You see, a member of my family has suggested that I have had a memory lapse, and that possibly Michael was not all to blame for some of the things that happened, and that maybe, just maybe, I might have had a part in the planning and execution of several episodes of mischief. All I can say in response is that I find it high time to change the subject.Sylvia Kelly has completed the move to another home and newer kennel to house her dogs. Sylvia reports that everything is going well, which means, of course, that everything is a disaster and you cant find anything because its in another box that you forgot to mark and you miss your old butcher and shopping mall and you cant find the new bank. Ive moved before you cant fool me. And you cant cook because everythings packed up, so you have to rely on junk food restaurants for substandard nutrition...which of course leads us to the subject of the month The Dreaded Drive Up Window. Now, everyone knows that I am the worlds most fervent proponent of electronic gadgets modern conveniences, but I cannot tolerate those things, and sometimes I yearn for a return to days gone by.Many made that trip at a recent cluster of dog shows, when the Central Florida Kennel Club hosted its ROCK AND ROLL FIFTIES DOG SHOW. Underwritten by Kal Kan, this affair was a gas many luminaries of the dog show world were decked out like nerds and weirdos, some of whom normally arent. Duane Doll looked like the guy everyone hated Freshman year, a real cool cat dressed to the nines. Arlene Czech dragged out her poodle skirt and bobby socks Alan Harper was dressed like a grease monkey, and the editor was just grease, period. Actually, not having been out and about in the fifties, I had no idea what to wear. I finally decided to dress like all the guys my big sisters werent allowed to date it worked. Dr. Leon Seligman won the Best Mens Costume competition Linda Goldberg did not win the Womens but she looked really rad Linda Rowell looked, well, like anybody would look with two BISA on a Pug bitch, although its hard to be sure because I dont believe its been done before there was a hula-hoop contest which was a riot the live band was super, and there was even an Elvis Impersonator who had most of the place in a frenzy I siez- ed the opportunity to catch a quick nap - I like those acts almost as much as drive-up food machines. All in all, it was great, and I think these affairs are a terrific addition to the sport of purebred dogs. Congratulations are in order to the Club, to its President Diane Albers, and to all the individuals who made it possible. And speaking of moving, and we were at one point, other Pom fanciers are settling into new abodes. Jessie Stephens has moved from Maryland to Washington state, of all places, and we wish her good luck in her new home. And of course the Ken Miller vs. Eleanor Miller split has everyone in an uproar. You see, Ken has been transferred to Ohio, and Eleanor is still here in Florida waiting for her house to sell. And with our help it wont be soon. Weve been hiding out on the corner, and when prospective buyers approach, we holler out You dont want to live on THIS street, Oh No Not this street The would-be buyers take a powder, and we get to enjoy Eleanors company longer. But although theyre apart, they still visit each other from time to time. The other day, after one of Eleanors weekend visits, one of Kens new neighbors asked Who was that lady I saw you with last night, and Ken replied, That was no lady, that was my wifeThe Pom Reader August 1988DO YOU STILL BEAT YOUR MOTHER Department...And not to be outdone, son Randy Miller is making waves. With all the moving and confusion, Randy threw his hands in the air, bought a Pom of his own, and NOW THERES ANOTHER MILLER WINNING IN THE RING. Keep up the good work, RandyAnd now, back to the subject if there was one. Of course, as far as pickup windows go, they are not exactly new. I was around when the first one opened in Schaumberg, Illinois, or wherever. Sheila and I were tooling around, acting cool in a convertible, and decided have a little fun with this new contraption. We zoomed on up, got our two large Fries and Cokes, leaned close to the microphone and screamed at the top of our lungs, See you later alligator After awhile, crocodile We burst into fits of pealing laughter, I tramped down on the gas pedal and killed the engine. And we had to sit there for fifteen minutes like two idiots, while everyone in the restaurant glared out the window at us. Making improper use of the intercom system is just not tolerated in Schaumberg, Illinois.Actually, pickup windows have been the source of three em- barrasing experiences for me that was only one. One day I was in neecf of a foot-long chili dog. These are not easy to find in my area, but I decided to try you never know what new little item they are trying to peddle to a long-suffering public. I rolled up to the menu board and began to search for a foot long chili dog. A squawky voice piped up Welcome to Le Quic Burger. May I take your order I asked for a moment to ponder the offerings, and two seconds later the voice was back, more forceful than before. Welcome to Le Quic Burger May I take your order I said I wasnt quite ready. One second later they hit on me again. WELCOME TO LE QUIC BURGER MAY I TAKE YOUR ORDER I said thanks but no thanks, I couldnt find anything on the menu that I wanted. WHAT, the voice squawked, EXCUSE ME, SIR I repeated, Thank you, but I wanted a chili dog and you dont have one, so Ill just be on my way. As I pulled past the delivery window I glanced in...there was the Voice, the Manager, the Assistant Manager, and several other people in dumb-looking uniforms glaring at me with unconcealed irritation. Loitering in the pickup lane without purchase is considered outre at Le Quic Burger. One day I was rushing home from the post office. I was also rushing to beat an impending thunderstorm, a pretty bad one from the looks