The cast is flushed with effort no one doubts the toll that has been taken in their effort to weave the evenings make- believe, yet no one in the audience is unaware of his own fatigue he almost feels as if he had been working right along. In fact, he has...There is a term for it the willing suspension of disbelief . For the patron to accept the plot, or the lyric, or the illusion, he must disregard his cynicism for the running time of the production. He must believe that the actor is an ogre, a sinner, a saint he must trust that the singer expresses truth and he must willingly follow down the road he is led. It is the magic of the performing arts, and the ability to be charmed by it is possessed by all but the most insensitive.It has a parallel in the sport of purebred dogs. In order to assess the quality of an animal, within the confines of a conformation event, one must ignore the very qualities which endear dog to owner and for which the companion animal exists the judge cannot be swayed by sentiment, nor by imagination. It is difficult, for the dog-lover is by nature attuned to the outpouring of love from the canine heart and head, and our judging process makes little allowance for its measure. And yet it is our nature to reward loyalty, and friendliness, and spirit.The art of judging dogs is not the simple exercise some would perceive it to be. One must accept the confines of the active criteria, using it as a guideline by which decisions are made one cannot predict the exhibits future quality nor impact on the breed, for the judging call must only cite qualities in evidence on the day. And ones own preferences may only be called into play when all other areas are equal. This, then, is the willing suppression of sentiment. Ones natural inclinations and emotions must be ignored when arriving at a responsible decision as a dog-show judge.Its a good art to master early on for it applies on many levels. Breeders must supply equal love and care to pups of distinctly different quality to do otherwise would be cruel. Exhibitors likewise must face facts attributes we view through loving eyes may be simply insufficient to compete on the level we expect. And all of us are restrained by the fact that in the conformation arena we are restricted to judging to the Standard the attributes that we admire most as dog-lovers are perhaps better measured in other venues the field, the playground, and the living-room.This was never more apparent to me than during a judging assignment in England, during which I found the easiest class to judge in the history of dogdom to require one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make.There is nothing quite so exciting as a class of lovely, high-quality dogs placing them in order of adherence to the standard is a pleasurable task. By the same token, there is nothing quite so prosaic as evaluating inferior specimens, for one simply chooses the least bad to represent best. On the day in question I had been called upon to evaluate many classes, comprised of both types of collections, and felt that I was adequately fulfilling the role I was asked to play. This feeling of contentment was about to be dashed.At first sight the Veterans class posed no problem at a glance I saw there were but three contenders and only two of any immediate interest whatsoever. Upon closer examination I found the two males to be in great shape, given their ages, and they fulfilled all aspects of the Standard in admirable fashion. To most any eye their placement was a tossup each possessed sufficient quality to advance to further competition. By the merest suggestion of superior head properties the second-in-line, lighter-colored dog moved forward in my estimation I placed him at the head of the line. And then I approached the examination table upon which my old lady waited.One could quickly dismiss her from consideration on coat-quality alone her hair was thin and in places it was patchy. The manner in which she moved her head led me to believe that if she had vision at all it was far from acute, and joints that may have once strongly carried her about showed the ravages of age. Her hindquarters seemed toodelicate to resist even the slightest pressure, and her dentition was such that her tongue could not help but protrude. Yet she welcomed my strangers hands, and her tail slapped back and forth without relent. With grave misgivings I asked to see her gait...She hit the floor and suddenly she was once again a star. She took off like a trooper, full of pride, full of love. I felt she would have walked for miles in concert with her owner and for that alone deserved a large and shining prize. My heart swelled with love for the aged princess and from my eyes the tears freely flowed. I immediately decided that by virtue of her spirit she was far and away my winner that day.But of course that is not the way things work, and when viewed alongside the others it was apparent that her place in my heart had no bearing on her place in the line I had no choice but to distribute the awards in order of adherence to the Standard on that day. And that day, she was last.As I handed out the ribbons I felt like hell. Why have we subjected her to this, I raged, in mental