Its always a little scary to start something from scratch, but your response has been tremendous. We will do our best to keep you happy. Now, Im going to let you in on a secret. I want to steal Eleanor Millers car. Why Well, its just like one that I had that got demolished, except its newer, and those models are hard to come by. So I just may steal it. Of course, when the alarm is sounded and everyone rushes around pointing their fingers and yelling, I dont think they will ever suspect me. Because, everyone knows that I am opposed to stealing.Especially when someone ELSE is doing the stealing. Im going to let you in on another secret. Eleanor Miller wants to steal my typewriter Why Because it can make out entry forms You simply put the entry blank in, push some buttons, and 17 seconds later...a completed, legible, perfect entry form. No more misspelled Sires and Dams It can also do pedigrees by itself. No more squinting at tiny letters with a lot of s and -s Seriously, if you are in the market for a new typewriter, drop me a note. The one I just got is super.Had a nice chat with Claudia Pfeffer from New Orleans the other day. I hate talking to people in New Orleans, I always get hungry. Unless, of course, I happen to be in New Orleans - then I love talking to people - in between mouthfuls. I still say they should change the New Orleans motto - instead of The City That Care Forgot they should call it The City That Calories Forgot.Of course, we ate in rather porcine fashion while in Manhattan for the Specialty and the Garden thats part of the fun. Our Peke friend Kay Mrs. Walter Jeffords always tells us of a new restaurant to try, and this year it was The Sea Palace - superb Dont miss it if youre in the Big Apple.I wish I could think of an excuse to go to Chicago - truly a city of fabulous restaurants. I was born there, and I know them all. I know I know Ill write a story about Ed Jenner, and Ill have to go to Chicago to do that Watch for a visit with this popular judge and Pom fancier coming soon. This is working out just greatSpeaking of people in New Orleans and food, you all know that Joan Gordon Alexander is a judge, butdid you know that she is also a tremendous cook Joans Cajun Concoctions are legendary - in fact, her son just opened a restaurant the menu consists solely of his mothers recipes. I think Joan told me that its up on the Cape somewhere...now, who can I do a story about that just happens to live on Cape Cod Ill find someone. THE TIME JUST FLU BY DEPARTMENT Of course, the PRs policy of eating and interviewing may not always go according to plan...our visit with Edna Girardot which was scheduled for this issue had to be postponed. Edna caught some sort of bug, dont worry, shes fine now, but it was just too hard for us to get everything together for this month. Ednas story will be coming soon.In keeping with my new-found policy of efficiency, I hate to discard anything, or waste anything. So, since I had already started out with EDNA, but had to postpone,I cut off the NA and ended up with ED. Its called the luck of the Irish. Therefore, coming sooner than we expected is our visit with Ed Jenner, well-known judge and Pom fancier. Ed is a muliple breed fancier, and regularly has top specimens in several different rings. See Ed Jenner...Beyond Expectations in this issue. Of course,I feel like I got cheated. I didnt get to have the escargot at Sages East, didnt get to incinerate the roof of my mouth on the szeschwan at the original Benihanas, not even time to hoist a few short ones at Sybaris at the top of the Hancock Center. Oh well, maybe next time.COMPUTERS ARE ONLY HUMAN DEPARTMENT. We here at the PR are R for Red-ln-The-Face over the error in the point system last month. I was on vacation last week.2. My kids havent been brushing him.3. I creme-rinsed him and creme-rinsed him hes still matted.4. But I brush him every day5. I bathed him in baby shampoo this time. Its too soft for his coat.6. I took him to the vet. The vet took him in the back for 5 minutes. When he brought him back, he was matted.7. Hes had fleas. Hes been scratching a lot.8. He wasnt matted before but it rained the other day. I dont know what happened.9. He tries to bite me when I brush him. He doesnt like being brushed.10. He was sick so I havent been able to brush him for a couple of weeks.MORAL TO THE STORY1. If your dog is brushed good and well- groomed before you go on vacation, he certainly wont be matted when you come back.2. Dont buy a dog expecting the kids to take full responsibility. Very few are mature enough. The thrillof a dog and all the care involved wears off quickly.3. Creme rinse does not remove mats. A brush and comb does the job.4. If you are brushing every day and he is matted, you are not doing it correctly. Mats start at the skin,so dont just skim over the top layer of hair. A good, down-to-the-skin brushing at least weekly is a must.5. It doesnt matter what kind of shampoo you use. Shampoo does not mat your dog. The trick is to give him a thorough brushing out before the bath, not afterwards. Water will tighten mats already there.6. Thats ridiculous. Its not possible for any dog to mat in 5 minutes7. Yes, scratching will cause a dog to mat more. All the more reason to brush frequently.8. Same principle as bathing. If your dog is already matted when he gets wet, the mats will get worse.9. Teach your puppy when very young to enjoy