WELCOME TO THE CLUBThe Pom Reader May 1990SHOWSIGHT------------------------------------------------------FROM THE EDITORSay what you will, but I truly believe that daytime television has never again reached the heights it enjoyed when I was the undisputed Star of Romper Room, the famous childrens show on Chicagos Channel Nine. I was so good that I was the only kid in the history of the show to be held over for an extended engagement. I refuse to believe that the flu epidemic which rendered a large segment of the child population unavailable had anything to do with my popularity. My rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance was letter-perfect my Do- Bes and Dont Bes Do Be A Sidewalk Player - Dont Be A Street Walker - Im not kidding impeccable my performance during Milk and Cookies was unparalleled -1 even made the Sign of the Cross on live TV - and when it came to The Parade I was without peer.To be perfectly honest my competition wasnt all that swift. There were six of us two were stupid, two were fat, one was completely regrettable and one was Adorable that is my completely unbiased opinion. But the facts bear me out only the Adorable one was asked back for the second week. But the Parade was the pivot point of the whole performance, a daredevil ensemble piece in which six four-year- old children were required to not only march in a circle, but march in a Circle while playing toy instruments and not bump into each other or fall down. And you had to wear a little hat, too. The complicated staging of this act kept viewers riveted to their seats. But as in all endeavors, politics reared its ugly head from the very first performance.I was quick to note three rules of thumb that governed the proceedings 1 the TV cameras zeroed in on the most amusing child 2 the child who earned the most camera time got to choose his instrument to play, and 3 the kid who played the Triangle always got to lead the Parade. I immediately embarked upon my now-famous Triangle Campaign.I became quite adept at insinuating myself between whatever the cameraThe Pom Reader May 1990was aiming at and the lens itself this was quite easy during all scenes while we were standing. An impromptu little dance always garnered attention limping got an extra bonus because the hostess, Miss Rosemary, would invariably ask if you had hurt yourself, giving you added camera time, and exhibiting signs of physical discomfort as if you had to go to the bathroom was an automatic show-stopper. If the camera crew had caught on to what I was doing they never indicated it, because, hey it worked the kids good. The sitting scenes were more difficult but far from impossible. If some kid was displaying something during Show and Tell, all you had to do was reach over and touch the doll or whatever. Like magic, when a hand enters the frame, the camera travels right straight up your arm and settles on your little face. If a kid way down on the other end was saying something stupid or boring, all you had to do was spill a little milk and you were back in the limelight. If you cried you got extra points. And if worse comes to worst, you could always resort to picking your nose no cameraman in the world can resist that one. My artful performance was justly rewarded I always got the Triangle and to lead the Parade.I was, indeed, The Star. But television stardom was not without its pitfalls one had to be constantly alert to remain on top. There was a girl named Linda with an unnervingly endearing lisp a girl named Doris had a doll named Poor Pitiful Pearl, but her unprofessional pronunciation Per Pitiful Peri was getting her just a little too much attention and there was a boy named Peter whose arrhythmic performance on the cymbals caused some people tothink he was cute. Actually, I felt that when he did manage to get the cymbals to connect it was purely by accident. Oh yes, it wasnt easy at the top, and towards the end of the first week my little tricks were getting a bit stale, I mean, how many different ways can you spill milk To maintain my star status I did what any professional performer would do I buttered up to Miss Rosemary, thereby insuring myself all the plum parts. As a matter of fact, I got more air time than she did, inspiring the old adage or maybe it was Shirley Temple never act with dogs or kids.Speaking of dogs and acting, courageous acts performed by dogs are always pleasant to hear about - especially if its a Pom Kibbles N Bits and Ken-L Ration annually award Dog Hero of the Year to canines who react above and beyond the call. The third runner-up in this years awards is a Pomeranian called Shukota, who alerted her family to a fire in their motor home, thereby averting tragedy.Kibbles N Bits and Ken-L Ration are now accepting