And that is hawking Christmas gift ideas prior to Thanksgiving. But it pays to think ahead, and several items I noticed recently may be welcome additions to your Santas list. Most of us never tire of reading about Pomeranians, and an excellent source of entertainment and information is older and out-of-print books. Kathleen Rais Co. of Philadelphia, is offering several items of interest to the Pom enthusiast.315. Ives, Lilia. Show Pomeranians. Manchester Our Dogs, [1926]. 3rd ed. revised. 71 pp. Illus. AID KIT for the Pet PatientThree Bees, a veterinary management and marketing firm, has announced the development of a brand new concept in home pet health care. The PETS VET PAK offers every dog owner the peace of mind that comes with knowing he can confidently helphis pet through a minor illness or a full medical emergency. The PETS VET PAK was developed by Dr. Don Blake. As a third generation veterinarian, with thirty-six years of practice himself, Dr. Blake saw animal medicine emerge from the woods as he helped his grandfather gather herbs and roots to make elixir, and move into the modern-day hospital and pharmacy. In the guide booklet, THE PET PATIENT, easy reading and line illustrations render a quick impression of restraint, bandaging and transport procedures that can make a difference in the outcome of an accident or urgent medical crisis. Dr. Blake also covers routine conditions such as vomiting, diarrhea, insect bites, or even a skunk encounter, and explains in laymans terms how the pet owner can help his best friend at home, when its time to see the vet, and what to do until a sick or injured pet can receive professional attention.Besides basic first aid bandaging supplies, the PETS VET PAK contains professional stainless steel veterinary scissors and splinter tweezers, pen light, cold compress, oral syringe, thermometer in case, large 5 oz. of medicated spray, and some unusual items such as a nylon leash, pet health record, and fire and rescue window sticker. The entire kit is housed in a rugged, insulated, nylon tote bag ready to travel camping, hunting, fishing, dog shows and working trials, or to hang on a wall at home with the familys earthquake preparedness supplies, or as an ideal gift for thepet person. In view of the ever-increasing costs for veterinary services, the PETS VET PAK could well pay for itself with the first or second use. A handy re-order form allows the consumer to purchase any single component and maintain his own PETS VET PAK for years. The PETS VET PAK is available with a full money-back guarantee send check or money order to Three Bees, 19537 Shasta, P.O. Box 2515, Apple Valley, CA 92307. Shipping and handling included. California residents add 2.19 sales tax.On another note, there is good news for all breeders of dogs. International Canine Genetics, Inc., has announced a new canine pregnancy testing service, the only one of its kind available for dogs in the United States. The procedure requires that a blood sample be taken between days 28 and 37 from the last breeding. The attending veterinarian submits the blood sample for analysis. Accuracy level of the test is 95 based on clinical trials one year of initial use in the U.K. has also given successful results.ICG also offers the first veterinarian-clinic, canine ovulation timing test. Over the past 16 months, the test has solved innumerable timing problems for breeders who were breeding their dogs too early or too late, based on reading smears alone or just trusting nature.International Canine Genetics, Inc., is a research based company focusing on canine reproduction. In addition to the first pregnancy test for dogs, ICG introduced the first inclinic ovulation timing test for dogs and DNA paternity testing. Finally, ICG offers longdistance breeding services using fresh chilled semen or frozen semen through a network of trained veterinarians. For further information, contact International Canine Genetics, Inc., 271 Great Valley Parkway, Malvern, PA 19355. Telephone 800 248-8099.Canine Training Systems, Ltd., of Colorado has announced the production of two new broadcast quality videotapes entitled Dog Tricks I II, designed to delight a large and diverse audience. Popularity of dog training is growing at an unprecedented rate, and any dog lover will benefit from the professional instruction and high level entertainment in these tapes. The producers feel that in addition to its uncompromising quality, the tapes humor and lightheared approach to dog training will delight the youngest as well as the oldest dog lover and be useful to the novice as well as the experienced dog trainer. For further information, contact Canine Training Systems Ltd., 7550 W. I had planned on going to the Astrohall for my yearly August