Rays of SunshineCHARLOTTE CREED6618 Lost Ridge, Pineville, LA 71360 318-466-3456The Pom Reader May 1987SHOWSIGHT - FROM THE EDITORIs it really May already Thats ridiculous - just yesterday was Christmas, but there you are - it goes more quickly than you think. And speaking of going quickly reminds me that May is the month that we bought this place. Yes, it was May - one hundred years ago...or so it seems. Now, anyone stuck in January in the icy environs gets testy and jealous towards those of us who reside in Florida, and I dont blame them. But I am here to tell you that living in Florida is not all suntan lotion and sea breeze.Of course, we were terribly excited on the day of our move here. Florida Just think - everything will be perfect and relaxed and fun, we thought. Little did we know. Through a rather confusing, not exactly kosher but perfectly legal real estate deal, we found ourselves with a large chunk of Florida property but without the enormous funds we thought would be at our disposal somehow the income of the properties and rental buildings had been overexaggerated. It should be noted that the realtor in question is no longer in the business, nor in the state of Florida. Well, we thought, well make the most of things, and everything will turn out all right. We learned two hundred different ways to make hot dogs thirteen different ways to make grilled cheese sandwiches learned to drink cheap beer instead of Dorn Perignon and found ingenious ways to make old clothes look new. Even with this penny-pinching approach to life we were still in pretty bad shape. Well, we thought, weve got lots of energy and ability well take on other jobs in addition to those we have, and well be rolling in dollars in no time.Being a whiz of an accountant, Duane was surely in a good position for making extra money. His first prospective client looked a little shady Duane turned down the account. His second prospective client was shady. He turned that down, too. His third prospective client was a creep, and vetoed that one. And the fourth could not speak English and was soon to be investigated by the IRS. He didnt touch that one. Ah well, we thought, there are many other things we can do just fine.Although.short on readily available cash, our credit was excellent. I bought an enormous lawn mower to handle our properties, and then I got to thinking...why not work for others, also So, I was a Free-Lance Lawn Mower for a while. It seemed like a good idea at the time - I could be out in the sun enjoying the Florida weather and making money, too But that year things had a way of not turning out right. I didnt have a trailer for the mower, so I just drove it where I needed to go. Up and down the country roads I was seen, on my way to my latest lawn. Piled high upon the mower were jugs of iced tea, extra tanks of gasoline, suntan oil, rain gear in case of inclement weather, identification and health cards in case of sunstroke, little clipper things to clean around bushes, a book or two in case of boredom, bandaids in case of slight injury, bags of cheap potato chips in case of hunger, and me. I was prepared, I thought, for anything. The first job I got was through another realtor. One of her homes had grown up quite a bit and would I cut it Sure I putt- putted on over. The grass was about a foot and a half high. The mower suddenly seemed to shrink in size and power. Well, I thought, the job has to be done and Im going to get it done. I want a steak tonight However, the mower had other ideas. It would stall every three feet in the too-tall grass I would restart it, move another three feet and repeat the process. This was getting ridiculous. I had already finished off all the iced tea, eaten the potato chips, spread on all the suntan lotion, and used up most of the gas, but I was getting nowhere fast. And then I made a discovery. If I revved up the engine as far as it would go, and then popped the clutch, theThe Pom Reader May 1987mower would rear up and then plop down, the blade spinning so fast that the grass would be gone before the mower could choke itself. This was working out just great Cars slowed to a crawl out on the road people seemed fascinated by this very tan man riding a bucking-bronco lawn mower. Actually, it was kind of exciting, not to mention dangerous, but I needed the money. I got the job done and headed homeward. The 40.00 dollars I got for the job paid for half of the new clutch I then needed. New clutch installed, the next day I headed for my second job. Nothing much bad happened at that one their dog chased me around the yard, snapping and growling one of the kids threw a water balloon at me, but it cooled me off, so I thanked him. And the lady yelled at me for whooshing grass into the garage and made me sweep it out, which I did. Then they said they would have to mail me the check because they had no cash in the house. Thats okay, I said with a smile, trust you. Two days later they moved away, and Im still waiting for the check. And speaking of waiting, everyone is waiting for the question of the month... WHAT TWO WELL KNOWN AND WELL LIKED POM FANCIERS ARE NOW CALLED GRANDMA AND GRANDPA Well, far be it from me to carry tales, so suffice it to say that their initials are Marlene Marlin Presser. Congratulations JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP, ANYONE Maybe if youre real nice, the child will grow up to mow your lawnAnd speaking of mowing lawns brings us back to my shortlived career. My third mowing job looked like a breeze a well- tended, landscaped yard with