nominations for next years award. If you know of a dog that committed an heroic deed that occurred after October 1, 1989, send a detailed description of the event, along with your name, address and telephone number, to Kibbles N Bits Dog Hero of the Year, P.O. Box 1370, Barrington, IL 60011. Entries must be received by December 31, 1990.Unfortunately, I had no Pom around to aid me when tragedy struck after my TV debut. Although I reigned for a while, my fame on Chicagos Romper Room was unfortunately fleeting a scant year later I found I could walk through Marshall Fields Toy Department without being recognized, quite a blow to my ego. But when they come out with the video Romper Rooms Greatest Moments, guess whos going to be on the cover.Im going back to Chicago this month but Im steering clear of the TV station theyd probably want me to come back and Im too big for Milk and Cookies. I loved every minute of our trip to that area in 1986 and this might be a good excuse to go again Sweepstakes judge is APC President Delores Watts and Breed judge is Alexander C. Sandy Schwartz with Betty Winthers doing obedience and Junior Showmanship.Following the Specialty there are two all-breed shows in the Seattle area. On Saturday, the Seattle Kennel Club will hold its all-breed event at Seattle Center, where visitors can enjoy the Space Needle, Art Museums, Pike Place Market and Puget Sound itself. On Sunday the Nisqually Kennel Club show will be held in Olympia at the south end of Puget Sound. The Nisqually show will be a supported entry for Pomeranians, and the Open Class will be divided by colors, as in the Specialty. For more information on the Puget Sound Pom Clubs first Specialty, contact L. Allan Koeller, Show Chairman, 1508 NE Brockman PI., Seattle, WA 98125.Unfortunately, a cold which I brought home from the Sunflower Circuit kept me from attending another Pomeranian gathering. The Sooner Pomeranian Club of Oklahoma City held its spring sanctioned breed match on April 13, 1990. Word is that the buffet meal was great as usual. Raffle had many, many winners as usual. Entries were cute and some even trained Kathy Bucher was to do Sweepstakes but was delayed in traffic. She arrived late but Peggy Bush was asked to take over her assignment and judged all the Sweepstakes entries. I know Kathy was disappointed as she is now a true convert to the breed stepping into the world of Pomeranian whelping. Olga Smid with her pretty smile and gentle manner judged the regular classes. Best in Sweepstakes went to Carousels Rainman - breeder, Linda Gustafson, owners Linda Gustafson Pam Gault. BOS to Best in Sweepstakes went to HHH Something Preshus, breeder- owner Peggy Hendricks. Best in Match was HHH Gidget Will, breeder Peggy Hendricks, owners Annette Heise Sandra L. Miller. BOS to Best Match was Carousels Rainman, who was also Best in Sweepstakes. Best Junior Handler was Jessica Gloria, daughter of Donna Gloria, showing Jes-Dorfs Cream Puff - breeder, Jack Riley. Mark your calendars for November 9, 1990, for their fall Pomeranian match.AMERICAN POMERANI CLUB Education Co-Ordinator advises that there was an error in the printed STANDARD which was mailed out to all members and appeared in the April Pom Reader. A line was left out of the paragraph on Body Coat, which should read as followsBody Coat Double-coated A short, soft, thick undercoat, with longer, coarse glistening outercoat consisting of guard hairs which must be harsh to the touch in order to give the proper texture for the coat to form a frill of profuse, standing-off straight hair.A soft, flat, or open coat is a major fault. 'VtAYS3Potpourri, pronounced pot-poor-e, or, in French, po-poo-re, as defined by Funk Wagnalls means 1 A mixture of dried wild flowers kept in a jar to perfume a room. 2 A musical medley or literary miscellany. 3 Any incongruous mixture. And goes on to state that in French the world litterally means rotten pot. I didnt know that But now that I know the word can mean a musical medley it seems a bright idea to name a future Crescendo dog POTPOURRI. And I wonder, will my fellow dog fanciers think POTPOURRI is so named because hesheit is an incongruous mixture of pedigree Or because POTPOURRI is a rotten pot Or because POTPOURRI is all dried up and instead of in the show ring belongs in a jar, perfumingthe kennel room And should I call-name POTPOURRI Potty P0P0 Or Pourri - for rottenAt any rate to get on with our potpourri Olympia read, with delight, the inside back cover of the FebMar issue 1990 of The Reader and if you have not read it - DO The poem, Lament of a Stud, author unknown, was submitted by Sue Soares, who also said she feels the dam is just as VIP as the sire of a litter and wants to hear other breeders ideas on the