argument with myself, Hasnt she given enough How can I possibly give her anything but the worlds most wondrous rewardWell in a way I guess I did. For right there in England, in front of God and everybody, I picked her up. And I gave her a kiss. And I wished her many more days of love and health. And I vowed never again to put myself into that position I cant take it. And I found myself with renewed admiration for those who make those tough decisions, on a weekly basis, for the betterment of our breeds, and a better understanding of why they seem so tired when they get through.And so it was with grave misgivings I agreed to judge Sweepstakes for a Pom Specialty, knowing that Veteran classes would be offered on the day. And then I thought to myself, well, if there are boys and girls, no longer young, willing to strut their stuff one more time...theres a Pom lover, also no longer young, willing to do his very best job in thanks for all theyve given him. We didnt have another mother that could take him. I tried to feed him groul and even used a dropper and a spoon. He was not interested in eating He was drinking some water but was straining to make a stool.Benson and I went out to eat at a seafood restaurant and when we were ready to leave he decided to take a couple of hush puppies with us. When we arrived home, Benson said, I think the puppy will eat tonight, He fixed ground puppy food, added some mashed hush puppies, added a dash of regular sugar and mixed all of the ingredients with warm water. We placed the dish in the box with the puppy and let him lick some of the mixture off our fingers. He started eating until the dish was almost empty. Within twohours, the puppy had emptied his bowels and was playing with a toy he had previously ignored. I stood and watched him and was totally surprised but very happy.We decided the sugar made the food taste good, the hush puppy mix helped him have a stool and the ground puppy food helped keep his stomach in check. We decided he might have felt full from not having a stool or he could have had a stomach ache. Anyway, it was a successful attempt get a puppy to eat and we wanted to share our story.By the way, hush puppies were fed to hunting dogs years ago to keep them quiet and that was how they got their name. In our case, the hush puppy helped our puppy be a live puppyDid you know...THERE ARE SEVERAL SIGNS TO WATCH FOR TO FIND OUT IF YOURPET IS IN PAIN.........................Since our pets can not talk, we have to be in tune for signs of pain. An obvious personality change is the first signal your pet gives when there is something wrong. Since welive with our pets, any changes noted are important to your vet when he or she is trying to find out what is wrong with our pets.Another clue to an animal being in pain is they will often pull a disappearing act and seek out a quiet place to be by themselves. One of our females was ill recently and she growled at the other females she usually played with and would go sit in the corner. This was a clue to us something was wrong.Another sign is restlessness. Be on the lookout for constant pacing and position changing as if your pet can not get in a comfortable position.We need to be wary if a pet acts agitated and cries out when he or she is picked up or stroked in certain areas. With a Pom we can accidently pull a hair when we pick them up.If your pet suddenly refuses food and water, this could be a signal for a sore throat, tonsillitis or even a toothache. They produce minute larvae, called microfilaria, that circulate in the blood. When a mosquito bites an infected dog, it ingests the microfilaria and then transmits them to other dogs it bites.Dogs with heartworms tire easily, cough have difficulty breathing and lose weight in spite of a good appetite and diet.For many years, Caparsolate was the drug of choice for treating heart- worm. Now, a new drug, Immiticide, is available and offers several improvements. This drug is nontoxic to the liver and kidneys and the dosage can be adjusted based on the condition of the infection. This helps to prevent an overdose and it is easier to administer. Preventive medications are available either on a daily or monthly basis . In the June 1996 issue of The Reader, we published the revised version which at that time had been approved by the American Kennel Club and was up for votes by the APC membership. The proposed 1996 Pom Standard is now official, waiting only to be published in The AKC Gazette, which should be approximately 2 months from the final vote count, which was June 30th. If you have no copy of The New Pom Standard, we have repeated it in this issue for your convenience.At this time of the year all of us should remember the word hot. I know, I know, we have all read and re-read about heat strokes in dogs and the warning do not leave your dog in a car, even for a few moments, in the summer. However, no matter how many times you have read it, it bears repeating. I witness so much of it here just for a moment, which stretches into perhaps fifteen minutes, a driver leaves the car to enter a store and leaves the window or windows down just a few inches. I have seen dogs panting away, jumping over seats, clawing at windows. It doesnt take long