Box 10432 Jefferson, LA 70181 504-737-1729The Pom Reader September 1988SHOWSIGHT FROM THE EDITOROf course, I am one of the worlds greatest fans of the limerick, that often nonsensical but very often amusing style of verse.Popularized in the mid 1850s by Edward Lears A Book of Nonsense, the much- maligned limerick is quickly recognized by its composition of five lines of alternating rhyme, and its trademark anapestic rhythm. Not overly respected in literary circles, the limerick remains, in my book at least, a source of great pleasure. I have known literally hundreds over the years, some great, some so stupid they are hilarious, and some, well, off-color. This collection was provided by the stage manager of the old Chicago Theatre. Strangely enough, the clean limericks have largely left my memory bank, while the rather risque rhymes remain. But the other day I ran across a new one, one that quickly hit the top of my list of favorite limericks. In the most recent issue of Myrle Hales Los Chihuahuas, columnist Don Naugle published the followingThere once were two cats of Kilkenny. Each thought there was one cat too many.So they fit and they fut,And they spit and they sput,Til instead of two cats there werent anyWell, it wasnt Kilkenney, it was London there werent cats, there were dogs, but there could have been a fight nonetheless. Duane Doll and I recently judged for the Pekin Palace Dog Association in England. The Club had graciously split the sexes, so that he would judge dogs and I bitches. Under Kennel Club rules, of the twenty-four classes there are five classes which contain members of both sexes, for which both Mr. Doll and myself judged simultaneously. Anticipating trouble, of course, and not just for us, the Kennel Club provides for a Referee in our case the referee was Dr. Elysabeth Butt, a prominent psychiatrist, which was probably premonitory on their part. But even before the combined classes started there was dissension between the judges.A class of 16 or so, Duane judging, and from ringside I spotted an individual I got very excited about, and an individual that I knew would catch Duanes eye immediately. Unfortunately, they were not the same dog. Duane went about his judging, and, as I predicted, the one I liked took second place and the one I knew he would like won. I was squirming with frustration as Duane came back over to the judging table. What didnt you like about the second place dog, I hissed. Duane replied, I liked him fine, I just liked the whole package on the other dog better. Well, I wasnt too pleased about it, but that was his class to judge, and I had no say in it. Soon, however, the tables were turned.I had a large class and picked an individual that surprised Duane from ringside. Why did you pick her over that glamorous fawn, Duane asked me. I replied, Well, shes glamorous all right, but she cant touch the winner when it comes to head, body, and soundness. Duane did not look any happier about my decision than I had about his. I began to worry What will happen when we have to agree, I thought to myself. Are sparks going to fly Mery soon we would find out.And of course we were both making a very large mistake, going against the only absolute truism in the sport of purebred dogs. As luck would have it, in the course of the other classes, all of the individuals in question came under the hands of the other judge. And I had to admit he was right. And he had to admit I was right. And we had proof of what we had known all along, in theory, and now in practice. You can not judge from ringside. Period. The Pom Reader September 1988And speaking of limericks, several come to mind. Lets see There was a young woman from Exeter...Good Lord, I cant publish that one Wait a minute. Okay A pretty young maid from Racine...Gads, not that one either. Well, give me a minute. In the meantime, the Iowa cluster left smiles on many faces. Janice Luginsland judged the APC Specialty in Des Moines, and her winners were BOB, Ch. Emcees Solid Gold Amigo owned by Marlene Frank Penney WB, BOW, the 6-9 month bitch Jestoms Miss Wonderful owned by J. T. Stephens WD was the Bred By dog, Jan-Les Ragtime Music owned by Jane Lehtinen BOS was J. T. Stephens Ch. Cherlyns Aint She Sweet owned by Cheryl Bergerson. Winning the Sweeps under Nadine Herschel was Mibabes SM Crash owned by Babe McCombs. BOS Sweeps was the Winners Bitch. The following day was The Pomeranian Club of Greater Des Moines. Sally Baugniet took over for scheduled judge Darrell Baker who is recovering from a nasty fall which resulted in a badly broken leg, and we wish him a speedy recovery. Actually, three times recently Sally has pinch-hit for other judges, and consequently has now judged all of her new breeds. I guess thats called the luck of the Pomirish Mrs. Baugniets winners were BOB, Ch. Pedrons Dragon The Conqueror owned by Pete Galindo Ron Welch BOS, Ch. Cherlyns Aint She Sweet WD, BOW Mullers Kazar Sungold Illusion owned by Richard Lackey, and WB Beltanes Such A Spree owned by Paul Barbara Curry. Congratulations to all, and Get Well Quick from all to Darrell. There was a young couple named Kelly... Definitely not THAT one But getting back to compromise, I am no stranger to the art. I am reminded of the time that I demonstrated uncanny ability to arbitrate, and served as Official Referee in an awful confrontation. You see, Sheila