Although her show career has been very limited, she is nevertheless a multiple Group winner with several additional Group placements. Chiqui is the third Pom of Emcee breeding to have won the New York Specialty in the last 10 years.Shown on the cover and above winning the American Pomeranian Club Specialty under Breed authority Dorothy Bonner, Chiqui was beautifully handled by Skip Piazza. On the right is proud owner Morris Carson.Chiquita, who is over 6 years old, was brought out of retirement and thus was shown as a Veteran Bitch. Her abundance of coat, her superior showmanship and her general distinctiveness won not only the Specialty but also the hearts of those who watched her.EMCEES POMERANIANMorris and Betty Carson 9826 Waltham Drive Richmond, Virginia 23233 804 740-79773jcmgwituatioYiSs to- m Aesmelnat dchs Stop' ^fecret, WisiYierfr Qay at tiy ^Beiherf^ 2ss ^.d. usicer - SartiSfteeial tasiA to- AavicZer^ Mro to-jpet 77i Jeio- ffiwterasicaYv hs JfrliSs STTetien. ..ttjpoeatSeo jow at tA soiossCH. You see, just last week Cynthia, my phototypesetting system, blew a gasket or something and rendered herself inoperable. And of course my first reaction, as usual, was to scream and throw things. I contacted the Cynthia People, described the problem, and was happily informed that the repairs would only run somewhere between 500 and 800 dollars. Well, okay, I said. Without Cynthia I can do nothing. And so the required part was dispatched by air once it arrived I was to phone for the technician to come and install it. The part arrived, and foolishly they included the invoice. The part cost 63.00. We almost fainted. Over 500.00 to install a 63.00 part Incredible. But then we got bold. Duane and I, throwing caution to the winds, disassembled the system, and in an intricate operation that took all of two hours, fixed the machine. I called the Cynthia Company and cancelled the repair order. They were not amused. But here comes the part of the economics that I do not understand. Taking the lowest quote, I quickly subtracted 63.00 from 500.00, and suggested to Duane that, since had saved us 437.00, should I not receive personal compensation in that amount I will not quote his reply, except to say that I did not get it.The Bells Are Ringing Department...Of course, on March 27th, Keke Blumberg and Rick Kahn tied the knot in a lovely ceremony attended by many pretty people including Kekes two daughters and two sons. Of course, Im sure that Keke had to write notes to their nursery school and kindergarten teachers so the youngsters could play hookey to celebrate. Whats that you say Theyre not in kindergarten and nursery school Kekes got kids over ten years of age Impossible. Nobody that looks like that could have grown children why, Keke looks young enough to be my cousin There is no need to scurry around, however, to find the perfect wedding gift - Kekes greatest wedding wish is easy enough to fulfill. Keke states, All I want for a wedding present is for these ridiculous rumors to stop circulating. And we agree. If anyone wants to know exactly what is going on in Kekes life...ask HER.I had the pleasure of several recent trips. First up to the Panhandle, where something fun always happens, and this time I was not disappointed. You see, a big-winning Pom person made a debut in the Pekingese ring, helping a friend show dogs. The individual in question, who shall remain nameless, asked me if his exhibit looked okay. I noted, Well, youve got her looking like a Pom. He shot me a funny look and went into the ring, whereupon the judge remarked, Youve got this Pekingese looking like a Pomeranian So there. Next time youll listen. But welcome to the Peke ring, anyway. Entries in the Panhandle were around 40, and among the well-known Pom fanciers with entries were Sue Goddard, Tony Cabrera, Pat Melton, Polly Ferguson, Charlotte Creed, Dr. Cheryl Jackson Joel Taylor, Claudia Pfeffer, Sandra Territo, Othella Sam Smith, Eleanor Clark, Adrian Syble Alford, and Arlene Steinmetz, among others. As I was in town on business, I did not get to spend much time visiting, nor did I get to watch Pom judging, but it was a nice weekend and the weather was fair.I had to go back to the midwest this spring, and luckily the trip coincided with dog shows here I had the pleasure of visiting with Janice Luginsland who judged the Breed for Heart of America KC and pulled a very large entry among those entered were Nina Epps M. Deane Rinehart, Gwen Hodson, Bill Pat Westlund, Terry Schultz, Keith Ruth