many hours have been spent thank you Sally Baugniet on formatting and rewording our standard, but what has happened to these prototypes Were they ever discussed or voted upon democratically or were they just tossed out with the dirty dish waterPlease do me and hopefully others the huge favor of printing once again the Standard Format from AKC and, as what I consider to be, an excellent example of a descriptive standard - the Official Standard of the Samoyed.In the meantime I will continue researching how 2 individual points can possible make into parallel lines parallel to each other from the hock to the heel - the hock is the heel, how deep is fairly deep, how wide is not too wide, and how short is rather short. And remember that according to our breeds general description a Pom is no more than a generic short-backed dog who appears alert and intelligent. Oh darn, all this time I thought Poms were known for qualities such as a COAT Not to mention their SIZE and TEMPERAMENT. This 24-hour hotline answers questions from across the nation to help save the lives of poisoned animals.It is important to call this center for questionings about animal poisonings, said William Buck, the centers director, because people at human poison hotlines dont have enough knowledge of different species to answer questions. Collies, for instance, are more sensitive to some drugs than other dogs. Also, there is a tremendous range of variability, Buck said. Induced vomiting may beappropriate for dogs or cats, but can kill a rabbit or a horse. Animals are more prone to exposure to toxic compounds than most humans. Humans seldom drink from a puddle of freshly drained antifreeze, but dogs and cats will lap up sizeable amounts and become poisoned. Insecticides are mistakenly applied to animals. The ideal size for show specimens is four to five pounds. ProportionThe Pomeranian in build and appearance is a cobby, balanced, short-coupled dog. The legs are of medium length in proportion to a well-balanced frame. SubstanceThe body is well ribbed and rounded. The brisket is fairly deep and not too wide.HeadHead well proportioned to the body, wedge-shaped, with a foxlike expression. Eyes bright, dark in color and medium in size, almond shaped and not set too wide apart nor close together. Pigmentation around eye rims must be black, except self-colored in brown and blue. Ears small, carried erect and mounted high on the head and placed not too far apart. Skull not domed in outline. A round, domey skull is a major fault. MuzzleThere is a pronounced stop with a rather fine but not snipy muzzle. Pigment around lips must be black, except self-colored in brown and blue. BiteThe teeth meet in a scissors bite, in which part of the inner surface of the upper teeth meets and engages part of the outer surface of the lower teeth. One tooth out of line does not mean an undershot or overshot mouth. An undershot mouth is a major fault.Neck, Topline, BodyNeck- The neck is rather short, its base set well back on the shoulders. Topline is level. Body- The body is cobby, being well ribbed and rounded. Chest- The brisket is fairly deep and not too wide. TailThe tail is characteristic of the breed. It turns over the back and is carried flat, set high.ForequartersShoulders The Pom is not straight in shoulder, but has sufficient layback of shoulders to carry the neck proudly and high. Forelegs- The forelegs are straight and parallel, of medium length in proportion to a well balanced frame. Pasterns- The Pomeranian stands well up in toes. Down in pasterns is a major fault. Dewclaws on the forelegs may be removed. Cow-hocks or lack of soundness in hind legs or stifles are major faults. Dewclaws, if any, on the hind legs are generally removed. FeetThe Pomeranian stands well up on toes.CoatBody CoatDouble-coated a short, soft, thick undercoat with longer, coarse, glistening outercoat consisting of guard hairs which must be harsh to the touch in order to give the proper texture for the coat to form a frill of profuse, standing- off straight hair. A soft, flat or open coat is a major fault. Tail Coat-It is profusely covered with hair. Leg Coat- The front legs are well feathered and the hindquarters are clad with long hair or feathering from the top of the rump to the hocks. Trimming Trimming for neatness is permissible around the feet and up the back of the legs to the first joint trimming of unruly hairs on the edges of the ears and around the anus is also permitted. Overtrimming beyond the location and amount described in the breed standard should be heavily penalized.ColorClassifications- The Open Classes at Specialty shows may be divided by color as follows Open Red, Orange, Cream Sable Open Black, Brown Blue Open Any Other Allowed Color.Acceptable colors to be judged on an equal basis. Any solid color, any solid color with lighter or darker shadings of the same color any solid color with sable or black shadings parti- color sable and black tan. Black Tan is black with tan or rust, sharply defined, appearing above each eye and on the muzzle, throat, and forechest, on all legs and feet and below the tail. Parti-color is white with any other color distributed in even patches on the body and a white blaze on the head. A white chest, or leg on a whole-colored dog except white is a major fault.GaitThe Pomeranian moves with a smooth, free, but not loose action. He does not elbow out in front nor move excessively wide nor cow-hocked behind.