grooming. Make it fun but at the same time let him know who is boss in the very beginning. Dont tolerate any misbehavior or snapping. If you let him get away with it, he wins hes the boss.10. Your dog is sick All the more reason to pamperhim. Brushing wont hurt. Besides, he should have been well-groomed before he got sick.Grooming time can be a quiet and enjoyable visit between you and your dog. With Poms, the time spent in your lap is beneficial to both. Your dog receives your undivided attention - or so they think. You can be watching TV, or just thinking. While grooming, check for anything abnormal. Clean ears - if there is a dark brown discharge...thats a sign of infection. Is the skin too dry Are there fleas Nails need cutting Check teeth do they need cleaning Any soresStudies have shown that those who own pets have for themselves reduced medical problems. The simple acts of touching petting your dog as you groom him enforces the affection between you both but also does a lot to lower your blood pressure and heart rate...that is, until you find that fleaDWISHING YOU WELLTHE POM READER AND ALL READERSMARY VICKERS 2818 Jefferson Drive 703 960-7755 Alexandria, VA 22303PresentskJmWKKKKmmMILLAMORS IM A WINDJAMMER 8 monthsCh. BEYOND EXPECTATIONSm tgrf^amieSbonafjd 1LEXINGTON. KENTUCKY UNRETOUCHEDEdward B. Jenner exhibiting the undefeated harness horse Rare DesisionDonaldson PhotoI learned a long time ago never to say Whats new to Ed Jenner - he usually comes up with something you would never expect - but the other day I forgot, asked the question, and received this for an answer Well, we just finished Emma, and I think we are going to special her.I hated to admit that I didnt know who Emma was, but I didnt, and heres why.Emma is a Great Pyrenees.I didnt expect that.Mention his name to Dachshund people, and they know Ed Jenner as a successful Dachshund breeder. To Peke people, and they will note that he is one of the staunchest supporters of that breed in the country. And, of course, we all know Ed to be a true Pom fancier. Many, many breeds have derived benefit from the Jenner touch.Eds list of accomplishments in the show ring is endless, but Eds devotion to the sport of pure-bred dogs goes deeper than points, ribbons, and Bests In Show...Ed is one of those people that absolutely loves dogs.Growing up in Winnetka, Illinois, Ed would sit for hours while his mother read aloud from the books of Albert Payson Terhune, and as you might expect, Ed decided that he wanted a Collie. In short order, a Collie was purchased, and for Eds next birthday, his mother took him to the Westminster Kennel Club Show at New Yorks Madison Square Garden. Eds dog won his class, and Ed was extremely pleased. While on the bench, a very distinguished gentleman walked up to Ed, and demanded, Young man, let me see that dog. Ed complied, the gentleman pronounced the dog very nice, and introduced himself. The man was Albert Payson Terhune. What better recommendation for a Collie, than from the Collie man himselfThe very next year, Ed again returned to the Garden, and his very nice dog was awarded Best of Breed over an entry of 123 Apparently, this was enough to convince Ed that the Garden was the place to be -1985 marked Eds 46th attendance at Westminster. The Pom Reader April 198511\CH. LENNISS TAR LACY FOXFIRE Ashby photoBut the Garden is not the only show Ed attends, and he certainly has not limited himself to the Collie ring. Among his list of credits...tremendous success in Beagles, Cairn Terriers...Ed had the first Keeshond to win a Group in the United States...Dobermans, Dalmatians...Ed has the topwinning Irish Terrier of all time...Pugs, Poodles...Eds Peke, Ch. St. Aubrey Laparata Dragon, is the undisputed Top-Producing stud in the history of the breed - over 70 Champions to his credit Ed has had at least one Peke in the Top Ten for many, many years, and many times Number One Peke...Ed has won the Quaker Oats Award twice...much, much success in campaigning Poms...Eds Standard Poodle, Command Performance, was awarded Best In Show at the Garden in 1973...oh yes, horses, too. Ed has been successful in breeding and showing horses for years. The original Knolland Farm was a mid-sized breeding facility, drastically increased in size by Eds purchase of the present farm near Richmond, Illinois formerly known as Hickory Creek Farm. Ed is a well-known figure in horse circles, and although the breeding operation has been honed down considerably, still keeps fine stock in competition. Ed has a house in Lake Forest a Chicago suburb, but Knolland Farm is where he spends most of his time. And who could blame him It is one of the most picturesque properties I have ever seen. The whole place is beautiful...I could and did spend hours at Eds kitchen table, which is piled high with show photos - and a brass plaque which requests No Bloody Smoking which I didnt notice until about the ninth puff - Ed was too polite to say anything - and the kitchen overlooks a sheer drop down to the lake the lake is theirs, too. There are numerous buildings - all of the facility is fabulous, but the best is reserved, as I expected, for the dogs. The dog room in the main house is huge - complete with fireplace - the dogs are in floor pens which are huge, on tile, each with their own bed, each with a red yellow nametag red yellow are the Knolland Farm colors. The room is bright and airy, and also overlooks the