He is a super-sound little boy with an excellent coat of pale cream, good pigmentation, tiny ears and a happy, outgoing temperament. All his points were taken from either Puppy or Bred-By classes, and most of them were earned on the highly competitive Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Florida Circuits. A heartfelt Thank you to the judges that found him worthy of his title.Very special thanks are due to my son, Stuart, for all the love and training he gives Moonshine, and for handling him to ten of his points. A local talk show sprang to life the host was interviewing a woman named Elaine who is, I guess, an expert on coffee. I was amazed - I never realized quite how ignorant I am when it comes to coffee. I paid close attention. The lady had coffees that taste like coffee, coffees that dont taste like coffee, coffees that will wake you up, coffees that will put you to sleep in short, she had lots of exotic kinds of coffee. I was very impressed until she made the following statement Yes, Dale, its true You can set the scene, set the whole mood, design the entire evening around the perfect cup of coffee Now she tells me. Here Ive just spent a week, all my energy, and countless dollars going to the Garden when I could have stayed home, brewed up a batch, and gotten the same kick. Sure. Im sorry, Elaine, but thats asinine. Obviously youve never been to the Garden.But we have, and again this year it was great. We flew up on Friday this year and, believe it or not, our flight was 23 minutes early getting into JFK. We were amazed - this has never happened to us before. Our fourteen pieces of luggage, and dogs and X- pens, arrived in perfect condition and the weather was glorious as we rode on down to our hotel this year it was the Roosevelt. We had attended the APC Specialties in this facility in times past, but this was our first time to actually stay there. I am happy to report that we had absolutely no complaints about the accomodations or the service. We were checked in in three minutes flat, in itself a miracle. After a quick dinner it was lights out - much was going on the next day.For numerous years the AKC Gazette Reception had been held in the AKC Library last year they moved it to the Dog Museum of America, but this year we were back upstairs. Director Roberta Vesley provided an exhibition of sculpture and paintings by Stephen Huneck. While last years reception in the museum was rather subdued, a return to the library brought back the jovial, exciting atmosphere for which this function is known. Again there was an unbelievable array of delicacies on the buffet and again this year the company was stimulating. We had a super reunion with Darrell Olga Baker - Olga, who is now President of the American Pomeranian Club, also writes the Pom column for the AKC Gazette. We also enjoyed speaking with James Dearinger, Secretary of AKC, and of course President William Stifel. Again this year the Reception was beautifully organized, and we thank the Gazette for once again inviting us.Saturday evening brought the Ken-L Ration Show Dogs of the Year Awards in the Empire State Ballroom of the Grand Hyatt. To the strains of a string quartet, dog fanciers in their very finest raiment mix and mingle during cocktail hour the ebb and flow in the high-ceilinged room provides ample opportunity for greeting old friends and meeting new. Soon begins the grand exodus into the lovely dining room exquisitely appointed, cavernous without seeming cold, here the atmosphere of excitement approaches a fevered pitch. Following a sumptuous repast, the real event of the evening begins The Academy Awards of the show.dog world. The top dog in each of the Groups and the Top Obedience Trial dog for the year are honored. Proudly representing the Toy Group was the Shih Tzu, Ch. Cabrands Agent Orange V Lou Wan, affectionately known as owned by Robert Koeppel of New York andhandled by Daryl Martin of Highland Park, Illinois. Adding to the glamour of the evening was the presence of guest speaker Gary Collins, host of Hour Magazine, and his lovely wife Mary AnnThe Pom Reader March 1987Mobley. A charming couple, and a fantastic evening. Enough gratitude cannot be expressed to the Quaker Oats Company for this tremendous function in celebration of the sport of purebred dogs, honoring the champions of champions - again this year we join with the whole dog fancy in saying Thank you, Quaker OatsSunday morning brought the APC Specialty we have complete coverage elsewhere in the magazine, but I have to say that this was one of the best yet. Ch. D-Nees Darin Duffie was the big winner, taking the Specialty from the Veterans class. It was, indeed, quite an affair I believe one of