of things. And yet I felt in need of a junk food fix. I roared into the Taco place and as I pulled up the rain came down. Buckets of it, complete with high gusting winds and booming thunder. I ran my window down, shouted my order, then ran the window back up. The machine said something. I ran the window back down, repeated the order, then ran it back up. The machine said something else. Gingerly, I opened the window a crack and asked it to repeat itself. This time I heard clearly and as I opened my window to shout NO I DO NOT WANT ANY FRIJOLES RESFRITOS the wind changed, and a great gush of rain hit me in the face, as if someone had thrown a bucket of water. And the most unfortunate part was that I, in surprise and irritation, bellered a most unfortunate four letter word which even more unfortunately was broadcast throughout the whole unfortunate restaurant. You should have seen the looks I received as I attempted to collect my six Burrito Supremes and Four Beefy Tostados. Shrieking profanity into the intercom is frowned upon at Taco Rapido.Enough already. Were on our way to England - well tell you about it next month. I thought it would be a good idea to fill you people in on our Canadian Pomeranian Club. I am one of the founding members and like to help out whenever possible. A lot of our membership contribute by writing articles in the newsletter, advertising, donations for special shows and volunteer work. Here is a list of our new executives for 1988PresidentGerda Hill, Chilliwack, B.C.Vice-PresidentMichelle McDonald, Halifax, N.S.SecretaryCarolynn Berry, B.C.DirectorsElizabeth Dupuis, Ontario Brian OReel, SaskatchewanAs you can see, our executives are from across Canada from East to West coast. As a Club we put out a bi-monthly newsletter in a magazine format. Members across Canada advertise to pay for the newsletters publication expenses. Because we exchange articles on breeding problems, etc., we are brought closer together. We all know each other, if not personally, in print. Also we receive news of upcoming events, and we publish a litterbasket page. I will try to keep you up to date on the Pomeranian news in Canada. Our Club is putting on its 2nd National Specialty at Confederation Park in Regina, Sask., July 9, 1988. here is a schedule of the events and the judgesJuly 8, 1988 Puppy Sweepstakes. For years now our Secretary, Til, hs tried to get them to correct this error. Well, she did it Our Standard now reads 7 Pounds and Under preferred size 4-5 lbs. for show. There are also some colour changes we will be working for in the years to come. Brindle and Black Tan are not recognized colours to date. Parti Poms are only allowed in orangewhite and blackwhite. As you see, we have our work cut out for us.If any of you have any information or comments on these articles, they would be greatly appreciated. A.K.C. has just expanded the education network to encompass representatives on the local level throughout the entire United States.Because exhibitors of various breeds have questioned judges knowledge in some of the breeds theyjudge, A.K.C. is going all out to educate judges. They encourage judges to learn more about the breed through seminars, discussion of the breed with breeders, reading books, studying the standard, video and any illustrations or interpretations of the standard that may be available. The purpose of the local E.C. will be to organize an occasional Pomeranian seminar, disseminate information to area judges and Pom fanciers, and to assist A.K.C. in their new hands-on testing of a breed for which a judge has newly applied. The local Pomeranian E.C. will contact their area Pomeranian people to have the needed Poms available for any Hands-On Testing A.K.C. may want to set up in that particular area. The only thing local E.C.s will need to do at this time is to contact these local Pom people and set up an education committee to assist them. Local clubs could contribute greatly by preparing educational materials not available from the A.P.C. As this is done, please send information updating your accomplishments.Any other Pom person willing to serve on an education committee in their area please contact me. I will publish the name of the local Education Coordinators in the next Pom magazine or when the organizations of E.C.s is complete. I thank everyone in advance for the effort put forth in the education of our breed to the many interested people. The listing of books available on the Pomeranian is completed. If there are any that I have not included, please send this information to me. I will add them to the list.Books available at the American Kennel Club Library, 51 Madison Avenue, New York, New York 10010 Denlinger, Milo Grange. The Complete Pomeranian. For sometime now, OLYMP1ALAND has been home to an Eighth Wonder of the world. Let me tell you her story.I have changed the names to protect the innocent I will call her Flora her real name translated meant the showy flourish at the end of an aria. Flora is showy, she is also spunky, and to most observers, happy. On the outside she is happy, but something on the inside sure must be unhappy. But I dont know if we will ever know what.Flora was born of good parents, non-related but whose pedigrees were similar and should have been compatible. Flora progressed just like any other potential show Pom, and at the age of nine months was super heavy coated, trained and thought to be ready for the ring. Then she came into season. Nothing remarkable about this season, but shortly afterward Flora began to have sporadic, brief stagger fits. She would look at you as if she had just imbibed four martinis and the olives, keel over and before you could rush to her aid she was on her feet, wobbly but alert and smiling. No caloric supplement ever reached her fast enough to aid in her recovery, and none administered on a routine basis prevented the staggers, so a sugar kid was ruled out. Neither did Flora arrive quickly enough to