for a car to turn into a furnace.In fact, it was last summer when I noticed a poodle in a car who wasobviously going into heat stroke mode. The lady ownerdriver of the car had left 2 windows slightly down, and had gone into a local drugstore to pick up a prescription. In her mind, no doubt, she felt she was gone only a moment or two, but when I discovered the poodle panting and clawing at windows, I knew it had been longer than that proverbial moment. After the air conditioning has been turned off in the car, in muggy heat, it takes only moments for the car to become a hot box that can lead to death.I went into the drugstore and informed the manager and also called the Police. I was prepared to smash the ladys car window to rescue the dog, for which I probablywould have been sued. At any rate the drugstore manager used the store intercom to call for the lady who had left the poodle in the car while I tried to figure what I had in my car that would smash the window, without injuring the dog. All the while I was wishing the lady was in the poodles place.The lady emerged from the drugstore and was absolutely irate. Her words to me are unprintable unless you are publishing a pom magazine.I pointed out the poodles obvious distress, she told me I should mind my own expletive deleted business and was upset that the store manager had told her the police were on the way. The article was titled Pasco says Goodbye to one of its finest.The article, with a flower strewn casket photo, went on to say that a gun salute and K-9 Honor Guard couldnt stop the flood of tears as the Pasco County Florida Police Force, the County Sheriff and many Police Force Members from all over Central Florida attended, in full panoply, the funeral.Flash, the 8 and a half year old German Shepherd K-9 Dog, was mourned as a colleague of the Police Department. He was described as devoted and loyal, everything a good law enforcement officer should be, to quote our local county sheriff.Flash joined the Pasco County Sheriffs Department in 1993 and during his time on the force he made at least 153 suspect apprehensions, including 40 felony, 81 misdemeanors and 32 drug busts. He also served in many public demonstrations of how the K-9 Force works.What has this got do with us The nature of the sad death. As all K-9 dogs do, they serve all their time on duty with one officer and their off- duty hours in that officers home.Our sheriff stated that in the truest sense of the word the K-9 dog and police officer handler are partners, who would give their lives for one another.Flash was left in a police car,with air conditioner running, as his partner went into police headquarters to participate in a training course. The air conditioner failed and the temperature control alarm malfunctioned due to a blown fuse.When Flashs partner returned to the police cruiser he found Flash in great distress. Immediately CPR was performed, but it was too late. The necropsy report showed that Flash died of heat exposure. Flashs police partner has served 10 years in the K-9 Police Unit andworked in the Military K-9 Unit for 4 years prior to that. I can well imagine that Flashs Police Partner knew just about everything there was to know about handling and caring for a fine K-9 Officer and that this officerhandler has been thru a grief stricken nightmare that will haunt him for as long as he, himself, lives.But it is a nightmare that could have been avoided.Why was Flash left, alone, in a locked cruiser with the air running Why was he not with his partner officer in police headquarters Why do we see recreational vehicles on dog show grounds left for hours,whilst handlers show dogs, and depend on air units that malfunction and hear of show dogs who die in Flashs fashion Why do we see people leave their vehicle for that proverbial momentBecause we are human, and we err.There are some things we cannot control. Every time I leave my house on these hot, muggy days, I set the air conditioner temperature control and figure the dogs and resident cat will be safe. But a sudden storm with a lightning bolt can knock out the air unit or the electricity provided by the electrical company I could come home to heat-exposure deaths. This is a risk we all must take.But we do not have to risk our beloved animal partners in a police cruiser, a show RV while we take hours away to handle dogs in the ring, or in a car while we run inside a storefor a moment........ to not err inthis situation we must be constantly reminding ourselves of the dangerous effects of the summer heat.And before ending the subject, I have been listening to Bemie, who has been observing dog owners exercising their dogs on hot pavements or hot roads. The owners have shoes on their feet, or are riding bicycles. Exercising dogs is great. While I was in Albany, my sister, Suzanne, asked me to recommend a breed for her next dog. I emphatically endorsed the Chesapeake Bay Retriever and she purchased a lovely Chessie bitch who was to become the dam of my CBR, Ch. Chesmates King of Dimonde, CGC aka Caleb and Ditz Doggie.After moving back to the DC area and taking up residence in my new town- house in Germantown, MD down the block from Suzanne and across the street from my brother Christopher, my