the most successful Specialties yet. That evening there was a cocktail hour and buffet for the exhibitors at our table was Dorothy Bonner, to whom the Specialty was dedicated. Dorothy gave me a quote I love Breeding dogs is like playing cards. If you discard all your bad cards faults, you end up with a pretty good hand. Then it was on to parties and more parties no one ever goes to sleep early Garden week, and by Monday many are showing signs of weakening.But the show must go on, and did somehow we made it until Tuesday, day of Toy judging Bill Bergum of California presided over Poms, choosing Ch. Precious Petites Gabriel as Best of Breed. Gabriel is, of course, owned by Claudia Pfeffer and handled by the glamorous Kathy Bucher. We ran to congratulate Claudia and couldnt find her - later we learned she was doing the boogaloo up in the rafters. But there was more to follow promptly at 800, following Sporting and Hounds was the event we had been waiting for since last year TOY GROUP AT THE GARDENAmid the potted chrysanthemums and sweeping lights, the Toys made their entrance to great welcome from the audience. The energy level was at its peak suddenly, judge Keke Blumberg swept into the ring, shimmering in silvery-blue satin the ManhattanHamptonsPalm Beach fashion plate sitting next to me said, Who is that Shes gorgeous True, true, but everything in the ring was gorgeous-a fabulous array of Toys from which Mrs. Blumberg had to choose her four favorites, not an easy task. With one last look around her ring, Blumberg made her choices First to the Peke, Ch. Briarcourts Coral Gable Second to the Toy Poodle, Ch. Jodans Winter Jasmine THIRD TO THE POM, Ch. Precious Petites Gabriel, and Fourth to the Italian Greyhound, Ch. West- winds Sweet Sassy. Again this year Gabriel made the Pom fancy proud - and brought down the house with one little antic as Mrs. Blumberg was taking one last glance at her exhibits, Gabriel looked her square in the eye and let out with a hearty Woof-Woof-Woof, as if to say, Hey, get over here and hand me a ribbon...and that she did. CONGRATULATIONSOf course, having done the boogaloo for best of breed, Claudia had to think fast how to celebrate this exciting win. didnt see it, but rumors abounded...she did the tango on the top of Trump Tower... she did the rumba in Rockefeller Center... she did the cancan on the roof of a taxicab... she did the waltz in the lobby of the Waldorf. I dont know how these vicious rumors get started, but suffice it to say that later that week Claudia flew home, and she didnt need a planeAnd speaking of congratulations, Happy Anniversary] Were one year older and getting better all the time But how will we celebrate the anniversary of The Pom Reader, the winners at the APC Specialty, and the winners at the Garden I know I know Im going right now to make the PERFECT CUP OF COFFEEUntil April, all the best, and remember.. Foxaire My Sweet Promise to visit Claudia Pfeffer and Ch. Bev- Nors Fudge Ripple. Now they have a beautiful 10 week old female puppy waiting to follow in Mommy Daddys footsteps. Look out CaliforniaBob Clegg Kristine Leonard Moonshine finished their 7-year-old homebred male Ch. Cheap Shot, and it was a testimony to his quality that he went on to a short campaign winning BB over tough competition at his age. He is the sire of their female Ch. Moonshine Snapshot who also had a successful year winning some memorable BB and and one time went on to a Group III. Kristine took snapshot to Mexico City and won her Mexican International titles in 4 straight shows And at one show she was BB and on to another Group ill.Sue Philip Conlee finished a heavy coated, little male Ch. Del Sols Mighty Murphy. Shown by Mitch Wooten he also accumulated quite a few BBs. It was overheard that he finished his Mexican International championships in 4 straight show at Mexicali, and that this included some Group placements or wins Unable to confirm this at press time, a more accurate report can be included in the next issue.Art Joy Davison Joart, popular judges with the Southern California Pom fanciers, were visiting with everyone at one of the recent shows, and talk turned to Edna Girardot and the Scotia Poms. Art said that Scotia was one of his favorite lines of Poms. Art Joy purchased Ch. Scotia President Jim from her many years ago, and even today Fury is seen in many of the pedigrees of the top winning Poms in our area. Art said that he lived to be 15 years old, and that his last puppy, sired when Fury was 14 years of age, was Ch. Jo-Art Camille. Camille was one of those flyers that finished in a few straight shows.Kim Dickinson just got back from Mexicali, Mexico she took Am. Mex. Ch. Raps Enchantress of Beaver