lake. But back to my favorite room, the kitchen. No matter when you are there, there will be eight to ten Toys in various stages of play. The central cupboard doors have been removed, and pillows make a dandy place for a nap. It is immediately evident that thedogs are members of the family. And one sight I will always remember was when the front door was thrown open and the courtyard was filled with several different breeds romping and playing. Truly a nice life for a dog or a human, for that matter. Ed Jenners dogs are number one in his book.continued next pageWT^siac'WwRear view of main house at Knolland FarmThe Pom Reader April 1985Wr.V t4vED JENNER continuedAnd his dogs are number one in a lot of other peoples books, too - Eds success in the show ring is legendary. The big winning that Eds dogs have done over the years is hardly a surprise to anyone in the fancy the dogs have been widely recognized for their quality, but I know something that you may find very surprising. Do you know where Ed got his first Pom Oh, this is a good one.Ed fell in love with the lovable, energetic, acrobatic Pomeranian when he was ten years old...and where would you go to get an energetic, acrobatic dog To an energetic, acrobatic, trapeze artist with the circus, of course. Im not kidding Actually, the trapeze artist was a friend of the Jen- ner familys cook, and thats where Ed got his first Pom - a black bitch named Wee Duchess. And I guess thats when Eds love of the Pom swung into high gear.Of course, Ed did not always get his stock from the above source. His association with top breeders has availed him of some of the most easily recognizable names in the breed from the Lenniss came Ch. Lenniss Tar Lacy Foxfire from Eleanor Ken Miller came Ch. Millamors Marketta from Beverly Norris, came several top specimens, including many Ch. BevCH.LENNISS TAR LACY FOXFIRE Ashby photoNors Toasted Fudge, winner of many top prizes including the Quaker Oats Award. As you might imagine, Ed has definite ideas about the breed, as a breeder, and as a judge.I learned long, long ago a very good formula for judging the Pomeranian. The Pom should be an orange be round from every angle.I want the overall picture to be good, I have absolutely no preference when it comes to color, although some colors can add more glamour than others. Years ago many of the colors we now see were disqualified that has been changed. You often hear that only the larger bitches are good breeders that is not true. I know of many 4-5 pound bitches that can free-whelp litters of 2 and 3 puppies. Its not just size that counts there. And Ed has advice about exhibiting the Pom.DONT RUN People that run with Toy dogs throw them off gait - running doesnt do one bit of good. I spend a lot of time in the ring figuring out how to stop people from running BATHE YOUR DOGS Many people do not bathe their dogs - they claim they will lose hair. What you lose through bathing you are going to lose anyway.Constant brushing in the ring will drive some judges crazy - all they can see is the brush. Touch the dog up, and then concentrate on showing the dog more than brushing the dog.Ed has excellent assistance in the care and conditioning of his dogs - Luc Boileau has been in charge of grooming, training, and conditioning the Knolland Farm show dogs for 14 years, and is himself a very popular member of the dog fancy. Interestingly, Luc started out as a Sight Hound breeder - he did a great deal of winning with Borzoi, Whippets, and Greyhounds - but Luc is recognized as one of the finest Toy handlers around. At this writing, Luc is in England for a judging assignment. Also on the Knolland Farm team is Pam Guldemond, who is active in the North Central Illinois Pekingese Club. Eds son Danny Jen- ner has recently taken over the Dachshund breeding program, and lives in one of the houses on the grounds of Knolland Farm. Also heavily involved with the success of Eds dogs were Edna Voyles and Elaine Rigden. Susan Fisher Buckle, daughter of the late, well-respected judge Winnifred Heckman, handles the Poms, and has certainly done all right. Sue campaigned Ch. Bev-Nors Toasted Fudge to the Quaker Oats award. The Pom Reader April 1985Left Ed in New York, receiving the Quaker Oats award for the tremendous record set by Lacy. Virginia Graham at the mike.Ed has been a licensed judge for over thirty years, has judged at many of the most prestigious shows in the land, including his debut judging assignment at this years Garden where he evaluated Pekingese for the Westminster Kennel Club.Ed Jenner has always been an active breeder, and his philosophy of the responsibility of the breeder is probably exactly what you would expect.Anyone can buy a dog. Any time I get involved in a breed, I try to breed to improve, to make the next generation better. But theres more to Ed Jenner than just breeding principles and top awards as Ive said before, Ed absolutely loves dogs. He genuinely enjoys their company. It is a delight to be around Ed and his dogs...a stroll around Knolland Farm consists of Ed talking to the dogs, petting them, playing with them, and giving them just a little more food - and Luc following right behind and taking the food away if it was up to Ed, the dogs would all be too fatEd is well-known as one of our best- dressed judges - he is always handsomely turned out - but, as I expected, in casual clothes around the farm, hes still Ed. In