Contents Oh, yes, I recommend you to everybody because I think you are just fabulous. Contents Oh yes, I even wrapped it up just so, and attached the custom stickers to it just like you like it. I am always happy to help RealFast Delivery. Contents Well, there are tomatoes in it. I said tomatoes. Tomatoes. Oh, all right, its tomatoes Im sending my mother tomatos for Christmas. Maam, would you please stop laughing. Excuse me, maam, but I think thats rude. Dont choke over the telephone. Lady, would you cut it out Im not finding this at all humorous...Thats how it went. You try to do something nice, and some jerks laugh, but if you know the kind of gift people really will appreciate, you send it - no matter what anybody else thinks. So gifts, and mothers, and laughing are the bywords for December. Lots of my best experiences have had to do with gifts, mothers, and laughter.Or sisters. My sisters Liz, Mary, and Totsy got some strange gifts from me over the years. You see, I always held these women up, up on a pedestal they were the finest sisters a guy could have had, and I felt that extraordinary ladies such as these should be given the world, or at least be showered with rubies, and diamonds, and pearls, lots of nice things. Well, I dont know your financial situation in the first or second grade, but my allowance could not quite purchase much global real estate, nor could it cover many real diamonds, rubies, pearls. This might have been cause for great concern to me, had I not made a discovery the cheap store that sold things that were pretty to me, and to no one else. I couldnt quite believe the baubles and bangles and beads contained within the plastic showcase - surely I must be dreaming And all were quite easily within the reach of a first gradersbudget. And, unfortunately, worth every penny that they cost. For several years, I gave my indulgent sisters these ugly gems, and they always made a fuss over them How beautiful, how nice. And then never quite managed to find just the right outfit to augment with their new semi precious stuff. And so I usually forgot the gem itself, recalling only their delight in receiving my latest offering. So it was quite traumatic for me when the whole thing came to a head, many years later we were all in a restaurant, and a lady walked by wearing a really repulsive outfit -1 mean, she looked real cheap. And Totsy remarked, That looks like something Joey gave us for Christmas. And again about mothers we are very pleased to share with you this month an offering from my friend Sandy Wheat. About Mothers. Read it. Thank you, Sandy. Speaking of gifts and mothers and gems, and we were at one point, my second mother once told me a real gem, and its one of my favorite stories. Many of you have met my second mother shes been to the Garden with me several times Betsy McGar Mrs. Howard Stoughton. And one of you knows her very well, or did. Betsy and Jessie Young were roommates at prep school...a couple of years ago. Anyhow, at one point, Betsy and her circle of Darien, CT friends were a most interesting bunch young mothers all, upwardly mobile, in a time we have all come to think of as Camelot everything was rosy. During bridge one night, the subject of lousy gifts came up, and...suddenly there was a challenge, a contest. The contest To come up with The Gift Least Likely To Please A Mother. They ran around for months, picking and re-picking, trying to come up with the perfect entry then, it was time for the competition to take place. When the dust finally cleared, I am most pleased to report that Betsy won. Her entry The Gift Least Likely To Please A Mother an ironing board cover.A gift to me. Jessie, you can give me a gift. You can drop a line to Betsy. Right now Betsy needs that. And I thank you.A gift to all of you. If you didnt notice it already, thats okay, but now you will.We have, as of last months Issue, upgraded the paper used for the cover of the Pom Reader, and also upgraded the quality of the stock used inside. Ms. Bartley is an AKC judge and Toy breeder and her thoughts and processes for the whelping of puppies of any breed are valid and good. I hope that this article will be of assistance to novices and experienced breeders alike, for once again as I have mentioned, there is always more to learn. Occasionally I will add thoughts parenthetically to assist the novice reader to understand things that the experienced breeder may take for granted. And now here is Part OneBefore getting to the heart of this important undertaking, lets assume you have done your homework prior to this event. Your bitch as been checked to ascertain that she is free of all parasites prior to the mating, all her innoculations are current, and you have had her checked by your vet who has given her a complete exam, including her pelvis. He has advised you that a he feels she is capable of whelping normally, or b that a C-section is advisable or necessary. If it is the latter, he will be prepared if it is the former now is the time for you to get prepared, if you are a newcomer in this endeavor. It is always advisable to alert your vet when the bitch shows the firsi signs of labor as there is always