You see, as the child was due in July, I intelligently and quite reasonably started phoning every thirteen minutes from April seventeenth on. For the first number of weeks my calls were met with some enthusiasm, but after a while I sensed a change in tone. 930 P.M. I remained steadfast for four days, then I could no longer stand it. This called for a little subterfuge. 630 P.M. Hello Pat Hi I just wondered... But I always get excited about anything new, especially an impending birth.Speaking of new, I am pleased to welcome Susan Johnson and her artistic talents to The Pom Reader. From the looks of things its going to be a stellar year - best of luck to allBut back to the subject - as Ive said,I finally decided that I was overdoing it a little, and tried to calm down about the new baby. But it didnt last.On July 13th Friday at 839 A.M. Peoria, Illinois time, I got a call. It was my brother. Joe - guess what I played it cool. Well, hello, Chuck, whats new We had a baby girl, were going to call her Julie... I lost what cool I had. WITHOUT ME HOW DID YOU DO IT HAS SHE SAID ANYTHING YET LIKE POMERANIAN...OR UNCLE JOE.Unfortunately, having just been born, the baby couldnt come to the phone. I was in a frenzy - there are so many things I want to tell her, so many things to say. I guess Ill just be forced to wait until she learns to read. Probably next month. So, welcome to this world, Little One. Oh, the things you will do, the wonders that await you, the things you will learn. And the things that you will see. Not all of them will be good, but your parents will have given you the wherewithal to take it all in stride. May you grow up in the bubble of security and love that is tradition on both sides of your pedigree. May you be as respected and loved as your four grandparents. May you be as loving and caring as your parents. May you be an individual worthy of lifes best, like your aunts and uncles. After all, everyone knows how, when, and against what diseases to vaccinate their dogs. Right A good number of this magazines readers are experienced breeders who have been giving their own vaccines for years. Other readers include newcomers to the dog world or people who own one or two dogs. Those dogs, lucky little devils that they are, most likely go to the veterinarian every year for booster shots, and their veterinarians surely know what they are doing. RightOn second thought, I decided a column about vaccines could be interesting. Medical science, being what it is, changes about every three seconds. There are a few new vaccines on the market. There are a few new diseases. There are some new thoughts being discussed concerning old vaccines and old diseases. So...I have done some digging and have found some information which I think is useful. I hope you think so, too.Routine VaccinationsThose of you who know all about routine vaccinations can feel free to skip to the next section. I promise I wont be insulted. Youre still reading Gee, Im flattered. Every puppy needs to be vaccinated against a few common diseases. Diseases like infectious canine hepatitis, distemper, and parvovirus used to kill dogs by the thousands. Now, thanks to the availability and affordability of safe and effective vaccines, these diseases are seen much less frequently. However, we still see these diseases. In fact, we see diseases all the time. It is still, and will probably always be, extremely important that vaccinations be given and kept up to date. When puppies are born their immunity against diseases is provided by antibodies immunoglobulins acquired from the mothers milk. These antibodies last for a number of weeks while the puppys immune system is developing to the point where the puppy can produce its own antibodies against disease. Vaccines are usually composed of deactivated modified live vaccine or killed viruses or virus particles which, when injected into an animal, will cause the body to mount an immune response to the virus. This immune response will be long-lasting and will protect the animal in the event of a challenge to the body by a live virus. There are also vaccines against bacterial diseases which work in similar ways. The usual combination shot given to puppies subcutaneously includes immunization against canine distemper, canine adenovirus 2 the cause of infectious hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, and leptospirosis this series is referred to as DA2PPL, DHLPP, DA2PL-P, etc., etc., depending upon the manufacturer it allThe Pom Reader August 1990means the same thing. Modified-live vaccines are very effective and safe and are available from a number of different manufacturers I use Vanguard made by Norden. The first shot should be given at 6-8 weeks of age. Subsequent shots are given at 10-12 weeks of age and at 14-16 weeks of age, and then yearly for the duration of the dogs life. The other important routine vaccination is against rabies. A killed vaccine should be used, and dogs should be vaccinated initially at 3 months of age. Subsequent vaccinations should be given a year later and then every 2 or 3 years, depending on the vaccine used. I cannot over-emphasize the importance of this vaccine. Rabies is a very real threat to human and to animal health. There is currently a serious epidemic of rabies in the raccoon population in much of the Eastern United States. I am vaccinated against rabies myself. The shot must be given intramuscularly in dogs. Fortunately