blue blazer or blue jeans, tennis shorts or tux, the dry sense of humor, the quick smile, the characteristic chuckle remain intact. You expect that from Ed. You expect Ed to love his dogs. You expect Ed to know good dogs. You expect Ed to breed and show dogs that win, you expect Ed to succeed. You expect that whenever Ed decides to do something, he will do it well. And you will not be disappointed.Because...Ed Jenner goes beyond expectations.JMcGSpecial thanks to Mr. Jenner for his time and for the use of the fabulous photos.14GENERALLY SPEAKiNG - SUSAN WADEMOST WHELPINGS CAN BE NORMALThis months column will be devoted to an article written by Dr.Walter Gene Thomas, DVM. Dr.Thomas is a long-time breeder of Miniature Dachshunds and has worked with a number of Toy breeders in the Bradenton- Sarasota-St. Petersburg area of Florida.Dr. Thomas passes this information along in the hope that it will be of benefit to breeders - he is not advocating owner-treatment, but hopes that by discussing this information with your veterinarian, you may be able to eliminate some of the problems in whelping your beloved Toys. The publishers usually prefer to avoid the use of trade names except when they are employed by writers who, like Dr. Thomas, are professionally qualified to recommend. Here, then, are Dr. Thomas views.rMost breeders do not give enough CALCIUM, PHOSPHORUS, and VITAMIN D to their bred bitches, but many over-do the vitamins and trace minerals. Our procedure is as followsWe start our bred bitches at about 3 weeks into pregnancy on one capsule of DICAL-D Abbott Laboratories daily. At 5 weeks pregnancy we give one capsule morning and evening. At 7 weeks pregnancy, we give one capsule morning and two capsules in the evening. If the bitch looks at this time as though she may be carrying more than four puppies - and sometimes when we are expecting only four - we give two of the capsules in the morning and two more capsules in the evening.During this time the only extra supplement we give is a VITAMIN, MINERAL, PROTEIN tablet such as UNIPET or PET TABS. We give unbred bitches 1A tablet per day, and bred bitches 1A tablet morning and 1A tablet in the evening. As soon as labor starts, we give 4 to 6 of the capsules orally and feed the bitch a large serving of chicken or beef if she is hungry. If we feel we need still more calcium and phosphorus - pains contractions not strong enough to force one of the puppies through the pelvic canal - we give 10cc of an injectible CALCIUM-PHOSPHORUS CALPHOSAN we dilute this with an equal amount of PHYSIOLOGICAL SALINE SOLUTION, then inject it under the skin with a long needle so it sill spread easily and not abscess. It can be given in two or three places and accomplish the same purpose. After the litter is whelped, we give capsules according to the size of the litter and the milking ability of the bitch. Our rule of thumb is this We allow one of the capsules for each puppy and three for the bitch. In other words,a bitch nursing four puppies would get three of the capsules in the morning and four in the evening. We have even increased this if there is any indication of ECLAMPSIA a form of convulsions, sometimes known as milk fever, due to a low calcium level in the blood. To a bitch that has had eclampsia before, we recommend giving the capsules in three divided doses and add three more capsules to the usual dose as calculated above. We have had excellent results on this regimen. We let the bitch labor until a puppy moves back to the pelvis, no matter how long this takes, and we let her rest as long as she wishes in between as long as she is fine, pups are live, and there is no evidence of excess tiring. Some breeders use another, but similar, product CAL- O-B, but I would be afraid to give as much of it as we do of the DICAL-D, as there would be too much IRON. We do not give iron and trace minerals in excessive amounts. We do not use ASCORBIC ACID Vitamin C with the capsules as we havent found it necessary, but we do add ASCORBIC ACID to our puppies diets. Some of my clients have fed too much cottage cheese in an effort to pick up the needed Calcium. Unless considerable COD LIVER OIL is fed with the cottage cheese, there is danger of kidney or bladder stone formation. We have never had any stone formation or other complications from the large doses of the product we use. Also, one can forget this too much calcium argument as long as a balanced formula of CALCIUM, PHOSPHORUS, and VITAMIN D is given, as in DICAL- D. I tried many products in the late fifties and early sixties, and found this product to do the best and most dependable job for me. It has practically ended getting up at night with ECLAMPSIA bitches. If the pelvis is large enough - and most times it is - and sufficient Calcium and Phosphorus are in the diet, most bitches will whelp normally, or with very little assistance. After recommending use of this regimen on hundreds of litters, I know it works. Oh, we have to help finish delivering an occasional puppy, but we have to do this in large breeds, too. Most of our deliveries are almost routine.I feel that many CAESARIAN SECTIONS would be avoided if a large dose of CALCIUM PHOSPHORUS were given, instead of POSTERIOR PITUITARY EXTRACT. Even when POSTERIOR PITUITARY EXTRACT is indicated - unless we are sure the CALCIUM PHOSPHORUS intake has been adequate - we give CALCIUM PHOSPHORUS first. In most cases, the