and won her last international championship point - and Chanie is eight year old Quite an accomplishment. Kim earlier had finished Ch. Franks Loma Beacan of Beaver with a prestigious win at the San Diego Pomeranian Club Specialty. Beacan is the last son of the famous Beaver, and he is owned and bred by Ellen Harley Frank.Lana Ejchorszt finished a little male, Ch. Sungold Bingo Lil Muller, that she bought from Ray Anna LaFortune. After winning his American title she sent him to Canada where he finished his Canadian championship in quick, high style including some Group wins and a Best in Show. He also has a Certificate toward his Mexican International championship.Connie Byron Hendricks Khani finished 2 homebred champions. The male is Ch. Khani Solid Gold and the female is Ch. Khani Spectacular Solitaire. When Edna Girardot had to give up her very successful breeding program over 150 champions with the Scotia prefix on her doctors advice, they were fortunate that Edna allowed them to buy some of her favorite top producers asThe Pom Reader March 1987well as some young stock. These Ch. Scotia Dennis Inspiration, his mother Ch. Scotia Pipers Chintily Kobyko, and a 7-year-old great producer Ch. Scotia Best Yets Lisa Doll who is one of the few living Ch. Sungolds Gay Cavilier grandchildren. They had already previously purchased Solitaires sire, Ch. Scotia Litleman Spectacular.Janet Hovey and Dan Farrell JDs turned the Northwests loss into our gain. Leaving Idaho and coming along with Janet and Dan on their move down into our territory were Ch. Circle M Comes A Hossman and Emcees Truly A Diamond. Since coming here Janet and Dan have added the Poms from Sharon Cobbs dispersed kennel. Although Sharon was not showing she had some lovely Jolly Wee stock. Welcome.Dorothy Jack Keller Sun-Dee finished the championship on their black female Ch. Sun-Dees Juba Lisa. They also added to their breeding stock with 3 purchases from Carol Roberts Morris Carson. They are Ch. Emcees Majestic Deano of Tico, who has already won a BB for them, a year old female Emcees Terrific Wee Greta, and a 6 month female puppy Emcees Twinklin Star.Sylvia Kelly De Amo has a special place in her heart for the Pom. Twenty five years ago she founded and was first president of the Shih-Tzu Club. And she has been a moving force in Shih Tzu since then. Now she is going to support our Poms. She entered our circle with the purchase of Ch. Patties Duffies Lil Skipper. She has been campaigning him and doing very well with him. He was BISS at the last San Diego Pomeranian Club Specialty. She has now added Ch. Tim Sues Puff the Magic Dragon. She also has a young boy at home growing coat and looking forward to May. His name is Pomirish Scoots Berry De Amo. He is co-owned with and bred by Sally Baugniet. She wont do any breeding for a while yet since she has world-wide travel plans for most of 1987.Darlys Flaata Damata finished Damata A Certain Magic in style going BB over some Champions OOPS--seems Darlys and the AKC didnt agree on a show that started off as 5 points and dwindled down to 2 points. So Magic is short 1 point. Its predicted that hell get this point probably by the time the next issue is off the press.Anna Ray LaFortune Sungold are the backbone of the California Pom fancy. They are unassuming to have accomplished so much. Always quick to help a newcomer, they will share their knowledge with others who will listen. In 1986 they put 15 BBs on Ch. Mullers Encore owned by Lillian David Muller before his retirement to stud. They finished 2 Champions for client Sandy Gonos who they say is an upcoming new breeder, Ch. Alex- sands Weehearts Whodunnit and Ch. Cordies Jokers Wild. After finishing, Joker was specialed three times winning 2 BBs. They put major wins on Ch. Twin Pines Tico Tico, Ch. Khani Spectacular Solitaire Ch. Maranathas Lil Hallelujah owned by Gloria Carlin, she is the fifteenth champion for the LaFortunes Ch. Millbrooks El Gran Caballero and Riders Jolly Katrina also owned by Gloria Carlin. Ch. Sungolds Knick Knack owned by Anne Katsilometes finished last year. And they finished 3 dogs of their own. Two were Ch. Kazars Short Stop and Ch. Sungolds Dyn O Moe. At one of the shows we fell in love with a beautiful female puppy that was out of Ch. Sungolds Karat by Ch. Thelduns Almond Fudge. We kept watching for her to begin her show career, but she never showed up. One day I picked up the AKC Show Records...and there she was, already Ch. Sungolds Kazar Almond Joy Anna said, We entered her in a few shows while we were away from home, and she finished so fast we never did get to enter her around here. They also sent Ch. Cherokees Summer Fashion back to be bred to Ch. Macs Maybe I