for me, it is given intradermally in humans. I didnt scream too loud.ParvovirusParvovirus infection is a serious killer of dogs. Last summer while I was at the Animal Medical Center in New York City I saw cases of parvo every week. It was very sad, especially since the disease is very easy to prevent. Recently, a new, particularly nasty strain of parvovirus has been isolated which seems to be able to infect dogs that have been vaccinated with the usual parvo vaccines. The strain is called KF-11, and there is a new KF-11 vaccine available. The vaccine is made by Fort Dodge, and, as far as I know, it is safe. However, not everyone is convinced of its effectiveness. I believe there are some dogs that are very susceptible toparvovirus infection regardless of their vaccination status, and that has nothing to do with the KF-11 strain. For instance, I have seen a number of Rottweilers over the years who have developed parvovirus disease even though they have been well-vaccinated. Most of these dogs died, and it gave me the impression that Rottweilers might somehow be more at risk for parvo infection than other breeds. I have no scientific evidence to prove that. Its just an impression. I could be wrong. [Ed. note - according to long-time breeders, youre not. They say that the Rottweiler has a surprisingly fragile immune system for its size and physical strength. J] Anyway, the point is that I dont feel comfortable telling you to run out and vaccinate all your dogs with the KF-11 vaccine. There is not enough information yet to make a strong recommendation. On the other hand, if your area is having a problem with parvo, even in vaccinated dogs, and your veterinarian thinks your dog needs a KF-11 shot, I dont think it is contraindicated.I have one other comment concerning parvo. A few years back there was a general recommendation to give parvo vaccines separately from the other routine vaccinations rather than combined in one shot. There were apparently some problems with the other vaccines interfering with the parvo immunization. However, the problems with the combination vaccines no longer seem to exist. I spoke with a leading expert on parvovirus and parvo vaccines concerning this topic. He advised me that the most recent information indicates that it is perfectly alright to give parvo vaccines in combination with the others.Continued next pageTom Graves on Vaccines continued... Lyme DiseaseIf you happen to live in an endemic area for Lyme Disease, you have probably heard that a vaccine is now available for use in dogs. The vaccine is manufactured by Fort Dodge, and many of the veterinarians in my area are recommending that their clients dogs be vaccinated. Here are a few things I have found out1. The vaccine is probably safe if used on dogs that have not been exposed to the organism that causes Lyme Disease.2. It might be unsafe if given to a dog which has already been exposed to Lyme Disease. For this reason a Lyme Disease test should be done before the vaccine is given. The test can be expensive.3. It is questionable whether the vaccine is effective. It was tested on a very small number of dogs and the results of Fort Dodges research have not, in my opinion, come under adequate scientific scrutiny. Cornell has not been able to see the data.4. The vaccine will interfere with the current methods of testing for Lyme Disease. In other words, if you give the vaccine and the dog subsequently develops the disease, you will have no way of confirming the diagnosis. For the reasons I have stated above, I do not recommend the Lyme Disease vaccine. In fact, the veterinary hospital at Cornell refuses to administer the vaccine to its patients. I suspect quite a few veterinarians will make a few extra dollars selling this vaccine not necessarily because the veterinarians are dishonest, but because Fort Dodge will push the vaccine strongly and dog owners will demand it. I dont know exactly what the vaccine costs, but you can bet it will be expensive.CoronavirusHeres another fairly recent vaccine. Coronavirus infections are quite common among dogs especially dogs traveling to dog shows. However, there are many strains of coronavirus and this vaccine probably wont protect against all of them. In addition, the immunity provided by the coronavirus vaccine currently available is short-lived, probably lasting only a few months. The vaccine is safe its a killed vaccine, and there is nothing wrong with giving it, especially if you plan on attending a lot of dog shows. If youre going to give it, however, you should give it at least three times a year. I do not give this vaccine to my own dogs, but I see nothing wrong with it.LeptospirosisAt one time, leptospirosis was a common and serious killer of dogs. Since the development of a vaccine, the disease has been seen much less commonly. Recently, however, there has been an alarming increase in the number of new cases of leptospirosis. The disease is believed to be transmitted to dogs from the raccoon population. Leptospirosis is also a serious health threat to livestock and to humans. The leptospirosis vaccine is very safe and effective and provides very good protection against the disease. Theres just one problem The vaccine is traditionally given once a year along with the other routine vaccinations. Unfortunately, researchers have discovered that immunity provided by the vaccine may only last six months in some dogs. If your dog gets a lepto