It is a time of year for both reflection of events past and hopefulness of things future. That applies toAPC as well.As this Issues writing deadline, the Board has received the reports from the special committees formedlast spring. We are therefore in the review and discussion phase before any action is taken. We also havereceived data from your returned surveys. A separate report on these will be issued to the membership. It was an honor and a privilege for me to serve as president these past two years. I wouldnt haveconsidered it without the very strong team working together to provide all the necessary functions ofthe Club. I thank those who offered their knowledge and help.Taking office, I had envisioned some projects I would have liked APC to address. Did we get to all ofthem No. Why Life happens. Every president has had his or her challenge to address. Im referringto the ones you dont plan on things that consume time and effort but must receive priority above whatyou might have liked to accomplish. In the past, as examples, leaders had to confront finding a Revieweditor or avoiding bankruptcy. This club is fortunate to have a long history. I now realize, accept, and respect that each term hadleadership that strived to help both the breed and the Club. Each faced his or her challenges. The Clubsurvived their handicaps and benefited from their efforts. For whatever reason, my term started, ended, and had the middle addressing complaints of members vs.other members, some necessitating a disciplinary hearing. This is the responsibility that was handed meand is not one that I would have chosen. What projects would I like this parent club to address The education of both its breeders and judgesneeds to be further developed. What programs would help new people get started in this breedInformation on our website needs further expansion. There are issues in our Breed Standard that needto be addressed. What can I doDoggie breath can range from mildly annoying to severely offensive. Tooth decay andor gum disease is aleading cause. The following suggestions can help1 Give puppies toys early. If they get in the habit of chewing on toys, they will keep their teeth much cleaner.Make sure any toys given do not have small pieces that could be chewed off and choked on.2 Feed a premium dry food as much as possible. Canned food, low-quality foods that contain sugar, and manycommercially prepared doggie treats promote tooth decay. If you want to give treats, you can boil liver or beefheart, cut it into small pieces, and keep it in a Zip Loc type baggie in the freezer. Your liver or beef heart will lastseveral months in a freezer baggie. You can also give small bits of cheese as treats.3 Give marrow bones often. Beef femur cut into 1" slices at the butcher. Be sure there are no sharp, edges andboil to eliminate germs before giving. You can also offer things like chew toys, chew hooves, rawhide chews, andpig ears.4 If your Poms teeth have a lot of tartar or severe decay, they should be professionally cleaned or extracted byyour veterinarian. After a professional cleaning, you can scale them yourself every month or so to keep themclean. Some people like to use a doggie toothbrush and toothpaste to clean their dogs teeth each day. Otheralternatives to a toothbrush are gauze or a finger brush. Dental instruments for scaling and dog toothbrushestoothpaste are available from most pet supply catalogues.Poor GI gastrointestinal health due to a faulty diet, stress, or disease is another leading cause of bad breath. The following supplements can help tremendously in this case1 High potency probiotic beneficial bacteria2 Digestive enzymes3 Green Super Foods such as spirulina, alfalfa and barley grass, wheat grassOur question for the next issue is What herbs can I safely use on my PomYou may direct new questions or answers to these questions toAnnette Davis391 N Mink Creek Rd., Pocatello ID 83204208-234-0932, FAX 208-234-0792, e-mail infoavalonpom.comPrevious Ask Us Anything Columns may be viewed on line www.avalonpom.comPomCare.htm2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10122006, 502 AM26- sap-vV Vi V I Ar i i m i n4 44NovDec 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 27gAKC DelegateReport Darrell BakerAKC DELEGATE REPORT ... SEPTEMBER MEETINGI was unable to attend the September meeting but was kept informed of all actions, and it is important thatI let membership be made aware of AKC actions. In a period of just a few days, things developed rather quickly. Basically, at the September meeting, aBoard Decision was made not a Delegates involvement but a legal decision to approve a program toallow Petland to facilitate individual AKC registration for eligible dogs sold in their stores. Prior to this, many of these dogs were registered to other registries, or not at all. Many questions emerged followingthat announcement. For many years AKC has not involved itself in such registrations, in pet shops, mallshops, etc. This decision by the Board was primarily due to reduced income from registrations, a move to try to offsetthe loss of income understandably.Across the country, Delegates and Clubs expressed their total disdain for this action, and muchcorrespondence took place across the country, with Clubs, Delegates, etc. The final outcome was thatAKC reversed their action on this matter, a very good move according to most all Delegates of all Clubs.Quoting September 28th message from Mr. Ron Menaker, Chairman of the Board, and Mr. Dennis Sprung,President and CEO, In the past few weeks we have received many comments about this agreement, bothpositive and negative. We have listened to the concerns and because this issue has become so divisive, webelieve it is in the best interest of our sport and the American Kennel Club NOT to go forward with thisinitiative. Thus, the American Pomeranian Club, along with many breed clubs nationwide, should not NOW concernourselves with this situation. Basically, it is over. I just wanted to keep everyone informed of what almostoccurred but was halted, something we in the American Pomeranian Club would have obviously protestedvigorously.I will be in attendance at the December 2006 meeting in California. My name is Leanne Wilkins of TeraLeePomeranians. I share my home with one oversizedhusband, two very old cranky cats, one young kittenand a houseful of Pomeranians. I do not run akennel. I am a small hobby breeder who hopes tobreed beautiful, sound Pomeranians. I have beenbreeding and showing for about eight years now. Idont breed a lot of litters.I started in Shetland Sheepdogs with my mother when Iwas 21 years old after attending my first dog show. Thatwas it. I had the bug I wanted and needed a dog to show. Our first show dog was a beautiful blue merle Sheltie thatwas my moms dog. I would help with the grooming, training, and breeding, but not the showing as that was for the professionalhandlers. Sometimes I got a little frustrated. Mind you, professionalhandlers know their job and do it well, but I wanted to be at the end of that lead. So as it turned out, a friend ofmy mother and me, Donna Majewski, introduced me to Joan Rogenski at a fun match, who bred Poms. Donnalater came to own my PJ, AMCan Ch. Shylo Farms Park Place, who in his day was the 2 Sheltie in the country. That was no small feat for a blue merle in those days.At the time Joan did not like to show, so she had asked me to show a little red sable boy for her. I was thrilledfor the ring time Jeremy had other ideas about a stranger showing him. After Jeremy did his best not to showfor me, I stepped out of the ring and told Joan that, if she ever decided to place Jeremy I would love to have him. There was just something special about him. I was Joans third choice for a home, as I had never owned a toybreed before. She wasnt sure how he would be in a houseful of Shelties, but fate stepped in, and he was to bemine Libbys Touch of Fudge By Mia lovingly known as Jeremy was my first Pom and show dog. I found inhim what I was missing in Shelties. Poms are an in-your-face breed that is rarely afraid of anything, and theygive their whole heart to you.In Jeremys lifetime, owner handled, he and I managed to earn eleven points and one five point major. He tookthat major going over two very nice champions for Best of Breed. I lost him at an early age to an illness. Jeremywas not just my show dog but my constant companion and best friend. Needless tosay, the loss of such a wonderful dogset me back. I decided to no longerbreed and show. I wasafraid my heart couldnt bear the loss.My husband just shook his head andlaughed at that statement and said that Iwould return to the ring with a Pomsomeday.Three years after the passing of Jeremycame along the wonderful gift of theInternet, and I surfed to my heartscontent. I viewed some wonderful webpages with some stunning Pomeranians.I began