subject. Why not drop a letter to LETTERS FROM OUR READERS, co editor Joe McGinnis and tell us your experiences with sire and dam in the quality of the progenySEX DETERMINATOR It is a scientific fact that every mammal has 2 sex chromosomes the female bearing the type designated XX, one of which she gives to her ova for fertilization by the male, who bears the type designated X and Y, respectively. The X and the Y chromosomes divide and enter the sperm in equal division. If the male sex chromosome X enters the ova, XX, or female, is born if the male chromosome Y enters the ova, XY, or male, is born. However, the female, being a bit bitchey, can change things a bit. Mammal ova, unlike chicken eggs, float unprotected by shell covering and enter the uterus where they can easily be damaged by chemicals in the maternal hormones which filter thru via the bloodstream. Thus a bitch can destroy the sex determination, consequently causing either predominantly male or female offspring. This is why some dams produce predominantly males or females, regardless of which male they are bred to. This fact has confused many breeders on exactly WHO determines the sex.EQUALITY Among the sexes Lest thou stud dog get chauvinistic ideas please read this to him. According to the unassailable Encyclopaedia Britannica under Heredity it is a proven fact that both sire and dam in mammals contribute an equal 50 of their genetic make-up to their offspring. However, just as no two zebras have the same stripe pattern, no two littermates are exactly alike in genotype or phenotype, except in the case of identical twins. Each parent gives 50 of hisher genetic structure and gives different genes to each individual offspring. That is why we see littermates who do not resemble each other and littermates who do resemble each other but produce quite differently. Ch. Paww-Paww Libido looks almost identical to his brother, Ch. Paww-Paww Whodunit, but Libido produces, predominantly, high set ears and redorange coat colors, while Whodunit produces low set The Pom Reader May 1990ears and buff colored coats.IN CASE THOU DOESNT KNOW Genotype is the invisible part of the dog, that which is inside him, his inherited genetic make-up. The genotype determines which phenotypes can arise in any given sequence of environments in which the dog who carries that genotype lives and develops. Phenotype is what we see when we admire or dislike a dogs conformation. It is the total outward makeup structure, coat, head, legs, movement, ear set, color, eye shape, size, intelligence and behavior traits. The phenotype changes continuously the same individual shows different phenotypes in puppyhood, in adulthood and in old age. Both genotype and phenotype have BOTH a genetic and an environmental component. A trait that is hereditary, such as skin color in man, can be modified by sunlight - i.e., tanning. Conversely, a trait that is super sensitive to environment, such as weight, may very well be genetically conditioned i.e., some super-chunky dogs do not lose weight on a programmed diet, unless you actually starve them, which WHO wouldAND ID LIKE TO KNOW WHY One particular sire, who was never around his offspring, had the habit of leaping in midstride while on lead, doing the same feat as the airs above ground that the franed-to-do-it Lippizan stallions perform he was bred to 2 females. One totally unrelated, the other a half sister. Each mating produced 2 females. One female from each litter developed the same untrained airs above ground feat while on lead, and neither of the dams ever even thought of such acrobatics Another sire who was also never around the offspring insisted, completely unbidden, to patty-cake for attention and also to stand on his hind legs to stool, and when in a confined crate for traveling would persistently stool in his water dish, but would not stool in his crate if no water dish was provided. His subsquent litter of 4 females were born toContinued next pageISOlympia continued...his sires granddaughter and one of them developed both his idiosyncratic habits of patty-caking and stooling on front legs and in water dishes when confined to small crates but only in crates IF there was a water dish present. And her dam has never had such habits TO GET OFF THE SUBJECT OF SEX And idiosyncracies lets end our potpourri with these simple hints.Ivomec, a 1 percent solution of Ivermectin, given orally - consult your vet for dosage according to poundage and have the dog checked for heart worms first - will effectively prevent all worms, including heartworms, and ear mites. It is given once a month, but do not give the dosage all at once, as it tastes horrible and some dogs will foam at the mouth we give it in small doses, the usual four-pounder getting .45 milligrams, over a period of about 1-2 minutes, letting them breathe in between. Funny thing - a doggy friend of OLYMPIAs was presented with her husbands problem of ringworm in his hands from having dug around in the garden dirt she figured if Ivomec worked on dogs, itd work on HIM. She figured up the dosage according to package directions on poundage and gave it to him. He said it tasted AWFUL but 3 days later his ringworms were G-O-N-E and he is still alive and quite well [Ed. note - you have GOT to be kidding. J] Pigeon racing people I know give it monthly to their birds to prevent mites and the dogs in OLYMPIALAND who are on it never are bothered by even an occasional FLEA.IVE SAID IT BEFORE AND WILL SAY IT AGAIN There is absolutely nothing that ends flea and roach problems like Siphotrol, the Plus II spray and foggers. Spray it everywhere liberally, it leaves no oily stains even on furniture, and set off foggers and enter the premesis 2-4 hours later when it is DRY enough for a cat to walk on and you will end your flea problems, providing you also de-flea your dogs and cats the same day. We use Paramite dip to package directions for the adult dogs even on PG bitches up to a week prior to whelping and Pyrethrins Dip by Vet-Kern on puppies and the resident cat with Vet-Kerns Ovitrol Plus flea spray for in-betweens when an occasional flea gets on. We have been flea-free for 4 years on this program and we live rural with cow pasture, coons, possums and what-have-you surrounding us In sandy, southern FloridaIVE HEARD That some folks are advocating NOT giving their puppies full strength 1cc of their immunization shots for fear they will have a severe reaction and die. My vet, who knows TOYS like the back of his hand, says this idea is absurd IF the puppy is worm free and in good health prior to the immunization shots the odds of a reaction severe enough to cause death are about the same odds as winning the Florida lotto, which is thirteen million and 399 thousand to 1 Far worse would be to leave puppies without proper immunization, especially if your puppy is around heavy traffic from other dog people or their dogs. The tried and true method at OLYMPIALAND for the past quarter of a century has been be sure pups are worm-free feed them well the day of the immunization and 12 hour prior give them a 2 inch ribbon of Nutri-Cal and we have never had a reaction, even in the tiniest of pups Currently we use Ft. Dodge The Pup- pyshot and have for three years. We immunize at 9, 12, and 15 weeks, although the vet says, and so does the vaccine maker, that the shots can be given at 2-week intervals. Since we do not let pups go before 16 weeks this system and timing has worked for us. Consult your vet and TRUST his advice, is my advice in all situations, but for the sake of your puppies do NOT leave them under-immunized simply because you heard an absurd idea not based on fact.As for the Florida Lotto, this weekend it is worth approximately 20 mil and Olympia only bought 10 bucks worth of tickets...Until the dog howls again...OLYMPIAJDSPOMPOUSPOMSHome OfCH. Most of the time 1 enjoy meeting my fans, but there are times when it can become most tedious and irritating. And that is when they mispronounce my name. Or more exactly, my breed.Oh how cute. A POMERIAN. Isnt she sweet A POMAGERANIUM. Honey, come quick A PELLERENIAN Why, Ms. Johnson, thats the sweetest POONEROOLIUM I ever did seeSheesh. But it doesnt happen just to me. Case in point...A NEW FORM OF SNOBBERYFrom the Humane Society of North Texas NEWSSome people are snobs about their ancestors others about their colleges. And who doesnt know a man whos snobbish about the kind of car he drives Over the last few years, however, weve noticed a new form of snob - the purebred dog snob This is the person who insists on adopting only one breed of dog and refuses to consider any other animal. Usually they call the shelter and ask whether we have the special breed they want. This snobbery has its funny side when we hear the mangled names of dog breeds used by some callers - mispronunciations so delightful that Shelter manager Peggy Irvine has started listing them in a notebook. An easy error was made by the man who asked for a LABORATORY RETRIEVER. Of course, he meant a Labrador. But what about the other man who wanted a LAVATORY RETRIEVERAnd that woman who asked if we had a MANHATTAN. And a man looking for the same breed asked for a MANSFIELD. He quickly sensed his mistake and changed it to a MANCHESTER FIELD. Another man wanted one of those aristocratic long-haired dogs...an AFGHANAS1AN. And a woman asked whether we had any BRITTLE SPANIELS Why not Who wants a limber dog An IRISH SETTLER is better. And the SAINT BARNYARD wanted by one man might get along