the possibility of unexpected problems. Personally, I would not use a vet who is not receptive to this idea even if a normal whelping is indicated. An alternate plan would be to ask an experienced breederfriend to be available or if possible be with you as this may serve to assure you or give you needed confidence. The normal period of gestation may range from 58-63 days, however, it may even be 64-65. If after the 63rd day from the last mating the bitch has shown no signs of impending labor it is advisable to have her re-examined by the vet. An experienced breeder may give an opinion, but here it is very important to seek the advice and experience of a veterinarian. At this point perhaps if we understand the reproductive system of the bitch, the prodecure and process will be easier to understand. The uterus is like an inverted U with the actual birth canal coming in a straight line up into the center of the inverted U. The sides of the uterus are called horns, and this is where the puppies are carried and nourished. TheThe Pom Reader December 1985placenta is attached to the walls of the uterus it is through the placenta that the developing puppies receive their nourishment and oxygen. Normally a placenta in either horn is freed first, and this puppy moves into the birth canal via the contractions. At this point the oxygen supply from the placenta is limited and it is imperative the puppy be delivered, the sac ruptured and removed from the face and the puppy forced to breathe on its own. This is where we who have taken the responsibility of being the factor behind the mating must get very much involved. It is all but impossible for those who raise the flat-faced breeds Pekes, Pugs, Brussels Griffons, Affenpinschers, Boston Terriers and Bulldogs to wait and see if the bitch can accomplish the sac removal and severing of the pacenta weve learned it is almost impossible for them to do so. If they can, it is an exception rather than the norm. In all the past years we had but one bitch who did it on her own and she resented any help[It is important to note here that whelping problems and the inability to care for the neonatal puppy is not confined to above-mentioned breeds problems can occur in any dog at any time. I have assisted in sections on big, chunky mutts who had one dead pup blocking everything up, just as I have seen bitches of numerous breeds literally not know what to do with their newborns. Always be prepared for that possilibity in any breed.]Our procedure was to introduce the expectant bitch to her whelping box at least two weeks prior to her due date. This was kept in our bedroom. The bitch had free access to it at all times and was confined in it at night, contd next pageWHELPING continued[There are several good dog books with sections on building your own whelping box or pen. Also, some people use cardboard boxes. This is no longer advisable in our modern age of heavy pesticide use in storage warehouses. Regardless os what was in the box, they often spray the whole area, so you never know what may have permeated your cardboard whelping box. ElphaSun Kennels in Florida offers this idea We would never in a million years use a box from the grocery store, but years ago hit on what we think is the perfect set-up, something almost everyone owns, anyway. The top of an airline crate. With bedding and a heating pad, its about the perfect size for Toys, yet the lip on the front of the crate keeps the pups in when they are very young. An added attraction is the grate on the sides, which provide a bonus...a wimdow. My bitches lay outside the crate, yet constantly look through the window to see what the pups are up to.For the perimeter of the whelping area we have custom built 4x4 pens, but an X-pen will do - provided the pups cannot squeeze through the wire.]Labor - many people ask How will I know when she is going into labor Keep in mind that not all bitches go through the same stages nor follow a set procedure. Often as not, the same bitch does not necessarily do the same thing with each litter they like to keep us on our toes and ever alert. The usual procedure is for a bitch to scratch and dig at her bedding, arranging it to her satisfaction, often more than once and sometimes several days in a row before getting into actual labor. Not ALL bitches do this so dont count on this being a sure sign. Some bitches may go into labor with NO outward sign, however this would be an exception and not a normal procedure.Usually on the day or night of the actual whelping the bitch will refuse all food, even her favorite tidbits. Again, this is not a sure sign Ive also had them eat a full meal and beg for more just a few hours prior to delivering that first puppy.A usual third indication of impending labor is that her temperature will drop. This may occur 12-24 hours prior to whelping. A dogs normal temperature is 101. It can drop as much as 10-15 before returning to normal where it remains during actual labor. This is one of the most reliable indications that whelping is near.