mother took me on a jaunt to Richmond to meet Dr. Morris Carson and his lovely wife, Betty, of Emcee Pomeranians. Mother had been adopting Dr. Carsons retirees for several years and it was on that visit that I unexpectedly acquired my first Pomeranian, DMDs British Red Coat, CGC Brit. Not knowing anything about the metamorphosis of Pom puppies to Pom adults, I thought the reason Dr. Carson wanted to get rid of four- month-old Brit was because he was so ugly I fell in love with his personality if not his looks and was astounded to see him slowly turn into a dog every bit as lovely as those many champions running around Morris and Bettys back yard.Being competitive by nature, I asked Morris to enter Brit and I in a dog show Morris forgot to mention matches. Our first show was, well, embarrassing to say the least. Not being one to quit with egg on my face, I hit the books and asked questions of everyone I met at each successive event. I started applying all that I had been taught and had taught to my own riding students about showmanship, and soon started feeling much more confident in the dog show ring. I couldnt have asked for a better dog to start with. Every inch of Brit exudedshowmanship Having a dog which would stop perfectly stacked and stand alertly until asked to move gave me the opportunity to hone my handling skills in the ring rather than fussing with an uncooperative dog.Around this time, I decided I should come up with a kennel name which would suit AKC registration rules. Suzy also needed a kennel name. I came up with Chesmate for Suzy and it was Chris who came up with my kennel name, Dimonde. I had said that I wanted to play on the word diamond, since it not only evoked a picture of quality, but also because Brit came from along line of Emcee diamonds Ch. Chip of Diamond, Ch. Emcees Chips of Diamond, Ch Emcees A Chip of Diamond, etc....Chris suggested using Di the diminutive for Diana and monde, which is French for world. Thus Dimonde is not only a play on words, loosely translated it means Dianas world. It is pronounced dye-moe-nd.In May of 1988, Morris asked me to co-own Emcees Simplemente Miel with him. She had recently been returned to him and he had found that this lovely multiple group placing bitch in Canada, who only needed 2 points to finish there, had become incredibly shy. She needed someone who could give her more attention than he could. A year later I was very proud when she progressed to the point where she only ran halfway up my stairs before stopping to bark at a stranger entering my house. This February, I entered Miel, now 11 years old, in the veterans bitch class at the National Specialty. You can imagine how I felt to see this lovely lady actually revel in the applause as she captured the first in her class and was retained by Mrs. Clark for BOB consideration. Miel has come a long way since I first met her and as far as Im concerned, was my first rescue.Of course, having a male and a female led to the inevitable I bred them. In November of 1988, Dimonde Solitaire of Emcee Lita, pronounced lee-ta was bom in my kitchen. My sister-in-law, Palma, suggested calling her Lita because of the letters in the middle of solitaire and because it went well with little.Litas show career was very short as it became evident that this incredibly sound, excellent moving bitch was not going to be either small enough or pretty enough to finish easily. She would be much more valuable to me as a brood. Little Lita, my first home-bred, went on to become the APC Top Producing Dam in 1993. She is also about to become my first ROM.Probably the best advice about breeding anyone ever gave me came from Dr. Carson. Diana, he said, the easiest thing to breed for is coat. Ive tried to keep that golden advice in mind when choosing studs. If a dog isnt a good mover, has anything other than a scissors bite, has poor pigment or improper coat texture Ill keep looking. I never let a show record judge a dog for me, nor do I believe that a picture is worth a thousand words. Coat quantity is the last on my list of desirable traits in a Pom. A thinner coat with good texture will always look better than a soft thick coat. But, if the overall quality of the dog is lacking, then the whole picture suffers.Litas first breeding was to a lovely dog bred by Morris, Ch. Emcees Golden Sea Raider. Her first puppy, weighing 7.5 oz., was free-whelped breech. Unfortunately, this puppy did not survive. Her next mating, in 1990, was to the dog that I had watched go BOB from the classes at my first show, BIS at the 1988 Westminster K.C. show and BISS at the National Summer Specialty hosted byE A D E R VI I T Sthe Pomeranian Club of Greater Baltimore, Ch. Emcees Hy Lady Morganna to RWB for her owner Beverly Poplar that I first met Dave and Melissa Dahlenburg. We all ended up at the same table during the banquet and Melissa told Bev that she was going to have to pull Rocky now Ch. Elans Fireworks from the supported entries at the two shows following the specialties as his handler would be unavailable. Bev suggested that Melissa and Dave allow me to show Rocky, which I did he went RWD at the first of the two shows. Melissa and Dave then asked if I would show Rockys littermate for them. They