to get the bug again. They saidthat there was no cure. I came acrossthe web pages of Sandy Shaneyfelt ofSouthpaw Pomeranians. I fell in lovewith her Pommie babies. Little did Iknow that Sandy would become mymentor, very good friend, and the twoleggedbirth mother to my littlePommies. I drove this woman insaneand still do while trying to decidewhether or not I wanted to get my heartinvolved with another show dog. Alongcame Southpaw Lil Man of TeraleeDustin. Dustin lives to be in the ringand has points but he was never meantto finish. You will never find a gentlerwonderful dog with the heart of a lionthat can be alpha one minute and agentle, tender father the next. Heturned out being not what I expected ina show dog, but rather than place himas a pet he keeps all my others in lineand raises all the babies that are born inthis house whether they are his or not.Shortly after getting Dustin, myhusband and I bought a home on threeand a half acres of land in GoffstownNH. It allstarted a long time age. Sound familiarThe Bay Colony Pomeranian Club in pastyears had held an AKC sanctioned matchin the fall to meet the AKC requirementsof holding their specialty. We had found inthe past finding sites to hold this functionwas very difficult, and like most clubs weheld raffles and costume contests to helpfund activities for the club. When wemoved our show to have it with the toycluster during the Memorial Day Weekendwe also moved the match. So we decidedthat we would like to have a day where wecould all get together, let our hair downand just enjoy each others company andour dogs. Last year thanks to a club member wewere blessed to find a place that would rentout her site to us at a very reasonable rateand a big plus was she was also aPomeranian owner Last years event wascalled the pom picnic and through trial anderror we found out what should be plannedand what shouldnt. This was opened toeveryone. Show, obedience, rally, Agility, pet people and their poms and we alsoinvited people who were looking for pomand just needed to meet the dogs and talkto some of the breeders. It was a success This years event was called the Bedand Barkfest where we asked each memberto bring a bed and either dog foodcookiesor canned food for the raffle table, thoughno items that members would like to donatewould be refused. We also asked membersto bring a dish for the pot luck lunch, andlet me tell you we had more than enoughfood to feed an army Originally, we were going to ask for5.00 per person at the door, but with theconfusion of everyone coming in and outwe couldnt keep track so instead we askedeveryone to buy 5.00 in raffle tickets. Thisyear we held a second match and askedBarbara Young from Jabil Pomeranians tojudge and it was open to all dogs. Noofficial rules as we held our regular matchin May. We had 10 entries this year anddid not take any entry fee. We had awonderful turnout of puppies which ourjudge commented on as in the past usuallythere were no pups to judge. We also hada costume contest where taking our cuefrom the Nationals we had bribe thejudge This year my husband officiated asthe judge. We had some great costumes. We also had a grooming seminar run byJan Stachurski which I have to say had agreat turnout for. He had kindly offered todo it and took the time to make littlebooklets for everyone to take home andanswered any questions thanks sweetie.Because The Bay Colony PomeranianClub covers the Northeast which makes itdifficult for members to get to meetings. As a result, people looking to becomemembers have a difficult time making therequirements to attend two meetings. Sowe have officially decided that we wouldhold a meeting at the Bed and Barkfest anda second and third meetings to be held atdog shows to help increase availability ofgetting to those meetings. By the end of the day both dogs andhumans were all tuckered out I dont knowabout anyone else but I had a very quietride home as all my babies and husbandwere sound asleep within 15 minutes ofbeing in the car, and from what I amhearing from members and non-membersthat attended this years Bed and Barkfestit was again a huge success. At this time Ihave no official report of how much moneythe raffle table took in but it was rumoredto be very high All in all I am hoping thatas the years go on our fun day will continueto grow. Aristicwas founded in 1926, and operated outof San Antonio, Texas, by Isidore andGladys Schoenberg. Isidore was a popularall-breed judge. The Aristic name is wayback behind most of todays bestpedigrees. Aristic was started based onoutstanding show winners of the day, suchas Ch. Woodfield Diamond King, SunCherub of England, Ch. Sealand Career, and Ch. Sealand Moneybox.Their line became known for compactbody, huge coat, and wedge-shapedmuzzle. They were successful incorrecting the large eyes and ears soprevalent at that time. Some of their mostfamous dogs were their multi-BISwinners, Ch.Aristic Wee Sensation,Ch.Aristic Wee Pepper Pod, Ch.AristicMoneybox Gold Button, and Ch. AristicGold Trinket.Ch.Aristic Wee Pepper Pod was also thesire of Ch. Aristic Little Pepper Pod, whowas also a BIS winner and found in manypedigrees. Many kennels of the day werefounded on the Aristic line.In the late Sixties, I had a trip planned toSan Antonio, Texas. A friend of mine, Dr.William Bill Fields, lived in SanAntonio. Bill was a judge, primarily oftoy and nonsporting breeds. He oftenvisited Fern Rodrigues Sunray when hecame to California and became a friendof mine also.I called Bill to see if he could set up avisit to the Aristic kennel for me. I wasexcited when he called me back to tell methat it was all arranged Bill picked meup at the airport and we headed straightto Gladys and Isidore Schoenbergs home. When we arrived, the Schoenbergsgreeted us very warmly. Isidore owned amens store, and I was accustomed toseeing him in tailor-made suits. His tieswere always conversation pieces Seeinghim wearing casual clothes that day tooksome getting used to The Schoenbergshad comfortable accommodations fortheir dogs. They even had air conditioningfor them....a real luxury back then. The Aristic InfluenceBy Arthur Davison, Joarts PomeraniansWe chatted a bit, and then Gladys askedus what we wanted to see first. She saidher mothers with puppies were off limits, which of course I understood. There wereso many beautiful dogs Most of them hadgreat legs and good bone. They also hadcoats to die for One thing that really stoodout was the nice head coat even on thefemales this wasnt common then Thestandard back then stated that hair onthe head and face must be short or smoothcoated.I have often thought that whenwe talk about coat length in our standard,we could add the phrase approximately3-4 inches in length or something likethat. Some other breeds have standardswhich specify the coat length.Another thing that caught my eye was thelarger size and good bone of most of theAristic dogs. Many of the Aristic broodswere larger, some as large as maybe tenpounds or more. When I asked about it,Gladys replied that that was the Dromoreinfluence American Ernest Sharlandcreated the Dromore line, using Pomona,Ashburn, and Fairfax dogs. Also, if you were a personfrom the U.S., the price went up Dickmight stop by one of the big kennels. Ifhe saw, say, a red sable female that heliked, he might inquire and get a pricequote. Then, a few days later, he wouldsend a local friend who would ask, Whatdo you have available in a red sablebitch If the price came downconsiderably, the friend would buy her forDick. Dick also bought a lot of dogs fromthe smaller breeders, so they worked withhim They even hunted other breeds forhim,-sending him pictures, etc. He toldme he had to be careful what he bought, because when he got them to the U.S.,his customers might sometimes refuse totake the dog. He brought a BrusselsGriffon over and the buyer refused thedog. But Dick had the last laugh becausethe dog was several times B.I.S. Hisname was Ollie, and he was the sire ofmany champions. This was the atmosphere in the 50s and60s and even into the 1970s. Being anall-breed judge, Isidore traveled all overthe U.S. and to other countries. He wasable to see the best dogs including theEnglish imports. The Schoenbergs usedthis to their advantage. If Isidore saw adog he wanted to breed to, they wouldmake arrangements and Gladys wouldsend two or three different bitches to bebred to him. They hoped to get severalpuppies to pick from that way. She saidthey culled hard, keeping only the best.Gladys also said she would be demandingof her breeding stock, keeping only thebest performers and easy whelpers. TheSchoenbergs had the desire, drive, andfinancial resources to accomplish theirgoals...no small taskThis pedigree will give you an idea ofsome of the dogs they used and theirmethod.Another important factor at that time wasour US breed standard. So much winningwas done by English imports, that