visit but had been gone too much previously. My able kennel manager my son, Cody, needed a rest and was very busy farming. I did not receive a catalog from the Houston Pom Club so no results are forthcoming. Also, no marked catalog was received from the Washington Pom Club. Sorry, folks, but cant report what I dont know aboutI left home on August 18th intending to attend the St. Louis Pom Clubs Toy fun match on Sunday the 19th. Unfortunately, I plugged my motor home into a friends outlet with too light a cord and caused a generator malfunction. By the time we moved all the dogs into her house it was too late to start for the fun match. I heard that it was a huge success with lovely facilities, concessions and many trophies and prizes. They are planning another one in 1991. A to-be-watched- for Miniature Pinscher took Best in Match with a Shih Tzu going Best of Opposite - I think They did have a large supported entry by the Pomeranian fanciers in the area.I did have my motor home at the Onan dealer by 800 a.m. Monday morning where they were most helpful. It appeared at that time a new part was needed which had to be ordered. I had to be in Cleveland, Ohio, the next day. So, I took the motor home back and repacked dogs, etc., and left late afternoon for Ohio. I arrived about 400 a.m. at the hotel parking lot after driving in pouring rain. I slept a few hours, exercised dogs, etc., and went into the hotel for the American Maltese Associations 25th National Specialty and Sweepstakes. It was all worth the effort. I have always loved the breed if I just thought I could keep up with the coat. It only made me appreciate more the ease of coat care that our spunky little Pomeranians require Beverly Lehnig did the regular classes and some non-regular the next day with overload classes going to John Lusk of Canada. Then I loaded up again and went out to the ample but muddy show grounds of Rid- dlefield near Ravenna, Ohio, or thereabouts I did watch Poms as well as several other breeds on Thursday and Saturday. A dog thatThe Pom Reader September 1990took my eye was Silverwoods May Day Tomho bred by Bess Roberts, owned by breeder and Tommi Hooban - another super nice male sired by Ch. Tomho Apricot Strut. The entry was nice overall with several very nice Specials that are doing their share of winning. If my information is correct - Silver- woods May Day Tomho acquired a new owner and will be headed out of the country shortly. Both Clint Harris and E. Ruth Terry did a nice job of judging and their placements were very similar. Slightly different entry one day and one dog had slight problem in work off in BOB class.I had requested help from above with cooler weather and someone cooperated except for the Saturday show. I always go prepared for anything - which is why I love the convenience of the motor home. I took along several blue ice - refreezeable ice packs in the freezer compartment. I did have some young puppies that are particular about temperature. I put a blue ice pack inside a zip-lock bag and placed it in the crate. They would crawl up on it and put paws and head on it until cool, and then roll over and lay with their back to the ice. They didnt really care if their mother was there but objected if I didnt replace their ice packs upon request It will work the same way with ice placed in zip-lock bags with a second bag over the ice bag for security in case the ice bag comes open.Friday was the Italian Greyhound Club of America National Specialty. They had a Judges Study Group on the previous night which was very well presented with ample time for a question-and-answer session. I watched from 800 a.m. until 500 Friday establishing in my mind what the Standard desires. I find it so interesting and helpful even to my own breeds to study other breeds and breed standards. You will come across information or a resource person who has the ability to make the lightbulb come on regarding a particular finer point of the standard. Do take the time to study other breeds as it will only help you in your understanding of conformation, movement and breed type. One other point I wish every breeder would make the effort to learn The next time you go to your veterinarian have him or her showyou how to check stifles. There are different ways for it to be done. If you dont understand or feel the same thing they find - keep trying. Have them explain to you medial and lateral luxation and also hyperextension of the hocks. If they dont know - go to another veterinarian. Just because a dog has straight legs and correct movement does not mean the stifles are excellent. I recommend The Genetics of the Dog by Malcolm Willis for bedside reading. One table shows Relative Risk for patellar luxation by sex, size and breed. Unfortunately, the