and I were in the midst of a terrible family row. Now, a little background. Sheila was from a large family, and of course they were very deprived. There were seven individuals in the household with drivers licenses, and there were only five cars When the kids were all home from school, Sheilas parents were reduced to traveling by limousine, as the driveway emptied out by 600 PM Friday and Saturday nights. Well, most of the time things worked out, until Mr. Mrs. Mac purchased The White Car. It absolutely ruined everything. There were three convertibles and two fancy sedans at the disposal of the Mac family, and everyone pretty much traded back and forth, compromising for their favorite car. But with the advent of The White Car everything changed. The White Car was every college students dream of top-flight transportation, and everyone wanted it or nothing. Long about 300 PM on date nights the fights would begin. Someone would go to the kitchen for a snack, and you would hear the jingle of keys being surreptitiously slipped into pockets. And the arguments would start. Imagine, if you can, a Psych major, a Law student, a Sociology major, a Track Star, and a Pre-Med student standing around the dining room screaming at each other over this vehicle. Finally I had had enough. Now, among this crowd I was considered to be very levelheaded, and often my advice was heeded. I came up with the solution. At six, I decreed, we will all gather in the kitchen and vote who gets to drive what tonight. Its the only fair way. They liked that idea, and peaceful coexistence reigned for approximately three hours. At exactly six, the warring factions gathered in the kitchen, with the obvious exception of two...Sheila and me, roaring out the driveway in The White Car. Thats my kind of arbitration.Til next month, Poms Away JMcG7BI-MAR POMERANIANSHOME OF CH. BI-MAR SUNDANCE KIDOFFERS FOR SALERedSable female whelped 7381. Is a full sister to BIS CH. As most all serious Pomeranian fanciers are, in one way or another, involved in campaigning their Poms for AKC Championship points, we feel that it is important to keep tabs on the Pomeranian doings in this area. The procedures for tallying the point scale are as followsThe source for all points is the official show awards book of the AKC Gazette. Only this publication will be used for point credits. Exhibitors are credited with all AKC Championship points won in the Gazette year, and published monthly according to appearance in the Gazette. As keeping track of each and every AKC show in the UnitedStates is an onerous task accomplished diligently by AKC, many times the actual show dates will vary from the date of publication i.e.- a September show may not be published until December.. The Gazette year, as a rule, runs from about November of the previous year until September of the present calendar year.Points are allotted to THE REGISTERED OWNER OF THE DOG AT THE TIME OF COMPETITION.Statistician Susan Wade. Free trade between kennels. Is it a dream, or could it be a reality Are we ready to share our bloodlines between kennels and countries Are we ready to trust in one another Are we ready to forget the dollar gain and think of how we can work together for the breedAdvantages Show each others dogs to their championships in the others countryFor the cost of showing a male, wecould use him at stud to our own females during this time Other arrangements could be made for females Trading show dog for show dog instead of purchasing Builds relations between breeders in each country Make us more knowledgeable about whats happeningin our breed in each others country. You may say thats all fine and dandy, but how can we trust the other kennel to1 Send a good dog2 Look after our dogs properly when at the other kennel3 Not use our stud dogs for outside gain e.g. breed to females not owned by the lesseeWell, building trust takes time and effort on both sides. Here is one way of going about breaking the ice we use this saying in the North. [Ed. note - we use it in the South, too, i.e. Break me some more ice for this here mint julep J] Write to the kennel of your choice. Usually youve seen the pictures of their dogs in the breed magazines, etcetera. Ask them to send pictures and pedigrees of their breeding stock.a if the pedigrees are consistent champions top and bottom, there is a good chance the kennel is breeding and producing quality.b Write again asking for a show female, and to send pictures front, side and rear and her pedigree. At this point you probably want to know Why a female If she doesnt turn out to be what you ordered, there is still a chance to make up your losses. You could breed her to one of your champions. She is still the pedigree you ordered and could still producce good quality. If not, you can still sell her and the pups for pets. A male on the other hand would be a dead end. Meanwhile, taking into consideration how the transaction is handled If the dog arrives healthy and is what you ordered, then this kennel is a good candidate to pursue.c Then its time to get in touch with this kennel and tell them you like their dogs. Ask them if they would like a show male from you to show and use for eg 2 years at no charge other than show expenses. If the kennel is interested, you could then have them send pictures of their kennel facilities. You already know the dogs at their