For it only takes a slight shift of popular opinion for our freedoms to goUP IN SMOKE.It wasnt all that long ago that cigarettes were very much in vogue we were not only allowed, but encouraged, to smoke. Im old enough to remember when the airlines used to hand out miniature packets of cigarettes for passengers to enjoy in flight and quick-fingered kids to use for barter on the playground at grammar school, and many of the advertising jingles now banned still come readily to mind. Dog fanciers of long standing all recall the cloud- cover of smoke that hung heavy above our heads at Madison Square Garden. Even smokers found it disgusting and were all glad that those days have come and gone. Whether smokers ever actually outnumbered non-smokers in the general population I doubt smokers did, however, enjoy widespread acceptance and approval. Today theyre banished to the windy alleyways and can often be seen puffing away in the cold and in the rain and it wont be long before the smoking of cigarettes will be proscribed, period. Most view this development with pleasure some with dread. But I for one cannot help but draw a comparison between it and the freedom we now enjoy to go where we please, when we want, with our dogs.It should come as no shock that there is a segment of the population that has no use for our canine friends. Dogs are viewed as smelly, unpredictable and even downright dangerous by a larger number of people than I care to admit, and this attitude is reflected on an ever-more-apparent basis. Landlords and hoteliers are slamming doors in the faces of the fancy, and public facilities are denying access to groups and events devoted to dogs. And yet I fear that we are simply turning the other cheek like the smokers who gather in groups and enjoy common interests wherever allowed, dog fanciers simply go where theyre welcome. That the welcome mats are outThe Pom Reader May 199604fewer and fewer places is a problem weve yet to address. One place where Welcome must be displayed in neon these days is Louisville, home of the phenominal Kentuckiana Cluster. In a few short years these shows have grown from solid, respected events to the sports blockbuster production. Topping out with 5,755 dogs at Louisville KC on Sunday, the total entry for the five-day circuit reached 19,246. The success of the cluster is not difficult to understand the Kentucky Fair Exposition Center must be rated one of the finest sites in the States even with these huge numbers the Clubs only occupy about one-fourth of the facility and the Pedigree Awards dinner at Churchill Downs is largely held to be one of the sports top functions. The glittering affair is truly first-class all the way and the circuit is second to none. Spin doctor extraordinaire Jean Spaulding needs employ no exaggeration in her press releases for the numbers speak for themselves. As Dan Jones, show chair for LKC and guiding light of the cluster, said Watch out, Crufts. Our congratulations to the tremendous team that has set a new Standard for the sport. As we view the positive growth of the sport with pleasure, we must also keep an eye to the world at large and its perception of us as well. As sanctions tighten against the dog lovers of the world, Group Five fanciers may be the last to feel the pinch Pom people have been sneaking their dogs into places for years. I am reminded of a story, not for tender ears, but Pom-and dog-related nonetheless...A lady was in England she fell inlove with a pup. She bought it to take home. At Heathrow she discovered that the airline had a NO PET policy she became distraught. In desperation, she stuffed the little fellow down into her brassiere and boarded the plane. They took off.No sooner were they airborne when she started to fidget and fuss and squirm the passenger to her right grew concerned. He offered to call the flight attendant for assistance. Our puppy lover begged him not to yet she grew ever more uncomfortable and agitated. Finally she was forced to explain. You see, she said, this airline does not allow pets so I have a puppy hidden in my blouse. Being a dog lover, the man was sympathetic. I see - and he wasnt housebroken, right The woman smiled sadly and replied, No, he wasnt housebroken...and he wasnt weaned, either.Well, levity aside, it is my firm conviction that through responsible ownership and public education we can avert any widespread sanctions against the dog lovers of this earth, and perhaps relieve some of the restrictions we now see. Comparing the love of purebred dogs with addiction to cigarettes may seem extreme, but it simply punctuates the point that should we become an irritant we will be out in the cold, like the smokers in the rain. Yet through positive press and acknowledgement of all the good we derive from our canine friends, there is truly illumination at the end of the troubling tunnel.Anybody got a lightA Ck ampionsmpU StackV yEUKANUBA K,NAlt EUKANUBA'\ Premium Quality Food For Popptoa Laiyc