vaccine once a year, he may be spending as much as half of the year unprotected from this killer disease There are many raccoons in my neighborhood. Dogs dont need direct contact with a sick raccoon to become infected with leptospirosis. The disease is transmitted through urine. Bottom line I vaccinate my dogs against leptospirosis every six months. The vaccine is very inexpensive.Bordetella bronchisepticaBordetella bronchiseptica is one of the organisms responsible for kennel cough in dogs. Bordetella vaccination alone will probably not protect the majority of dogs against development of the disease. However, in combination with the other routine vaccinations, a bordetella vaccine will probably provide protection against kennel cough up to 80 or 90 percent of the time. In other words, giving the vaccine is no guarantee that your dog will not get kennel cough, but it helps. The vaccine is most effective when given in- tranasally. The vaccine is actually squirted up the dogs nose with a little aerosolizer that comes with the vaccine. Its not hard to use. It is affordable. I think it is a good idea to vaccinate your dogs, especially if they are exposed to crowded conditions with other dogs boarding kennel, dog shows, etc..Vaccinating Your Own DogsIf you have a large breeding kennel, you probably vaccinate your own dogs. Taking 20 or more dogs to the veterinarians office for shots every year would be extremely expensive and difficult to manage. If, on the other hand, you have a small number of dogs, you should take your dogs to the vet for routine vaccinationss. When you take a dog for shots you get more than just a vaccine. Your dog gets a general health examination. You would not believe how many serious diseases are discovered when a dog comes in for routine vaccinations. Owners sometimes fail to notice progressive health problems in their dogs.If you are vaccinating your own dogs, make sure you do it right. Pay attention to the route of administration. Always give the entire dose of a vaccine, now matter howsmall the dog. Never use needles and syringes more than once.Vaccine ReactionsRarely a vaccination will cause an adverse reaction. These reactions range from a sore spot or an abscess at the injection site, to hives, or even to an anaphylactic reaction or possible death. I had a little bitch whose face began to swell about ten minutes after I had given her a vaccine This is called angioneurotic edema. She was treated immediately with intravenous epinephrine and was given steroids and she was fine a few hours later, but she could have died if the swelling had affected her breathing passages. Vaccine reactions dont occur very often, but they can be serious. If you have a vaccine reaction, get your dog to the veterinarian immediately. That dog should not be vaccinated subsequently without the supervision of a veterinarian. I hope some of this information will be useful to you. If you have any questions, ask your veterinarian. Of course, you can always feel free to ask me. I really like hearing from readers. And speaking of readers, one Peke breederexhibitor wrote last month to complain that my usage of the Latin plural for fetus was in error. This struck me to my guilt-ridden Catholic core. All I can say is, Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa. See you next month.Tom GravesTom Graves is a veterinary student at Cornell University and has twice been awarded the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Veterinary Scholarship. TIM SUES HIGH LIGHTSThe Pom Reader August 1990FROM OUR READERSDear Joe,Enclosed is my ad for August. Sorry its running close, we just got pictures from Alaska. Were waiting for a picture from a Maryland show to forward for September.I want to thank you for the way you handled my July ad and particularly Oreos name. Theyre always good but this one was particularly pleasing. Also, a special thank you for the many times youve gone out of your way to go that extra mile with us so that our exciting news can be published right away.SincerelyDot Martin, LA CHERIE POMSYork, South Carolina Dot Thanks for the letter. Continued success with your dogs and give my best to Ed.JMcG Dear Joe,Please make the necessary correction in the continuing ad running in the Reader. I have all of a sudden received mail from several weeks ago. You know how some neighbors can be holding anothers mail. Probably thought the big million dollars would be coming in and they would hold out for the big green stuff. All they got was inquiries for puppies, and questions for Shu-Shu I am sure they have thought by now this entire world has gone to the dogs in learning that people are actually writing to Shu-Shu and expecting a DOG to write back This will have to go into the column. Now, hearing from me wont mean anything other than I have been under the weather a bit. I am going in for major surgery within the next couple of weeks and will be out of commission for several weeks. Hopefully with being home and all, I will be able to recover with pen in hand and keep the column going. Thanks,Shannon Johnson, DOO-SHAY POMSWarrenville, South Carolina Shannon Surgery Yeah, right. Some writers will do ANYTHING to avoid a deadline.Seriously, heres wishing you a speedy recovery and tell Shu-Shu we miss her Hurry back.JMcG HiEnclosed is the layout and picture Id like used on my next ad. I thought you did a great job on my very first ad in the June issue and feel confident