theclass American Bred was added to theAKC shows, just to give our homebreddogs a chance to win some blue ribbonsNearly all countries were importing dogsfrom England, and the U.S. wasnt anydifferent. From all over the world, breeders were importing dogs fromEngland, and paying big dollars for them.Good dogs were priced out of the marketfor many of our U.S. breeders.Helen Norwicki, of Gold BlackacreKennels located in Chicago, was one ofthe main importers of Poms to the U.S.from England. She kept some imports, others she bred some of her dogs to andthen sold them. The rest, she soldimmediately while retaining breedingrights.Another gentleman, Richard Dick Ball, went to England three or four times a yearlooking for good dogs. He liked to goduring Crufts, when there were hundredsof the breeds there He would go abouttwo weeks before, and stay three or fourweeks afterwards, visiting kennels to seemore of what he liked at Crufts. BrusselsGriffon was his main breed, but hebranched out to other breeds. If Dick wanted a dog out of a certain studdog, he would have a smaller breederbreed to that dog or kennel. He would evenpay for the stud fee These breeders didntcare, they made good money for theirpuppies. The big kennels had gotten soexpensive that the average person couldntimporting their dogs, we imported theirstandard as well In 1960, we droppedthe point system and changed the bitespecification from level to scissors.Nearly all dogs had big, round or ovaleyes during this period. The standardstated that eyes should be medium in size, and set oblique. We did not change thestandard to specify almond eyes until1980.Isidore worked with a neighbor of mine,Marvin Latham, who owned Top Flightkennel in El Monte, California. The Cityof Angels Pomeranian Club held theirearly meetings there. Dro- more Bombardiers death in October, took the two top-producing stud dogs from the current scene. Timmy, at the time of his death, was the greatest living sire. As of this date, he has sired more champions as an owner-breeder stud dog than any to date in America. Overall, he stands a close third to Bombardier and Ch. Sealand Moneybox in the number of champions sired. Timmys total is 16, but there are more on the way. The 16 champions are Great Elms Little Timsun, Great Elms Buster, Great Elms Honey Bun, Great Elms Little Doodle, Great Elms Little Debby, Majack Sugar Plum, Scotts Honey Bunch, Great Elms Rumples Tom Thumb, Dixie Flame of Thelco- lynn, Scotts Joyous Sensation, Great Elms Gay Linda, Scotts Little Top Man, Great Elms Little Rose, Miss Spice OLife, Great Elms Vixi O Timber Acres, and Le Mays Fanciful Miss.1POM OBITUARIESAm. Can. Ch. Golden Glow Dandy. "Dandy, with his illustrious sire, Ch. Dromore Bombardier, was our Cover Pom for the December 1858 Review. Breeder-owner, Mrs. Elva U. McGilbry, writes Dandy passed away the last day of 1961. He had been feeling very wellvery alert, good hearing, good eyesight, etc. He lived with me in the grooming room of the kennel where I spent much of my time. When outdoors he would enjoy kicking up his heels near his favorite trees. There was no sign of illness. He just went to sleep. I am glad he went that way, as Dandy was very close to my heart. I have never loved a dog more dearly than he. He always responded with just as much love for me, too. He never let me down at a show. He was the greatest of showoffs in the ring. Dandy was born in May of 1948. Dandy is placed in a grave beside his sire Bombardier at Columbia River Kls. here in Kennewick. In the kennel now I have just two Bombardier children leftone male champion, Sonnie, and one matron, Dolly.I think Dandys show record was great, too. I started him out at 8 mos. of age and in his first three American shows he won groups and BIS in three States Ore., Wash., Calif., for 15 points in three shows. Then to Canada for more BIS and his Canadian championship in 4 shows in 4 days. I retired Dandy from the showring on his fourth birthday with a BIS win at Yakima, Wash. Dandy was shown 29 times, he had 28 BB, and 1 BW for 5 pts..We add that Dandy was 19 times best toy, and 6 times BIS all breeds. As a sire, he produced some exceedingly beautiful, sweet offspring of whom at least eight gained their championships, and these offspring have in turn passed on Dandys qualities. Dandy paved the way for Pom popularity in the Pacific Northwest.Eng. Ch. Zambo of Zanow was our cover Pom for the September 1960 Review back copies available. Zambo also died last year and was in good fettle until then. He was born in August 1952, and like Dandy, was the darling of his owners heart throughout his lifetime. He was bred and owned by Mrs. Isabel Butler of Malton, Yorkshire, England. Zambo was the sire of 12 champions in England and the United States. His services were highly desired because of the wonderful stylishness, type, and expressions he pased on to his progeny, and these offspring are well represented throughout the fancy in England and also in South Africa and the United States. Of the seven champions made in England last year, he was sire of 1, great grandsire of 2, and great-great grandsire of another. Two of the new champions sired by Ch. Pixietown Serenade of Hadleigh owe much to their dams, who were daughters of Zambo. His passing represents the loss of another of the great stud dogs in the last decade.1I' \m1Ch. The breeder quickly taught us the differencebetween a pet and a show animal. A month later we happened to attend an American Kennel Club dog show. We were truly hooked for life when wesaw the Pomeranians being shown. We bought a beautiful black and tan female from a good breeder with an outstanding pedigree. We knew she was special. It was not an easy task fora novice to win with a black and tan. We showed her ourselves and finished her championship very quickly. From there on we won our first American Pomeranian National in 1992 with Ch. Starfires Totally Tempting. Ch. Starfires Totally Tempting was alsoour first dog to win an All Breed Best In Show. This was the beginning of great things to come.As of today we hold the record with great pride for the most Best In Show National wins eight times in the history of the breed. We have also wonmultiple BISA, winners bitch at Nationals seven times, multiple breeds and group placements at Westminster Kennel Club, multiple wins and groupplacements in the last three years at the Eukanuba Championship Show, multiple Specialties and Regional winners. One of the latest stars for Starfires is Ch. Starfires Wicked Mean N Nasty owned by Captain Jean Heath, Dr. William Cosby and us. He was handledby Mr. Bill Mc Fadden, who together captivated audiences from all over the world starting at the Westminster Kennel Club in 2004. There he stoodin front of the judge and the crowd went wild. After that show he won 23 All Breed BIS and his second National Win.Another great moment for our kennel was in March 2005 at the American Pomeranian Club. Our dream became reality, setting another record, bywinning Best in Sweepstakes, Winners Dog, Winners Bitch and Best of Breed. Our latest star is a female called Ch. Starfires Josefina Is Nasty who also won two Nationals, one of them at 9 months of age, multiple group wins andthe Best of Breed winner at 2006 Eukanuba Championship. Not an easy accomplishment for a female in our breed who is dominated by the boys. The sport of showing dogs is one of the greatest things to happen to us. It has allowed us to meet wonderful people all over the world who share thesame passion as we do. We have friends for life. All these wonderful moments represent many generations of education, goals and sacrifice. We would like to extend much gratitude to the American Kennel Club for recognizing Starfires Pomeranians to represent the Toy breeders of the Year.We are so proudAKC TOP TOY BREEDER OF THE YEARJose Cabrera, Fabin ArientiStarfires Pomeranians2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10102006, 825 AM44i i i i n44ET42riImvi 44NovDec 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 453540 Kessler Blvd N. It all began 6 months ago and came to a head when I attended yesterdays meeting of our local breed club. This incidentcaused me much heartfelt pain that it made me wonder why I should even bother. I came close to not renewing my membership- and I am a founding member of this club. To be perfectly honest, the ONLY reason I renewed was because I am the RescueCoordinator for the club. And I had not attended a meeting since what happened, happened.I wasnt even going to attend the meeting until I noticed when checking the entries on-line that there was a certain loneentry listed. I knew then that I must attend and I must finally speak my mind...and my heart. I sat down at my computer andcarefully composed my thoughts. Tears came to my eyes as I wrote it and I feared that I could not read it aloud to themembership. And