puppy comes without a pituitary injection. It is a good idea to have the dams kidneys examined andor a Urinalysis made during early pregnancy, or preferably before she is bred.continued next pageThe Pom Reader April 198515Susan Wade continuedIf a chronic kidney infection is present, the bitch will have to be watched more carefully, and labor should not be allowed to proceed too long without delivery. In these cases it is sometimes better to do a Caesarian. After publication in the AMERICAN DACHSHUND of anarticle similar to the one above, Dr. Gene received a letter from a fan in California who had taken one of her bitches in labor to her vet. Her vet suggested a Caesarian, and when she asked him to give the bitch a Calcium Phosphorus injection, he said he didnt think it would help. The lady hopped into her car, drove home, got the article, and returned to the vets office. The vet gave the injection and the bitch whelped normally. It wont work this way all the time, Dr. Gene says, but in sluggish labor it is worth a try. These are Dr. Thomas views on the subject, and I know that he practices what he preaches. He and his lovely wife, Ida, are the breeders of over 50 Miniature Dachshund Champions. That statement may seem like a cliche, but it is very true. If you go to a show, maybe a few dozen people will see your beautiful Pom but announce your win in the Pom Reader, and right away you will reach Pom people in 49 states and 9 foreign countries from dedicated judges to the eager- to-learn novice looking for their first show dog. This is what advertising is all about reaching out and letting the Pom fancy know how proud you are of your dogs and your breeding program, how exciting a recent win was, how excited you are about your next litter, thanking friends who have helped you to get there advertising in The Pom Reader is the key to communication with Pom friends virtually around the world. I thought I would take this opportunity to explain a little about how to arrange your ad in the most effective way.HOW All we need to complete your ad is a good photo, a few words of text, and the correct payment. We will take care of all the rest set up the ad in the most attractive way, make sure that spelling is correct, and present a complete package honoring your pride and joy.PHOTOS There is nothing more effective than a good photo. Any photo which does your dog justice is fine, color, black white, large or small - we can increase or decrease the size to fit your ad. You may want to submit several photos, and let us pick the one that will reproduce the best. All photos will be returned with your copy of the magazine. You do not need to draw lines or make cuts on any photo submitted - if you desire only part of the photo in the ad, just make a notation on your ad copy and we will do the rest. We can crop the photo, silhouette the dog only there are several options that you have - all done by our cameras. There is no need to damage your original photo. One photo is included in the price of each ad measuring one- quarter page or larger. Additional photos in such ads, or a photo in a smaller ad will cost only 5.00 extra - but remember, the less you put in an ad, the more effective it is.AD COPY AND DESIGN The copy is the story you want to tell as a picture speaks a thousand words, you really dont need a thousand words to go along with the picture The best ads are the cleanest ads a catchy headline, your dogs name, details of wins, stud service, planned litters - thats all you really need. We can reproduce your kennel logo in your ad also, and thats always a good idea that helps us to make a very pretty, personalized ad for you. But, if youre too busy, or not sure what you want to say and how you want it to look, you can leave it up to us. Weve had a lot of experience in that field, and we will do our best to make sure your ad is complete, concise, and eye-catching. Because the prettier your ad, the prettier our magazineFULL COLOR ADS When you have a really good color photograph, you may want to consider a color ad - more expensive, but so beautiful We can put color anywhere in the magazine, and the extra charge is exactly what the process costs to us 250.00 additional per photo. That may seem like a lot of money, and it is...until the PR arrives and your Pom jumps off the page and right into the laps of the delighted readers. Then, it seems like a bargainWe can also ad a single spot color background to a black The Pom Reader April 1985white page, or set the headlines, copy, or logo in one color. This can really spark up your ad - but you may want to leave the color selection up to us...some combinations can detract from the photo of your dog, and you dont want that. Each additional accent color 50.00 this may vary somewhat - call for quote.CONTRACT ADVERTISING As a contract advertiser, you can take advantage of discounted advertising rates, and receive a free subscription, too. However, many people are confused by the term contract. We are not about to insult our Pom friends by sending out some iron-clad contractual agreement for your signature thats not the way we work. If you simply give us your word that you will take an ad each month, thats good enough for us. Then, you are a contract advertiser. As a contract advertiser, you can vary the size of the ad i.e. you can bounce up to a full-page ad for a special announcement one month, go down to a 116 page