you will do as well on this one. This time I feel I have a particularly nice picture of Sasha that would look spectacular on a black background. So, if its possible, would you reverse your normal black white printing Im very new at this and just hope you understand what Im talking about. If not - please use your own judgement. Thanks for the great job youre doing. Right now this is the only Pom publication I feel I would trust with my ad.Vicki Clendenin, CINNABAR POMSPoint Pleasant, West Virginia Vicki Youre right, the pictures gorgous and I heartily agree with your decision to reverse out the ad.READERS Never hesitate to tell me how you want your ads to look. We designated temporary club officers who were voted to continue in their positions at our May meeting President, Virginia Noth, Vice President Linda Harris Treasurer, Pat Phillips, RecordingCorresponding Secretary Janice Young. Janine Pannell volunteered to be in charge of educational programs. We hope to help people new to the breed learn how to properly groom and train their Poms and perhaps the rest of us can learn something as well. Our first Fun Match will be an All Toy Breed Match August 19th, to be held in an air-conditioned building, thanks, Virginia President.Club members who have finished Poms to their championships recently are Carl Florence Scott with Jolly Wee Music of Tim Sue, male, and Tim Sues Hi Times, male Linda Harris, Benjis Punk Rock Tradition, male Janice Young, Stylestep- per of Oakridge, male. Brenda Segelken finished a male at the Sedalia shows but unfortunately I dont have his name. This area has seen tremendous growth in show entries for Poms. Five years ago the average entry was 2 to 5 Poms, sometimes more at the spring shows'when Poms are in full coat. Now it isnt unusual to have 25 to 30 Poms entered. By the way, Brendas dog is named Fame Great Expectations see New Champions in this issue. And we all have Great Expectations for your Club JMcG Dear Joe,Sally Baugniets article in April 90 and her Letter in July was a real eye-opener to me. I had neverthought of animal rights activists getting fanatic enough to actually threaten to remove our dogs from their secure and cozy crates at dog shows Now it is not just poison or dognapping we have to fear at shows It recently came to my attention that fanatical activists are joining local kennel clubs using their affiliation membership as part of their public resume and at the same time spying on breeder members of the clubs. Can you imagine inviting a fellow KC members over for tea and cookies to discuss dogs and finding out your guest is actually compiling a docier on you If the extremist activists think confinement in crates at shows is cruei, what must they think of a breeder who must often kennel or otherwise confine their dogs to prevent accidental injuries What about mother dogs in their whelping pensSeveral months back I received a calll from a local KC member, who I did not know, and the calling party informed me that they were a member of the KCs committee for purebred dog rescue they had just reviewed a humane shelter and found a real pretty, 5 pound red Pomeranian who needed to be rescued. I had been selected as the rescuing party. I immediately phoned the shelter as I knew an officer there there was a Pom in residence, a victim of abuse whose abuser was being vigorously pursued through court action the Pom was in excellent health but was more like 12 pounds than 5, but that aside, the Pom could not be rescued - er, adopted - until the court proceedings were finished and there were several adoptive families being investigated for an eventual good home. I was also informed that the kennel club in question , of which this humane shelter officer was a board member, had no committee for purebred dog rescue, per se, and on the other hand if these extremists are really for animal rights why just purebred dog rescue What about the hundreds of mixed breeds that come into the shelters daily It would seem that breeders of purebred dogs are an easier target than mongrel owners. When the extremists join kennel clubs or attend shows they know who we are and where we are The evening following the morning of the rescue phone call I received a second call, from another member of the committee to rescue purebred dogs who asked me sharply if I had done my duty. I informed them of what I had learned. I was told that I had let the humane shelter pull the wool over my eyes What gets me is that I am not a member of that kennel club and do not advertise my Poms in any newspapers, etc., and how did this person get my name When I asked this question of a local KC member I was told, probably because you, as a show breeder, are on the KCs list when people inquire about Poms and are being steered away from pet shops. You see, if they join kennel clubs or attend shows they have access to your name and address. No one can ever know these days when some fanatic will show up at your door charging you with cruelty for confining your dogs.Lois Ciliberto, CRESCENDO POMSLand OLakes, Florida Lois I have my own committee for greeting uninvited visitors one is a Doberman, the other is a Rottweiler. Probably neither of which would ever bite anyone, but they look impressive. Keep up your rescue efforts, and house your dogs as you see fit. Its none of their business, anyway.JMcGThe Pom Reader August 1990Another first...for LA CHERIEOur First CANADIAN CHAMPION-Dorothy F.