[A dogs normal temp can actually range from 101-102.5. It is best for those inexperienced with whelping to begin taking your bitches temp daily for one week or so BEFORE she is actually due so you can ascertain what normal is. Close to the expected time of delivery begin taking it twice daily or you may miss the drop in temperature. The average bitch drops to approximately 98 some never go below 100, and some really drop in temp. That is why it is important for novice breeders to be very aware or you may miss this important clue to impending whelping.]Other indications are restlessness, panting andor labored breathing. The eyes sometimes become moist and glassy appearing and may take on a blank or staring expression. The bitch may become startled by even normal noises such as the closing of a door, a ringing phone, a radio or television, running water or other dogs barking.A few days preceeding delivery you may notice mucous at the opening of the vulva, then on the day of the whelping she will pass what is termed a mucous plug. This is an unusually large glob of mucous and may be clear, creamy colored or spotted with blood. If you have not braided her skirts, trimmed them off, or taken other steps to easily see her rear end, you may miss this telling sign. We normally trimmed the skirts short as the bitch will lose them when she is through with all the care of the babies anyway. This also makes certain a baby wont get entangled in them later. Back in our early days, while at the vets, a Maltese breeder came in with a half-dead puppy tangled in the dams skirts. The breeder stated that she had only been gone one hour the poor puppy lost a leg as the skirts were so firmly wrapped around it that the circulation had been cut off. I silently thought she had to have been gone half a day, but our vet said no, with such a tiny baby it could have occurred in only a few hours. After that, we always trimmed our skirts offWell, this concludes Part I of this series on whelping. A hearty thanks to Ms. Bartley for presenting the staff at the Pom Reader with so detailed an article. I hope all of you, novice and experienced alike, can gain from her experiences and comments. The kids got so excited when they saw me for the first time. I thought they would never put me down. I remember how scared I was being passed from small hands to small hands. They had a real good grip on me, I surely do remember thatNow the kids are grown and gone and its just me and a few others like me, that remain to keep mom and dad relatively active. Sometimes Im left at home while the younger ones go off to the shows, but I had my day once, too. The baths, the nail clipping, ears cleaned, the endless and exhausting brushing and the weight checks. A few extra yummies this week to round me out, or take away the bowl too soon to lessen the belly bulge the next week. I always found a way to soften their hearts during dinner or a TV movie and got the extra tidbits and I never once squealed on any of them. I got more that wayNow, Im not interested in extra food or an extra snack, just an extra pat and continued love that I have received over the years. Seems that I am just too tired to get off my bed lately. Oh, I remember... almost lost by bed completely when I was younger. No matter where I was placed at night, I had a habit of chewing. The money these people put out for my bad habits...seems as thought those kidsalways had new shoes back then, but that was my fault - they sure were soft and chewy, just like my bed, the furniture, and especially the carpet. Now that I think of it, the leather seats in the car werent too bad either, along with the groceries that were so generously left in the car with me. Now with no safe place to keep me, I was left in the bathroom at night. My family screamed when they couldnt find the wallpaper on the walls, and the woodwork and doors were ruined, not to mention the messes I deposited on the floor. A crate was a mustThe vet bills had to be nasty that first year of my immature puppy life. The shots, the health checks, oh the stomach aches I got. Was it the food or all the extras I devoured that first year It didnt matter, it just meant another trip to the veterinarian for a shot and pills to be crammed down my throat three times a day. My family had a few tricks to get the pills to go down easy. Wrap the pills with treats or smash them into my food, but soon I taught them how smart I was when they found the pills were the only thing left in my bowl.Seems as though I am taking more pills these days. Mainly for the pain. The walks we took, the traveling we had done, the balls I have fetched, the intruders I chased, the friends we have met along lifes path. Yes, the years come and go, and with it comes joy, fear, happiness, loneliness, tears and sadness, but even though I have loved my life with you, my loving family, it is time for me to go. Time to say goodbye. Ive left you with many memories of me, both good and bad. Albums of photos with all the kids, yours and mine, I have given you happiness and you have given it in return. A final good-bye is always sad, but Im tired, Im old, and my patience is running thin.Love me as I was, forgive me for what I am today. My beauty is only within. My grace and attentiveness have since left with my sore and ailing bones.I