that was the case. As the President called out a request for meeting adjourned, I stood up and said, I haveone more thing and handed the copy to a good friend who was seated next to me. Im afraid I wont be able to read this to youall, but if Lynda would, Id appreciate it.As they say All names and breed have been changed to protect the innocent. I cant honestly say that anyoneconcerned in this incident is innocent, but the purpose of this is not to further embarrass anyone involved. This, BTW, did notoccur at a Specialty, just at an All-Breed Show, in a non-regular class. The following is what I wrote I see that the Smiths have entered their dog in the Veterans Class. Apparently thereis no one in this Club who knows that it is customary to offer a round of applause for those that are entered. Six months ago,at this same show, I entered my Veteran Dog in this same class. Not one person applauded. Not one person came up and saidanything. Not one person came over to give him a kind word or a pat. Not one person made him feel he belonged again. He wasno threat to anyone. He wasnt going to beat anyone, take any points, or win anything. He was just an old dog who thought hewas special again - back in the ring for the first time in many years. Maybe he even recalled his Glory Days. He would haveloved to have met anyone there. He would have welcomed you like an old friend. You didnt have to say anything nice about him if you didnt want to. But just in case you cant think of anything to sayabout a Veteran Dog, here are some suggestions It was nice to see him out there. Or go up to him and tell him hes a GoodBoy. Or tell his owner that you are glad that they brought him. Those arent exactly compliments, but they will please hisowner and make him glad that they brought him. I dont think thats asking too much. One day, all too soon, all your beautiful young dogs will be old dogs, too. Maybe one day youll enter them in aVeterans Class. And I hope that you do. Or, like many of us, you remember that old friend, now gone, and wish you still hadthe chance. They deserve it. It may be their final time in the sun - their last time out in front of people. Their last time to everbe in the ring.My old dog is a Fool. He thought he was wonderful that day. He thought he belonged. Instead, he was ignored. I havethought about this for 6 months now, and wasnt going to say anything. But on his behalf, and that of any other Veteran, I hopethat something like this never occurs again. As a Club of Breed Fanciers, you should feel ashamed. Even if you dislike the dogor his owner, at least show Good Sportsmanship and do the Right Thing. Show others that you have respect for your breed.Make that Veteran Dog feel wanted and special again. Let him know that you are glad to see him. It will make his day. You maynever get the chance again. Thank you.As Lynda began reading it, the hush that fell over the room was incredible. Bless her heart, my friend Lynda broke intotears as she struggled through reading this. EVERYONE in the room lowered their heads, and many of them began to cry also, including the President who is a man. I tried my best to hold my head up and refrain from tears, again. The President strodeover to where I was sitting and in a broken voice said. Terry, I am SO sorry. He is such a wonderful dog. There is no excusefor what happened to you. And to him. As I started to say that I wasnt going to say anything again, the room nearly burstwith everyone trying to talk at once. The discussion that followed was both eye-opening and of valuable purpose. Many cameup to me in tears, with hugs and apologies. I am a very private and shy person, not given to sharing my deepest feelings easily. This had been an incredibly difficult thing for me to do, but in honor of my Veteran and all the others out there, I felt it must bedone. Was it worth itWhen Mr. Smith took his lovely 12 12 year old dog neutered due to testicular cancer into the ring, our entiremembership remained and applauded and whooped and hollered him with every move. The Judge moved to the center ofthe ring on his final go round and applauded, as did her ring stewards. Others nearby, watching other breeds, came over andremarked on how wonderful it was to see a Veteran being treated like that. Many including me asked to take his picture.Everyone complimented him and his owners. If only my old dog had enjoyed such a day. Was it worth it You tell me.Submitted by Mary StephensWritten by Terry RussoThe Veteran Dog2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10102006, 827 AM554 i i i i n4 4456 - NOVDEC 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWHealth GeneticsBy Geneva CoatsThe Immune ResponseTHE IMMUNE SYSTEMThe body is continually subject to invasion by various bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Some bacteria even live in harmony with ourbody and are of benefit to us. Most of us have heard about thebenefits of consuming probiotics in our diet, such as the active bacterial cultures in yogurt. These are the samestrains of beneficial bacteria which are naturally present in our colon, which fight off the bad bacteria whichcan produce illness. These good bacteria produce Vitamin K, which is necessary for blood clotting. They alsoproduce B vitamins, including Vitamin B12, which is essential to prevent anemia. If you are on a course ofantibiotics the good probiotic bacteria is killed right along with the bad bacteria It is beneficial in thissituation to eat foods with probiotics such as yogurt and kefir to help restore the normal intestinal flora.Sometimes microorganisms can become pathogenic or disease producing. The first line of defense againstthese foreign invaders is the skin, which provides a physical barrier to their entry. The skin normally containsmany resident bacteria. Acidity in the stomach kills many bacteria which are ingested. The respiratory tract haslong passages which are lined with mucus and cilia to help remove bacteria and prevent infection. The coughreflex serves to keep harmful microbes out of our lungs. However, sometimes pathogens are able to overwhelmour natural defenses and enter the body through the respiratory tract, GI tract, or a break in the skin. Then, thebodys immune system must become activated to eliminate the pathogens. The basic components of the immune system are the white blood cells. There are several different major types ofwhite blood cells. Each type plays a unique role in the immune response. One major type of white blood cells islymphocytes. The lymphocytes are produced by the bone marrow and thymus gland, as well as by the spleen andlymph nodes. If pathogens manage to travel past the first line of defense, through a cut in the skin or through mucusmembranes, their next stop would be the lymph nodes if they do not remain in the local area. The lymph nodesact as filters, with an internal honeycomb of connective tissue filled with lymphocytes that collect and destroybacteria and viruses. When the body is fighting an infection, these lymphocytes multiply rapidly and produce acharacteristic swelling of the lymph nodes. Clusters of lymph nodes are found in the underarms, groin, neck, chest, and abdomen. There are two different types of lymphocytes, known as T cells thymus derived and B cells bone marrowderived. Both T and B cells produce a very important substance called interferon. Interferon is an antiviral andantitumor agent. There are several types of interferon. Interferon has been manufactured in labs and used inhumans to treat viral hepatitis and leukemia.2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10122006, 506 AM56i i i i nA t INovDec 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 57Health and Genetics ContinuedA major role of the T cells is to directly attack foreign cells by seeking out, attacking, and destroying them. They engulf and literally eat the pathogens T cells are directed by the thymus gland, so an immune booster willalso encourage proper thymus gland functioning. The problem in AIDS patients is a deficiency of a specific classof T cells, leaving the patient susceptible to certain bacterial and fungal infections, as well as tumors. T cells, together with other white blood cells, travel to a localized site of infection. There they destroy the microbes, andcan be noticed as pus in a wound. T cells also produce other factors which direct and assist in the immuneresponse. The other class of lymphocytes, the B cells, produce antibodies in response to a specific foreign protein, orantigen. These antibodies attach to the foreign viral or bacterial antigen and destroy it.This is the premise of vaccination. A modified version of a disease organism is injected into the body. It ismodified and weakened so that it will not produce disease. However, the presence of the foreign cells stimulatesthe B cells to produce antibodies