the veterinarians for one of her staggers to be witnessed by a professional. And after several thorough exams and many tests the vet finally looked at Floras owner with a questioning eye. Uhh, he said, maybe you are overworked or something. Theres nothing wrong with the dog. Shes healthy as a horseSo It was Floras owner that was the neurotic, not the dog This Floras owner might have believed had she not had one withering eye on her checkbook, plus being in possession of the knowledge that vets blessed though they be have an uncanny way of separating ones checks from their book. But AHA] the vet could not deny the bloom of pink patches where the lionesss undermane used to be. Flora lost her undermane and her bib was not a gorgeous shade of peony pink For the moment, however, the martini staggers ceased. Skin scrapings, medicinal baths were taken, no cause surfaced and no medication helped. Flora was, over a period of time, checked for Heart problems, diabetes, epilepsy, under-or over-active thyroid, improperly acting kidneys, liver trouble, adrenalin, hormonal imbalance, and glucose difficulty. She was pronounced healthy as a horse. After a while Floras pink patches faded, her coat grew in and she was again entered in upcoming shows. The day after entries closed Floras skin was normal but her guard hairs began to fall out The undercoat remained firm, but only a few scraggly weeds straggled from what had once been a beautiful garden. The coatless wonder, Floras owner dubbed her, but Floras owner wasnt laughing. The show dates passed, Flora stayed home, eating well and playing merrily. Then, in a few months, the pink patches came back on the chest, and the staggers began again at the same time. Sometimes she staggered once a week, sometimes but once a month, and none of the fits lasted more than a minute from onset to end. But the strange thing was Flora never chose to get drunk outside her home environment. A closet alcoholic, do you think A trip to the vets, or to visit friends, or three hours on a long distance car ride...no staggers. But Floras owner was certain that Flora wasnt drinking at home, eitherFlora was taken round to visit several different vets. Nothing was found, but one vet, a specialist in the reproduction field, sug\t3c3T TrWgested Flora be bred. BE BRED Well, it was a thought dear to her owners heart, but under these auspices But Flora was bred, her owner promising Flora that no resultant pups would be sold. Flora didnt seem to mind. Rather, she flourished like the proverbial green bay tree. Her coat came in by the bushel lot. She was bouncy, pleased with herself and sober. No staggers. But then there were no puppies, either. No puppies, but there is always showtime and Flora was once more in great coat. When Floras owners husband came in from the kennel quarters one afternoon after entries had closed shouting THAR SHE BLOWS, Floras owner knew he wasnt talking about Moby Dick. This time Flora was taken, checkbook in hand, to the College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville, Florida. Flora was quite a sensation up there. She spent two nights and three days on what turned out to be a happy holiday for her. The vets there even assigned a special assistant, a very pretty young lady, to sit up nights with Flora, watching TV, to catch Flora sneakin a drink and gettin drunk. Flora passed herself off as a teetotaler and as well managed to convince the vets in Gainesville that her owner was the nutBut the pink patches are there..., Floras owner cried. They smiled at her in Gainesville. Then seeing Floras owners temperature rise, they suggested a flea allergy. FLEAS You know, one itsy-bitsy flea and the antihistamines go crazy and little pustules raise up all over. Ok, Ok. So Flora went happily home and was flea- combed daily. If they jumped on they jumped off again just as quickly. Six months passed, Flora had one stagger fit, her coat again returned to normal, and upon consultation with the dogs in Gainesville Flora was once more bred. Ovulation smears were taken daily, the male was checked, the breedings were excellent, and the samples of Floras blood and smear specimens were sent off to Gainesville. Flora flourished as before. But there were no puppies. Three months later Flora had peony pink patches all over her chest and three stagger fits in one week. One final experiment remained to be done. An exploratory operation was suggested, and after much soul-searching by Floras owner it was done. The only thing the surgeon found unusual in Flora was that her reproductive organs were no bigger than a cats But then the surgeon said that he had never seen the reproductive organs of a five pound Pom unless he were sectioning and the organs were swollen by pregnancy. So Dont ask me Im only telling the story. But to shorten it Flora remained in OLYMPIALAND until she was five and a half years old. There were good times and bad. Stages of heavy coatedness, normal seasons no more matings, then the staggers and the pinkies. At four years of age the pinkies finally left for good, but the staggers became more frequent and of longer duration. The local vet finally got to witness one of a half-hour duration. After these, Flora would get to her feet, wag her tail, look a little tipsey- eyed and then bounce back to play.A beginning, a middle, and an end, Aristotle taught, is to every story a necessity. The end has come for Flora today. Flora is leaving OLYMPIALAND to go to a very special home with a very special lady who is the wife of a very special veterinarian who is going to very specially spay Flora and keep her as long as she lives, on the wagon or off. But OLYMPIA and her operator, Floras owner, are always going to be wondering whatever made Flora a worlds wonder. Do you knowThe Pom Reader August 1988...til the dog howls again OLYMPIA.21PRECIOUS PETITES GABRIELLAix assaSpecial thanks to Claudia Pfeffer, BreederOwner Precious Petites, for letting me have Gabby.