love you. Thank you for letting me be your friend, protector, companion, and most of all, a member of the family for so many years. Her keeper said, Yes, and the way is hard you will be older before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning. But the young dam was not sure she was so happy, she could not believe that anything could be better than these years. She played with her young, chasing, teasing along the way, and bathed with them in the clear streams. The sun shone on them life was good. The young dam cried, Nothing will ever be lovelier than this. Then night came with storm, the path was dark, the young shook with fear and cold. The young dam cuddled them with her fur. The young said Oh mother, we are not afraid, for you are near no harm will come. The young dam said, This is better than the brightness of the day, for I have taught them courage. Then morning came. There was a hill ahead. The young climbed and they grew weary. The young dam was weary, but she said to them Have a little patience. The young climbed when they reached the top they said, We couldnt have done it without you, Mother. When she lay down that night, the moon and stars above, the young dam said, This is a better day than the last, for my young have learned fortitude in the face of adversity. Yesterday I gave them courage. Today I have given them strength. The next day brought strange clouds that darkened the earth - clouds of war, hate, and evil. The young groped and stumbled. The young dam said, Look up, lift your eyes to the light. The young looked up and saw above the clouds an everlasting glory. It guided them beyond the darkness. That night the young dam said, This is the best day of all, for I have shown them God.And the days went on, the weeks, the months, the years, and the young dam grew older. She was gray, but her young were mature and strong, and walked with courage. When the way was hard and rough, they helped their aging mother. At last they came to a hill beyond the hill they could see a shining road, and the Golden Gates open wide. The aging dam said, I have come to the end of my journey. Now I truly know that the end is better than the beginning, for my young can walk alone, and their young after them. The young said, You will always walk with us, mother, even when you have gone through the gates. They stood and watched as she went on alone they watched their dam until the gates closed after her. And the young said, We can no longer see her, but she is with us still. A mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence. And the young carried on.In dedication to my mother at 82 years of age, and also to our hard-working dams around the world who have given us hope and joy.The Pom Reader December 1985Sandy Satoko Wheat November 198515fommist KzHHttsDick Sally Baugniet Phone 414-755-299411224 County Hwy. As most all serious Pomeranian fanciers are, in one way or another, involved in campaigning their Poms for AKC Championship points, we feel that it is important to keep tabs on the Pomeranian doings in this area. The procedures for tallying the point scale are as followsThe source for all points is the official show awards book of the AKC Gazette. Only this publication will be used for point credits. Exhibitors are credited with all AKC Championship points won in the Gazette year, and published monthly according to appearance in the Gazette. As keeping track of each and every AKC show in the UnitedStates is an onerous task accomplished diligently by AKC, many times the actual show dates will vary from the date of publication i.e.- a September show may not be published until November.. The Gazette year, as a rule, runs from about October of the previous year until September of the present calendar year.Points are allotted to THE REGISTERED OWNER OF THE DOG AT THE TIME OF COMPETITION.Statistician Susan Wade. We take our charges around the ring, put them on the table, around the ring again, and hopefully accept our ribbons. What do you do next If you are waiting for the Group, you could have several hours to kill. If you are not special- ing a dog, then you are finished until the next day. In these days of cluster shows you can have from three to seven shows in a single location. You can, of course, watch judging, but you must admit that after a few hours you need a break. So you can groom, eat, sleep, ...or shop SHOPPING has become the single most popular hobby among women over three years of age. Just remember the first time you had your own nickel or dime, or quarter, or dollar depending upon your generation. That feeling of power That knowledge that you and you alone could make a decision that in all probability would satisfy only yourself. At least in my case this was true.My mom always wanted me to save my nickels whoops, I mean dollars for a rainy day. The only trouble with that logic was that when it did rain, she wouldnt let me go out Nevertheless, we women have developed the fine art of SHOPPING to a high level of expertise and satisfaction. You can shop on any level, starting at the booths at the shows, but the dedicated shoppers know the real challenge is finding the ultimate