Ann Neuway, Bill Bullis, Paul Barbara Curry, Mary Allan, and Ruth Schlienz. Popular judge Dawn Vick Hansen was on the panel both days and then she was off to the judge for the International KC in Chicago. This was an anThePom Reader April 1988niversary for delightful Dawn - the International was the site of her debut in the sport of purebred dogs ...fifty years ago. Youd never know it. But what a nice way to celebrate, and Congratulations to you...best of luck in your next fifty yearsIt may be my imagination, but Pom entries seem to be way up all over the States. Just this past weekend Sue Kauffman drew an entry of 35 Poms in Gainesville, Florida, which is way up from what we have seen in recent times. Much of that is due, Im sure, to Mrs. Kauffmans popularity among Toy people, but also I think were seeing the start of a trend. Anytime a Breed gets the kind of publicity that we have, i.e., winning the Garden, the numbers increase across the board. I just hope for the sake of the Pom that we dont get a lot of yayhoos hopping on the bandwagon, trying to breed for bucks.Among the tried and true Pom fanciers in Gainesville this weekend were Rebecca Mixon we always enjoy seeing Becky and dont get to quite enough Harold Collings was on hand to add to our ringside enjoyment Bernie Ciliberto was his usual self Ber- nie is always fun to be around. Numerous other notables were in attendance, and made for a pleasant wait - Poms didnt show until almost 300 p.m., so there was plenty of time for visiting.I recently got wind of something that disturbed me greatly. A friend sent me the following that he had received in the mail. I have hereby edited out Breed identification, Club identification, and personal identification I think you will see why. The item readDear [Blank] [Breed name] and [Breed name] breeders are sending entries like this to the Club Secretary and Superintendent. I am withholding five entries and I have WON under judge [Blank]. If the Clubs are not notified of the reason for lack of entries, the judging panels will never improve. We did this 5 years ago and found it to be an effective means of communication - loss of money to Clubs and superintendent. Accompanying the note was an Official AKC entry form completely filled out, with the headingIn my opinion as a Breeder, this judge does not consistently evaluate entries to the Breed Standards therefore, I shall not enter this [Breed name] in your show. And, in addition to the above, enclosed was a notice of an organization being formed. It followsBreeders Forjudging. Intent Forming an Organization of Breeders for the purpose of a united voice concerning judging and sites at AKC Shows. Possible Purposes 1 Petition AKC to move Bred-By class to the last class judged rather than after Novice Class. 2 Send a list of Judges to the Clubs that the Association can enthusiastically support. Your 5 places you on the list of concerned Breeders and provides the pin, Breeders forjudging, and two mailings. When a minimum of 50 breeders demonstrate their interest by wearing the pin, their names shall be mailed within the group for the selection of 7 breeders to formulate By-Laws. The second mailing will be the names of the 7 Breeders selected.Talk about manipulation. Talk about putting a stranglehold on Kennel Clubs. Talk about blackmail. Well, all I can say is forget it. Try to find two people who can agree on a judge, let alone fifty. This whole thing smacks of interfering with the Democratic process. If AKC says a person is qualified to judge, then the Club must use its discretion in choosing its arbiter. And yes, withholding entries is an efficient way of voting on the competency of a judge. But an organization of people to say who can and who cannot be hired No thanks. Ill look at the premium lists and show to whomever I want. But youre not picking my judges for me. What are your thoughts, readers More about this next month, I assure you. Ch. Golden Glow DandyBy Elva Cohen McGilbryThis little Pom was part of my life for 14 years - never away from me. He was a small Pom, never reached 4 pounds, but had a very nice, compact body, perfect sound legs, a nice clear golden orange coat, perfect show dog temperament. The then famous handler Nicki Finn always said of him, A real Prima Donna. He relaxed, almost half asleep until I put his lead on and took him into the ring. Then he turned it on - everyone in the building came to the ring to watch his super performance.Dandy was all animation, but never made a wrong