D11Cf- EUKANUBA ^5 f I. - I I . That newborn puppies are bom without the capacity to adapt to environmental stressWith proper care and attention to their special needs, many neonatal deaths of puppies could be prevented. The crucial aspects to watch are the puppys body temperature and weight. Other important signs to watch are the general appearance, muscle tone, mobility, sound of the cry, and the sucking reflex.Healthy puppies are round and firm. They move vigorously and compete for nipples with their litter- mates. The mouth and tongue should be moist and the skin pink. When you pick up a puppy, he should stretch and wiggle energetically in your hand. Newborns should seldom cry and if they do it indicates that a puppy is cold, hungry or in pain. Newborns will pile or crawl together for warmth.Puppies that are sick will be limp or cold. They will show a lack of interest in nursing. Distressed puppies are hyperactive and will crawl around looking for help and fallasleep away from the warmth of the dam or littermates. They will try to sleep with their legs apart and their heads and necks bent to the side. The cry is piercing and will go on for several minutes. If the body temperature drops lower than it should be, the breathing rate is reduced. Signs of dehydration are lack of moisture in the mouth, loss of muscle tone, and weakness. If the skin is pinched, it will stay in a fold. Many times at this point, the puppy will be rejected by the dam who senses that the puppy is going to die. This condition can be reversed if the puppys temperature is brought back to normal slowly.A chilled puppy must be warmed gradually Using a heating pad causes dilation of skin vessels, expenditure of calories, and a greater need for oxygen. The best way to warm a puppy is to tuck him down beneath a sweater or jacket next to your skin. This may take two hours Formula should never be fed to a chilled puppy as his stomach and small intestines have stopped working normally. If formula is given the puppy will bloat and vomit. A puppy could utilize a glucose and water solution or honey and water given in small amounts and slowly.Puppies should gain weight everyday. They should be weighed on a gram scale daily for two weeks. A sudden drop in weight with diarrhea is due to water losses. A balanced electrolyte solution is needed.Puppies that lose weight and do not begin to gain by 72 hours are usually poor survival prospects. The first few hours and days of the puppy are most important and require constant watching.nm ID YOU KNOW... That newborns can have several diseases even if the dam has had all the necessary shotsNewborns can suffer from bleeding as early as three to four days. It is usually due to a lack of prothrombin, a clotting factor in the blood. Bleeding will occur from the body openings and could be the result of trauma during whelping. A puppy can be treated with an injection of vitamin K.Puppies can also suffer from toxic milk syndrome and the primary cause of this is mastitis, and infection of the milk glands of the dam. Puppies that are affected will often drool, cry, and appear distressed. A swollen anus, diarrhea, and bloating are the most common symptoms. Puppies will have to be treated for diarrhea and dehydration and fed by hand.Another problem is navel infection. An umbilical stump can be the site of an infection. This can be caused by contamination in the whelping box from stool, spoiled food, and most likely from the dental disease of the dam which is transferred to the puppy while cutting the umbilical cord. The navel stump will appear red and swollen and may drain pus. The danger of this condition is the direct effect it will have on the liver. Iodine should be applied to the area. It may be necessary to place the puppy on medication. Treatment should be the use of a diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide to cleanse the area and then panalog could be applied.Herpes virus is an insidious disease and both the dam and puppies will appear to be healthy. The early signs of the herpes virus is the cessation of nursing, the lack of ability to hold body temperature, painful crying, loss of coordination and yellow to green diarrhea. The puppy will have abdominal muscle spasms and will usually die in 24 hours. To prevent this disease, it is necessary to keep the temperature in the whelping box stable. This disease is usually transmitted during whelping while the puppies are passing through the birth canal. There is no vaccine for this and affected puppies that maintain a body temperature of 100 degrees F may survive. Recovered puppies could have kidney failure at a later age.It is important to watch newborns carefully for any problem and to handle the problem as quickly as possible as puppies go down fast... and hours count.piM ID YOU KNOW... With proper inocu- lations your dog will be almost completely protected against diseaseMany diseases are highly contagious but do we really know the symptoms of these