Olga Darrell Baker were in Florida recently, and it is no exaggeration when I say that Olga looked absolutely stunning. At one point Olga, Sharon Griffin Dwier, and PR publisher Duane Doll were seen standing ringside, trading Christmas stories of dubious spiritual value. I ran up to get a photo of this collection of characters, but the combined brilliance of their personalities, or something, broke the camera and, alas, we have no proof that they were, indeed, laughing at my story about how the angel got on top of the Christmas tree. Youll have to ask one of them about it I only tell that story once every five years and never in front of my mother.Got a nice letter from Lillian Ulisney. This month we return to the scene of the crime...The Last Two Shows of the Year. A major entry right on the nose, and Kicki needing just one major to finish. Well, Kickis BreederOwnerHandlers were understandably nervous as they approached the ring. Would the major hold It held. As Kicki emerged victorious from the puppy class, a palpable sense of doom permeated the area. As Kicki was awarded the points to finish her Championship, all eyes rolled heavenward as if to say Here we go again Back in the grooming tent the exhibitors gathered around. What do we do now, they queried. If you pull Kicki the major will break. If you show her, youll probably win. It is surely a dilemna Again the BreederOwnerHandlers went into a huddle should they take the chance again Could they endure another experience like the one they had last year The decision was made to let Kicki stay with the other exhibitors, and the BreederOwnerHandlers returned home to celebrate with Coco.But the celebration did not last long. Reports trickled in that very same day. Did you see Kicki She wouldnt even walk...She looked just awful Not even groomed...Last in her class...Disgusting Oh, well, thought the BreederOwnerHandlers, we guess it doesnt matter, someone else got a major and Kickis already a champion.But they spoke too soon - the rumors became rampant. Pet Quality...NO GOOD...It was a fluke that she finished... after all, today she was last in her classAnd so it was that Kicki came to be known as THE NO GOOD BITCH. The BreederOwnerHandlers felt that they had been duped, and their darling Kicki treated in an ignorant fashion. But it was all over, there was no changing anything now, and the whole thing would be best forgotten, never mentioned again, except that the story continues...Now, nine years hence, we again return to the scene. Coco is a great-great-great-great grandmother, Kicki is a great- great-great, and the entry is a major both days. If a human being, she would be universally disliked, but she is only a little Pomeranian and I love her in spite of everything. She is affectionate, defiant, deceptive, and selfish, a rebel if there ever was one. A prevaricator, demanding attention, she tells me, Mama, Im full of fleas, as she contorts herself in front of me, scratching madly with one leg, then another. I pick her up and look her over, hair by hair, a process that she enormously enjoys. Not a single flea, but she beams with satisfaction.Penny grew up in the kennel, but learned to climb at an early age. She roomed with Ch. Legacy, who had a slight proclivity to scale fences, so every precaution was taken a higher fence, and later, a guard strip across the top. This stopped Legacy, but Penny often attained the top and sat on the strip surveying the world. One day she climbed the outside fence and was found later waiting at my front door. This frightened me so greatly that I compromised, giving her the freedom of the runs. In no time at all, she discovered the bedroom dog door and was found triumphant beside my bed, saying Arent you glad I found my way here Im a smarty My mind was then made up to sell this puppy who was emerging into adulthood in the worst possible manner. As Penny was of beautiful conformation and soundness, two of my best friends were so anxious to buy her that choosing between them was impossible. So time went by and Penny self-whelped such perfect puppies that she became valuable to me beyond calculation.Penny deceptive Thats putting it mildly. She knows that the bedroom dutch door leads into forbidden territory. With the top open, Penny is the model of decorum, as long as I stay in sight. But her instincts give her away when I leave. Returning, a small pile is found in the kitchen and a wet spot catches my eye on the living room rug. I fuss and scold while cleaning up, while Penny sits innocently in the bedroom, appearing concerned and sympathetic, wonder how one of these Poms could be so bad. Actually, none of these senior citizens could go over a chalk line without leaping.The other day a pregnant brood was brought into my bedroom, and I sat on the bed to take her temperature. Penny watched me from the floor, and sized up the situation. In her evaluation, a stranger had been allowed on the bed, a privilege not permitted to her, and she was defiant. To educate those that show a sincere interest in the breed is very important to us we have spent endless hours over the years dog talking. Any true advocate of the breed knows how the hours can fly by so quickly when you talk dog. This is just as true to those of us who support ma bell. Have you looked at last months telephone bill I mean really looked at it Count the actual hours you talked dog and you will then know why it took the UPS man to deliver the phone bill.We had visitors a few days ago who appeared very interested in knowing more about our small dogs. The typical novice questions were asked Are they smart" Are they good travleling companions" Is there an awful lot of grooming Do they bark much Are they good watchdogs Are they a clean dog and are they expensive to own" It takes a lot of time to explain all of this in detail. Just take the question are they smart". By the time you line each little dog up that you own, and have him do his little tricks, its either getting dark or on the other hand it may be getting light which ever applies.As the hours quickly ticked away and we had enjoyed our new company as well as they enjoyed listening and learning. Realization set in as we looked at the lunch and dinner dishes piled upon the kitchen counter as well as the snack bowls and refreshment cups and glasses, that we had been together all day and evening. Yes, we all had a good time together and I think, if this is at all possible, we were even getting dog talked" out. It was time for them to leave and we thanked them for stopping by and learning and listening and playing with our dogs. They said they had a wonderful time as they stuffed the last of the dessert tray into a bag it was a long trip home and they mentioned they enjoyed our homestyle preparations