bargain...the 200.00 dress for 29.95. Dont let anyone fool you, Chevrolet and apple pie dont even come close. The real American Dream, we all know, is buying the best for less than anyone else, and then telling them about it laterAs you travel around from city to city you begin to locate and commit to memory every outlet mall within 50 miles of the show site. When you are a serious shopper, you arrange beforehand with your co-spenders to rent a car so a moment will not be wasted. You all gather, load up and off you go, plastic card warming in your hot little hand. After several hours of general shopping, you are ready for the big time. You become selective. This is the real test. Quite often after much research for which Visa sends you Thank You Cards you can find outlets no one else even thought of and believe me, your only limitation is your time and his money. There are outlets for Mushrooms, desserts not candy-just desserts, tools, sox, pecans, grandfather clocks, wine, glasses the drinking variety, handkerchiefs, potato chips, and on and on. Now, a lot of outlet stores sell these items among others but the ones mentioned above are the only merchandise sold in each respective store. Neat, huhAs you can see, I have dedicated many hours and miles to the pursuit of outlet information, and I must admit I am a charter member of SHOPPERS ANONYMOUS. I have a veryThe Pom Reader December 1985dear friend who even outdoes me in this area, frequently using the parking lot at an outlet mall to park in overnight on her way to shows. She says it is easier than tracking down a campground, but I know the real reason is to be the first in the stores in the morning When you reach this level of expertise, your husband will often question your motives - especially when the monthly bills arrive. Your answer should always be a patriotic one...after all, you and your shopping friends are doing your part to keep the American ecomony healthy. So, at the next set of shows you attend, hurry up, show your dog, and then get on with your job...spend that moneylDCharlotte Patterson606 Sea View Circle, Destin, FL 32541ARTWORK BY CHRIS HEARTZ\jAococaPUT YOUR SHOW PHOTO HEREPUT YOUR DOGS NAME HERE YOUR WIN INFORMATION HERE,YOUR NAME HERE-and put the savings in your pocketPRICE 18.00STORKREPORTTELL EVERYONE ABOUT YOUR NEWEST LITTER OF SHOW-STOPPERSSubmit date of birth, sire dam, how many males females, your name, address phone. Pirogue was the mode of travel here after Hurrican Juan did a Mexican hat dance on New Orleans. He left half of the city under water fortunately not our half and really messed things up for the Metairie Kennel Club, which cancelled its show due to the nasty weather.I usually dont use my column as a soapbox, but the holiday season usually brings out something which is a sore point with me...selling puppies at Christmas. I personally cant think of a worse time to try to bring a young puppy into a household. People are rushing all over, there are parties with forbidden food and substances all within reach of an inquisitive puppy, along with the dangers of electrical cords from tree lights and treated water in the tree itself. Loud noises, flashing lights, and late hours make Christmas an absolute nightmare for a young one thrust into a new home away from the comforts of moather and littermates.By nature I am a picky person when it comes to placing puppies, but if I had to sell at Christmastime, Id be extra careful in screening potential buyers. At this time of year, people are likely to buy a puppy for the wrong reasons. People at Christmas tend to buy on impulse, not taking the time to realize that a puppy is a living creature and not a toy. A puppy is not a teaching tool designed to instill responsibility in a young child. I never sell a puppy to a family with a child under the age of 8, because Ive always felt that until a child reaches that age, he is simply unable to properly relate to a smaller creature, and I dont want any pup of mine to suffer having ears pulled, being teased or tormented in any way, and young children can and often do this without realizing thay they are causing pain.Id make sure the buyers know exactly what they are getting into with giving a live puppy...there are problems which go along with each breed. Puppies of any breed will have accidents...puddles and little piles on rugs...spit-ups and chewed objects. Fleas and worms can cause initial health problems. There is also upkeep...are they willing to spend time grooming the dog Do they realize that there will be ongoing expenses - vet bills, licenses, costs for food, etc. There is also the responsibility of making sure that the puppy does not present a legal problem personal injury claims as well as damaged or destroyed neighborhood property asswellas their own. Id make sure any potential buyers understood the whole scope on giving a live gift. One way to sell Christmas pups and still retain your peace of mind is to get the buyer to agree not to take the puppy into its new home until AFTER the first of the year. If the buyer has the ups best interests at heart, I cant see them objecting to this. Inform the buyer that puppies are BABIES and