diseases Listed below are a few that could affect your dog if not up to date on his shots.DISTEMPER - Infects the lungs, intestines, and nervous system. Dogs will lose appetite, get depressed, seem chilled with fever, go into paralysis and convulsions.RABIES - Acute disease of the central nervous system. Dogs will go through depression, then irritation and finally paralysis. Dogs will appear cross and change positions often. There will be a loss of appetite. Within 4 to 8 days after the onset of paralysis, the dog will die. HEPATITIS - Is a viral disease. Dogs will be drowsy, vomit, seem very thirsty, lose appetite, and run a high fever. There may be swelling of the neck, and abdomen. Death can occur quickly.LEPTOSPIROSIS- Infects the kidneys. Symptoms are diarrhea and a yellowish-brown discoloration of the jaws, tongue and teeth. This can be cured if caught quickly. PARVOVIRUS- Is a gastrointestinal virus. This disease strikes quickly and death can occur in days. This is common in puppies and the first indication is usually loss of appetite. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and listlessness. PARAINFLUENZA - Symptoms are similar to bronchitis in people. This could be called kennel cough. Signs are a harsh dry cough, loss of appetite, runny nose, runny eyes and listlessness.I want to thank my vet, Dr. Tom Hentges for his assistance with this article.Pim ID YOU KNOW... Along with lots of sunshine, the hot weather can take a toll on your dogAs responsible dog owners, we should have safety concerns. A pet should never be left in a closed vehicle unattended. The temperature can soar and the pet could suffer from a heatstroke. Signs of a heatstroke are panting, drooling, rapid pulse, and fever. At all times, your dog should have access to fresh water. Water bowls that are outside should be changed daily as mosquitoes could lay larva in them.It is necessary for your dog to have proper identification at all times. A tattoo or microchip is the best method.Your dog should be exercised or walked on a lead to prevent accidents and injuries. It is best to limit exercise during high temperatures and the early morning hours or late evening is the best time for your dog to be outdoors.Along with the hot weather, it is necessary to be in tune with your dogs health. Also, your animal should be checked for fleas and ticks. A lot of lawn and garden products are hazardous. Be sure the plants your dog comes in contact with are not toxic. A dog owner in my area recently told me she lost her dog to kidney failure due to a spray that had been used in her neighbors yard. The spray blew into her yard and her dog laid in the spray and walked in it. The paws and skin absorbed the toxic substance and it got into the blood stream.m ID YOU KNOW... The skin being truly the largest organ in the body, is in fact the easiest way for-the body to eliminate toxins. We have been conditioned by the medical establishment that when we see any skin abnormality, it is to be viewed as troublesome and unsightly and must be gotten rid of it as fast as possible i.e. the usual route of antibiotics and possible steroids. When nothing but conventional treatment is used it leads to a suppression of symptoms. But what happened to the toxins the body was trying to eliminate The problem may appear gone, and may stay that way for a short term. When the body feels up to housecleaning again, the symptoms may return. Again, if suppression methods are used for treatment, you are effectively pushing back the problem deeper into the body. Soon the body will give up trying to eliminate through the skin and will choose to go through the organs instead, leading to a much more serious illness.Holistic methods will help the body to deal with the underlying problem so that a true healing response is obtained. There are a great variety of methods used and all are aimed at helping the body help itself. There are cases when a problem warrants antibiotic treatment. Sometimes you have to put the fire out before the clean up crew can go in and do the job. When this is combined with giving the body support holistically, good results can be achieved.I will try to touch briefly here on a few of the more common skin problems and some good remedies to treat them. In cases of serious illness veterinarian advise should always be sought.Demodectic Mange has become quite a problem which usually afflicts the younger dog. However, chronic cases are becoming more frequent in the older animal. The usual course of treatment after diagnosis is to use harsh chemical dips until all signs of the mites are gone. In severe unresponsive cases, Ivermectin is being tried on a daily basis. A problem with active mange is a compromised immune system which must be addressed. Dips only further hurt the immune system and in cases of very sick animals have actually caused death. We have been very successful in treating mange holistically.Topically Lavender oil is used alternately with lemon juice