very well with the DUCKSHOUND wanted by a woman. Variations on the latter breed are DODSON and DASH-HARD and even DUCK-SHUSHStill another fine German breed and a true aristocrat is that large grey dog with the most mangled name of all - here are a few versions WIREMINGER WEENIERAN- NER WINNEBAGO WIREMIRE .WEENEMYER most mangled of all WIEMARANIUM or VITAWAMMER. What about the BELCHIN SHEPHERD a man had heard of...got any of those A woman asked about a GEN-MAN SHEN- The Pom Reader May 1990MAN. She wanted a watch dog. Many people now prefer only the LASA PASO, also known as the APPLE LOSHO. And one man not from Massachusetts wanted a BOXING TERRIER, another a BOILER COLLAR. Collies are unfashionable now, but SHELBIES or SHELSIES are in demand. But to some callers only a big fierce dog is wanted Give them a DUMMERMAN...or a DORMAN...if not a DOME- PEEN otherwise known as a DOPERMAN. Also called a DOBEMAN-PINCHERMAN and DOBERMAN SPENCER. In a class of its own is that rare avian canine the DERMAN PIGEON. Were still wondering about the SHA-WABBLEThe CHI-WOW-WOW is clear enough. The so-called barkless DIMEJI is now popular...and much less dangerous than the PYROMANIAN. One caller asked for that roamer the BEETLE. Another insisted that we tell him whether or not we had a little PEEKANEEX not to be confused with a toy PODDLE.Put the last two together and you have a PINKAPOOLANS. But that wouldnt do...nobody wants a mixed-breed dogDSo you see, dear readers, the problem is widespread. This outrage must be stopped Therefore, I have come up with the solution...I am having a T-shirt printed up for Shannon to wear on our walks. As most all serious Pomeranians fanciers are, in one way or another, involved in campaigning their Poms for AKC Championship points, we feel that it is important to keep tabs on this area. The procedures for tallying the point scale are as follows Exhibitors are credited with all AKC Championship points won in the calendar year, as published in the AKC Show, Obedience, and Field Trials Awards Book. Only this publications will be used for point credit. Many times the actual show dates will vary from the date of publication i.e., a September show may notbe published until November. The Gazettes calendar year runs from about October of the previous year until September of the present calendar year.Points are allotted to the REGISTERED OWNER OF THE DOG ON THE DAY OF COMPETITION. When I became a dog person, my goal changed to exhibiting a dog in a World Show...The 1991 World Show will be held in Dortmund, West Germany during the month of June. Since there are approximately a dozen AKC breeds who call Germany their homeland this would be an appropriate time to go home. Some of you are tempted to go off to the World Show but are turned off by group travel. Youd like to go but just dont know where to start or how to do it. A few may be interested in sightseeing and kennel visits but are afraid it cant be done. Put away your fears and start packing your bags While I dont claim to be an expert, I can guide you through the essential paperwork and give you recommendations so you can enter the show, sightsee with a dog, and get to visit with other breeders.Who Should GoNot everyone is cut out for world travel. If you panic at the thought of dealing with another language, different customs or strange foods, you might find this trip isnt for you. Its better to know it at the start or you may be miserable when you should be having the time of your life.Every dog person who goes off to the World Show should realize that he becomes an ambassador for his breed, his dog club and his country. People who are going should represent everything that is good about America and American dog shows. You should be a good sportsman the type of person who can say congratulations or nice win even when they think that the dog didnt deserve it. A person who spreads out his gear in limited quarters and tells people they cant set up in a spot because it is being saved, doesnt belong at this type of event. Of course, a good dog person would never leave a dog unattended and uncrated in a hotel room or use the room to bathe the dog. Your behavior must be exemplary with no ifs, ands or buts. The dog you take with you should be special in several ways. First, he should be a good representative of his breed. Be aware that our standards in America may be different from the international standard that the dog will be judged by at the show. Any dog that goes with you should be a good traveler. Dealing with a carsick dog or a dog that easily gets diarrhea because of a change in water or food will make your trip ten times more difficult. No matter how good the dog is, it isntworth it. Also, only take a dog who is in good health