As 1996 unfolds for each of us, may we all appreciate and love our dogs more.Did you know...THAT ANIMAL RESEARCH ONCE TESTED ON DOGS FOR HUMANS CAN NOW BE USED ON DOGSBefore pacemakers were used in humans, they were tested in dogs. Now, those same pacemakers that saved humans lives, can be used to save the lives of dogs. The following is the account of a dog that gave birth and the result of what it took to save her and her puppies.Shortly after Suzie gave birth for the first time, she fainted several times. She couldnt nurse and she had trouble breathing. She had experienced a long and hard labor and at first her owners thought this was the cause of her condition.Suzie was taken to her vet and it was noted that her heartrate was only 43 beats a minute and the normal is around 120. An electrocardiogram indicated that Suzie had a third- degree heart block. This is a disorder of the heart muscle that means the nerves conducting her heartbeat were not contracting. The solution to this problem would be to implant a pacemaker.The surgery consisted of cutting a hole in her diaphragm and reaching forward with an electrode and connecting her heart muscle to a pacemaker. The pacemaker was inserted inside a pocket that the vet made near the incision line in the abdominal wall.The pacemaker was half the size of an ice hockey puck. It weighed about 3-12 ounces. It now became the conduit to life for Suzie. The recuperation time was four days. Suzie was not able to nurse her puppies but the instinct was there. A size one month baby sacket turned upside down was placed on Suzie with the snaps pointing upward around her neck to protect her from the litter. She was able to lay with her puppies while they were fed by their human mom.To date, the original pacemaker has been replaced with one the size of a silver dollar and she continues to be monitored by the veterinarian.Did you know...THAT COMMON SENSE MAY JUST BE THE ANSWER TO MANY PUZZLING VETERINARY ILLSThe following article appeared in a recent issue of ShowSight Magazine, the acclaimed all-breed publication owned by the publishers of The Pom Reader.ON THE LINE by BJ ANDREWS BRILLIANT SCIENCE OR SIMPLE SOLUTIONSI was so impressed by the following article that I contacted Dr. Todd for reprint permission. After chatting with him a few minutes, I was even more dazzled with his quick mind and down to earth sensitivity.Last months column contained criticism of the medical community.I make no apologies for that but amThe Pom Reader January 199615always gratified when I come in contact with professionals like Dr. Todd.Discussing the serious, sometimes fatal side effects of Prostaglandin therapy, he explained that he still uses it in closed Pyometra but for a much shorter time.Prostaglandins have been a boon for many, but not without high risk an high cost. We will pay any price to prevent spaying a valuable bitch, previously, the only treatment for closed pyometra. We accepted the possibility that it could jeopardize future reproductive ability. We knew it didnt always work, and we cared not that the treatment was fairly profitable for our vet.Maybe its the cynic in me that I cant help but wonder how many other bright young professionals have considered Dr. Todd common sense approach and discarded the idea. DCs are performed on woman by the thousands.Sometimes needed, sometimes not. for the most part though, it works well in human medicine.And Ive just got to share another of his simple solutions, which cat lovers should pass along to their own vets. Confronted with a delicate surgical procedure, Dr. Todd was concerned about scarring and the possibility of the cat opening the incision. As everyone knows, a cats tongue is covered with tiny look-like projections which are worse that sandpaper. Rather than subject the cat to collars, heavy sedation, or other standard management techniques, the inventive Dr. Todd simple shaved the cats tongueYeah, he solved the problem with no discomfort, no risk, and no permanent effect upon the feline patient. The rough surface of the cats tongue grew back by the time the incision was safely healed. I told you this guy is brilliantFor every problem there is a solution. Some not as profitable as others but many are definitely kinder to the patient. Lets hope this article by Dr. Todd gets us all to thinking.There are many times in veterinary medicine that decisions are made on other than original teachings. We are taught for such and such a condition, you use this medication for such and such arthritic malady, you perform this surgical procedure for prevention of such and such disease, you give this vaccine for pyometra- you spay.I was confronted with just such a situation where a very important feline was presented with pyometra. Classical symptoms of vaginal discharge of purulent materials, dehydration, low grade fever