can easily become frightened in the mad rush of the holidays. Common sense says that a puppy will adjust more easily to a new home when the atmosphere is quiet.Heres hoping all your Christmas babies find excellent homes or become ChampionsWishing everyone a safe and sane holiday season, I hope to see you all next yearDKathy Verdi Masilla969 Porteous St., New Orleans, LA 70124mm mmiMtmjPet PortraitsThe Pom Reader December 198525 LETTERS Dear Mr. McGinnis,I received my first of twelve issues. Well see you there Thanks again for your supportYours truly,JoeDear JoeI just wanted to take a few moments to tell you how happy I am to have discovered the Pom Reader You have no idea how much self-control it takes when I pick up the mail not to stop the car then and there to read it Your publication is just great. I subscribed three months ago and enjoy each and every page - many times over, what with our cold temperatures at times minus 40 - 60 degrees and LONG winter nights about 2Vi to 3 hours of daylight during December. As we are off the beaten track it is pure delight to go over your photos, comparing, marveling, and just plain enjoying lovely Poms.I began raising Poms in Southeast Alaska about ten years ago, then moved to North Pole about a year ago. I must admit life in the Far North is a bit hard, particularly in the winter, but the Poms do well better than I, and it is such fun to watch them frolic in the snow when the temperature goes UP TO ZERO...they figure summer is here for sure. Shoveling trails for them is a neverending task. It doesnt take much time to high-center a 4 or 5 pound Pom, not to mention the puppies who usually begin going outside for very brief visits by 10 weeks in the winter time.Again thanks for brightening our days with your lovely publication. Keep up the good work.Sincerely,Coleen McFarland North Pole, AlaskaDear Coleen,Thank you for one of the nicest letters I have ever received. Anyone can breed dogs - it really isnt difficult - but breeding dogs and being a Breeder with a capital B are a whole different ballgame. Becoming a Breeder is a commitment, and one that is not to be taken lightly. It means responsibility, acquiring knowledge, setting firm goals, and completely understanding just what is expected of a Breeder It is costly, it is time- consuming, and it is frustrating. It means studying, reading everything you can get your hands on about your own breed and just dogs in general, keeping records, making files that will have your cabinet bulging. You must study your chosen breeds history and what you can expect from that breed you must learn to deal with the heartbreaks, of which there will be many. Revel in your achievements, of which there can be all too few. This is a lifetime involvement if taken seriously - an undending search for perfection which will never come. Though you know perfection will never be attained, you will strive for that near-perfect specimen and you will learnYou must have the intelligence to understand the Standard of your breed why is a particular point required, or that angle desired - you must respect the Standard and you must apply it. You breed to the standard, not try to change the Standard to fit your breeding Each mating you arrange is another brick to extend your walkway through the dog world. Will it be a good, firm brick, or one that is crumbly around the edges Every mating must be done with the purpose of improving your breed and should never be undertaken without a great deal of thought and consideration - after all, the result of these breedings is your future.I would like to quote Mr. John B. MacKinnon a Canadian Breeder The challenge does not begin in the show ring. The challenge begins with the Breeder. I agree with Mr. MacKinnon - the show ring is the Breeders stage and their marketplace. Here is where we can see what we have done If we, as Breeders, do not live up to the Standard of quality required for the show ring, if we breed and exhibit dogs of mediocre quality, we will contribute to the downfall of the purebred dog. If we breed to the top winner because it is the top winner, if we enter less than good quality dogs in The Pom Reader December 1985shows, dont be surprised when you see dogs of lesser quality advertising their wins People who breed dogs for omy a snort time abound in the dog world. Look around - the number of really dedicated, long-time breeders seem fewer in numbers. If you are willing to give up the time to study and apply what you learn, if you are willing to make ^ sacrifices and heartbreaking decisions, ifyou are willing to dig in your heels to prevent another rush to breed to the top dog -c without sound reasoning, if you are willingto stand up for your breed and keep within your Standard...come join us We certainly cant promise you success, power, or BIS, but we can promise the satisfaction and fulfillment that comes with doing a good job in your chosen breedSusan Wade Route 1, Box 340, Auburndale, FL 33823rntAll Things Bright and Beautiful All Creatures Great and Small All Things Wise and Wonderful The Lord God Made Them All.BANDBOX POMS NANCY FOREST BARTHOLOMEW SR.501-489-5733Rt. 1, Box 182 OLA, AR 72853Ch.