generally and at the time of the trip. You do not want to spend time searching for a veterinarian and caring for a sick dog. Things can happen on a trip just like they do on a dog show circuit but dont book trouble in advance by a poor choice. Also, you must have a well-behaved dog. It will be expected that your dog will be under your complete control at all times.Travel DocumentsYou will need a valid U.S. passport. A visa is not needed to travel to West Germany. If you do not have a passport, obtaining one is fairly easy. Many post offices carry the forms that youll need to apply for it. Passport photos do not need to be professional portraits. A number of camera stores and even photographers offer instant passport photographs at a reasonable price. [Ed. note - many large department stores, and almost all large Sears stores offer this service. J] Usually theres a rush in spring to apply for passports so I would recommend doing it around the first week in January. For Germany your dog will need a health certificate in German or a certified translation of an English health certificate. The certificate should not be more than 10 days old and it must have the seal of the state veterinarian. On this certificate it should indicate that the dog has had a rabies shot not sooner than 30 days prior to departure nor more than 12 months prior to departure. Ive had my dogs examined by my own veterinarian who fills out my dual language health certificate and a state Department of Agriculture certificate. I take both forms to the state veterinarians office and have them stamped with the state seal. If you live quite a distance from your states office, I would suggest calling and making arrangements to express mail the certificate to them with sufficient money for them to express mail it back to you. On some trips Ive had these documents carefully scrutinized while on others they were never even checked. If youre without them, your dog will not be going to the showMaking EntriesEntries for the World Show will probably close at least two months or more in advance of the show. Write to the VDH Verband fur das Deutsche Hundewesen, Westfalendamm174, 4600 Dortmund 1, West Germany, in January asking for an entry form rather than a premium list. Please make sure you ask them to send it to you by air mail, otherwise you could miss the closing date. You can write to them in English but keep it simple. The entry form will probably be in at least three if not four languages. Usually one will be German and another French. If there is nothing in English, do not panic. Most of it can be figured out see side bar with definitions or you can find a Germanspeaking person to help you along. A dog to be entered in the champion class must have a title recognized by the FCI Federation Cynologique Internationale and the AKC championship is NOT. In order to be entered for the Open Class, the dog must be of age. For example, the Eurodogshow in 1989 required dogs to be 15 calendar months of age for the Open class. If you are entering a young dog, ask the VDH in your letter what class or classes are available in which your dog may compete. Theres one thing I should mention which is very important in filling out your entry form in listing the dogs birth date, list the day of the month first, then the month, i.e. March 12,1989 would be written 12-3-89. An incorrectly recorded birthdate can cause no end of confusion, especially if your dog was born in the first twelve days of a month.Entry fees will be in Deutsche Marks. Many banks offer a bank check that can be made out in foreign currencies. Some banks charge an exorbitant fee for this service so it pays to shop around or go in with several other people on a check and mail all your entries together. When you submit your entries, include a note asking that the entry verifications be sent to you by airmail. In the past when Ive attended German national or European shows in Germany, theres been a place on the entry form for you to purchase a catalogue. Its very convenient and they give you a gutschein coupon which enables you to pick up your catalogue as you enter the show. You may also receive other coupons which are good for free biscuits and a can of dog food at show booths.Make sure you bring your health certificate to the dog show. Its as much of a requirement to enter the show grounds as your entry pass.Continued next monthThe Pom Reader May 1990om tfleacerWi8 VVvCH.MIXON S ROSSI OF FRIPPE- -.'bO'N.- _r 'S-StefYourShowcase for Purebred PomsSUBSCRIPTION RATESIn U.S. Dollars11 Issues Per Year Domestic24.00 Third Class Post 40.00 First Class Post Foreign Rates Upon Request Sample Issues 3.00 each Back Issues 3.00 each subject to availabilityADVERTISING RATESIn U.S. DollarsMULTIPLE BISCH.