Pomeranian led the 16 breeds included. Out of 37 cases seen the Pomeranian had a relative risk of 8.1 Values above 1 are above average risk and below 1 are less than average risk. Right behind Poms were Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas and Poodles Miniature and Toy and so on down the line. There are various schools of thought as to whether it is simple autosomal recessive or polygenic as to mode of inheritance. I think from a breeders experience, I feel it is polygenic in inheritance. Also, those dogs of small adult weight up to 9kg - 1 kg 2.2 lbs. have a relative risk of 6.6. DONT throw the baby dog out with the bath water - but be aware if a problem is there.Hopefully will be able to attend the Dallas-Ft. Worth Pomeranian Specialty later in September and have the results for next month. Until then, just keep doggin along.Janice Luginsland Rt. 1 Box 97, Americus, KS 668354 NcVOrbXcl...Girls Girls GirlsA Showcase of FemalesSpecial Ad RatesFull Page Color 275 Full Page bw 90Half Page bw 49DEADLINE October 151Make checks payable to Doll-McGinnis Publications, 8848 Beverly Hills, Lakeland, FL 33809. As most all serious Pomeranians fanciers are, in one way or another, involved in campaigning their Poms for AKC Championship points, we feel that it is important to keep tabs on this area. The procedures for tallying the point scale are as follows Exhibitors are credited with all AKC Championship points won in the calendar year, as published in the AKC Show, Obedience, and Field Trials Awards Book. Only this publications will be used for point credit. Many times the actual show dates will varyfrom the date of publication i.e., a September show may not be published until November. Tel 803 663-0210The Pom Reader September 199022OLYMPIADOGS HOWL AND...KENNEL COUGH IS......very confusing Did you know that there are 13 upper respiratory viruses and bacteria that can cause upper respiratory distress and that only 3 of the 13 can be protected against by vaccines"ITV'S322That is scary We can protect against Parainfluenza, Bordetella and Adenovirus Type 2. Parainfluenza and Adenovirus 2 are in our distemper shots and Bordetella is given separately, the best method by nasal injection via Intra Trac II. And this last is not so difficult to give as rumor had led me to believe. They furnish a yellow rubber nostril injector to tip on the syringe after mixing but we found that by placing the mixed vaccine in a very fine tuberculine syringe and leaving off the rubber tip we managed to get it into the nostril without a fuss and with very little of the vaccine being snorted back out. It seemed to us that the dogs disliked the rubber tip and that when we plunged the syringe into the nose the dogs struggled. Maybe the looks of the rubber tip did it, but when we removed the tip and went to a finer size syringe itworked like a charm. I was advised by 2 vets that although some of the vaccine is lost in application it doesnt matter as the dosage covers some loss and also that immunity is reached 24-48 hours after injection as the vaccine hits the blood vessels in the nostril, entering the blood stream instantly and thereby getting into throat and lungs faster than the shot method does. The vaccine says it is safe for 4-week-old pups and some advertisers say it is safe for those 2 weeks of age but 3 different vets advise me that it is wasted on any pups who are nursing as their immunity from dam prevents the vaccine taking effect. Why am I on this subject We all know about kennel cough, dont we Do we I am not so sure I do after having the following related to meI hope you can word this to make it sound okay and also to put the sequences in order.I have been breeding and showing for over twenty years and never had any kind of a disease problem in my dogs. I took the usual methods of vaccination and was careful to keep contact with other dogs at the shows to a minimum. I did not, however, use Bordetella vaccine and I had never heard of a case of it in my area or from any show friends. Plus I dreaded the nasal injection method. I also did not believe in injecting 6-week-old puppies with vaccines of any kind, preferring to wait until they had been weaned and reached at least 8 weeks of age, but I always maintained them separately and never allowed anyone near them until they were 4 months of age and all shots had been given. I guess, too, I was a little smug. After all, twenty-some years and never any sickness in my dogs. Complacency must have led me to be a little too relaxed.Somewhere along the line my dogs became infected with an upper respiratory virus of undetermined cause and this was quickly followed by Parvo infection. It all began in June. I had not attended a show in two months. I had a 4-week-old