As you saw on our come-back July 95 hack cover, we had a bred female whose parentage and husband meant a great deal to us.About 4 oclock in the afternoon, after not feeding her the usual supplement meal of cottage cheese and chicken or beef with rice - just in case a section would be necessary - moi said, Oh, what the hey - feed her. She ate like a piglet and within 30 minutes went into labor. Labor progressed well, and by 615 two bubbles presented - i.e., water sacs which precede birth. One bubble pulled back up, nothing too unusual.Behind the water bubble which remained came a breech-presenting puppy. Bernie is adept at getting these type presentations out without undue stress on the dam and themale puppy arrived gasping, but within minutes was squealing and very lively. The water bubble which had retracted again presented and again was retracted.At this point the female was in no discomfort, but was not ready to accept her puppy, in fact growled at him. So we kept him warm and waited patiently for what we just knew was a second puppy.We could feel something hard and twice the size of a marble way up on the right-hand side, just below the bottom rib. This we had not experienced before. However, the female finally settled down, drank water,For those of you who are fairly new to breeding Poms, and do call me from time to time in tears over a disastrous whelping, or the resultant death of the litter or portions of the litter, this is for you. Some of these colors are rarely seen today, but breeders are beginning to give them more attention and it is hoped that eventually they will be available again.The first specialty show of the American Pomeranian Club drew an entry of 138 - in 1911. The second in the following year - an entry of 185. Importation increased and the best England had to offer came to America, regardless of cost. Whites, blacks and chocolates were numerous and blues were quite common. It was not until 1914 that the orange color we see today came into prominence as the choice of the breeders, with sable running second. Our Pomeranian color gene pool is peppered with all sorts of colors, variations of colors and patterns of colors. These colors, and colors never before heard of, have been conscientiously bred by many hard working fanciers into typey and high caliber specimens. Blacks, black and tans, chocolates, creams and parti colors have been around so long, I find it odd to call them rare or exotic, but the exhibitors of these colors tell me that these colors, among others, are still very much stigmatized in the show ring. It takes twice as long to finish them, no matter how high their overall quality. This also means having the time and care to devote to these offspringWhen your kennel reaches the size that you no longer enjoy grooming or playing with your Poms, you must seriously consider you might have too manyPoms are devoted companion dogs, not livestock to be kept and bred and sold like cattle. Keeping 50, 60, or more dogs does not help improve the breed, in my opinion. Every Pom, pet or show quality, deserves to be a star in the eyes of its owner... a Champion in its own right.To cherish each little bright-eyed creature requires love and bonding. Mutual respect, love and caring take time and effort. Maintaining large numbers of dogs makes this all but impossible.I realize that larger numbers of Poms may be necessary for certain breeding programs, but every breeder needs to know their limits and acknowledge the crucial requirements of their Poms beyond food, water and basic vet care. Dont let tunnel vision and dollar signs cloud your vision and cause you to lose sight of why you breed and show Poms in the first place You love the breed, with their smiling faces, cheerful personalities and delightful beauty To make up wild contracts, insisting on the explicit care the Pom you just sold should receive, while your own dogs are emotionally neglected, overcrowded and unkempt certainly shows a lack of conviction. Nuff said.kennel. They dont know you.Yet, now this unsocialized Pom is offered for sale as a pet and sold to a family who wanted to fulfill their desires for a pretty, well-bred Pom from a show breeder. Theyve done their homework and understand they should only purchase from a good breeder, not from pet stores, etcetera. Imagine their disappointment as they try desperately to make this expensive pet respond to their love and active household - a concept which our unsocialized Pom rejects and cant easily grasp. They call the breeder back in frustration, only to be told that they are doing something wrong The breeder tells the agonized purchasers that she never had a moments trouble with this dog. Of course not - she never spent a moments time with himAngrily, our responsible breeder tells them to return the dog... at their expense. After all, she is a responsible breeder who will take her dogs back. The Pom is returned to the breeder where, at once, he is put back out in the kennel with his friends. The dog is overjoyed to be back with his four-footed companions and the breeder is angry with the purchasers because there is nothing wrong with this dog Idiots she exclaims with venom. Look at him... hes fineMeanwhile, the heartbroken family declares they will never buy another dog from a show breeder Those show-bred Poms are too temperamental and not as smart as mutts They tell at least 20 of their friends about this experience with a well-bred show Pom and the breeder. And those 20 friends tell 20 of their friends, and so on.As breeders of show-quality Poms, we must breed But all breeders must know their own limits - how many Poms they can properly keep. One of the mostAt some point, all breeders become faced with a dilemma. We have our adult dogs, yet also keep those fabulous puppies that show a promise of future star quality. Before we know it, its all too easy to keep or acquire more little Poms than we can really, honestly love and care forA responsible breeder with an excellent kennel set-up can handle the overload... for a time. A few more dogs added to the runs, while waiting to see how the fruits of their efforts mature.Unfortunately, those breeders, who produce puppies frequently, soon discover more and more dogs enter the kennel and less and less time is able to be spent loving and cherishing them. Those precious puppies soon become un-socialized kennel dogs, who tread their doggie paths with their kennel mates, missing out on the development of human bonding. They learn to seek out and prefer the