and white blood cell count of 42,000 normal 6000-17,000. This particular cat was important to the breeder because of a particular color gene, as well as the genetic makeup that would have been lost if she were spayed. This breeder had worked for many years to obtain this combination and it would be a real loss. She was hesitant to spay, so we talked about options. Medical treatment of pyometra is routinely plagued by adverse reactions to hormones and the likely scarring of the uterus because of damage to the endometrial lining, due to the nature of the infection. We considered several options and chose to use a human procedure, and do a DC. But how, in the world, do you do a feline DC when its not in the textbookI decided to do an exploratory to assess the tissue of the uterus and at that point elected to proceed.The uterus was opened with a small incision at its bifurcation, where it changes from its command body into its two lengthy horns. The necrotic material was swapped for culturing and the rest was evacuated by gentle massage. We then used, I liter of sterile saline solution towhich we added 1 gram of cephalesxin. Many flushes were done by syringe with enough force to expand the uterus. Sterile cotton tipped applicators were then used to debride scratch the surface the entire endometriumm. I feel this step was important to remove necrotic material and deep clean the uterus of pockets of bacteria. Finally, re-flushing was done, using the mixture as above. Closure of the small uterine incision was then routine. I instructed the owner to continue with antibiotic prescribed unless I notified her to change based on the culture results, and to allow breeding at the next available heat cycle. The bottom line for this breeder was four very healthy kittens bom to carry on the gene pool that was so importantTypically medical therapy has risks, as did this procedure.However, the benefit of observing the uterine condition by exploratory, at least allows you to take either option. Medical therapy should not be done when the uterine tissue is weakened as it may mpture and risk losing, not only the uterus, but the cat as well.I hope this procedure is done more often in the right circumstances. It made quite a difference in this particular instance.John M. Good, isnt itNow go ahead. Select a large mixing bowl, measuring cup, etc., check the rum again. It must be just right. To be sure rum is of the highest quality, pour one level cup of rum into a glass and drink it asfast as you can, repeat..........With an electric mixer beat1 cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of thugar and beat again. Meanwhile, make sure the rum is of the finest quality. Try another cup. Open second quart, if necessary. Add2 arge leggs, 2 cups fried druit and beat til high. If druit gets stuck in beaters, just pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the rumagain, checking for tonscisticity.Nest sift 3 cups of pepper or salt, it really doesnt matter.Sample the rum again. An impossible dream, I thought, given that Jane lived in the northeast comer of Minnesota, literally hundreds of miles from most of the shows at that time.But as unconventional as the idea of a serious toy kennel on the Iron Range seemed to be, I soon leaned that nothing about Jane was particularly ordinary not her location, her determination, or her drive.Even my introduction to her was unusual. Most dog people meet through other dog people or become acquainted at shows, training classes, or other doggy goings-on. Jane and I met through my father. When he told me hed met someone who lived five miles from him who wanted to start breeding and showing Pomeranians, I was more than a little skeptical. My comment was, Shed have better luck with polar bears.Although I dismissed that conversation from my mind, it soon became obvious that neither my dad nor JaneThe Pom Reader January 1996intended to let me forget about her. I kept her hearing about her and eventually received a letter from her.Then another letter. And another.We met some months later when I visited my parents, and it was pretty clear that Janes enthusiasm was going to make up for the difficulties caused by her polar-bear locale. I learned that Jane had become hooked on Poms a couple of years earlier when she saw them at a show while visiting relatives and showing a Doberman in Obedience in Des Moines. She said the Poms reminded her of a miniature version of the Malamutes her parents had bred and were a lot more portable Something clicked and the Poms became it.Giver her inclination toward the unusual, Jane was drawn to the rarer colors in Poms, and she purchased a black male puppy form Marge Gorman, Boulder River Pomeranians. She crossed her fingers that shed be able to shoe Inki in conformation, but he grew too large for the ring and was neutered. As other