opened the crate door and my jaw dropped. One of the best poms Ive ever seen, Rascal Ch. Elans Inferno, stepped out of the crate. Standing before me was a beautiful, heavy coated, harsh textured puppy with excellent layback that reflected both elegance and pride in his very being. And when he moved Straight as an arrow front and rear with good reach and powerful drive, every step covering ground without ever over-striding I handled him to his championship, the first for an Elan Pom, going multi-BOB over specials along the way. I told Melissa that I wanted a puppy of Rascals and in July of 1991 she presented me with a lovely heavy orange sable bitch named Ella Ch. Elans Infinity.Rascal was also the next dog that I bred Lita to, producing Ch. Dimondes Hot Rock Elvis - finished with 3 majors, Ch. Dimondes Saf-Fire Roz - multi- BOS over specials, and Dimondes Gem Fire Bob. Bob is working on his CD title which I hope to finish before returning him to the breed ring.I entered Ella for two shows in November of 1991 where she took her first points. Her next show was the 1992 National Specialty in New York where she gained a large circle of admirers. By May she had not only completed her championship multi-BOB over specials from the puppy class, she had become the 1 Pom bitch in all-breed points and 2 in breed points she was 2 pointsbehind the National Specialty winner. She was then retired for the year so that she could be bred I owed Melissa a puppy back, but still finished the year 2 Pom bitch in all-breed points and 3 in breed points. I have shown Ella on a few occasions in the past few years and she has added several more BOBs to her collection. Right now, her most important job is as surrogate mother she does the cleaning and warming, I do the feeding to the sole survivor of an abandoned Chessie litter, named Power Tugboats Power Kick. Mother and son are doing well and Im anticipating side-by- side win pictures at Westminster some day.Another excellent dog which I was to come across was a Rocky son, Bonjovi Am. Can. Ch. Subers Blaze of Glory. I asked his breederowner Sue Bemey if I could handle him after watching him go RWD at a couple of shows. I was convinced he could do better if his mischievous nature could be controlled. After I had put his first points, first major, first BOB over specials, and first group placement group 2 on him, Sue decided to breed Bon Jovis dam to my Ollie. By this time Morris was pushing me to seriously show Ollie after he went BPIM at a Richmond match. Sue now added her voice to Morris, saying that she wanted to put a Ch. in front of his name by the time she had to fill out the litter application from the breeding. I told her I couldnt, as I was showing her Jovi. She told me to finish Jovis entries and then get Ollie in the ring.Ollie went BOB over specials at the first show I entered him in and finished multi-BOB over specials. Somewhere along the way he acquired the title of the Prince son as everywhere I went with him people would come up to me and ask if he was the Prince son that theyd been hearing about. The consensus of opinion was that he was the best that Prince had ever produced. Of course, I agree with them. Although I finished and pointed several Poms and Chessies by this time, Ollie was the first dog of my breeding to complete his championship.The weekend after I finished Ella, Melissa Dahlenburg asked me to handle another spectacular bitch, named Garbo. D.J. and Wendy produced Wenona Dimondes Wicked Wenona who is major pointed and Juanita Dimondes Wicked Juanita whom I coown with Regina and Robert Nunn.Prior to whelping Gears and Tranny, I had bred Jewel to Bob. This produced Ziggie Dimondes Zircon Crown Gem who is owned byjerusha Gurvin, Bobs obedience trainer. Karin Maida, Jerusha and I hope to complete both bench and obedience titles on Bob, Ziggie and Sparkle.Ive heard it said that show Poms do not make good obedience Poms. Its been said that the patellas on show Poms are not as good as those on pet Poms. When youve handled as many pet Poms as I have, through the auspices of my rescue work, youll know for a fact how untrue that statement is. As Karin has pointed out, a good moving dog looks much more fluid during heel work, and will usually stand up to the physical pressures of jumping, much better than a poor moving dog. Conformation should be every bit as important to the obedience dog as it is to the bench dog. Bob only knew how to walk on a lead and pose before Jerusha whisked him away for training at the age of four. Punky was a five-year-old rescue Pom which Karin adopted who didnt know how to walk on a lead and was not housebroken. You should see them now In three months under Karins tutelage, Punky went third in trial at last years summer specialty and is perfectly house trained. Bobs onlyshortcomings are his handlers thats me. Obedience is very mentally challenging and Ive learned a lot from Karin and Jerusha...but Bobs way ahead of me.Several years ago Judy Shearer, hearing that I tracked Pom points, asked if I would tally the APC points for Top Show Dog and Top Show Bitch. As of last year, I am also calculating Top Breeder, Top Sire and Top Dam. I hope to one day have enough spare time to write my own