for the next, a one-half page the following month, whichever works best for you or the content of the ad each month one dog one month, another the next, etc., and still benefit from the contract rates. This way, your name and bloodline are in the public eye each month, and you can economically remain in the spotlight of the breed.DEADLINES Joe QsitAcas are getting to be so good, that we can leave the deadlines right where they are, and still get the job done the deadline for ads is the tenth of the month preceding publication date i.e. June 10th for the July issue. That doesnt leave us a lot of free time, and if you can get the ad to us before that time, that helps. But get it to us by the tenth, and we will get you into the next issue. We work fast, but your consideration is appreciated. Now, if youre still not sure how advertising can be of benefit to you, think of those friends who do advertise how did we meet those friends in the first place We saw their names and faces, their dogs, and knew them...even before meeting them in person. The PR depends upon advertising for its life - it is what keeps the magazine going, allows us to come into your lives once a month. The amount of advertising determines the size of the magazine, and the more advertising we have, the more room we have for health tips, special features, all the things that make the Pom Reader the Number One Location for The Latest News and Greatest Views of Poms and their PeopleThanksDuane Doll, Business ManagerBonner bred male for sale - 212 years, Champion sire dam, 6 show points - proven, aggressive stud.Tim Sue Pomeranians19719 Rice Lake Lane, Houston, TX 77084 _____________713-492-0849_____________Home ofCH. While there, information was received that production of the Pug Slide Show was in progress in the basement, and permission was granted for me to attend. The experience was invaluable, enabling me now to know what is involved to make a faster, less complicated show. The AKC wants slides instead of pictures, and although pictures can be made into slides, they would rather not take the time and expense to do this themselves. To cut this process, members of the national Pub Club had sent in over 200 slides. On a long table were a couple of round slide holders, each able to contain 140 slides. A holder was placed in a large viewer, and images appeared on the white wall, with culling and commentary taking place. Each picture represented a point in the standard, head studies, tails, backs, and full figures. Most of the Pugs were on a table with an out-of-doors background preferred. The lead was visible but nothing else, except the dog which was centered in the picture. Some pictures were culled when feet were too near the bottom as later framing would hide them. All pictures must be diagonal, no vertical ones will be used. One was discarded because the table lines slanted. If the Pom breeders will take slides illustrating good points in the standard, and send these to me, being aware of the qualifications mentioned, we can be on the final production at the 1986 Specialty, where the Pub Club now is. No credits will be given, but everybody will have a chance to have their own Pom on a multi-viewed national film.Get to workDorothy Bonner26093 Highway 281 N., San Antonio, TX 78260BI-MARHOME OF MULTIPLE B.I.S.CH. I love my home, I love my life, but, you know, once in a while, you get to wondering how the other half lives. And who is the other half Well, half of the time, on the street, people ask my mom, Is that a Pomeranian and she replies, no, thats a Pekingese. And I have a friend, Pam, who IS a Pom, and she tells me half the time, on the street, people ask HER mom, Is that a Pekingese, and HER mom replies, NO, THIS ISA POMERANIAN And so I figure that my other half has to be a PomSo, okay, once in a while I think about being the other half. Sitting around being imperial all the time can get to be, after a while, too much of a good thing. And I think of Pam. She gets to jump off of the couch which Pekes are not supposed to do.. And she gets to stand on her hind legs which Pekes are not supposed to do..But most of the time, it doesnt bother me. That is, it didnt until one recent day. Some time back, My mom sent my story to two men who publish magazines. The story told how I grew from 8 ounces and near death, to a sparkling 6 pounds of parti-color Pekingese. I got so many calls and letters about how I was doing, that, in some way, I wanted to thank Duane and Joe for publishing my story. I was afraid I would never get the chance, seeing as they live in Florida, and I live in Brooklyn. But luck was on my side.Last February, I overheard my aunt Marilyn and my mom Nancy discussing what to wear to meet Joe and Duane - they were coming to New York for the Pom Specialty. Here was my chance I did my very best dance, my very best star pose, but my mom said, Oh, Jack, honey, you cant go. This is only for PomsSitting there amid much whooshing of perfume and brushing of human hair, I got to thinking about Pam the Pom. I supposed she would be there. And from what I had heard about Joe Duane, if THEY were going to be there, it must be going to be fun. And so, right then and there, I decided to go to the Pom show - but some homework was in order. If I wanted to get into the Pom show, I would certainly have to look like a Pom.i went upstairs into the bathroom, and as S had seen my Mom shave