move. Once, in a class of about 10 males he circled the ring twice. The judge, Kyle Onstott, walked over to me and said Will you please stand with your dog outside of the ring so I can judge these other entries I was scared, thinking he was dismissing me - this was my second time out with Dandy. But no, he called us back later...Dandy won his first Best in Show. There is no thrill greater than that.As a puppy, Dandy was shipped to me by a breeder who wanted my opinion of what she was getting from her broods bred to my Dromore Bombardier. When I picked up this tiny puppy at Railway Express, he was unconscious. My heart really went wild. Even in his condition I thought he was beautiful. I rushed him to a vet as fast as I could drive. After examining the puppy he told me there was no hope but to call back later. He promised to do all he could. His nurse called me after the office closed and told me the vet had put the puppy in the garbage can but he was still gasping. She said if I wished to try to save him she would wait for me to pick him up.I rushed to get him. I took him home. I finally found a goat farm and bought fresh goats milk which I fed the baby Pom drop by drop for a week. It kept him barely alive. I never left the house - the doorbell and telephone were cut off so no alarm could be heard by the baby. Finally about the ninth day he came out of his coma. He was very weak, very scared. But was I ever happy. Slowly he completely recuperated. I had tobuy him then - he was mine.My greatest mistake was his name... I should have named him My Reward. I was a local celebrity. Sports writers from Portland and Vancouver were there to interview me, etc. I trained him to show for me and he loved it, always wan- The Pom Reader April 19884--If\1Jnt.Ch. Dromore Bombardier, both Dandy and Bombardier held records in U.S. and England for siring the most champions and I was awarded certificates for that. I then took him to Canada for 4 shows in 5 days. Here he took 4 Toy Groups and 1 Best in Show to become a Canadian Champion.I didnt campaign Dandy like I should have. Im sorry now that I didnt. I didnt really realize what I had... I just loved him.I only showed him 29 times and he was never defeated 6 times Best in Show and many Toy Group wins. I retired Dandy from the show ring at 4 years of age with a Best in Show win at Yakima, Washington. Statistics-wise, isnt that a pretty near-perfect recordDandy was always my dream of the perfect Pom. Others I owned were great some were Best in Show winners and many were Group winners - many of them his sons and daughters - but...Dandy was very, very special. As most all serious Pomeranian fanciers are, in one way or another, involved in campaigning their Poms for AKC Championship points, we feel that it is important to keep tabs on the Pomeranian doings in this area. The procedures for tallying the point scale are as followsThe source for all points is the official show awards book of the AKC Gazette. Only this publication will be used for point credits. Exhibitors are credited with all AKC Championship points won in the Gazette year, and published monthly according to appearance in the Gazette. As keeping track of each and every AKC show in the UnitedStates is an onerous task accomplished diligently by AKC, many times the actual show dates will vary from the date of publication i.e.- a September show may not be published until December.. The Gazette year, as a rule, runs from about November of the previous year until September of the present calendar year.Points are allotted to THE REGISTERED OWNER OF THE DOG AT THE TIME OF COMPETITION.Statistician Susan Wade. B-A-L-O-N-E-Y.TYPE C So many words begin with C...Contras, Contraband, Collision, Collusion, Culture, Condos, Condoms...awww, dont unplug me, I will be good But the only word which best describes type C is Constant. Type C is Constantly breeding, Constantly buying, Constantly selling, Constantly bragging about their own dogs and are Constantly Cennel blind. They are Constantly Copiers, breeding only to BIS dogs, and their puppies are always selling for over a thousand dollars because they are Constantly telling you that they turned down an offer of a thousand only yesterdayTYPE D This type is Definitely a Disaster. They are always Delirious, Disgruntled or Disturbed and simply cannot understand why they alone are Destined not to succeed. Nothing they do turns out right. In their Desperate search for truth they are blinded by the Dazzle of impossible Dreams. They think