When I think of puppy mill," however, it is more a reflection on the quality produced than on the actual number of dogs. One of the individuals I most admire in the sport of purebred dogs has, well, a lot of dogs. And theyre all in fabulous condition, beautifully housed and obviously loved. She also has, over time, lots of pups. The breeding is scientific, thoughtful, and orchestrated. And the pups, by and large, go on to prove their merit and improve the breed. So thats not, to me, a puppy mill to me a mill is a breeding program in which the only goal is birth.Those are but some of the dopey criteria I have heard through the years there are many more. But I have always trusted my gut instinct and it has only on rare occasion served me wrong. And of course, once the sale is made, we have no control, whether the dogs new home is across the street...or across the globe.It is a pleasure this month to feature a visit with another quality kennel from afar. For years people from foreign lands have complained to me that some of us simply refuse to consider selling quality dogs to them for a number of reasons, several of which just make no sense. As you read of the sport in the Philippines, rejoice with me that we have true dog lovers on virtually all parts of the planet. And for the betterment of the breed...weve all got to work together.Happy Thanksgiving. Until next month, Poms Awaywas rich as midas it also seemed a stupid reason to sell her a dog. Certainly financial freedom, when coupled with other attributes, would seem the best of all possible worlds, but by itself it is no measure of responsibility. I have known more than a few monied individuals to whom I would not entrust the care of a goldfish. And I have seen households, somewhat strapped for expendable cash, in which the needs of the kids and the household pets are first and foremost money is carefully budgeted and all necessities - and a sufficient number of niceties - are provided without question. So material possessions are not a great measure of a prospective owners worthiness.Kids No Kids I grow most irritable when told by a breeder that he refuses to sell a dog to anyone with children. I shudder to think what my childhood would have been - and how it might have affected my present - had I not always been blessed with a pet. One of the reasons Im involved in this sport is to ensure that the children of the future be able to love a happy, healthy pet.Yet of course there are concerns a wild child could certainly make life uncomfortable for a pet, in particular a pet of small stature. Meeting the family can assuage these fears one can quickly pick up on the family dynamics and if the whole bunch are creeps, theyre shown the door. But simply x-ing people with children out of the buying equation seems as thoughtless as selling to anyone who wanders up the street.She 's a puppy mill To some people, anyone with more than two intact dogs is a breeding factory. This simply makes no sense. To be a breeder, you have to breed when you breed with luck, anyways you get pups. And to contin- -r ue to grow, improve, and refine aAnother bestseller that I have yet to write is I Hate To Sell Dogs by JMcG. It has long been a joke around here that, if asked, I always tell callers that we have nothing to sell. Im never sure a pup wont turn out to be irreplaceable Im always uncertain I can bear to let that cute one go. And in any case, I know that when it comes to longevity, health, and happiness for a dog that Ive bred in somebody elses care, there is no guarantee.Nobody I know has a crystal ball that can predict what is to come. It is difficult enough to plan for ones own future relying on present conditions in another household to accurately predict its atmosphere down the line is probably unrealistic. And yet, when placing a dog with a new owner, that is what we have to do.We can check credentials till were blue in the face and still leave questions unanswered. Any veterinarian will vouch for a big-spending client, and lots of breeders will give high marks to a buyer who bought, in the past, with no complaints. We ourselves are guilty of misinformation to some degree The dog fancy has long been afflicted with a hotly-humming grapevine over which, at times, tales have traveled which do not reflect the facts. So were left in a quandary what do we believe, in whom do we place trust, when do we feel safe to sell Unfortunately, there are no easy answers. And yet Ive heard of some really priceless criteria by which prospective owners are judged...The Car, the Clothes, the apparent Cash, One of my favorite descriptives came from a friend while referring to a woman she knows who is very wealthy. Dogs should chew bones, not eat them. If you see your dogs eating a bone then remove it. Rawhide bones could irritate the stomach so be sure to watch for constipation or vomiting. Many rawhide chews are manufactured in third- world countries where health standards are lower and many chews have been found to contain insect eggs and have been washed in contaminated water.Do you know what to do if your dog chokesHere are steps to follow.............1. Open the dogs mouth and look for the object that is choking the animal. If you an see or feel anything, try to remove it. Be careful as your dog might bite as he may be disoriented.2. If you cant see a foreign object, immediately lay your dog on his side on the floor. Place a pillow or towel under his hips so his head is lower than the hind quarters.3- Then place both your hands on the animals diaphragm just beneath his rib cage and rapidly depress the diaphragm four or five times in a thrusting motion.For a very small animal or puppy you can pick the dog upside-down with his back against your chest. Then wrap your arms around the midsection and gently sway the animal back and forth for several seconds.Try to find the best specimen of the breed you can afford. You should always be allowed a 24 or 48 hour approval time to have the animal checked by your vet. This is a time to evaluate the personality and structure. The sweet taste of antifreeze makes it attractive to your pet, and all the more critical that you keep your pets far from it.Ethylene glycol is the active ingredient in most brands of antifreeze...and it is deadly. Just one lick is enough to cause serious kidney damage and blindness within hoursIf you suspect that your dog has come in contact with antifreeze, be sure to contact your veterinarian immediately. They only care that they are loved, fed, and well taken care of...0 0 0DID YOU KNOW...Misuse or overuse, of pesticides can cause health problems for your dogs and yourself If your dog is sensitive to a chemical, the problems could be major, including respiratory, or neurological difficulties.Below are