her legs countless times, knew I could handle it.i shaved my legs, cut my ear fringes, stuck toothpicks in my ears and sprayed them with hair spray so they would stand up, and off I ventured to New York City.I left the toothpicks in my ears, as when I arrived at the show, would have plenty of time to take them out. The only problem I could foresee now was the fact that my face is absolutely flat and a Poms was pointed like a fox. While walking, and oh, boy, it was some walk, I thought and thought. Perhaps I could buy a set of those funny glasses with the plastic nose and mustacheunder the nose. I could remove the mustache part.A trucker picked me up when he saw my hobo stick with my red bandanna of belongings flung over my shoulder, i only had my grooming brush, a banana I love bananas, and some coins with me, as I would be home the same day.As i approached the hotel where the show was, I saw many Poms going in. I never saw a parti-colored one, and my heart sank a little. There is always a first time for everything, however look atthose dogs with all the wrinkles.I was determined to meet Joe and Duane. It wasnt show time yet, and I wandered about in the front of the hotel, when all of a sudden I saw it. There in front of me was an ice cream parlor I went in and bought an ice cream cone.I ate the ice cream and saved the cone, for that would be my Pom nose for the show I was really on a roll now. Nothing could stop me.As I practiced with the cone, I discovered if I inhaled, the cone would stay on my face if I didnt breathe out, as my face is flat and it made a perfect seal. The next group of Poms that went in, I simply got in line with them and no one noticed. There I was at last, inside the room with many, many Poms. I went off to sit in a corner hoping not to be noticed. No one gave me a second glance.I scanned the room looking for Joe and Duane, but couldnt find them. I finally found Pam, the real Pom, and rushed over to hide behind her. Pam was startled, to say the least, and hissed What on earth are you doing here in that get-up I was starting to panic. When the announcer said the show was to begin, everyone started to get real nervous and brushed everything in sight. Poms were being put up and down from the many grooming tables. There was such a flurry of fur ever- where, I was accidentally picked up and put on a grooming table next to Pam. We both were being groomed, and that was just fine until Pam discovered that my nose was really an ice cream cone. Pam loves ice cream cones - she bit off the end of my noseconeNow, all was really lost. The charade was over, my nose was eaten. I hadnt even met Joe and Duane. My whole life was in shambles. I heard my heart break into a million pieces. All of a sudden, there seemed to be many people around me as the tears streamed down my face. Everyone was trying to comfort me. Then I looked up to see who was holding me and petting me, telling me everything was going to be just fine....I discovered that I was being held by Duane and being talked to by Joe.They took me to the waiting arms of my Mom, and I had to admit - as much as I always wanted to travel and see how the other half lives, I was greatly relieved. I am in agreement with the Lib group on one thing and that is Equal recognition for equal performance. Dont you think the female canines deserve equal statusHow many breeders advertise the producing record of their bitches There are plenty of ads for the stud dog and his progeny, even to congratulating new Champion offspring. A stud dogs fame depends on the quality of the bitches bred to him. I have seen many ads regarding litters for sale, using the name of the stud, and the dam will be listed as the daughter of such and such a Champion. Why isnt her registered name used Quite a few top-producing dams are not Champions. In fact, out of the 171 Cocker Spanial dams who have qualified as Top Producers since 1965, fifty-three are not Champions. Why not give them fair and equal publicity For, in my opinion, no kennel is worth more than its brood bitches.I receive many requests from owners who want me to recommend a stud dog.I am usually told the breed of the female but never enough pertinent facts, such as her age, breeding, has she had a litter If so, by whom How many puppies, their physical condition, etc.I do not recommend a specific cog. I will submit a list of breeders whom I have found to be co-operative and honest. All arrangemengs are left to be made by the owners. One of the funniest requests came from a lady who said she owned a Dachshund bitch and she wanted to breed her to a male who was whelped under the sign of Taurus, as she thought she would have better luck selling the puppies. She didnt say whether the stud dog had to be the same breed as her bitch, nor did she mention the variety of her bitch. All she wanted were the names and addresses of owners who had male dogs born in that periodMy husband and I have completed twelve books on Top Producers of a variety of breeds. We feel the dog fancy is blessed with hundreds of sincere, conscientious and dedicated breeders. If this werent so, I would not have the long list of sires and dams who qualify each year as Top Producers. They must produce offspring of sufficient quality to merit a Championship under a number of judges. Some bitches will have Champions in every litter regardless of the sire, but most often there will be some relationship