the Dog they bought at 8 weeks for 350 should turn out like the one they should have bought at 8 months for 850. But since they have invested 350 in the one they have and it is male and came from a famous line all the wonders of his supposed genetical background will come to the fore when they breed him to every pet bitch they can find. The simple art of basicgenetics is too scrambled an egg for them to crack, so Type D Distributes their Desperation among us, calling Down curses on all who tried to help them for no better reason than we should have made the Dream come true for them.TYPE E Endymion comes to mind. For it was he who begged Zeus for immortality and eternal youth which wish was granted with the provision that Endymion remain eternally asleep. Type E is a sleeper who breezes through whelpings, championship titles and genetical lucky chances in a dreamlike state, with no conscious idea of how he did so well. Type E is Everymans Impossible Dream, but when Everyman attempts to take advantage of Endy- mions luck and buys from him, Everyman awakes to the reality that only Endymion is blessed with his own incredible luck, his bitches producing fifty beautiful daughters even as he sleepsTYPE F Believes in Fun, Fairness and Fanatical hard work, with a smattering of Fantasy mixed in. Type F is the backbone of the Fancy who began by being Fascinated by the beauty of dogs. Type F does not believe in Flim-Flam, is anything but Feckless and though Fawning is quick to see the Faults in his own dog. Neither Flamboyant nor Flawless, Type F Fearlessly pursues his own Faltering path, ignoring the Flotsam that Floats his way. Floundering occasionally, Type F is Forebearing in his Fortitude to keep his Foresighted goals Forever in mind. Type F started out with good Foundation stock, did not expect to make a Fortune, and is Frequently Found Furthering the Future of NICE No-VICESTYPE G Gallops into our midsts, often Garishly dressed and Garnished with Gold. Type G seeks only Garlands and thinks the dog fancy a Game, speaks only in Generalities, often Garbling such phraseology as My GipseyGem is number 2 All Systems, but will be Number 1 as soon as the renowned judge Gastor Gargoyle Gives him Group I at the Garden. Although not always practicing Guile, Type G is often seen in the Guise of a Gratified trophy hunter, writing Gobs of checks to dog show photographers and more Gobs of checks to framers and more Gobs of checks to the postal service as he mails out thirty thousand dollars worth of pictures per year to judges nationwide. This is Guaranteed to Get Gobs more results in keeping GipseyGem the Giant of the Group ring. This purchase has been months in the making. You have found the breeder through the dog magazines, pictured with their beautiful Poms. This is the type of dog you like, and it should be the perfect outcross for your breeding program. You ordered a good show quality dog with the right bloodlines and the breeder sounded excited about the dog, had nothing but praise for him. So you had to pay a high price for him, but you expect that for a quality dog.The clerk in the cargo office comes over and tells you your dog has arrived. Well, no matter how many dogs we have or new puppies we have running around, we still are excited about a new purchase. The clerk comes up to the counter carrying the dog crate and we can barely compose ourselves, while we sign the proper papers, etc. Finally we have our long-awaited dog.You look at him in the crate and already you start getting a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. He doesnt really look like what you ordered. You then take him out and set him up on the crate. At this point you discover this dog is not show or even breeding quality. At this point you are experiencing a lot of different feelings.A Disappointment You didnt get the dog you thought youorderedB Anger This person must think I am pretty stupid, if they didntthink I would not know the differenceC Cheated You didnt get what you paid forD Frustrated How am I ever going to ship in good dogs for mybreeding program Are all breeders going to cull their dogs and send them to me How can I trust these breeders to send me good dogs Do I dare chance it again How will I ever get ahead in my breeding programIts a shame, but its happened at least once to all of us, when purchasing a dog from a distance, where you cant go and see them before purchasing.About ten years ago I received a male pup that was supposed to be show quality. When I let him out