against that specific disease organism. The next time you come into contactwith that particular pathogen, your body remembers it, and quickly produces antibodies to destroy it. Clinicalillness will not occur, or will be brief in duration. However, viral infection andor recent vaccination with modified live-virus vaccines for distemper, adenovirus, and parvo, have become recognized as contributors to immune-mediated disease. The current explosion ofautoimmune problems seems to parallel the introduction of MLV vaccines in recent years. Autoimmune thyroiddisease has become a very common canine condition. According to Dr. Jean Dodds, administering multiplevaccines frequently to the immature immune system of a stressed puppy may cause temporary or long-termimmune system damage. Additionally, all animals in the household are exposed to live virus shed by thoserecently vaccinated with any modified live virus vaccine, and could become infected. There is the risk ofacquiring the actual illness from the vaccine if the immune system cannot mount an effective defense. These risksmust be weighed against the benefits of protection from infectious disease when planning a vaccination protocol.Killed virus vaccines are safer but offer lower rates of effectiveness.Interestingly, canine parvovirus, which first occurred in 1976, is theorized to be a mutation of the modified livevirus vaccine for feline panleukopenia. Both viruses are nearly identical in structure. These diseases profoundlyaffect the immunity of their host by suppressing the bone marrow, which produces the blood cells.Scientists believe that tumor cells occur on a daily basis in the body. Usually the body will recognize as abnormaland eliminate tumor cells through T cell activity and a direct attack on the abnormal cells. If the immune responseis not strong enough, infection or tumors can become established. Immune stimulants may be useful for theseconditions.Hyperactive cellular immune responses can produce autoimmune diseases and allergies, while hypoactive cellmediatedimmunity causes immune suppression. When immunity is suppressed, the body is susceptible toinfection and tumor formation.IMMUNE DEFICIENCY THE ROLE OF IMMUNE STIMULANTS AND ANTIOXIDANTSMany dietary supplements have been found to support and stimulate the immune system, thereby helping to fightoff invading pathogens, destroy abnormal tumorcancer cells, and prevent disease.Immune deficiency can happen when the bodys normal defenses are suppressed. This immunosuppression canresult from certain viruses, drugs, radiation, cancer, stress, trauma, or systemic infection. Immune-suppressantviruses of the retrovirus and parvovirus classes are known to cause bone marrow failure, immune-mediated2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10122006, 506 AM574 i i i i n4 4458 - NOVDEC 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWblood diseases, blood cancers such as lymphoma and leukemia, organ failure, and autoimmune diseases. In casesof immunosuppression except those resulting from blood cancers, immune stimulants may be helpful inimproving health.Immune stimulants encourage the activity of these white blood cells both B and T cells. Many vitamins, as wellas some plant extracts, act as immune stimulants. These include garlic, high doses of zinc, selenium, vitamin Aincluding beta carotene, vitamin E and vitamin C. Several herbs stimulate immune function Echinacea, ginsengand astragalus are examples.Zinc is an important mineral which helps delay the spread of cancer cells through the body. Selenium and iodineare necessary for normal thyroid function and immune function. Other nutritional factors that play an importantrole in immune function are vitamin B6 and linoleic acid. The nutrient glutathione is considered an immune-boosting substance. Glutathione is manufactured by the body, but its production is stimulated by sulfur-containing foods. Selenium is also necessary for glutathione production.Foods which encourage glutathione production are eggs, asparagus, broccoli, avocado, spinach, garlic andonions. Garlic and onion contain many tumor-inhibiting substances, but it is the selenium within these alliumvegetables that gives them antioxidant properties. Garlic and onions in large quantities also may cause anemia orlow platelets in some dogs, more about that later.Beta-carotene, the nontoxic precursor to vitamin A, deactivates free radicals. This is an example of what isreferred to as antioxidant activity. Irritation of tissues by free radicals is thought to be one cause of tumor cellformation as well as aging of tissues. Antioxidants inactivate free radicals from the body, thereby reducing therisk of cancer and degenerative disease.Carotenoid antioxidants are found in dark green and orange vegetables and include lutein, lycopene, zeaxanthin, and canthxanthin. Bioflavanoid antioxidants such as reservatrol, rutin, hesperidin, and quercitin are present indark blue and red fruits and berries. Vitamin E is also known to have strong antioxidant capabilities.Studies have shown that vitamin C stimulates effector cells, which are a type of protective T cell. Vitamin C alsoprotects effector cells from their free radical byproducts.Pantotheine, the coenzyme form of pantothenic acid vitamin B5, also stimulates T cell activity. This substanceis naturally found in all cells and is supplemented in the form of calcium pantothenate.Echinacea extract stimulates the formation of antibodies, inhibits hyaluronidase an enzyme produced by manybacteria to gain access to the bodys cells, and increases the production of interferon a viral-fighting substance.Astragalus, often packaged as the Chinese herb Qiang gan ruanjian tang, is known to stimulate the immunesystem. It activates T cells and helps to produce interferon. The tropical plant known as mathake Terminalia spp is considered an immune enhancer.Rosmarinic acid, derived primarily from the herb rosemary, is sometimes used as a pet food preservative. It hasantioxidant properties. Because of their potent antioxidant properties, vitamins E and C are also used as shorttermpreservatives in some commercial dog foods.White willow bark contains a high concentration of salicylic acid, the precursor to aspirin, and the primaryHealth and Genetics Continued2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10122006, 506 AM584 i i i i n4 44NovDec 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 59immune hormone in plants. The shiitake mushroom contains lentinan, aningredient that has been shown to kill viruses, stimulate interferon, and stimulate T-cell activity to preventtumors.Experiments in Japan reveal the immune-enhancing effects of chlorella, which also has antiviral and antitumoreffects and greatly stimulates the production of interferon.Antioxidants are being identified every day, and there are many other immune stimulants.TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING.... AUTOIMMUNE PROBLEMS AND ALLERGIESThe term autoimmunity literally means immunity against self. The bodys defenses become unable todifferentiate between self and foreign. The immune system then attacks and destroys the bodys own tissuesor organs. These autoimmune problems can affect a wide variety of tissues, including the thyroid gland, adrenalgland, and the pancreas, creating a diabetic condition. They even can affect the joints, causing arthritis, and theskin, hair follicles and connective tissues, as well as the red blood cells and platelets. The scientific terms forthese problems are autoimmune thyroiditis, Addisons disease, diabetes, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpuraITP, immune mediated hemolytic anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, pemphigus, lupus, and dermatomyositis. Theseconditions have a definite adverse effect on the quality of life for our dogs, causing them pain and suffering. In humans the ability to develop an autoimmune disease is determined by a dominant genetic trait that is verycommon 20 percent of the population that may present in families as different autoimmune diseases within thesame family. The genetic predisposition alone does not cause the development of autoimmune diseases. It seemsthat other factors need to be present as well in order to initiate the disease process. Numerous viruses, bacteria, chemicals, toxins, and drugs have been implicated as triggers in susceptible individuals. The four main causes ofautoimmune disease are felt to be1. Genetic predisposition2. Hormonal influences, especially of sex hormones3. Infections, especially of viruses4. Stress For dogs with autoimmune problems, i.e. an overstimulated immune system, the immune system needs to calmand regain normal control functions it does NOT need further stimulation. For these dogs, immune stimulantsshould best be avoided. The high sulfur content of garlic and onions may be responsible for