kennel are healthy and treated well because you own one.The Pom Reader September 1988Always write up a show and breeding agreement between both parties. If everything is go after the above is accomplished, then send the dog at your expense. Now, about this time some of you are saying, Should I send one of my good show males there, for nothing, when I purchased one from them Here are a few good reasonsa You are showing them your stock first handb You are setting up a good rapport for future breeding arrangementsc Its good advertising for your kennel, as the dog will be shownd Most importantly, making good, lasting friends with fellow breeders in each others country. We are all used to taking risks as we raise dogs. Why not take a risk and promote our dogs We will all gain from it. I know I am willing...are youKaren BradshawRR1, Bowden, Alberta, TOM 0K0, CanadaMILLAMORKen MillerHawthorne, Apt. E-6 Mt. I feel it is needed badly in the Pom breed, as it is the only Pom magazine sent to judges. Dog News, etc., is so widespread with so MANY breeds, the Poms tend to get lost.I am also a Peke lover and fell in love with your lovely BIS Peke on the last page of the June Pom Reader. What a beauty, and such outstanding handling. You must be so very proud.Thank you, and again, congratulations.Sincerely, Barbara Nagy, Stephens City, VaBarbara thank you for the vote of confidence on the PR you made my day. Also, thanks for the compliments on my dog proud is not the word. And I owe special thanks to Sylvia Kelly for buying that congratulatory ad. What an unselfish thing to do. Best of luck and thanks for writing. JMcGDear Joe,Thank you very much The Pom Reader is beautiful. I like it so much.Im importing a Pomeranian from U.S.A. for ranking in Brasil and exposition in Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, and Chile. I dream about it every night.Yours truly, Maria de Loundes V Calegari, Brasil And best of luck with your new Pom JMcG Dear Duane and Joe,Sable took a Group I from the puppy class in Huntsville. You spelled her name wrong, by the way, on the July cover. Her correct name is Janesas Glen Iris Sorceress, not Jamels. Although Eleanor says that she would have been glad to have bred Sable, Jerrie Freia really did the work. Actually, Jan Master did, I guess.See you soon Cheryl A. Jackson, Birmingham, ALSorry about that JMcG Dear Joe,Enclosed is a photo pedigree check to enter our first homegrown potential champion. I have included some info about him. I dont know how much of it is appropriate so I will entrust it to your most capable editorial abilities. The picture is of Ed Fudgie in their first win so I will appreciate it if you would send it back. Thanks again for the great job you are doing in keeping us informed about our favorite breed. I recommend our magazine to all new Pom owners when they adopt one of our puppies. We look forward to the arrival of each months issue.Sincerely, Dot Martin, Rock Hill, SCThank YOU...and keep up the good work JMcGHi,I took full advantage of the free ads on Greats of the Past. I did note a bit of sex discrimination in that it stated male. Guess we gals still have a long way to goAs ever, Janice Luginsland, Americus, KansasJanice how dare you I became an honorary member of N.O. W. in 1973, so you see where I stand on that issue. Having said that, however, I must say this Im sure your Pom gals are very special, but Im not sure they have the requisite talents for inclusion in Greats of the Past in THE STUD DOG ISSUE. Continued success JMcG The Pom Reader September 1988NEWS...DELAWARE VALLEY POM CLUB MATCH The DVPC will hold its next Match on Sunday, October 9th, at the American Legion Hall in Trenton, New Jersey. However, it is not completed until the videos are in the hands of the judges, many of whom cannot afford to buy quantities at the price of 35.00 each. The AKC should go further and give the videos to the judges, or sell to them at a nominal price. The videos are unsurpassed as a teaching tool, but ineffective because of expensive distribution. The Pug Dog Club of America is giving free copies of the Pug video requested by judges, and surely the properous AKC could do as well, as all Breed Clubs are financially pressed with dues and entry fees barely covering their specialties. The videos would improve judging to a greater extent than the expensive seminars and other activities sponsored by the AKC, but they must have wider judge distribution to accomplish this purpose.I suggest that the AKC give free to each judge a copy of each of his licensed breeds. Every breeder, exhibitor, handler, and judge should write to the AKC requesting this move, as it would be of benefit to all of them.As each exhibitor enters the ring, he wishes that the judge had studied that breed video, enabling him to make a better selection. This judge had probably seen the video one time, possibly among distractions, which is no substitute for extensive home study. As National Chairman of the Pomeranian production, with 39 Poms filmed, the faults and virtues were presented in such minute detail that a judge could hardly miss the lessons. Our Club cannot afford to furnish free copies, as much as they are needed. This is a desired function of the AKC.Dorothy Bonner26903 Highway 281 N., San Antonio, TX 78258THE 1989 TOY DOG CALENDARAX10.95 each 10 or more calendars 8.95 each.