of his crate, I couldnt believe my eyes. This pup was timid, he had a poor hind end with a low tail set gay tail and a sparse, soft coat. As you may suspect I was a little upset. I telephoned the breeder and told her what I thought of my new Pom. She said if I wasnt satisfied, I could sell him at pet prices, and then send her the money, and she would replace the dog with a show pup. After this suggestion I knew she had sent the dog to me to sell at my expense. I told her I wasnt keen on the idea, as I didnt want to sell a dog like that out of my kennel. Due to the pup being nervous and upset from his flight, I couldnt ship him back. At this point I didnt know if I was suffering from a soft head or a soft heart. I did sell the pup for her, but didnt feel good about it.This breeder did send me a good male Pom later, that was indeed a nice one. But I did feel used. Because of this breeder, treating me as she did, I never purchased from her again and never will.It is so important that we represent our dogs as they really are to prospective buyers. If people want a show dog, then we sell them- 'just that. Breeding stock should be good specimens of the breed, with no major faults, and can produce show or could be shown themselves. Now since we all have been breeding for good temperament, as well as good conformation and coat, a pet quality pup is not a lame Pom. A pet puppy usually has ears that maybe are a little bit big, coat not as thick, too big - or small - for the Standard, etc. These faults dont interfere with him being a good pet.A show and or breeding Pom should have a replacement guarantee if they cannot reproduce naturally. When we dont send out the best stock possible, it can only hurt our kennels. People wont be satisfied and they will talk and pass it along. Secondly, they and their friends will never purchase from us again. The Old Testament says, Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You. I have mentioned this before, but oh, how important it is...Karen BradshawRR1, Bowden, Alta., TOMOKO, CanadaChesaiPomeranianswmmwmmm,-ximiiiCHESAI CHARMING CHARLIECHESAI PLAYING FOR TIMERobert Joan Reilly 512 438-266726093 Highway 281 North San Antonio, TX 78260The Pom Reader April 1988MIDWEST NEWSJeanne StaffordaWell, things sure are busy here in the Midwest. JMcGDear Joe,An awesome time of year long circuit, bad weather, year-end business books, more shows ahead, juvenile Poms like in delinquents demanding full time attention, and that sweet old gentleman of spring waiting just around the corner - Mr. I.R.S. Dont blame you for combining February and March issues. In face, a good idea for the anniversary issue maybe it will be a nice, big issue. Looking forward to it, as we always look forward to the Reader.Being as busy as the proverbial one-armed paper hanger does not make it conducive to sending in a perfect ad copy. But knowing you are perfect hold it, meaning in ad layout gives us heart in looking forward to our ad, as we know you and your staff and your boss, Cynthia, can fix up this awful copy.Enjoy all the articles in the Reader, like Showsight my, what wit, Viewpoint and Generally Speaking always informative, Olympia that machine needs oiled, let me tell you and all the other contributory columns which appear from time to time. Enjoyed Sally Baugniets You Judge Too last issue. I have always gotten a kick from the respected judge routine. Sally is right. If you didnt respect the judge then doubtless the win would have meant nothing, and you probably would not have advertised the win. The only time an adjective like respected means anything is when a hard worker looks back on his work, receives a pat on the back and feels heshe is respected for a respectable job well done. Which is WHY, I feel, MOST breederexhibitors place ads in magazines. It is to inform fellow breederexhibitors what you are breeding, striving for, and winning with, i.e., publishing your success, lookin for a little respect. Right In that case, more of us need to advertise whether we have anything for sale or not.Respectfully, Lois Bern Ciliberto9605 Land OLakes Blvd., Land OLakes, FL 34639 Amen And by the way, whether you want to or not, you can not move up by Shannon Johnson there is no city called Ciliberto in the Carolinas, north OR south Of course, there is Bern, Switzerland, but you can forget about that Thats too far JMcGJtaicu'Set SSortraits7-V,7Call or write for free full-color brochure Nancy Ross Pet Portraits1559 82nd Street, Brooklyn, NY 11228 718-331-9523The