some basic rules to use as a guide....1. Read the label twice, and follow the instructions exactly. Be sure not to combine products and to retreat for X number of days as instructed.2. When using the products, use the proper amount and no more.3. Watch for side effects and sensitivity for several hours.4. Protect yourself.Be sure to wear a mask or face shield, rubber gloves, and be sure the area is well ventilated.5. Be sure to keep flea products away from children. Be sure your dog doesnt ingest the product by licking or biting himself.6. The young and the old are more sensitive to flea products and should be monitored closely.If you have questions about a product, check with your vet or poison center.ior patterns are altered. When I originally began writing for the Pom Reader, long before I became an employee of Doll-McGinnis Publications as an ad salesperson, I wrote more humorous articles than I eventually got into.In those days people called and said, Hey-we love your column, it gives us a laugh. Then, somehow, my articles became more serious and I got off on a different track. Looking back, I can see that people began phoning or writing about more serious themes in our Pom Breed, mainly because they wanted a Forum for their serious interest in the breed and its problems and they assumed my long tenure in the breed was a bridge over which to walk to get some of these serious jobs done.I am very happy about that, although I wish to say my long tenure has made me no more of an expert than anyone else in fact there are many Pom Fanciers out there whose longevity far outdistances mine and \ many, many \fanciers,whether of \long or short longevity whose show careers far, far surpass my own humble one.But Dog-Show-Land was where I originated from since the late fifties in breeds other than Poms and the Pom beginning began in 1967.Since, lately, readers of the The Reader have requested a few chuckles and a little input on my longevity I decided for this issue to go back in time.Everyone asks me, How did you get into Poms Well, since you asked...Bemie and I were in the courting stage and as courtships go, there are ups and downs. He had experienced a heart attack at the early age of 36 and in those days the physicians did not recommend walking or, heaven- forbid, running. He and I were both in German Shepherds. He had to choose another breed. In a quandary, we went to a fun match, showing our last shepherd, and there I spotted a little piece of redfluff with high set ears, sharp, knowing eyes and an attitude that plainly said Hey you, look at me I may be small but Im mighty and if youdont believe it,watch me kick a-----------,er, ahh-dirtThe dirt this little red guy kicked was only a rubber mat in a dog show ring but he performed more miracles to show his tuff little stuff. He hiked his leg on the first place position in the fun match group ring, on the judges pant leg and on the stockings of his lady handler. Then he kicked more dirt, and, tail set high over back to touch his gorgeous little head, he strutted his way around the ring to Best-In-Match and grinned his elfin way through all the photos taken to prove his triumph.I was hooked, line and sinker.My birthday was upcoming and Bernie knew dam well what I wanted. He knocked again. I kept saying Ha and then I finally opened it. He had something in a paper sack. A real paper-paper sackKnowing that I loved ice-cream I figured he had brought that little incidental thing to go along with the cake nobody baked for me. But I let Bernie in.I wasnt going to give in easily. My vanity needed assuaging and, after all, there was no cake to go with the ice cream, I grabbed the sack and was about to throw it against the wall-splatt-Ha Bernie moved fast, Dont he yelled and I stopped. Something moved in the paper sack. MovedI knew well his propensity for picking up stray things, like baby squirrels fallen from a nest, a duckling lost from its mother, a turtle about to get hit on the road. I stopped, paper sack in hand, half way in mid air. Something moved again. S-L-O-W-L-Y I peeked into the paper sack. It was a squirrel Grayish with slight black tippings and v-e-r-y small.morning,and they ate scrambled eggs together. Mom felt safe with Little Bit inthe house. Little Bit barked whenshe heard any noise in the nearby area and stood guard when mom had neighbors or strangers in the yard or house.Finally, mom had to enter a nursing home and Little Bit had to come back to live with us. Little Bit died of a heart attack in her sleep, and we tried to keep this from mom, but mom, somehow, knew.After that, mom sunk slowly, too. Little Bit and mom have been together now for 17 years in a better place, but Little Bits legacy lives on in our hearts, and in all the hearts she touched here on this earth. Honestly we never expected nor dreamt that someday this would happen to us - this is really beyond our expectations. As far as we know, only the authorities in the breed are invited for a kennel visit and this is a real honor for our kennel to be recognized.1I ly converted into a zoo already, regardless of their furious objections. True enough, before they knew it, we were begging for their permission. However, our parents with the same desire to get rid of all the pets in the house made a tricky offer. We could only have a dog if all the other pets will go. I guess the rest is history.It was I who had always wanted a Pomeranian as a pet dog for the house and I influenced the whole family to agree with me. However, I was not sure where to get one since I only saw them in a dog book. My hunch was correct. During that period, nobody was breeding this type of dog. In desperation, the family settled for a Japanese Spitz.Then, the Rottweiller breed became11very popular in the country. It was egotistically prestigious to own even one and an eventual symbol of wealth. We IJ were not spared from the Rottweiller- [l Mania and we were fortunate to ownI one of the first imports from Germany rl through the help of a good familyH friend. We only breed our females once a year we are lucky if they take and usually have 2-4 litters per annum. We sold her to a friend in fW Hong Kong as she was too small 3.5 lbs. to breed and immediately made a mark in the show ring to become a Hong Kong champion. The next litter came out to be Ph. Ch. ChrisDens Lil Bill Baron who finished in seven 7 shows by winning the Toy Group. Furthermore, we are indeed very grateful to her for producing the group winning PH.Gr. Ch. ChrisDen Wizard Maiden Mikee sire by our Gee Whiz.We do linebreeding and outcrossing, and have read that linebreeding is the sure way to success. However, as the saying goes there is no perfect dog and somehow, we find faults in every I line that we can live with at the moment.