for both lunch and dinner, as well as our snacks and of course, our company, but especially all the beautiful COCKATOOS Yes, they really said COCKATOOSAs they walked out to their car, I scratched my head in total disbelief, wondering where I went wrong that day. Home is a lovely old farmhouse, nestled in what must surely be the prettiest part of England. After a cup of real tea I was given my first introduction to Twinkle - English, Irish Japanese Champion Daim of Sushimoto at Cygal, a stunningly beautiful, deep orange sable male with whom I fell totally in love. Then I was invited to meet the rest of the family. Cygal is probably one of the largest Pom kennels in England, usually housing about seventy dogs but what impressed me most that first day Of those seventy happy, bouncing little bodies there must have been twenty or so that were obviously very old. I know I should be practical, sighed my host, but all these Old Ones have been good to me. How can I get rid of them just because theyre not productive any more That made me think I am a newcomer, my dogs are still young. Will I be able to get rid of them when they cease to be of practical use to me I hope not.1022. Today my promised grooming course started. I watched as Stuart prepared two dogs, then it was my turn. I wish I could say that I did a professional job, but...Too should soon get the hang of it. There are plenty more to work on. was the verdict...spoken through a very stiff upper lip. 1025. The Lincoln Toy Dog Open Show. At an Open show no Challenge Certificates are awarded in England one needs 3 CCs to become a Champion, but these have to be won over all the other dogs of the same sex that are entered in your breed, including any Champions present. There were over 800 entries, which seemed very large, considering that only Toys participated. Of these, 28 dogs and 38 entries were Poms. Stuarts partner, Mr. Mike Bottomley, was judging these, so I was able to sit at at the judges table where I could get an excellent close-up view.1031. The Midland Counties Championship Show - held over four days. Today was Hound and Toy day. I was thrilled to be introduced to the President of the English Pom Club, Mr. Bob Flavell of the famous Wilmscote Kennel, and his gracious wife, Betty, who will judge at Crufts in 1987.The first thing one notices is that there are far more classes in England than here. Furthermore, many of the dogs are entered in several classes, rather than just one, as is usual in the USA. Only undefeated dogs compete for the C.C. and because of the difficulty in obtaining those, a Class win is taken very seriously. The entry was large - 36 dogs and 40 bitches made 112 entries. The quality appeared comparable to that seen here at a large show a few really superb dogs, several very nice ones, and a few that one would not expect to see in any show ring. On some of the entries the famous English sculpturing was very obvious, whilst others appeared to be shown in natural coat. The handling was not, on the whole, as deft as in the USA, and the exhibitors attire - most wore either sweat suits or jeans - rather surprised me.The Pom Reader December 1986Twinkle got the dog C.C. his 31st - hes now just 3 short of the Breed record and Best of Breed. He was considered closely for Group Reserve in England they dont have Group placements 1-4 as we do which would have made him top winning Pom so far this year - no mean feat at six and a half years of age - but this time it was not to be.115. Ail too soon my visit was over, and I was on my way home, full of happy memories the breathtaking views, the cozy pubs, the visits with so many hospitable people and, of course, the dogs. Adults playing in the courtyard, the Old Ones enjoying a special tidbit, the Little Ones romping in the puppy room, they all contributed to a wonderful experience. I learned a lot - about dogs in general and Poms in particular. She said, Sally, remember the time you brought the wrong dog to the show Oh, gee, I did remember, but it happened so long ago I didnt realize she was at that particular show or that she would remember the Boo Boo I made that long ago. I happened to have been alternately showing 2 males at the time and didnt check my entries before I left home for those shows. Wouldnt you now, I brought the wrong Pom.I started to jot down all of the mistakes an exhbitor could make concerning a dog show. Lets start at the beginning. Of course, forgetting to fill in an entry correctly and completely is a good way to a bad start. All entries must be on an official AKC entry form and contain the name and date of the show you wish to enter. You may use a blank entry from another show, but the date and name of that show must be crossed off and the name and date of the show you want to enter, substituted.All entries must have the AKC registration number of the dog you are entering and the class in which it is to be shown. If you enter a puppy class the date of birth is necesary. If Bred by Exhibitor class is entered, the name of the breeder is a must.It stands to reason, if the owners name and address are not on the entry, where will the entries be sent The signature of the owner or agent person handling or otherwise authorized to enter the dog must also be on the entry. The best advice is to fill out the entry completely, with the name and date of the show. Dont forget to sign it. Once entries have closed, the only entry mistake that can be corrected is the sex of the dog.Lets assume you have filled out the entry correctly. The entries must be sent to the correct Superintendent of that show along with the entry fee required. The Superintendent must receive your entry before the stated closing date for the show. Generally speaking, entries close no later than noon on the third Wednesday before a weekend show. On occasion entries close before that. The entry form for that show will tell you the name and address of the Superintendent, the fee required, and the closing date of the show. If you do not have an entry form for that show, you can get this information from the AKC Gazette, a frequent exhibitor, an all-breed club or if you know who is Superintending that show, they can give you the information you need. Most Superintendents have Premium Lists for their upcoming shows at their other shows. If you are going to a lot of shows, ask to be put on their mailing list. You will receive Premium lists which contain not only a list of trophies offered, but among other things, judges assignments and entry forms for that show. If you have questions on entering an AKC licensed dog in an AKC show, Im sure one of the above mentioned would be glad to help you.In another article, I will write an account of mistakes I and other exhibitors have made at dog shows.