Pom Reader April 1988A POM THAT SAVED MY LIFEBy Dixieanne BennettI had wanted a Pom for thirty years, and finally time and circumstances were going to allow it. So I started searching for a good-quality linebred bitch. After about an eight month search, I located Walden Eight Pomeranians, and so changed my life forever. Little did I guess that the little ball of fluff that went home with me some time later, would in a short time, save my life. Not knowing anything about Poms, but knowing enough about raising other animals, I left the selection to the breeder, Colleen McFarland. After explaining to her what it was I wanted and needed, she went through the available litters and selected two females. Shesaid that both were suitable for my needs, but felt she would put a little heavier emphasis on the larger female since I wanted to breed her. So was selected Effie. She was delightful and entertaining as we integrated her into the family. She terrorized our German Shepherd as a puppy, grabbing hold of his tail and swinging on it. They are the best of friends now. She acts as a hearing ear dog for him, since because of age he is hard of hearing. Effie finished her obedience class being the only toy to do so and my husband and I were so proud of her. When she went RWB at six months of age, we were delighted.Because of her growing affection for my husband, I transferred her papers to my husbands name for his Fathers Day gift. About two months after that time I was lying on my bed, playing some of the other Poms we had since acquired they are addictive. Normally if my husband is home, Effie is usually found within a couple feet of him watching him at whatever task he may be working on at the moment. That day, however, she came leaping onto the bed with me and the other Poms. Not to play - she ignored them, but very intently she moved to my side looking me in the eye as she did so. She then climbed up on my chest and stood there looking me straight in the eye for about ten to fifteen seconds. She then leaped down and went back to where my husband was working in his shop. The place where she had put her right front paw hurt. I reached to rub the spot and froze my husband came into the room as he heard me cry out, oh, no. For precisely in the spot where Ef- fies paw had been was a lump. It was cancer. A particularly nasty type that spreads rapidly and easily throughout the body, if not discovered early enough. I couldnt believe it. I had been outside lower 48 and had a complete physical taking three days of tests only nine months before. I had been assured then, that I was in excellent health. After the biopsy, while I was healing from the minor surgery, none of the Poms were allowed to come and jump up on my lap. The day before I was to go outside for further treatment, they were finally allowed to come and do so. Effie hung back until everyone else had jumped back down to the floor. She then leaped to my lap and stood on her hind legs, placing only one front paw on my chest and looked me right in the eyes again, just as intently as the first time. My heart turned over, for where she had placed her paw on the other side there was a painful twinge. I couldnt believe two different doctors and numerous tests had shown there were no other^ lumps, but exactly where Effie had placed her paw, was another lump. This time on the other side. Now, once might have been a coincidence, but twice in a two week period, ther odds are a little bit too high. My doctors in the end the total was seven different ones all shook their heads. The doctors told me because the tumors had been discovered at such an early stage the prognosis for a complete recovery was very good. Never before or since that time has Effie jumped up and done the same thin, Thank Goodness My recommendation is, that no woman over 40 should be without her own Pom. Her Pom could end up saving her life as Effie did mine.So Effie has earned another award, her P.C. Privileged Character. She sets an excellent example for our other Poms, teaching them their manners by her own good behavior.Effie is a clear orange color, she will be two years old this June. Among Effies favorite things are running through surf, riding in my husbands lap while he drives the motor home and just plain running. The breeder has referred to her as being one of those flying Poms. We are looking forward to her first litter this fall it should be an interesting experience...Because knowing Effie, she shall probably do it with great flair.