blacksfollowed, and more disappointment, Jane was ready to consider the more typical colors when Marge introduced her to Ken Bishop, Ken Nors Poms, the following year. Ken sold her Nickie, an orange sable of Theldun-Golden Glow background who became her first champion, Am. and Can. Ch. There she saw Johnnys grandfather, May Morning Social Lion Tommy, and was impressed with his heavy coat, rich red color, and soundness, even though he was quite old by this time. Jan Les Willie Makit ROM, GC.Although Janes dogs and ours had little in common we both spelled Pom the same, Jane and I wrote frequently, exchanging information and, as more clubs in Minnesota began holding point shows, seeing each other more often. I dont know if I can pinpoint just when we became sisters, but the fact that we did eventually led to a change in the direction of Janes breeding program.Over a period of years I foundthat, even though I often didnt agree with some of Janes breeding plans, I did admire many of her practices. It was obvious that the good of the breed was her top concern, with no exceptions. This dedication manifested itself from the beginning of our friendship, when she didnt hesitate to neuter or spay a dog that she felt shouldnt be bred, whether because of a characteristic of its own or a quality it was producing that she deemed objectionable. And she adamantly required that every pet she placed be spayed or neutered.Her insistence on breeding and showing only her best dogs led her to the practice of rarely selling show prospects to other breeders, whichshe has continued to this day, saying that too often a prospect doesnt mature as expected or hoped and she doesnt want to be responsible for disappointing anyone or to see one of her dogs in the ring if she doesnt feel it belongs there.I also liked the fact that Jane kept the dogs in the house with her, rather than in a separate kennel building, and she never considered caging them as their numbers grew. That has continued throughout her years in dogs. She does have a room separated into sections by dismantled exercise pens attached to the walls as needed for dogs who need to be separated from the others, as well as a large kitchen area, again separating with pen sections as needed, for puppies and any other dogs who need extra attention. It sometimes makes for a bit of an obstacle course for humans, but it does ensure the greatest comfort, security, and attention for the dogs.These similarities in our ways of thinking finally let to a major change in 1984.1 had gone back to school full-time in 1983 and had my hands full with classes, schoolwork, and our two-legged kids, and a houseful of dogs. The thought of getting to shows became more remote with each semester in addition to my lack of time, Jons allergies, which had grown to include the dogs in the late 70s, had become so severe that he was unable to pick up most of our dogs without developing a burning rash, in spite of years of allergy shots. His reaction to the numbers of animals at a show site became unmanageable, leading to coughing spasms that actually frightened nearby dogsThe timing, from a doggy point of view, couldnt have been worse. We had wonderful results from the breedings of our girls with their Dixieland-Bonner backgrounds to Rocky, Ch. Dixieland Rock of Millamor, whose mother, Dixielands Veronica, was a full sister to Dixielands Melody Box, the dam of our Ch. Dixielands Little Bagatelle, who had sired many of our girls. Three of these Rocky kids were particularly good, in our opinion, and the idea of their reaching old age without ever being shown struck me as a waste of everything wed worked toward with the dogs.At the same time, Jane, who loves showing more than breathing, was climbing the walls because she had finished all of her own possibilities and had no prospects within several months of show stage. I dont think either of us realized that we were setting in motion a new direction for her breeding program and the end to Johns and mine.We agreed that Jane would show Midas Rock Tempo T.K. and Midas Ragtime Rock Pudding, Rocky sons, and Midas Sophisticated Lady Beth, a T.K. daughter, in exchange for T.K.s and Puddings breeding services to Janes bitches. To be sure that Jane didnt come up on the short end of this arrangement, we also sent her Beths mother, Dixielands Music Box Delta, to breed, with the idea that Jane would keep the litter. Delta was a daughter and granddaughter of Ch. Millamors Rock Music, a half brother to Ch. Millamors Moon Rock, Rockys father. Although Delta herself fell a little short in the looks department, at least in my opinion, she had already proven her worth to us by free-whelping a litter of three that included two outstanding pups.From Janes perspective, the use of our kids in her breeding program meant a chance to add improved type and coat to her