Will, and they have a nice female out of this litter.Fern Rodrigues Sun Ray has been in Poms for many years with much success. Mary is an owner who likes to handler her own Poms.QUICK JANUARY NEWS NOTES...Ann Don Kovach finished their first and a homebred to boot Champion - Ch. Kays Gran- daddy Wasa Gambler. She was ably handled by Lana Ejchorszt.There were two puppy flyers introduced. One was a male, Lanas Top Priority who is bred owned, and shown by Lana Ejchorszt he picked up 2 big majors. The other was a female Khani Dream bred, owned and shown by Byron Connie Hendricks.Ray Anna LaFortune put a big 5 point major on Alexsands Golden Whisper. Whisper is from Arizona and is bred owned by Alexandra Gus Gonos. He only needs one more major to finish. This has been the only 5 point major of the new year.KC OF BEVERLY HILLS The Kennel Club of Beverly Hills entry on February 1 was supported by the City of Angels Pomeranian Club Los Angeles area with a large, quality entry and lots of excitement. The highlight was the beautiful trophy table full of sparkling crystal trophies.Famed Mitchell Wooten judged the Sweepstakes, and had one of the largest Sweeps entries ever in Southern California. Best in Sweepstakes went to Khani Dream mentioned above, and BOS Sweeps went to Millwood Knil Knac, a 7-month puppy bred and owned by Jean Mill. What a great beginning in his first show. My friend will not mail anything important if Mercury is in retrograde, since things get lost or misplaced during that time.If, as Astrologists believe, the planets rule so many aspects of our lives, I would like to know the configuration of the planets governing the Southern part of the U.S.A. during the first two weeks in January....why It seems that during that time of the year, Rumors hatch and circulate faster than the blood circulates through our systems. It is amazing and it happens every year - no matter whatA Toy breeder friend of mine was the subject of the Yearly Rumor Mill one year. She bred and showed two Toy breeds, but was in the process of phasing out of one so that she could concentrate on the other. When she and her husband bought some acreage, their first project was to build a kennel to house their kids. It was solidly built - a total of ten runs - completely wash-down with grooming and office areas, air conditioned and heated. At the same time they converted a room in the house into a puppy-whelping room with indoor-outdoor runs...their plans had worked out beautifully.But then - horrors - she started winning with her new breed. Unforgiveable, right First, I heard that she had seventy-five dogs and only ten runs. Well, with that many dogs and only ten runs, she must keep most of them in little crates stacked all over the house - so that was tacked on to the rumor. Then, came the news that since she had so many dogs, so few runs, and kept them all crated, the conditions were unsanitary and all her dogs had terrible rears I asked one of the purveyors of the rumor if she had ever been to the breeders house. Oh, no I wouldnt be caught dead there - Susie told me all about it Well, I happened to know the Susie in question and knew that she had never set foot on the place. But Good 01 Susie was telling anyone who would listen about the horrible conditions which existed only in her own fertile imaginationFact - my friend had ten runs in her kennel - each measuring 6 by 30 feet. Three Toy dogs shared each of those runs - the indoor portion of the run measured 6 by 4 feet. In each indoor compartment was a bench raised about 4 off the floor that was quite roomy for the occupants. Off the whelping-puppy room were four more runs - these measured 6 by 20 feet. As you can see, the only truth in the whole thing was the number of runs and that was only partially true, since the originator of the rumor didnt know about the four runs off the house.Another rumor that surfaced one year had a handler as the centerpiece Ringside, someone commented that a certain handler's dog always lifted his leg on the post at the gate of the ring. That comment was picked up and soon everyone was saying that the handler never exercised his dogs. Then another person mentioned that he thought the handler looked beat, mustnot have had much sleep the night before. Before you knew it, the handler was being touted as a person who never exercised his dogs, beat his dogs, and that he was servicing the dogs ownerI guess the configuration of the planets during that time of year must stimulate the cerebral activity of some people while at the same time depressing that part of the brain which governs the knowledge of right and wrong. This column is an obituary for these animals with the hope of increasing