stimulating an autoimmune hemolytic anemia,in which the body destroys its own blood cells. Sometimes platelets in the blood are destroyed by thisautoimmune reaction. Platelets are a key component in blood clotting. When they are destroyed, the dogexperiences a tendency to bleed easily. If you are using green supplements with spirulina and chlorella, bear in mind the possible immune stimulanteffect on a dog with an autoimmune problem. Steroids and other anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly employed in these situations.CORTICOSTEROIDS such as Prednisone, Cortisone, Decadron and Solu-Medrol reduce inflammation andsuppress the immune response. These drugs are useful for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, asthma, colitis, allergies, and autoimmune hepatitis.Steroids are naturally produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. However, they can have a number ofserious side effects on the body. Osteoporosis is a particular concern because the drug causes loss of calciumfrom bone. Extra calcium and vitamin C and D in the diet are generally recommended. Steroids such asprednisone tend to raise blood sugar and produce a diabetic condition. Steroid use also renders the patientsusceptible to infection, due to the suppression of the immune response. Long-term use of steroids promotesstress ulcer formation. However, steroid drugs have a very important role in medicine. They are life-saving in treating autoimmunehepatitis. For acute inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease, they are able to bringsymptoms under control very quickly. Steroids are often necessary to control acute allergic inflammatoryconditions such as asthma or dermatitis.Whenever possible, the patient is tapered off the drug fairly quickly to avoid long-term use. Dykes Hadleigh KennelsIn 1947 my husband, Sir Reginald Conyers, and I went to England on official business for the Bermuda Government. We went to present gifts from the people of Bermuda to HMS Bermuda, the cruiser named after our Colony. It was a thrilling visit. I had not been in England for some years, nor had my husband since he represented Bermuda at the Coronation of His Majesty King George VI.We had three pom dogs at the time, and we thought we would like to buy a bitch and do some breeding. You see, both of us were quite green on the difficulties of pom breeding. We had difficulty in making contacts. England was short of nearly everything including paper. We could not obtain lists of breeders. We watched the papers for any dog- shows where poms were to be shown, and this is how we first met Mrs. Gladys Dyke of Hadleigh. To this meeting I owe a lovely friendship. We bought a little bitch, Hadleigh Jewel, by Glenelg Piccolo and Hadleigh Silver Charm. We already owned a dog, Peter of Glenelg. When we returned to Bermuda and Sherry, as we called Hadleigh Jewel, came to the time to breed, none of the dogs knew what it was all about. So we sent to Mrs. Dyke and bought Hadleigh Diamond King, who proved to be a wonderful stud.During World War II, Mrs. Dyke had all the difficulties of a very much rationed and bombed England, and it amazed me how she managed to maintain and retain her kennels. But you know English people and their dogs the dogs came firstIn 1948 Mrs. Dyke bred Ch. Dimples, Ch. Billy Buttons, and Int. Ch. Honey Bunch. This was her big start. Her kennels suffered setbacks, though, in 1949 through illness. She came back with Ch. Hadleigh Brilliant Flame which, in addition to his prowess in the showring, became a. i4Mrs. G. Dyke with her Ch. Sebastian of Hadleigh. In 1950 Ch. Dimples and Ch. Brilliant Flame made many wins for Mrs. Dyke of Hadleigh. To date Mrs. Dyke has bred 27 champions, including international champions, and has won 138 postwar challenge certificates. In 1954 Sweet Lady of Hadleigh was awarded best bitch in show, all breeds, at WELKS championship show, and followed this up in the same year to win best bitch in show, all breeds, at Birmingham two-day championship show with an entry of over 4,000.Mrs. Dyke considers that her greatest triumph was in 1960 when Ch. Pixietown Serenade of Hadleigh was awarded reserve best in show, all breeds, at Crufts with an entry of 14,308. Serenade was previously awarded best dog in show at the LKA championship show in November 1959.One of her best bitches, from show and breeding factors, is Ch. In front of the actual kennels is a patch of that lovely English grass where the poms are exercised. The floors of the kennels are covered in cedar sawdust which, I think, helps their coats and must certainly make them smell so nice.Mrs. Dyke believes in line breeding, provided the stock is fine and healthy. In America it is more likelyto be the turkey, but this is a good time to remind ourselves and anyone who gets a dog from us that fat turkey orgoose skin is really, really bad for Pomeranians or any dog. My vet says that just after Thanksgiving and Christmashe sees more pancreatitis than he sees during the rest of the year put together. What, then, SHOULD we use for training treats My favorite used to be nuked hot dog slices, but those are fairlyfatty, even with much of the grease taken out during microwaving, and are salty to boot. Cheerios, or 13 of one, canbe a good treat for housebreaking because you can keep it in the pockets of your housecoat without its going bad.For regular training treats I like Natural Balance rolls tiny pieces of the stuff can be rolled up in little balls as youwould roll clay. And now Natural Balance makes something called Roll-a-Rounds, which seems to be freeze-driedslices of Natural Balance which you can break off small pieces of. Oliver is crazy about the stuff. But for theultimate in training treats for Oliver, who is now working through the Utility article retrieves, I get out a small chunkof cooked white meat chicken and tear off suitably sized pieces. Theres nothing like the Real Thing to motivatelearning a tough exercise.Write and tell me if you have a favorite training treat.UP FRONT AND PERSONALOne of the perks of writing a regular column is the ability to tell the world about a personal joy, and Im not going topass up the opportunity. I would like to announce to the worldor at least to the part of it that counts that I amnow the proud owner of a new puppy. Janesas Wrinkle in Time, call name Tesseract, or Tessie for short, wasborn on March 17, 2006, and came home on September 11. Her picture appears in Just Fur Fun this month. Herwebsite is httpwww.geocities.comudxpomTessie.html . No titles yet, but were working on it as fast as we canBRINGING UP BABYSince this is on my mind, I am going to discuss some of the things that can be done with puppies to get them ready toshow in Obedience, etc. some of them are things I am starting with Tessie. For Rally, an exercise that can causeproblems in training adult dogs is the Back Up 3 Steps, Dog Stays in Position. It is essentially a short backwardsheeling. Tessie has not yet learned to heel forwardIm postponing that for a while, partly because I think it willPERFORMANCE2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10122006, 508 AM644r4n4XWi . Tt Uii i i n 4 nnnn^^^mNovDec 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 65Performance Continuedkeep her from getting bored Obedience is funwe do different thingssays Tessie and partly because Im havingproblems with my knee right now and cant do a lot of heeling. Back Up is hard for well-trained dogs because theywant to sit when they are in heel position. Tessie is learning to sit there, but it is just one of the many things we do,not automatic. So with Tessie at my left, in correct heel position, I put a treat almost into her mouth with my lefthand, and step back. Its a miracle She steps backwards, too You should have seen the problems I went throughwith my adult dogs trying to teach this, and the weeks it took to keep them from sitting or turning around to follow thetreat. Once she is backing up reliably in heel position, Ill also introduce backing up in front of me as I move forward. This is not a Rally or Obedience move yet next Rally Advisory Committee, I think Ill suggest it, but it will be veryuseful if we decide to do Freestyle.Sit is, of course, an important thing to learn in Obedience, Rally, AND Agility. I am teaching it to Tessie inconjunction with two positionsfront and heel. Treat in hand, I lead her into that perfect front that we all want to seein the ring, and reward her. Twice. The second reward is to teach her that sitting is not a one time sit-and-bounce-upaffair it begins to teach the Stay behavior. Then, holding the treat in my left hand, I make a wide C from her nose, away from my left leg and then back up it to perfect heel position. The accompanying command is Heel. I alsoadd, Sit when she reaches heel position. Other times, when she is already near my side