no mean dogs or ill-behaved kids or ladies with garage fetishes. No one was home, it was a brilliant day, and it was way out in the country away from anything and anybody, the way I like it. I was zooming back and forth, round and round, in between hedges and bushes and having a ball. At one point I whipped along a dense hedge, and I noticed a strange buzzing sound coming from the mower. Not another clutch, I thought, surely not another bad clutch Well, it surely wasnt the clutch the buzzing sound came from the huge hornets nest I had knocked down onto the back of the mower. In two seconds flat I was covered with stinging, ugly hornets. Now, what do you do Jump off a mower going close to twenty miles per hour Screech to a halt, grab a hose, and whoosh the little creeps off Command the hornets to down-stayWell, believe you me, you cant do any of those. You roar across the lawn, screaming and cursing and slapping wildly at yourself. You turn off the mower as quickly as you can and head for medical attention, pronto. Unfortunately, medical attention was five miles down the road the house was locked and there was no other house even remotely close. The brilliant sun was beating down upon a very badly burnt, hornet-abused body. My arms were shaking so badly I could hardly drive the stupid mower. I did make it home, however, attempted to tend to the stings, and... passed out cold on the kitchen floor. The 50.00 I got for that job paid for half of the medical bill, and I spent the next two weeks looking like a tomato. The whole experience convinced me that, possibly, I was not cut out to tend other peoples lawns for money. Now, do you think I gave up Was I destined to spend my days broke, burnt and bandaged Are you kidding The next week I got The 300 A.M. Paper Route. But thats another story, for another day. CANADA PHONE 902 895-7427fROOM IN THE INN... FOR DOG FANCIERSBetty Claire PeacockRecently I had a nice phone conversation with Peke breeder Dottie Schuerch, and we talked about how hard it is getting to find a motel to stay in for a show weekend. I have been thinking for some time about writing a column about this, and the conversation jelled my ideas. My friend Polly Ferguson and I have traveled together for a number of years and we have our procedures well polished. We take plastic picnic table cloths, the kind with felt backs which dont slide around, and we spread them on the floor. We have square pens which we set up on the plastic and then spread with newspaper. Each dog goes in a pen to sleep and eat and we never let them run free in the room. Nor do we let them up on the bed td shed on the bedspread. If we do any grooming, we spread a large towel or sheet over the bedspread to protect it. We take dog towels and never use the motels towels for dog purposes. And if we bathe a dog, we are careful to clean the tub and the drain. Usually, all we do is wash feet and tummies, if we do any washing at all. Also, a supply of plastic garbage bags goes along so that we can dispose of our soiled paper and wastes. For exercise, I take two folding ex-pens and connect them together to make a large area for the dogs to run in. We police it with the pooper scoopers and use our own garbage bags, finding a dumpster to dispose of them, rather than using the motel trash receptacles, which might not be emptied often enough to keep from posing an odor problem. Usually we can find a good area outside for our pens. If not, or if it is raining, I take an expanding puppy gate, which we can set up in the bathroom door and the dogs can go down on newspaper. We take along paper towels, disinfectant spray and rug cleaner to take care of any accidents. If we walk any dogs on lead, we use a paper towel or plastic bags to pick up with as we go. I have noticed that big dog people dont seem to be as careful to pick up after their dogs as Toy people are. Those of you with motor homes dont have to worry about where you will stay, but many of us have no desire for a motor home and wish to enjoy hot water, comfortable beds, and eating out. We need to behave in such a thoughtful way as to always be welcome at the motels. We have a busy spring season ahead of us, with many shows and a lot of traveling. Good luck to all of you in the ring.DBCPy Offers At Stud1 0 CH. BONNERS LEGACY . py GOLDEN DRAGONOwnerHandler] SANDRA TERRITO^ P.O. My mom keeps telling me my doctor is really a very nice lady, but it isnt true, Shu-Shu, because every time I see her, I get poked somewhere. Last time I visited her, it was somewhere TWICE I dont think mom is nice either cause she is the one who is always taking me to see this doctor. After I get poked, both my mom and the doctor try and make up for all my pain by giving me hugs and squeezes - OUCH What can a little girl doLove, Stephie Mishawaka, INDear StephieI think some doctors just go around stabbing little kids like you, just for the fun of it. When he did, up and over he went. And down. But he survived All he had was a broken leg - and a broken jaw. After 6 weeks of nursing and TLC the cat was as good as new- except he couldnt open his jaws any more. They were now tightly locked shut. So, back to the vet, waiting for the dreaded verdict. Either spend another 2,000.00 and rebreak and reset the jaw including another 6 weeks of misery for the cat, or put him to sleep. Kristina pondered. She couldnt bear the thought of putting her cat through all that torture again plus it might not work the next time- and there was no way she could put him to sleep. So, she called her mother. Her mother