dogs good bone, sound movement, and short backs. She put American and Canadian championships on T.K., Pudding, and Beth very quickly included Group wins from the classes for Pudding and Beth. At the same time, she repeated the breeding of T.K. and Delta, which gave her multiple Group-winning Am. and Can. Ch. Midas Fascinating Rhythm, who sired Ch. Jan Les Mark My Word, Am. and Can. Ch. Jan Les Johnny Hates Jazz, and Ch. Debonnes Boxcar Willie, the sire of Maker, Janes BIS-Winning Am. and Can. Ch. Jan Les Willie Makit ROM, GC.Along the way, I had to face the fact that Jons and my breeding days were over, and we signed Delta over to Jane. Breeding Pudding to Delta gave her multiple Group-winning Am. and Can. Ch. Jan Les Ragtime Music Screamer, who sired Am. and Can. Ch. Jan Les Til We Meet Again Tillie, Makerss mother.Maker undoubtedly was Janes most satisfying achievement, a wonderful culmination of the dogs from her earlier breedings and from ours. From the day he was bom, this little guy had that extra-special look we always hope for but rarely see, and it soon became obvious that his attitude was as extraordinary as his appearance. Jon, the original Mr. Wait-and-See, saw him at the age of eight weeks and came home raving about the spectacular puppy who owned Janes place. In addition to his Look At Me manner, Maker was a striking deep, clear orange, very typey, cobby and sound-moving. He had everything every breeder works toward.He started his show career at seven months of age, won back to back Group Is, and finished at the age of eight months at the Des Moines Pom Specialty by going Best of Breed over a Special. He won the specialty three years in a row. His Best in Show came at Dubuque in 1993- Best of all, he demonstrated that he could reproduce much of his type, color and attitude, siring six champion kids to date Ch.Millamors Millie Makit, Ch. Millamors Makin Music, Ch. Jan Les Justa a Dash of Millamor, Ch. Millamors Brandi Maker, Ch. Jan Les Maker of Fools Chance, and Ch. Beaver Creek Simon Says.Maker, tragically, was killed this past summer at the age of four in a freak accident when Janes Schipperke jumped a fence, and landed on top of him. Jane lost not only a valuable breeding and show dog, but also her best buddy and bed companion. He does have more children nearing show stage, and Jane says that one of his sons, Chance, is a near-perfect image of him.A loss such as Maker might have destroyed the will to continue in a less determined person, but Jane continues to work with Eleanor Miller, who she met at Jean Browns years ago when she took Delta to be bred to Rocky. After many letters and much conversation, Eleanor sent her Bev Nors Brandi of Millamor, the daughter of a black and tan, on a co-lease. She had first seen one in Canada being shown by Tiil Labovich in the mid-19S0s. In addition to type and sound movement, Can. Ch. Jayenns Tea Cup Tigers pattern rekindled Janes interest in unusual colors, and she wasted no time in taking Pattys Happy Tyme Gypsy Rose, sired by her early Ch. Thelduns John John, to be bred to this dog. Although the resulting bitch puppy appeared to be black at birth, Jane was astonished to discover orange hairs on a back leg the next day when she examined the puppy in the sunlight. She had her brindle.Jan Les Tiger in My Tea Lindy was the beginning of four generations of brindles for Jane to date. In the fourth generation, Jan Les Rumm Tumm Tigger, a Maker daughter co-owned by Judy Mehciz, became the first major-pointed brindle in the history of the breed last spring, and Jan Les Color Me Badd Nedd, a Maker son, being shown by Erika Moureau, won a major in the fall. Both are sound, typey, with good, harsh coats, and have their fathers outgoing personality, which, combined with their color, makes them hard to ignore.Jane has found other breeders reactions to the color to be polarized They either love it or hate it. Judges often dont know what to do with it the Standard doesnt specifically list brindle as a recognized color. When I saw it for the first time at Janes this past summer, I was fascinated by it and look forward to the day the Standard is revised to allow all colors and patterns.If one were to say that Janes life revolves around the dogs she loves, it is certainly true dogs are her hobby, and also her profession. Janehas been an extremely successful professional dog groomer since 1979, and currently operates a very large grooming shop in conjunction with an extremely plush pet supply salon in Virginia, Minnesota, near her residence town of Iron, Minnesota.My visit to Jane left me with deep admiration for the much she has accomplished in pursuit of her goals. When we returned from Minnesota,a local breeder asked if Jane had anything good right now, and, after thinking about it for a minute, I had to reply, I dont think I saw anything bad.