company of their four-footed friends and prefer to by-pass human relationships.At one year old, the potential show star didnt turn out the way it was hoped. He has developed major faults and shouldnt be sold for breeding. So, now what is the overcrowded breeder to do There was never any time to handle or groom him much, hes not house-broken and, in fact, he doesnt care that much for people, or know his name, or any simple commands, like sit, stay, or come. So much fun and so different, for those who like different We certainly do, as anyone who knows our kennel would attest. Exciting can no way come close to describing the pure thrill of color breeding.This is even more true when you emphasize quality and temperament in your program. NEVER, I REPEAT, NEVER breed just to be breeding and putting just another dog into this world. There MUST a very good purpose whether you are color breeding or ho hum, just breeding. We have been doing blues, as some would call it, for over twenty years now. A wonderful little chocolate male we acquired many years ago just happened to be a recessive carrier of the partis, whites, wolf sables, and PRAISE GOD blues. He never produced exotic colors, unless he was bred back to one of his own daughters. This can be a very dangerous thing to do. You can get the very best or the very worst. We were so very blessed that Chaco had very good, strong genes. This sweetheart had everything you would ever want in a Pom. He had bone, coat, head, legs and a disposition most breeders would die for in a stud dog. He was our Gorrin Chaco of Great Elms. I have heardsome in the past say he was not Great Elms breeding, that his own_. 1Iers just put that name on him because it was a famous kennel.Do names like CH. GREAT ELMS LITTLE BUDDY twice, CH. GREAT ELMS LITTLE TIMSUE twice, CH. GREAT ELMS LITTLE TIMSTOPPER twice, Great Elms Beauty, and Great Elms Little Pomfashion sound at all familiar to anyone They were all behind Chaco. He may not have been bred at Ruths kennel but he sure did carry some of her famous darlings. Great Elms carried a VERY recessive color gene that was bred away from and thats why once in awhile, the white toes and chest appear. This was only a theory with me, because of Chaco, until I purchased some blues from a lady out24and a half pound, short cobby female. She is orange and her parents are red and cream sable. Her father is a red champion, the same as the sire. The sires mother is black, out of Ch. Queenaire Coup DEtat, a red champion. The black females mother is a cream female, who in turn is out of a chocolate dam and a chocolate parti male. The chocolate female was out of a double-up Chaco black and white son. What line is that champion out of, you might wonder. Well, the champion is Ch. JDs Rambo of Wrightway, whom a dear friend, Dorothy Baumgardner, allowed me to have. You certainly cant tell his line from his name, can you I have kept sons and daughters out of him. I did the breeding, knowing full well that I was going to keep a male out of the breeding. The mother is so gorgeous, and doubling on Rambo should produce nice type. Lo and behold in the whelping process, I get my male. But what is this What color is he Quick, quick, get him dried off. He just cant be what he looks like. Not with THAT breeding Hes drying My dear sweet Friend, youve done it again.Thank you Hes even a more beautiful color dried off. Oh, sorry to keep you waiting. Bet youre wondering what color we got. Should be red or orange, maybe a black or sable. Nope, he is the most beautiful silver you ever saw. Not blue but shiny silver. Friend of mine, now theyll say Ive been mixing the silver poodles with my Poms.Oh, you want to know what line Rambo is out of Well, its the Millamor line. Aristic Pepper Pod Beautiful, Aristic Gay Pepperette, Aristic Mighty Cube and many more.Have you solved the old puzzle of color with me It ALL traces back to Aristic and probably beyond, but Ive only been breeding for thirty-four years, so my pedigrees are limited to that.I have sat back, silently for years, while, all the misconceptions ran rampant about the color breeding. I have received newsletters really putting down the spotted dogs as not being purebred. The only thing is that this kennel breeds the Great Elms line heavily and sometimes gets white feet or chests. Ive heard the spotted dogs come from a mix of Papillon. Did you know that the Pom has no Papillon behind it but I am told by a Pap breeder in Japan that the Papillons do have some Pom in them I have never bred anything but Poms, although with my license and facilities, I could. I am and will always be a Pom Person. Ive had some, in past years, that would see me at a show, and say, Whats SHE doing here. SHE is that color breeder. Im certainly proud of that title. Ive heard the chocolates and blues have a lethal gene. Absurd When I started with blues the one thing I did and still do have, to some extent, is the ears tend not to be real coated but Im overcoming this by breeding other lines into them with heavy coats. I have a champion sired male with no blue in his background that Ive been breeding into my twenty years of blue breeding and he is reproducing the color.You might know he has alot of Great Elms breeding.Speaking of lines. Just this past week I whelped a half brothersister breeding. The mother is a threeinbred. Well, I knew this very sweet lady, Pat, who happened upon a parti male puppy someone wanted to dump very cheap.Why Because he was a parti and at that time no one was working with color. I think the breeder might have also been embarrassed because she had two pets, full brother and sister, and they accidentally bred. They should have been neutered, if running together, but that is in the distant past. Im certainly glad at this time that they were not, because it was a very important piece of my puzzle.Now what did this double-up inbred male have in his background Bingo Aristic.Are you still with me Now you see the Aristic line was in the background of my blues. Now the parti male, Mr. Chocolate of Lake Matthews has Aristic in his background. Well, what in heavens name does that have to do with Great Elms. Easy as apple pie and twice as sweet, to me. You see, CH. GREAT ELMS TIMSTOPPER is behind Chaco. Who are his parents Youre already ahead of me Aristic Little Timstopper and Aristic Lady Pamela. Whoa, what a giant piece to my puzzle. That certainly tells me why I get both blues and partis from that line.Let me go a bit further and mention whites and wolf sables.