directly on the spots. Internally the immune system must be helped. A glandular nutritional supplement called Immuplex combined with BHI homeopathic remedies called Skin and Inflammation are used. NR Herbal Compounds are also excellent to help boost the immune system and should be used regularly for maintenance and prevention. This is a Juliette de Bairacli Levy formula thatcombines garlic, sage, thyme, eucalyptus, wormwood, rue and vegetable charcoal that has given excellent results over decades of usage. This is wonderful when given routinely to all dogs and cats as a preventative and for their overall good health. Vitamins are also important in the mange case. Supplementation of vitamins, E C B and zinc should be given. Diet is of course important and as much fresh food should be given as possible. If the mange surfaced after a period of vaccination, then detoxifying with the homeopathic remedies Thuja and Sulphur are good to help clear the body of the residual effects.Dermatitis and staphylococcus infections are common problems. They can occur by themselves or as secondary infections. The same homeopathics and supplements as mentioned previously can be used, in conjunction with BHI Lymphatic.BY MARINA ZACHARIASThe Pom Reader May 199615The apples didn't fall far from the tree...Female 10 weeksf TweeksMale 12 weeks aVMale 12These show prospects are for sale. THANK YOUSecond of all it is official that Julie Moreno will be judging the regular classes at the 1997 APC Specialty in New York and now lets see all of you who said We hope so show up Charlotte Creed will be doing Sweepstakes, as previously announced. It may seem very premature to announce this now, but you would be v-e-r-y surprised how many people start wondering, or worrying, about such faraway dates and judges Or would you be surprisedIt is with great pleasure to also announce that our Pom Reader editor, Mr. Joe McGinnis, has been invited to judge the Sweepstakes at the American Pomeranian Club Summer Specialty. Hosted by the Puget Sound Pomeranian Club, held in Olympia, Washington on August 6th, 1996..Please note, that Mr. McGinnis has not asked me to announce this, and was very modest in accepting this judging invitation, and it is entirely on my own in this column that I do soPom folks who previously knew this fact have called to ask me what Joe likes in Poms. To answer this I harken back to a day long ago when a breeder judge was a guest in my home and fellow guests asked that particular judge what type he liked. His answer Icant say offhand, but I know it when I see it By which, he meant - in the ring. And on that particular dayIn my job I am highly exposed to exhibitors who often ask such questions as whom they should show to, whether their dog is good enough, which handler they should choose, and if politics plays a part in our dog sport...among other questions too numerous to go into here.My most pertinent answer is, you must be present to win its akin to winning a lotto if you dont buy a ticket, how could you possibly win And if you dont win that lotto, you might the next, but if one loss, or many losses, upsets your appetite, then dont play the game anymore. Game The dog fancy, it is supposed to be a sport, but often it is not. Too many factors enter into it to make it a true sport. In my mind the true sport is in breeding not quantity, from which percentages are the result, but in breeding to upgrade quality and to have just enough well-planned breedings to keep yourself, and possibly, a few other exhibitors striving to show better dogs to the judges. Most generally these days, in so many breeds, ours especially now, the above rule of sport has radically changed and breeding has become, to too many, a game, where quality does emerge from the percentage value only and breeders are striving to sell to exhibitors in order that their own reputation, rather than the reputation of the breed itself, is promoted. Not all breeders are into this game today, thankheaven, but far too many are.But back to the exhibitors who query about handlers, judges, politics and whether their dog is good enough to either finish or become a special contender in Group and Best In Show RingsProfessional handlers make up the vast majority who exhibit today, and it is very understandable, as todays lifestyle with both husband and wife working to keep the household going, leaves precious little time for ownerexhibitors to get out there, especially when it comes to a special, which has to be shown nearly every weekend and many times on week days, depending on the circuit involved.I am often asked, which handler should I hire That is a difficult question, which I can only answer by usually saying, get one whose past experience in finishing and specialing in your breed is well known. There are exceptions galore to every rule of thumb, but many handlers tell me it is not always smart for them to show a breed the judges have not been used to seeing them with. Sometimes not