pup and a 2-week-old pup and three pregnant dams. The Pom Reader September 1990One of my six-month-old males began coughing. I figured it was because he had been out rather late in the kennel yard on a foggy evening. But the cough deepened into spasms within 6 hours. Rushed to the vet he was diagnosed with tracheobronchitis...kennel cough. He was given Torbutrol injectable for the immediate coughing spasms he was experiencing to prevent possible tracheal collapse and given an antibiotic shot and Clavamox pills of 62.5 mg, given twice daily to a 5 pound dog. I was also given Torbutrol injectable for the spasm times 12-cc every 6 hours if necesary but once daily seemed to control the spasm espisodes. Within 5 days this male was no longer coughing. I held my breath, knowing how contagious the thing could be and also wondering where I had gotten it. Then I remembered that new male that I had bought who developed a minor cough three days after coming in but who had been diagnosed as being free of upper respiratory infection but coughing due to retained baby teeth yet this male was also put on Clavamox for two weeks prior to his teeth removal to remove any gun inflammation. This male stopped coughing after 1 week on Clavamox and then due to my discovery that his spermcount was very low and his stifles were poor I sold him as a pet and the new owners had his teeth removed. Did I get kennel cough from him Did my vet mis-diagnose I dont know. The six-month-old male stopped coughing, as I said, and then as I held my breath 3 weeks passed with-no problems. In the meantime I gave Intra Trac II to everyone but nursing pups, and my 3 pregnant dams whelped, all within 10 days.At this point I became complacent again and thought I had gotten lucky and the kennel cough was not going to spread through all my dogs. Wrong Another young male began sniffling, not coughing. He was diagnosed as having a sinus infection, perhaps due to allergy and was put on Keflex drops, .25mg twice daily. He sniffled just like a human head cold for 7 days and stopped. Immediately a dam with the oldest pup now 7Va weeks began sniffling, followed by her pup coughing and two of the dams with 2-week-old pups began - one to sniffle and cough, the other just to sniffle. The vet prescribed Clavamox pills for all adults, even nursing dams, and Clavamox drops - .25mg twice daily to pups of any age...and every dog in the place, no matter if they had or were clear of symptoms, went on this broad spec- Continu'ed next page23ONEOAKS POMERANIANS PRESENTSGEMARA KS PARTI SHOW OFFMoonshine Clown, BlkWhitePombredens Lamb of God Parti, BlkWhite Moonshine Eclipse, Black Gold Star Miles, Gold WhitePombredens Jericho Party Boy, ChocWhite Ormans Choc Dots - Parti Girl, ChocWhite Ormans Lovely Black Lady, Black Tobbie Boy, Black Sir Winston XIV, Wolf SableLittle Bits of Honey, Cream Beth of Gold, Red White Tobbie Boy, Black Princess of Roguefly, Pom Puffins, CreamShow Off is the sire of Gemara Ks Parti Topper, pictured in The Pom Reader April 1989, page 21.Show Off and Kinghouses Bell of the Parti black white parti, a double granddaughter of Show Off are expecting around September 25, 1990.Show Offs stud fee is 100.00. At this point I had a 712-week-old pup, a 512-week-old pup and the six pups from the 3 other dams were 2V2 weeks. One of the latter got a severe case of sniffles and stopped nursing. He was taken in a rush to the vet, was pronounced borderline pneumonia and given an antibiotic injection advice to use a baby nasal aspirator was given and he was to be kept on Clavamox liquid for 2 weeks and had to be supplemented with Esbilac since he was not nursing strongly. Round-the-clock care went into him he was a very small puppy, he lost ground to a bigger brother but he pulled through and after weaning began to catch up, but he continued sniffling for a month. His dam sniffled and coughed, badly, for 7 long weeks. His litter brother did not succumb to the kennel cough - sniffle syndrome.Only one of the five dams did not - during THIS time, succumb to the syndrome and only 3 of my other adult dogs got either sniffles or coughing and these lasted but 3-4 days, max. However, two other pups got it, in minor form, one 6-week-old litter of one sniffled for 3 days, her dam not at all one 4-week-old coughed for 3 days, her dam sniffled for 3. Only the dam who coughed for seven weeks had to be given Torbutrol to stop the spasms. No one else had the spasmodic hacking she did. The Turbortol was safe, I was told, for nursing dams as it would not adversely affect the pups so long as I kept her dosage mild 2-V2CC shots in a 24-hour period on her worse days, 1 shot on her better days. Finally all pups were weaned and eating well. By the way, none of the dogs who got