awareness about responsible pet ownership and the tragedy of pet overpopulation.Death was caused by a lethal injection of sodium pentabar- bitol or by a carbon monoxide chamber. Place of death was at area shelters. Reasons for death were apathy and irresponsibility of many citizens in our community.Here are some of the reasons for the deaths wanted my children to see the miracle of birth. We just wanted our dog to have one litter. wanted to breed my dog to get my money back. fs not natural to have pets spayed and neutered. People pay good money for pure breed animals. Shes not my pet, we just feed her. We dont want this dog any longer. We are moving and we cant take our pet. We cant afford our pet any longer. We didnt know we could check the shelter for our missing pet. We never keep tags on our pets. We thought if we let her go in the park, someone would find her and take her home. We always find good homes for our pets offspring - we give them away in front of the grocery store.Many people do not see the connection between their animals offspring and the fact that every day, healthy, beautiful dogs and cats must die because there are too many of them.Every litter adds to the problem of too many dogs and cats and not enough homes. Even if someone does find good homes for their pets litter, others do not have homes available to them.Many people obtain pets without considering the responsibility of pet ownership. A pet is a living, feeling, breathing creature, not a toy to be discarded when it is old or no longer convenient. Having a pet involves careful consideration, not only for the animals needs but for the problems in the community when citizens are not responsible for their animals.All of this is the bad news. The good news is that we can solve the problem. The SPCA and animal shelters cant do it alone. It is up to all citizens of the community to do their part in educating others about the benefits of spaying and neutering and the concept of responsible pet ownership. The above article appeared in Februarys Times Picayune, and the thoughts behind it are sobering indeed. Far too many purebreds are showing up at animal shelters these days. We as breeders of purebred dogs are responsible for any pet puppies we sell, and it is up to us to see that unwanted pets do not result from our stock.The one way to insure that this does not happen is to sell pets only on a spayneuter agreement. Some might ask, how can one make sure the new owners comply The answer is a good sales contract which stipulates that the new owner MUST spay or neuter his purchase. Everyone was so super wonderful to me it seemed I had actually gone to heaven. Continental cooperated in flying me to New York at a small price and the weather was perfect as we landed without incident. My roommate-to-be, Alrene Steinmetz, greeted me at the Roosevelt. With her were Christine John Heartz with their beautiful puppy still being show-trained in the hall and Jim Butler who had created a lovely corsage for me.The dinner Saturday evening, arranged by Sam Zaneoff, was memorable. Officers and Judges were introduced including myself. Peter Galindo wrote my obituary and Sam Zaneoff delivered it, both such expert promoters that the following standing ovation was the thrill of my life.The Specialty on Sunday was the biggest and most successful ever, with the beautiful judge, Mrs. Paula Hartinger, substituting for our very beloved Mr. Tipton, who was ill. Dr. Morris Carson chose the Sweepstakes winners most expertly and Dr. Samuel Draper capably evaluated Junior Showmanship. Ch. D-Nees Darin Duffie was shown in the Veteran Class, but was a popular winner for Best of Breed. There were many beautiful Pomeranians shown including some fabulous puppies.A meeting of the Video Committee was very productive and is preparing for filming to start next fall. Nothing in the video will be identified, and expenses will be entirely met by the owners. Some of the current Best in Show winners will be invited including Poms with prominent faults to be demonstrated. Problems were anticipated in securing the less-than-perfect specimens. We dont have any of those was the answer of breeders interrogated.A meeting was held after the show in which our new President, Olga Baker, was elected. Sue Goddard, our former President for the last two years was retired with honors. Then everyone enjoyed the snack bar with an abundance of delicious food prepared for the Club members. I enjoyed sitting with Joe McGinnis, Duane Doll and Victoria Powell and getting to know them better.For future tasks, such as picking up the dog runs, I will really not be here mentally, but back at the Specialty again where I was Cinderella for a day.