said, Put him on the plane and send him to me. Ill see what I can do. After arriving in Indianapolis and getting a little rest, the cat was taken to and old time family Vet friend. He told her to leave the cat, and that he would figure out something. So that night he carefully put the cat into a controlled slumber, put a clamp in his mouth and slowly pryed his jaws apart. By morning the cats mouth was open. Voila - the cat was as good as new. The paralyzed, tightened jaw muscles were relaxed and he was responding perfectly. Oh, and the cost was 10.00. Which once again proves that common sense is more important than dollars and cents. Now happily back in Hollywood the cat thinks twice before making any more long leaps.I dont know if were supposed to tell this, because animals arent allowed on the TV and movie sets unless theyre acting -- but there is some reason that everyone on the General Hospital set keeps stopping by Kristinas dressing room in their off-moments. And Kristina wonders why Edy is never hungry when they get home from a days work.Lillian Muller from California delighted us with a long phone call the other day, and we discussed the Pom Reader and Northern California Poms. Even though we have never met we were friends through her and her husband Davids Ch. Mullers Encore. Cory has long been representing the Pom in Group competition down here while being campaigned by Anna Ray LaFortune. And he has certainly made us all proud. Anna could always count on him to give his very best no matter how hot, how cold, or how tired. Two of his most outstandint qualities were his terrific, super showman personality and his gorgeous stand-off coat. Although we never did pick him up, all the people that did couldnt believe that he only weighed like a feather under all that huge coat. A real crowd pleaser.Just now 3 years old, he had been on the road solid since he was an 8-month old puppy. So Lillian said she figured that since he had been out of coat anyway, that she would keep him home for a while, and give him a well deserved rest while he was coating up. Besides it was fun having the guy home. Now she says he is looking great, and ready to go again. He has a look alike son that is starting a show career of his own. Mullers Celebriti already has a major tucked away with a win at Oakland. He also has been in the care of the LaFortunes. When he is in the ring people come up and say What is Cory doing in there"Lillian and David have had their share of good Poms. How The Pom Reader May 1987many people have had the thrill of having a male and a female both win, and finish their championships on the same dayDorothy Keller shared a good idea with us, so that we could pass it on to the Pom Reader devotees. Instead of buying expensive pin brushes from the dog supply distributor, she goes to her local Beauty Supply Store. And there she pays between 1.50 and 1.75 per brush depending on the quantity that she gets. That way when one gets lost or borrowed its no big deal. She also said to be sure to get the wooden handles. Sometimes the plastic ones will break.MORE ABOUT OVERTRIMMING I was surprised at how many comments I received about the overtrimming of Poms Anna LaFortune strongly feels that we will have to change the Pomeranian Standard to make the Pom a one-coated breed, if we continue to allow Poms to win that have had all their second outer coat of harsh, guard hairs cut off. A cut down dog does not have 2 coats.Anna has a couple of stories to tell. One is about a new Pom that was just bought. It was cut down. The new owner let the dogs coat grow out. He had the curliest coat she had ever seen on a Pom. He NEEDED just one coat. The other is about a terrific Pom that was sent to a top handler. The owner had to pull the dog, because he looked like a puppy when the handler was through chopping him up. It has gotten so that as soon as a Handler gets a Pom to show -- out come the scissors.Anna also says, I like 2 coated Poms. I like a mane thats heart-shaped. When I look down on my dogs I want to see a pear- shaped looking dog. I want a texture on that outer coat -- and straight. I also want well feathered front legs front legs. I never use hair spray. What do I use Distilled water and lots of elbow grease. I cut the guard hairs off my puppies, and trim the shaggy hair. When I see the Pekes cut down, Ill cut the Poms down.Ive heard it said that the AKC doesnt like it if we keep changing our Standard. Why not keep with the Standard, and stop trying to change the beatiful breed that we haveThe competition is really heating up now There are several very good Poms that just need a point or a major to be champions. And with the younger ones coming along, it is tough. But also very interesting. What a pleasure to have the opportunity of seeing Ch. Precious Petit Riple Supreme. Duane Doll Joe McGinnis have sent him to California where he is coating up under the watchful eye of Vikki Powell. We hope to see him down here in May.Because May promises to be so much fun, and well be having the chance to see people and Poms we havent seen before, we will just be observing and visiting at the Specialty. Tel 319 332-5809The Pom Reader May 198718 MORE ON VESTIBULAR DISEASE...Bob Schuerch-5 Last year I devoted two columns to Granulomatous MeningoencephalomylitisGME and a similar condition known as retuculosis or vestibular disease. Im happy to report that our Scottish import bitch Queenie is doing well. She has been offI. I all medication for some time and herfr. coat is coming back. Although she stilla displays