infected ever went off food or looked in any way ill, except the tiny 2-week-old who stopped nursing for a week. I began to believe my vets that this upper respiratory thing was more a nuisance than a killer, secondary infections being the fatality factor in dogs of very young or very old age or dogs left without follow-up care, such as the Clavamox, which does NOT cure kennel cough-sniffles but does prevent secondary infections. I was told that upper respiratory symptoms can come from any number of viruses and that 2 or 3 such viruses can run concurrently, such as my cases of either sniffles or cough or the two combined. And it leap-frogs around. Some got it that were in completely separate rooms and some who were kenneled next to a cougher never got it. I also found that weeks after you think its over it resurfaces. 3-4 weeks after weaning, all the pups, except the one who had it at 2 weeks, came down with minor coughs and or sniffles, two of which are still having occasional hacks after 3 weeks of it. All were placed, again, on Clavamox liquid for 10 days. The litter mate to the one who had the24infection at 2 weeks did NOT come down with it when the other weanlings did. He SEEMED to escape scot free. [Olympias note - remember the word seemed we will return to this puppy in next months article. 0.] At present, 2 more adult dogs have gotten symptoms, these two hacking away at intervals, and this is some 12 weeks after it all began. Out of 25 dogs and 8 pups, 13 came down with the problem, most in very minor, brief form. All these except young pups, were well up on Parainfluenza and Adenovirus 2 immunizations and were given Intra Trac II for Bordetella early in the cycle of the disease. No specific virus was isolated by my vets. We do not know if this thing has run its course. Any day another one could start hacking or sniffling. I have talked to others and those who have had contact with this same problem say it took them anywhere from 6 months to 3 years to get it completely eradicated - long periods of freedom from a symptom and then a recurrence. But at least none of mine got sick or died from it, but the nuisance of it is a hand-wringing worry nobody in their worst nightmare wants todream about. You awake in the middle of the night awaiting a new cough or a sneeze. You look at your geriatrics and your young, and pray. That is all you can do, my vets advised, about upper respiratory infections, since only 3 of the many can be prevented by vaccines and little is known about the entire thing. How you get it and when you get rid of it is something you cannot foretell. But there is one disease you can for sure prevent...PARVO, and its kissing cousin, CORONA.Next month Olympia will go into the subject of Parvo, as related by the above breeder who requested no name, please. Due to the length of the story it cannot all be included this month. And for those inquiring minds who asked, DOGS HOWL AND is derived from the term DOGSHOW-LAND, which was the title of an article Olympia did for The Pom Reader when she first started. He attributed the quote to Charles Dickens. His quote seems to hold true where Parti Poms are concerned. We are constantly attempting to improve them through an intelligent breeding program but from time to time that unruly throwback to a spitzier past comes through. This writer is going to tackle the color genetics aspect in this column. Be patient and bear with me if you are already familiar with this some arent. Lets start with the simplest aspect Color.Color as in an artists palette, runs from Black - which contains all colors, to White - which contains no color. Now, lets separate color into two other categoriesDominantRecessiveThese are the most important words youll ever learn as an exotic-color breeder.Dominant is a genetic quality that allows a color to cover over other colors it is stronger than other colors and surfaces more of the time. Recessive is a genetic quality that takes a back seat to other more dominant colors. It doesnt surface unless its lifted by breeding for the recessive.Black is dominantWhite is recessiveBlack is a D large D dominantWhite is an R large R recessiveAh ha Whats this new twist - large D, large R stuff Well, heres the gist of itBlack as a large D dominant looks like this in a genetic equation Black D. White, like this White R. If the black animal has a parent not black, then it also has a recessive gene for that color, expressed as little rBlack Dr Black dominant, small recessive r of some other color. It could be any color all are recessive to black. Now, lets take white. Can it have a small r for a recessive other color No True white is only a large R - it has no other color in it and can only express the color white.Lets set up an equation. Dad