among the grandparents. In our books, the Champion offspring are listed under the name of the opposite parent. The grandparents names for the opposite parent are given along with the AKC number, stud book date, and the dogs color. This information gives the reader some idea as to what bloodlines nick. It is very interesting to review the matings of a prominent stud dog that has produced 50-100 Champions and study the pedigrees of the dams bred to him.A studs pedigree must be studied and this must include some knowledge of the dogs ancestors. What major and minor faults did they have What about their temperament Could they perform the service for which they were bred A bitch exerts her influence only on her own litters, which mnay be four or five in her lifetime, whereas, a stud dog that is used extensively because of his fantastic show record, may sire 200 litters or more. It is possible that he could change the appearance of the entire breed. The faults that may suddenly make their appearance were not visible in the stud dog, but were present in his grandparents. The question often asked by breeders is, Will there be betterSchlintzpuppies produced through in-breeding, or through line-breeding It takes a book on the principles of breeding to answer such a question. In-breeding is the method by which the highest possible percentage of the blood of an exceptional individual or of a particularly fortunate nick can be preserved and ultimately made to characterize an entire line of descendants. An inbred animal is, of course, enormously prepotent over everything else. Its half of the ancestry being largely of identical blood, is almost certain to dominate the offspring. It has been said that breeders who strive mainly for show-ring quality and are so intent on producing winning dogs that they regularly in-breed.This doubling-up process affects all characteristics of the individuals involved, bad as well as good. This method of in-breeding, which aims at making the greatest use possible of pedigrees, has been followed alike by the most strikingly successful results, as well as by the most stupendous disasters in the breeding business. The female is the mold out of which all life is reproduced, and should exert the greater influence on the offspring. Good bitches are equally as important as good studs.I would suggest that specialty shows consider the Stud Dog and Brood Bitch Class the most important at the show, and they should be judged exclusively on the quality of their get. It is the opportunity for breeders to make comparisons. I would like to recommend that the entry fee be lowered for these two classes to incude a larger entry. The goal of dog shows should be to benefit dog breeding. The following charts contain the names of the sires and dams who qualified in 1984 as Top Producers under my system. The sires must have five Champion offpsring whose names have been published in the AKC Gazette beginning wwith the March issue through the February issue of the following year. In 1956, I used this same time when I started the Phillips Rating System, as all of that years All Breed Shows were published during that period. Dams are required to have three Champion offspring whose names are published during the same period as the sires. Once qualified, a continuous record is kept.In the charts you will find the year the dog first qualified, the total number of Champions produced and the number produced in the current year. Many of the dogs are second to eighth generation Top Producers, and we have the records on all of these generations.I was amazed this year to find breeds that were seldom represented in a list of Top Producers suddenly coming to the fore, and other breeds that were consistently found high on the list of Top Producers suddenly being at the bottom of the list. The Toy Breeds have never let their size interfere with their temperament, showmanship, attractiveness, and appeal. Most dog fanciers felt that a Toy Breed could never compete with Sporting, Hound, or Working breeds, that the latter, with two litters, could have more puppies than a Toy dam could have in a lifetime. Not soIn 1965, my first annual report indicated that the Toys didnt do too well, hence the above feeling. Only seven sires and ten dams qualified in 1965, but over the years it has increased and in 1984 there were 41 sires and 46 dams who made the Top Producers list.Best of all, CH. As most all serious Pomeranian fanciers are, in one way or another, involved in campaigning their Poms for AKC Championship points, we feel that it is important to keep tabs on the Pomeranian doings in this area. The procedures for tallying the point scale are as followsThe source for all points is the official show awards book of the AKC Gazette. Only this publication will be used for point credits. Exhibitors are credited with all AKC Championship points won in the Gazette year, and published monthly according to appearance in the Gazette. As keeping track of each and every AKC show in the United States is an onerous task accomplished diligently by AKC, many times the actual show dates will vary from the date of publication i.e.- a September show may not be published until November.. The Gazette year, as a rule, runs from about October of the previous year until September of the present calendar year.Point are allotted to THE REGISTERED OWNER OF THE DOG AT THE TIME OF COMPETITION.