I have a little shadow whogoes in and out with me, I can tell her to Sit and then Down. Working also on the Down, I can have Tessiedown either at my side, with no sit between moving and lying down, or in front of me.The hand signal accompanying the sit and down is very important for helping puppies distinguish between commands. The treat to lure the puppy into the behavior is held between the thumb and index finger, the remaining fingers beingheld together straight out to make an obvious palm. For Sit, the palm is up, and the treat is placed in front of thedogs nose and then moved slightly up and back toward the dogs eyes, so that in order to eat the treat, the dogs headmust follow the hand. The natural movement of the dogs body then produces a sit. If the dog backs up, I do notmove my hand the dog must conform to MY wishes, not the other way around. I will sometimes put the treat in frontof the dogs nose, but then immediately pull it back where I want it to be. In fact, I will sometimes pull it a littlefurther forward and up, to get the dog to bring her hind end forward as she sitsthe rock-back sit could be aproblem later in Obedience competition. Tessie is responding to this very well. The hand signal for the Down is withthe palm down. The treat moves from the dogs nose down and slightly toward the dog, approximately between thefront paws. From a sit position or from a standing position, the dog has to fold back in order to get the treat.Again, this looks toward a dog that will later be competing in Obedience Open and Utility and needs to not moveforward from a stand in order to go into a down. Because I teach Puppy Kindergarten, I am well aware that somedogs take a while to learn to respond to the Down commandsignal. It is important to simply hold the treat in place onthe floor and let the dog figure out that in order to get the treat comfortably, it is necessary to lie down. From the sit or the down position, it is also easy to teach a Stand. The treat is still held between thumb and indexfinger, but this time the hand is vertical, with the palm facing the dog on the left side of the handler. From a Sit, thehand then moves slightly down and slightly away from the dog. It is important not to move it too far forward, sincethe dog should not be walking forward for this, merely standing up. From the down, the hand faces the dog in thesame way, but moves more up and slightly away from the dog. The goal is to get the dog to stand up in place, withthe body in exactly the same location as previously. The hand position for the stand while moving is approximatelythe same the handlers hand, palm toward the dog, is positioned to make it clear that the dog is not being lured intoeither a sit or a down, but must stand still in order to get the treat.More next time about Bringing Up Babyfeel free to write me with your comments. I plan to offer some suggestionsfor breeders also, things that will help whether the puppies eventually go on to compete or not, and that wont takemuch extra time. Then develop your own philosophy of training and showing based on yourreaction to these sayings. My personal take on this I love to win. But even more important is the feeling that I get when its me and my dogand we are functioning as a team. Sometimes this happens during training sometimes it happens in the ring. Andsome of those times we do win or at least place. But the winning itself doesnt matter as much as that glorious feelingof working together. I would rather be part of a smooth-working team with my dog and not even qualify for somereason than to have our performance disjointed but accurate and win the class.Did you ever watch a competitor leave the ring and immediately startwellcomplaining about theirperformance The dog may have worked his heart out in the ring and who was responsible for training him in thefirst place, but the handler starts griping about His heeling was just horrible, and did you see him sniffing the floorevery time we passed by that one place They must not have cleaned the ring. And the noise in here and the echoesare just awful, and I dont know whether we qualified or not. Even when the handler is blaming herself, I reallyshould have given him a better signal for that jump I should have done a front cross there, the focus is on analyzingwhat went wrong in the ring. Meanwhile the poor dog is standing there drooping. No wonder they didnt work like ateam if the handler cares that little about the dog. I like to see a handler come out of the ring with some enthusiasmtoward their teamworkWow Did you see us on that Back Up 3 Steps Werent we fabulous AND looking atthe dog with pride AND taking him for a well-deserved reward. AKC only recommends what the parent clubs must do. From my ownexperience, I have found that some parent clubs appear to be taking little notice of all the commandments. That isnot the best way to go either. However, with the woeful shortage of mentors, we need to be judicious in our rulesand not ban people who could be of genuine service to the club.Regional Pomeranian clubs should make plans to locate a presenter and offer seminars and ringside mentoring attheir shows. This is a service that we are obligated to provide for judges to help insure the future of our breed. HeartzThis series is copyrighted by the author and may notbe reproduced in whole or in part without her consent.ACLOSERLOOKSIDE MOVEMENTThe gait of a Pomeranian from the side should be no different than that of any other Spitz-type dog. Balancedstructure between the front and rear will enable the dog to move efficiently and effortlessly. The Pomeranian is abreed that requires moderate angulation, but nevertheless, he will have reach, drive and suspension, if builtcorrectly. There are many dogs who appear to have reach and drive when moving and would be called deliberatemovers, but these dogs lack suspension. Suspension canbe defined as the time the dog is actually suspended in the airwhile still moving. The dog who moves with suspensionappears to be moving effortlessly. Suspensioncannot be obtained without the dog being in near perfectbalance front and rear.If a dog has straight shoulders but is angulated behind it willhave to compensate in some way for the lack of angulation. When the rear is more angulated, it overreaches the amount ofpropulsion the front is able to exert at the same time. Thedog must compensate in some way to get his legs out of theway. He may lift his front producing a hackney gate. While this is flashy to some, it is not correct. He may crabor sidewind if his back is short, or he may wing his legsoutward. He will do whatever is necessary to compensate. He has practiced it from the time he learned to walk. He cannotbe trained out of it. He will adjust for the imbalance to a level that is functional for this particular dog. Just as adog who loses a leg compensates for the loss, the out of balance dog compensates with less than perfectmovement.Pacing is shown here in the illustrations and is identifiable by the legs on the same side moving in the samedirection at the same time. This type of movement will look slightly odd until you look closely to see the dogtends to roll from side to side as he moves. The dog who paces does so because he is built less thanadequately and will resort to this type of movement when overtired or in the young dog who has not yet gottenhis timing right. The Pomeranian is abreed that requiresmoderate angulation, but nevertheless, hewill have reach, driveand suspension, ifbuilt correctly.2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10122006, 535 AM72i i i in4c-v'Jl't'i.'WlVvW4 44NovDec 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 73Correct side movement showing the proper suspension while still moving forward.Overreaching. If requested, children sort their dogs according to size andability to move out. This is very important. Large dogs should notbe close to each other. They may be dog aggressive and start afight. The junior may drop the lead or lose control.indcrk13011consolidated.netwww.indiancreekshelties.com3. SAFETY IS FOREMOST AT ALL TIMES. In the finalclass for Best Junior Handlers, the judge may sort dogsaccording to size and expertise of handler.A paying client in AKC conformation competition wants theirhandler to show their dog, not himselfherself. This ruleapplies to Juniors as well, show your dog, not yourself.Juniors must own the dog shown, or the dog must be owned bythe handlers father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, grandfather, or grandmother, including the corresponding stepand half relations, or by a member of the Junior Handlershousehold.BITCHES IN SEASON ARE NOT ELIGIBLE for juniorcompetition.Thinking along these lines, a judge looks for the handler he orshe cannot see. Some of the following are my personalpreference. A HANDLER SHOULD NOT SHOW A DOGBACKWARDS in the