a tendency to tip her head occasionally, she is active and happy and as I write this is just coming into season for the first time. One of the things I reported in those articles was that there was essentially no research going on concerning this disease. Thats no longer the case.Gilbert S. Kahn photo right, the f judge and Toy breeder, lost a Papillon to GME and responded by establishing a research grant at the University of Pennsylvania to study the disease.Soon we may see a light at the end of t the tunnel. The fund is called the Charing \Cross Research Fund and its director is Dr. Sheldon Steinberg at the U. of IPA. School of Veterinary Medicine. I spoke to Dr. Steinberg in late March, the gist of our conversation follows. The body of current knowledge holds that GME, reticulosis, and vestibular disease are the same ailment. Dr. Steinberg attributes the varying terminology to the fact that most available data is based on clinical observations rather than laboratory studies. He also believes the differing longevities reported occur for the same reason. To date a reliable diagnosis can only be made post mortem, although Dr. Steinberg thinks he currently has a true case study where the dog has survived two years. The Charing Cross research has been underway for a little over a year but already an international symposium has been held.I volunteered to send copies of my two articles to him to give him two observations from a laymans point of view and asked if he would care to hear from others who have had the chilling experience the disease brings. He said he would appreciate receiving any case histories. Our conversation was very short partly because I didnt know enough about the subject to perform brilliantly but mostly because I sensed the Dr. was extremely busy. I did offer to send a donation to the fund and write it up in this article.Since our conversation, Ive been thinking about what would be involved in researching a disease like GME. All sorts of questions flash through my mindSince its relatively unknown, how does a researcher collect data How many dogs have survived it How many have died undiagnosed Is there a reporting network to funnel data throughAre GME, reticulosis, and vestibular disease actually the same ailment as the current thinking claims, or are they separate conditions Or are some more or less severe manifestations of the same illnessCan you induce the condition so it can be studied or do you have to wait until some pet owners presents a case in progress Does it occur in other animals or only in dogs Is it more prevalent in particular breeds or is it The Pom Reader May 1987undiscriminatingIs GME a cause or an effect Is it really not hereditary or genetic or is that the belief because the data that could contradict that belief has not surfaced Where do you start Where will it end What happens if the money runs outAre laymens observations valid Are they listened to objectively or routinely dismissed Could a seemingly stupid question lead to a productive line of thought [Ed. note - always remember what my mother says There are no stupid questions. Only stupid answers. JMcG]While Queenie was still under treatment, I mentioned that the head tilt and circling seemed to occur more severely when she was excited. The attending veterinarian indicated that it was unrelated. Was this true or was it merely what the current body of scientific though believes Or, was it merely a professionals way of telling an uninitiated shoemaker to stick to his last Now that Queenie is recovered or at least in remission Ive noticed that she seems to be more prone to head tilt immediately after she has moved her bowels. This set me to thinking again. For any human or animal to do anything requires at least two messages to be transmitted. First, some stimulus must cause a signal to be sent to the brain. Second, the brain must process the incoming signal and send a message to the muscles which must be exercised to react to the stimulus. Now, what do dogs do that is usually preceded by circling Chasing their tails, moving their bowels, urinating, and bedding are four things that come to mind. My unscientific mind immediately rejects chasing tails but the other functions seem to have some plausibility. Is it possible that GME is related to some dysfunction of the digestive tract or the genitourinary system. Admittedly the move from scooping doggie do to curing GME is a several quantum leap, but is it possible Maybe. Is it a stupid question Probably, but what if that stupid question caused an idea to germinate in a trained scientific mind What ifSince talking to Dr. Steinberg, I also thought, how easily we part with a buck or two to buy raffle tickets. How readily we write a check for a trophy donation or an ad. Yet we give lots of thought before donating to a charity or some other cause. If you wish, you can contribute to the Charing Cross Research Fund by making a check payable to Trustees - University of Pennsylvania, and sending it toUNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, School of Veterinary Medicine, 3800 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104. Enclose a note indicating the contribution is for the Charing Cross Research Fund. Dr. Steinberg indicated that all correspondence will be acknowledged. See you next time.OBob Schuerch[Ed. note In addition to the above, I would like to add that it would be a nice idea if those of us planning to make a donation would indicate that the contribution is being made in the memory of Mr. Kahns best friend, the late DR.