just the breed itself, but the group into which it falls. Many people also wish to have the handler in their area, where they can see the dog shown from time to time and have it easily facilitated to get the dog home for a little RR. This can put a crimp into the plan, at times. If I had a special and wanted to make it a top special in its breed, that problem would be lowest on my priority list. Yet to others, it is of prime importance. The Pom Reader May 199621As to the question, is my dog good enough for finishing andor group-winning contention, it is a good question that has no definite answer. I have seen mediocre specimens of every breed finish rather quickly, prime specimens who take forever to finish and seen specials who make it to top rankings who are far from perfect. The old adage there is no perfect dog is not trite but very true and judges who know their business usually look at the overall good, see the faults, and judge on the overall basis. However, many top dogs, or new champions, are far, far less than perfect and they make it. WhySometimes it is luck and timing, sometimes it is the handler knowing which judge to show to, sometimes it is knowing what type a certain judge likes, and sometimes it is downright political. To know if your dog is good enough, you either have to trust your own eye, without rose-colored glasses on, or the handler you choose, who should tell you honestly his thoughts on the matter. At times the latter can be hazardous, as todays compelling market for handlers to exist and make their living can bring cash to the eyes and though it is deplorable it does exist. Thats the American way. Free enterprise and making a dollar is the basic tenet, but not with all handlers. This is where you have to choose your handler with the utmost preplanning and checking-out.An honest handler will tell you I can finish the dog, but it is not Specials material. Or the handler will then step aside and advise the owner to select a handler who can do the job - refer to the paragraph on handlers being known for winning in certain breeds or group of dogs. Now this is where the game comes in and the sport goes out the window. Many judges I know of, or have listened to, will look at the dog, whatever its breed or handler, and make a decision based on the day of showing and not give a hangnail about whether the handler is known in that breed or group, nor care if the handler is out of his usual territory.Territory is important, it seems. I have heard judges say Yes, I haveplaced your dog highly before, but he flew all the way here to get to me and I just cant see that. This is not your turf. Some judges have explained this to me as meaning I hesitate to place that dog highly since it was flown I just for me and it will look political. Others, without saying so, really mean that on so- and-sos turf they are going to run with the territorial thing. To me thats like slicing a pie and making sure everyone gets a piece. On the other hand, I dislike the possibility that the judge may question the political thing and not place a dog highly because it was flown in from other turf.In this instance, my mislike would not be so bad if the handler or ownerexhibitor flew in for the 2- or 3- day event and showed, win or lose, in all. But everybody wants to win. That is the game. No one wants to lose, if they can help it, that is human nature and it goes, in the dog game, hand in hand with the pocket book of the owner and the reputation of the dog in the stats. Is there politics in the dog game I do not believe it is the type of politics that mean the owner or handler paid off the judge, although a few cases have been well known. The politics can arise from merely a former handler becoming a judge, seeing only former handlers on the other end of the leash, or from a judge knowing the dogs wins from an advertising campaign, or from judges talking with one another at the judges hospitality rooms of the shows they are judging.Names of dogs and their good or bad points are spoken of, who owns it, who shows it, how many Group firsts, or Bests in Show it has received, even pedigrees are discussed. The dog sport has grown so large that very few judges can know every little in-and-out on every breed. So this sort of communication happens. Just as it does between breeders, owners, handlers and ownerexhibitors. It is the old grapevine routine. It is definitely a part of the dog game today and there is nothing that is going to change it. Is that politics You be the judge.............But do not be dismayed. Oursport is still full of wonderful events, such as an old-time breeder receiving afirst Best In Show, with no advance publicity or grapevine campaigning and little people wining 5 point majors or group firsts where they least expect it. This gladdens the heart and means that the sport of dogs is not dead, nor dying, but still very much alive....only you have to take the good with the bad and know your own dog. If you dont