program to do this so that I can provide ongoing statistics throughout the year. Currently, I am using a program which was written for another purpose, and must calculate the totals for all Poms by hand. Since this is an unwieldy task to do regularly and it gets worse as the year progresses and more Poms are added, I only tabulate these results at the end of the year.Also several years ago, I took over as club coordinator for the PCGBs rescue program. In 1995 I volunteered to be the APC National Rescue Coordinator, attempting to direct those looking for a local rescue group to the right people. I have lost track of how many Poms I have personally adopted out but its not the numbers that count its the results.I will always be indebted to my mother for introducing me to the Carsons and to the Carsons for providing me with the excellent breeding stock which became the foundation upon which I have built my kennel. Her teachings have been especially helpful to me in judging dogs. Being a horse person firstmost, I believe that soundness is primary when judging a dog. Next I look for good movement, type, and suitability to purpose. Ive always been amazed at how many dog people equate soundness with good movement. He has a soft, dense undercoat with a profuse harsh-textured outer coat. His heavily plumed tail is set high and lies flat on his back. He is alert in character, exhibits intelligence in expression, is buoyant in deportment, and is inquisitive by nature. The Pomeranian is cocky, commanding, and animated as he gaits. He is sound in composition and action.SIZE, PROPORTION, SUBSTANCE The average weight of the Pomeranian is from 3 to 7 pounds, with the ideal weight for the show specimen being 4 to 6 pounds. Any dog over or under the limits is objectionable. However, overall quality is to be favored over size. The distance from the point of shoulder to the point of buttocks is slightly shorter than from the highest point of the withers to the ground. The distance from the brisket to the ground is half the height at the withers. He is medium boned, and the length of his legs is in proportion to a well-balanced frame. When examined, he feels sturdy.HEAD The Head is in balance with the body. The muzzle is rather short, straight, fine, free of lippiness and never snipy. His expression is alert and may be referred to as foxlike. The skull is closed. The top of the skull is slightly rounded, but not domed. When viewed from the front and side, one sees small ears which are mounted high and carried erect. To form a wedge, visualize a line from the tip of the nose ascending through the center of the eyes and the tip of the ears. The eyes are dark, bright, medium in size and almond shaped. They are set well into the skull on either side of a well- pronounced stop. The pigmentation is black on the nose and eye rims except self-colored in brown, beaver, and blue dogs. The teeth meet in a scissors bite. One tooth out of alignment is acceptable. Major faults Round, domed skull Undershot mouth Overshot mouth.NECK, TOPLINE, BODY - The neck is short with its base set well into theshoulders to allow the head to be carried high. The back is short with level topline. The body is compact and well ribbed with the brisket reaching the elbow. The plumed tail is one of the characteristics of the breed, and lies flat and straight on the back.FOREQUARTERS - The Pomeranian has sufficient layback of shoulders to carry the neck and head proud and high. The shoulders and legs are moderately muscled. The length of the shoulder blade and upper arm are equal. The forelegs are straight and parallel to each other. Height from elbows to withers approximately equals height from the ground to elbow. The pasterns are straight and strong. Thefeet are well- arched, compact, and turn neither in nor out. He stands well up on his toes. Dewclaws may be removed.Major Fault Down in pasterns.HINDQUARTERS - The angulation of the hindquarters balances that of the forequarters. The buttocks are well behind the set of the tail. The thighs are moderately muscled with stifles that are moderately bent and clearly defined. The hocks are perpendicular to the ground and the legs are straight and parallel to each other. Th efeet are well-arched, compact, and turn neither in nor out. He stands well up on his toes. Dewclaws if any, on the hind legs may be removed. Major Faults Cowhocks or lack of soundness in hind legs or stifles.GAIT - The Pomeranians gait is smooth, free, balanced and vigorous. He has good reach in his forequarters and strong drive with his hindquarters. Each rear leg moves in line with the foreleg on the same side. To achieve balance, his legs converge slightly inward toward a center line beneath his body. The rear and front legs are thrown neither in nor out. The topline remains level, and his overall balance and outline are maintained.COAT - A Pomeranian is noted for its double coat. The undercoat is soft and dense. The outercoat is long, straight, glistening, and harsh in texture. A thickundercoat will hold up and permit the guard hair to stand off from the Pomeranians body. The coat is abundant from the neck and fore part of shoulders and chest, forming a frill which extends over the shoulders and chest. The