dog is black, his mother is white, his dad was black. Mom dog is black, her dad was white, her mom was black. The Pom Reader September 1990Dad Black Dr Mom Black Dr.These two cohabitateBlack Dr x Black DrPuppy 1 Puppy 2 Puppy 3Dd D Dr rr RBlack puppy Black puppy White puppyPuppy number 1 received only Black genes from both parents. Puppy number 2 received Dominant black gene but also a recessive white gene. Puppy 3 receives only white genes and is white but then becomes a large R recessive and only carries white.Puppy 1 will probably never be able to produce white except as a black whose color carries all colors but puppy 2 most certainly will be able to produce white, properly bred. As you can see a color pedigree on your dogs is an essential in assessing dominant and recessive genetic background. You might wonder why I chose black and white as the example for this column - they were chosen because they are the opposite poles of each other and therefore more easily understood. Also, black is essential for pigment in a white breeding program.Mission ImpossibleLets take another crack at it. So far we know that colors have dominant and recessive qualities. Black has all colors in it, from the most dominant to the most recessive. White has no color in it - therefore, is a complete recessive. All the other colors in between have varying degrees of dominance or recess ivity.Parti colors are a pattern, a basically white dog with another color. Patterned Poms are black tan, chocolate tan, blue tan, and parti-colored.Now we have two things to think about color dominance and pattern dominance. Whole colors eliminate other patterns except white and dominant colors cover recessive colors. Here is a graph to give you some idea of what I meanContinued next page33Parti line continued...In order of color dominanceBlackRedRed SableOrangeOrange SableCreamCream SableChocolateBlueLavender very rareIn order of pattern dominanceR - Black and tanChocolate and tanBlue and tanParti ColorsWhite R WhiteWolf sable is not listed. It is so rare it is not considered a reliable producer. Of course, it is recessive. Now, lets do some detective work, using a litter bred by a friend of mine. She bred her linebred orange sable Champion to one of her parti bitches looking only to improve coat and type but lo and behold, she had a parti pup in the litter. What was the explanation First, lets diagram the mating Sire DamOrange Sable D Parti RHis dam Black tan RThe father had no partis in his breeding line, although his dam was a recessive black and tan pattern. The mother was all parti breeding of various colors for three generations. However, it was noted by the two of us that from time to time a white occasionally cropped up in the fathers line, especially if bred to white or a white carrier.Dad donated his dominant color to two of the puppies, but he donated a lone recessive white gene to the third puppy. Mom donated her parti genes to all the puppies and the third puppy was parti marked because it was dominant to dads white gene.I didnt remark on dads black tan mother to confuse you only to show that he carried more than one recessive for color. Had he donated his recessive for black tan the puppy would have been black tan because it is dominant over parti for pattern and color refer to graph. Only the most recessive white gene allowed the parti gene to gain dominance. White is the empty canvas on which all colors are expressed. If youre not an exotic color breeder, by now you are probably shaking your head in disbelief at all the complications. Parti breeders are the risk takers, the forward thinkers, the impossible dreamers of Pom breeding. Join in the fun if you have the mind to theres room for everyone at this PartiTill next month - write or call me on your Parti Line.Nan Shartel409 N. Show Time Hot Chocolate, John Thyssens chocolate bitch that got her title in 1967. There was no intention on my part to misrepresent the two I finished, or to ignore Ms. Straslickas achievements. I apologize to her and to her Ch. Marioms Chocolate Chip for the discomfiture my inadvertent error appears to have caused her.I hope I may be forgiven for not having recalled her two ads placed in The Pom Review in 1978 and 1974 - respectively 9 and 13 years previously. No one else of whom I inquired about previous chocolate champions, prior to submitting my ads, recalled these much earlier ads, either. The prefix, PHYNER, was applied to my Toy Poodles from 1958 through 1981, and to my Poms since 1969. the chocolate gene has appeared from time to time in my established line of blacks, a small group of us are working to create a line of chocolates comparable in uality to the phyner blacks which I am still working to perfect. Most sincerely,Dolly B.