know your own dogs quality for its particular career goals, then you must ask your handler to tell you the truth as heshe knows it, or inquire of other handlers what they think or, very discreetly, ask the judges who have judged it. You must also know your dog for what it is or isnt and keep pursuing your goals, with another dog if need be, for if you, the breeder or owner or ownerexhibitor, give up when losses occur, then there is no more sport of dogs, only a game that the judges will have to fall prey to and many of our finest judges would not care to be involved, either.Last, but far from least, when you know you have a good dog, you must remember that in every breed there are certain types and fads, as it were, and you can be lead a merry chase in finishing or specialing your dog if you listen to all the rumors you hear, or even to your handler, who may be at a loss for words as to why heshe is not winning with your dog. It can also happen that the dog is not being shown correctly, or groomed correctly, which can drastically change the overall appearance that judges are looking for. After all, a judge has about 2 minutes to see your dog perform in the ring. If the dog should be shown on a loose lead, for instance, but is instead strung up like a terrier, it can change the total movement and there simply isnt enough time for a judge to come into your home and see the normal gait the dog exhibits, nor to see the dogs coat in its natural state. All these factors contribute to the dog game and to how the judges perceive what we are showing them, to truly believe in the sport of dog showing, we must take our licks and learn our lacks and try and try again.Until the dog howls again............OLYMPIA AKA Lois Ciliberto 20044 StamatDr. Land OLakes, FL 34639 Tel 831-996-5499Fax 813-996-9613aka Lais CilibertoThe Pom Reader May 1996Apolloette Talk Of The Town D by Great Elms Tinker Toy x Apolloette Fancy PantsBreederOwner Marlene Presser Marlin PresserBrynrose Memory Of JamelB by CH Jamels Texas Kane Of Sharel x Jamels Diamonds HoLe Tara BreederOwner S.W. My family consists of five children, and I fall in the middle. My two sisters Diane and Joanne are seven and five years older, while my two brothers, Buddy and Tommy, are two and three years younger. Consequently, I was alone without a playmate...but that doesnt mean I was lonely. My mother worked outside the home as an assistant Vice President of a bank, so we were often left to entertain ourselves. Mamma said I was forever dragging home a dog or cat Id found on or near the golf course where we lived, and my dad, Roy was a Pro. My brother Tommy acquired an affection for raccoons and since he never asked for much they indulged him. We obtained a baby malefrom San Antonio, but soon realized they became quite testy when mature. The golf course offered a great location for releasing our Randy Raccoon, a process we later repeated as our next male displayed the same traits as he reached puberty. We must have learned our lesson after that, as I dont remember any more raccoons.I dont know if it was the raccoons, but I soon realized longhaired animals entranced me and a long succession of pets followed. The most memorable being two toy Poodles and two Persian cats. The family tolerated these animals, but drew the line on Bebe. Bebe was an extravagance I indulged myself once I became employed in 1970 as an operator at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. She was a beautifulOld English Sheepdog puppy with big glaring eyes and long fluffy hair, making her appear larger than her 15 pounds. We were already housing brother Tommys Dachshund bitch with five nursing puppies, and I suppose Bebe was the boiling point for Daddy, as he promptly gave me the ultimatum to sell her or move out Needless to say, Bebe and I moved in with co-worker Susie Mangus and even though being on my own at 17 proved difficult at times, I have never regretted the decision to defend my pet.Being an avid animal aficionada requires an income, and since Ive yet to win the lottery too busy to play, I remain employed with SW Bell. As an operator in the days before direct distance dialing hadr_Itsa dogs life...Majestic StyleTop left Ruthie Steppers mom top right Beau Peep center Majic lower left Sassy, and lower right, TickieThe Pom Reader May 199625its advantage, one could talk and flirt with the customers, stumble through broken Spanish for non-English speakers, wince with embarrassment at the colorful language of shrimpers on the Marine Band, and get chewed out for talking to friends on the board. But I soon discovered the men who worked in the technical jobs earned much more money than we lowly ladies. So, being an able and usually broke female, I utilized Affirmative Action and soon became one of the first women to migrate into the formerly Man-only world of Plant. It had its drawbacks, and one of the more humorous was our titles. For instance, while the men were referred to as