line up to draw attention. HandlersSHOULD NOT STEP ON TOES or KNEE dogs to changetheir position. All handling is done with bait and the lead. Theabove is occasionally done and rewarded, but a true handlerremains invisible. A child must be dressed appropriately. No flounces, low necks, and bright colors. No clunky shoes orshort skirts or pants dragging the floor.Once again, this detracts from the dogs.Girls should have hair in ponytail, braid,or buns, no flopping long hair to detractfrom the dog. Tennis shoes areacceptable. Boys should button theircoats so they do not flop as they runaround the ring. Children should watch ajudge occasionally, but no grinningsmile and constant eye contact isnecessary. They should glance backoccasionally at the judge while doingpatterns.SOME JUDGES PREFER YOU DONOT make a courtesy circle beforegaiting. By eliminating the circle, thedog has a smoother take off. On a largedog, courtesy circles tangle the legs. Ifone makes the circle with a small dog,NEVER put your body between thejudge and the dog. My personalpreference is NO courtesy circle.Always have the dog toward the judge.2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10122006, 535 AM74i i w mNovDec 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 75All dogs are clean and in good condition. Bathe and groom themas required by their Breed Standard. Trim your toenails and makesure your dogs teeth are clean. A judge does not judge the dog, butpart of presentation of a dog by a handler is short toenails and cleanteeth. Clients deserve no less. Junior Handlers are our future. Ourhandlers have future aspirations in the sport and bad habits are hardto break, so it is best to form good habits initially.KNOW YOUR ARMBAND NUMBER WHEN YOU COME TOPICK IT UP. TELL RING STEWARD YOUR CLASS ANDARM-BAND NUMBER. THIS IS A MUSTEMPHASIS Girl handlers should pull their hair back or up, thuseliminating the distraction of flying hair. Longer strides are requiredif you want to move faster. Do NOT do high kick ups whenmoving, it too is distraction from your dog. Do not prance aroundthe ring in short steps and move to show your dog to hisadvantage. Adjust your steps to your dogs size.Flying elbows are a distraction. Keep your arms close to your sideswhen moving. Do not bait the dog going down and back. Thiscauses side winding. Stand back a distance from the judge whensetting up on the return from the down and back.Be attentive regarding the space between you and the next handler.Ask those behind if they are ready. DO NOT PLACE YOUR DOGON THE TABLE UNTIL THE JUDGE acknowledges you. Judgeswant to see your expertise in tabling the dog. Judges may ask youto show the bite. Judges may move a foot to unbalance your dog.Move the foot back. Once the judge goes over the dogs head, move to the front and hold the dogs head firmly. If you remove thecollar for the table, replace it before returning the dog to the floor.Judges will want to see your dogs on the table presented properlyas well as in a stack on the ground. DO NOT PLACE YOURSELFBETWEEN THE DOG AND THE JUDGE when presenting orgaiting. There should be no wasted motion on the corners. A smoothtransition between dog and handler is desired when the leadchanges hands. Keep the lead in your hand, no drooping at alltimes. On a lead change, if one allows the dog to go a little out infront of themselves, the handler can step back and make a transitionsmoothly behind. Do what is comfortable.LISTEN TO THE JUDGES REQUEST ON PROPER PATTERN.If you do not understand or hear, ask again. Watch others in frontof you to learn the established pattern. Thank the judge after yourexamination and gaiting. Be courteous to other exhibitors andcongratulate them on their win. Tomorrow, it may be YOUaccepting the Best Junior HandlerRibbon Be gracious. Take a picture ofyour winMy Conformation Classes enjoyedseeing one of their participants awardedBest Junior Handler at Eukunuba inJunior Showmanship two years in arow. Some judges request otherpatterns and ideas regarding a goodhandler. Watch closely and give a judgewhat it is he or she desires. A goodJunior Handler has no wasted bodymotion. They handle their dog smoothlyand present the dog to the best of theirability. Be aware of your dog at alltimes, dress properly, and do not callattention to yourself. Move as a team.Show with self-confidence, and becomea total picture of excellence. Good luckin your endeavors. YOU ARE THEFUTUREAn approved AKC judge for 25 years, Icontinue to enjoy judging juniors. Ourdaughters participated in JuniorHandling and we taught 4-H JuniorHandlers. The girls participated inYouth Activity in Horses. Beingprivileged to judge our ASSA NationalJunior classes as well as a RegionalCompetition in Canada, this informationis written to both assist a judge inselection of the child that stands outin large classes of juniors and to polishthe expertise of the upcoming juniorhandlers.Happy Holidaysfrom theAmerican Pomeranian Cluband thePomeranian Review Staff.2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10122006, 535 AM7576 - NOVDEC 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWSWEEPSTAKESJudge Mrs. Camilla KnightPOMERANIANS, Puppy Dog, 6 - 9 mos.1 ANIMATIONS NEMO. Since this is a new event, I havebeen receiving questions from club members, so I would like to explain how our event will be run. Thiswill give you plenty of time to pack your bags you wont want to miss itThe Top Twenty Pomeranians in Breed will receive invitations to enter and participate in ourevent. The event will be held the Monday evening of our National Specialty Week. It will be a black tieoptional affair, with exhibitors and spectators asked to dress in their finest formal or semi-formal attire. The judging will be done by three judges a Handler Judge, a Breeder Judge, and an AKCapproved Judge, ideally all with many years in our breed. After the twenty exhibitors have been broughtinto the ring, the judges will be escorted into the center of the ring. Each of these judges will be handeda score sheet with point allowances for the different features important to our breed. These judges willeach examine all twenty dogs on the floor and the table, and record their points on their secret scoresheet. The Top Twenty committee will tally the scores and announce the winner. Scores will never bepublished and will be destroyed by the Top Twenty Committee. One dog will be named the winner, which will be announced at our Banquet after breed judging Wednesday evening. This event has been done in other breeds for years and becomes quite a highlight of their NationalSpecialty. It showcases each dog for much more time than you can when there are 60 BOB entries, andgives spectators a ringside view of our best dogs. This is the place to see the cream of the crop ondisplay. There are many exciting features to this show that we have never done before at any eventFirst, we will be printing a beautiful keepsake catalog for the event, which will become a collectors item.It will have a show posed photo of each dog, with a three-generation pedigree on the facing page. Forthose of you who cant make the event, the catalog will be available for purchase through the APCwebsite as long as supplies last. All dogs entered in the event will receive a beautiful commemorative rosette with APC TopTwenty and the dogs name embossed on the ribbon. The winner, and the breeder of the winner, will alsoreceive an award rosette at our banquet. Now, as far as spectators, we will have an array of food, which will be included in the 10admission price and a cash bar at the event. The menu is being planned right now and will be asspectacular as the dogs and the dressTo cap this exciting evening, because the winner will not be announced until Wednesday afterbreed judging, we will also have a Peoples Choice award. Every spectator who purchases a catalogbefore or at the event will have a Peoples Choice ballot tucked inside. At the end of the event thecommittee will announce and award a rosette to the Top Twenty dog chosen by the spectators ringside. This gives everyone a chance to be a part of the judging and again acknowledges the best of our breed.Information on catalog and ticket sales will be on the APC website and in the premium list before theNational Specialty, and if anyone needs any information, please feel free to call me 631 366-2330 oremail me at mzJoanoptonline.net or Jackie Rayner at Jaken5995aol.comThe Top Twenty dogs and bitches should watch their mailbox for an invitationThe First AnnualAmerican Pomeranian ClubTop TwentyJoan Behrend2006 NOV DEC REVIEW.p65 10122006, 537 AM87 INI 4 i i i in488 - NOVDEC 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWAnniversary Issue, Oct 1988 25.00Jan 75, Oct 77, May 79, April 80 20.00August 1997 15.00Available Back Issues 10.00To order back issues, mail check made out to the APC toThe Pomeranian Review11139 E.