head and leg coat is tightly packed and shorter in length than that of the body. The forequarters are well-feathered and thighs and hind legs well-feathered to the hock. The tail is profusely covered with long, harsh, spreading straight hair. Trimming for neatness and a clean outline is permissible.Major Faults Soft, flat or open coat.COLOR - All colors, patterns, and variations thereof are allowed and must be judged on an equal basis. Patterns Black and Tan - tan or rust sharply defined, appearing above each eye and on muzzle, throat, and forechest, on all legs and feet and below the tail. The richer the tan the more desirable Brindle - the base color is gold, red, or orange brindled with strong black cross stripes Parti- color - is white with any other color distributed in patches with a white blaze preferred on the head. Classifications The Open Classes at specialty shows may be divided by color as followsOpen Red, Orange, Cream, and Sable Open Black, Brown, and Blue Open Any Other Color. Pattern, or Variation. But dogs, like humans, have health problems. While many are similar to ours, like cancer and arthritis, others are unique to their species and some are more frequently found in certain breeds. Until now the available funding to resolve these problems was scarce and sporadic. The AKC Canine Health Foundation is the first major national foundation focused exclusively on resolving important health and genetic issues in dogs. Through the support of the AKC, tests have been developed in two breeds for important diseases copper toxicosis and PRA. But there are many more diseases and many more breeds that need help.FIRST GRANT The AKC Canine Health Foundation made its first grant in September 1995 to the Center for Companion and Animal Health at the University of California at Davis for support of an international seminar on thyroid and autoimmune disorders. Among the successful applicants are eleven of the leading research institutions in the nation including Baker Institute at Cornell University, Texas A M University, University of California at Berkeley and Davis, University of Pennsylvania, University of Wisconsin and the National Cancer Institute.Awarding of the grants for research about specific diseases was based upon scientific merit and established significance of the disease in dogs. The review process involved 51 scientists from over 20 universities and veterinary schools in the U.S. and Canada. Grants for research about specific breeds was also based on scientific merit and significance in a particular breed as identified by scientists and the parent club. Dr. Robert J. Hritzo, President of the AKC Canine Health Foundation noted, This is one of the largest single distributions of funds to support canine health and the largest ever for canine genetic research. Funds will support research projects focused on a wide range of diseases that affect dogs, including seven research grants for canine bloat, kidney disorders, progressive retinal atrophy, cystinuria, and epilepsy. In addition to funds from the American Kennel Club, all-breed clubs, regional breed and performance clubs and individual contributors, a dozen breed clubs have indicated they will support designatedresearch projects. These national breed clubs include the Akita Club of America, the Alaskan Malamute Club of America, the American Bloodhound Club, the Collie Club of America, the English Cocker Club of America, the Keeshond Club of America, the Irish Setter Club of America, the Irish Wolfhound Club of America, the Rottweiler Club of America, the Weimaraner Club of America and the Whippet Club of America. Another set of five grants were made to research centers for mapping the canine genome. Dr. Hritzo stated that, While progress has been made in genetic mapping in human, mice, poultry, cattle and swine, the canine genome has remained relatively undeveloped. These grants will help us to make substantial progress in mapping the canine genome and subsequently in identifying genes and mutations that cause genetic diseases in dogs. Canine health education was an additional focus of the grants. Two grants were made in this area. A grant to the University of California, Davis, Center for Companion Animal Health will support an international symposium on canine hypothyroidism. A second grant to Dr. Patricia Wilkie at the University of Minnesota will sponsor the development of a reference source for dog breeders on canine genetics.The list of awards also includes three grants that were approved but not funded. The Board of Directors needed to set priorities. The reviewers identified several worthy research projects but the funds simply ran out, noted Executive Director, Deborah A. Lynch. We hope in our fundraising efforts this year to raise significant dollars fromclubs and individuals - so that we will be able to fund all of the excellent projects that will advance canine health.The review process utilized by the Foundation focused on independent review. In this process three reviewers were identified for each grant.Reviewers were research specific and required to be working in the areas addressed by a given proposal. Because reviews were detailed, each reviewer was limited to three proposals.