Frameman, Repeaterman, and Switchman, we women became unofficially of course Framedames, Repeaterlessman, and my title Switchbitch. It was, and still is, taken in good humor, but today were all referred to in the more politically-correct title of Communications Technician. My first encounter with Pomeranians was through my roommate Suzies mother, Nellie Angelle. She owned two gorgeous, huge coated, deep, deep reds who survived to the ripe old ages of 14 and 15.1 later learned they were from the Schoenbergs Aristic line. Nellie later bought a Pom from my second litter, the same litter that spawned the Pom Fever that still afflicts me today. In 1980 I found myself at yet another Bell School, this time in Dallas. My mother had recently fallen in love with a bank customers beautiful white Pom named Jack Frost. She had to have one, so I found an ad in the Dallas newspaper for a cream male 6 weeks old.Named Mikey-Macho, he returned to Corpus with me and after my mother trying for 6 months, unsuccessfully, to house train him he moved in with me and my two Persian cats...REMEMBER THE HAIR THING Mickey must have been afflicted with A.D.D.. He was never still, sleepy, or satisfied. Now, Ive always believed Poms are happiest when theyre with other Poms. So, I naturally thought, Wouldnt it be nice for Mickey to have a cute little companion to play with Thus, began my search for a bitch, a search which eventually led me to Lula Mae Collier in New Braunfels, Texas. When I first met Lula Mae shed already0 Ii.tI IAnnette Rogers-Rister and husband and bestfriend Rick Rister, on their honeymoonBelow Ch. Majestics Willie B Steppn Upinvested over 25 years of love and labor in breeding and showing Poms. Shes 83 years young now, and our friendship spans 16 years. Lu still breeds her Poms and attends the closer shows, and like the rest of us, when the good ones come along she still gets them in the ring. Most of her Poms go back to Gladlys Schoenbergs Aristic line and she has only outcrossed twice in 39 years of breeding.Although she had no bitches at the time, she advised me to be patient, as the breed periodically tends to produce more dogs than bitches. In the meantime, she taught me traits to look for in choosing apup short back, good tail set, What in Gods name was a tailset, heavy coat, and good earset theres that word again. This advice soon let to the selection of my first bitch - Jolands Micci Mouse. With mostly Aristic behind her, I later bred Micci to Lus Ch. Tobys Little Beau, and this union produced my first show quality litter. I kept one bitch, Beaus Little Peep II, and together we delved into the exciting arena of show dogs. Our first outing took us to a fun match where she earned a Group I at 5 months and she earned it alone, as I was so green that Im sure I didnt help her. Our next endeavor took us to the Strawberry Cluster near Houston, accompanied by my most precious friend and future husband, RickThe Pom Reader May 199626m-1MMPom Breeders know its not always smooth sailingRister. The first day there, eager to better myself, I observed and learned some grooming techniques from Erika and Jennifer Moureau. I watched as Erika sprayed the tail and marveled at how much better the dogs outline looked enhanced the tail set. We won our class that day, but not the points. It was the next day, however, that taught me a lesson Ill never forget.Who can remember the first judges theyve shown under I vividly recall that day I proudly pranced into Mr. Edd E.Bivins ring with Beau Peeps tail freshly sprayed with a newly purchased Cherrybrook product. Mr Bivin went over her with a careful hand. All looked well - until he reached the tail. Him Why is this tail wet Me Because I just sprayed it. Him with a disgusted glare Well, DONT spray itBeau Peep never finished her Championship. My show career paused for several years, as egos heal slowly. I concentrated instead, on learning all aspects for a good breeding program. By the age of three Beau Peep had been bred once to Mrs. Colliers Decoration of My Way, producing Ch. Decorations Tickie Lee later purchased by Dan and Jo Ellen Mercer. The second time she was bred to Colliers Here Come D Judge, producing Ch. D Judges Morning Majic. The combination of theseThe Pom Reader May 1996girls names forms my kennel name Majestic.I began attending shows again at the time Olga and Darrell Bakers beautiful Ch. Jeribeth Sir Lancelot was being campaigned by Judi Hartell, PHA. Lances beauty combined with Judis impeccable grooming created a breathtaking effect. This display of perfection prompted me to contact Judi Hartell and Patsy Wade, requesting they show Majic. Once in their charge, Majic earned her championship in just 2 12 months, followed by Tickie finishing in another quick 2 12 months.Soon after completing her Queen papers, Tickie came into season and I began scouting for a suitable sire. I fell in love with Ch. Southlands Mighty Impressive who was being campaigned by Judi and Patsy in 1991-1 remember watching Mighty and Tickie play in the expen together at a show, and was struck by how similar in type and size they were. Added to this, Mighty" captivated the audience with his dream-like show qualities and beguiling personality. This observation let to a phone call to Mightys human mama, Charlotte Creed, and we soon had a marriage.Waiting on puppies is not my strong suit, so to fill the time I trekked to Pineville, Louisianna, to meet Charlotte in person. I had also hoped to convince her tosell me a show bitch as she requires several referrals and Veterinary references before approving a buyer. And, after observing her Poms, I knew I had to have one, as like Lus, they were some of the most gorgeous I had ever seen. So we stayed up most of the night chatting and getting to know each other - and by the time we went to bed I had a dilemma on my hands...did I want Southlands Sweet and Sassy Mightys full sister, 5 months older or Southlands Madonna a daughter out of Ch.Southlands Ms. Ruth of G.E. x Ch. Southlands Sire ImpressiveTiny, adorable Sassy made the trip home with me. Her purchase not only marked the beginning of a serious and successful breeding program, but more importantly, it commenced a sincere friendship with Charlotte that I will cherish for a lifetime. And the breeding from my Tiki to her Mighty produced me a male and female. They became Ch. Majestics I Be Willie Bad and Ch. Majestics I Be On Parade.Majestic now has a total of 8 Champions in our household, made possible only with the good friendship and guidance of Lu Collier and Charlotte Creed. Unfortunately, we tragically lost Sassy a year ago to a massive pulmonary infarction a blood clot passed from the heart to lungs. Southlands Mighty Impressive Fifty- one days later a huge storm system rolled into Corpus Christi. Having already x-rayed Ruthie, I knew we had a puppy. When she began discharging the dreaded greenstuff, I feared she may lose it as it was too soon. She made it through the night and I came home the next day at lunch to exercise the dogs and check on her. To my dismay, she had a bubble showing, so I arranged for the rest of the day off and stayed with her. Ruthie free-whelped as usual but this time a tiny girl with no hair on her head or legs, and a mouth too small to nurse by herself. I helped her latch on throughout the day, and the next morning I carried her to work with me in a small playmate ice chest equipped with a heating pad ready to plug in. I bottle-fed her during the days and latched her on to Ruthie during the nights, and Im proud to announce our efforts paid off. We now enjoy the healthy company of a 4-pointer MajesticsSouthland Assylee. The other miracle occurred recently. I bred BISS Ch. Majestics Willie B Steppn Up to Ch. Majestics I Be On Parade Steppers aunt, or his fathers littermate. An X-ray of I Be displayed three puppies. I Bes 65th day fell on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 1995, the same day I was scheduled to fly to an Oklahoma City Specialty at noon. I dropped her off at the Vets office on my way to work, than received a call from him at 1 lam. He asked if he should take the puppies as nothing was happening. I replied, Lord yes, theyve cooked long enough. I called back to remind him I Be might require a Tom Cat Catheter, but the assistant informed me the C-section was already complete and the two pups were fine. This stunned me, and I asked what happened to the third one. She didnt know, but congratulated me on my two new girls, whom I took home that afternoon. Needless to say, I missed the Specialty. The Pom Reader May 1996Majestic Poms - conclusionSurprisingly, I Be neglected her babies. Her precious babies were doted on and well attended to, but I found myself having to hold her down and help the girls latch on. I stayed home for three days, then called Joanie, my helper of 11 years, to fill in for me on Friday while I went back to work. Joanie was to stop in at 11 am and 4pm to let the puppies nurse. She reported that I Be wasnt too cooperative, so I told her to be sure and go back at 4pm and I would be home shortly after that. I didnt hear from her at 4, so I figured all was well, but that was not the case. I checked with her at 530 and she said I Be was snapping at her, and the little girl was listless. I literally flew home, driving like a maniac and fearing I would find a dead puppy. But what I found was a THIRD puppy I Be whelped the pup at 430 that afternoon THREE DAYS AFTER HER C- SECTION She looked at me with her proud and grinning face, then introduced me to my first black and tan, a healthy female. I later worried about the A.K.C. regulation, and called. I explained the situation and they instructed me to register her with the first delivery date.I was recounting this tale with Nancy Burnett in the group ring at Pine Bluff, Arkansas shows. She kept repeating That puppy was just meant to be So I christened her Majestics Im Just Meant To Be and credit Nancy with the name.
