I believe that it is not only something that I have grown upwith throughout my life and shared with my family, it is somethingthat is truly engrained deep in my heart. As a child, my brother, sistersand myself have always shared this passion and it was a strong partof what made our family so special. We all spent countless hours withmany different types of pets, caring for and nurturing them. To thisday, it is a bond that has kept us all close and it has become animportant part of our adulthood. My first job was at a pet store. Here, I learned a lot aboutdifferent breeds, how to care for them, and all of the hard work thatgoes into owning and caring for purebred dog. Now that I lookKaceePomeraniansreatback, I realize how funny it is that even then, I was always had a passion for nurturing and caring for the tiny or sick babies. This is something that has stayed with me throughout my life and continues to be deep in my heart. In fact, I recently saved asick little bird Billy Bob when his mother dropped him from the nest in my backyard. Even after he was released into thewild of my backyard the little guy would come back daily for his syringe of puppy food mixture. What a sight it was to see himfollow me around my house from room to room everyday waiting for his mealAfter I graduated from school, I married my husband Mike. Soon, we had three Doberman Pinschers in our house.Mike promised me that we could get as many dogs as I wanted. Ha He had no idea what he was in for.Fast forward to a few years later. Dobies are gone. Poms are in A customer comes into our pet store and shows me apicture of one of the cutest puppies I have ever seen. That same night, we were at their house and saw the litter of Pomeranianpuppies. We bought one of those puppies for our daughter, Darleen, and she named her Cuddles. Of course, Cuddles was nota show quality Pom, but she gave us so much love and joy that she will always have a very special place in my heart. The Yampiro Home Sharon YampiroSharon and Kacee-Ch Great River Kalua N CreamG iverThe Yampiro Family2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 892006, 1135 AM9I I I I I i i i in4i f rA imiSSltiml. 1.\\iv.iUu.4 4vwfW n \xrryV1v, ' \__iMAJORWINNERSiwestchestewKENNEL CLUBs- urt h ttmw to^mmrJ410 - SEPTEMBEROCTOBER 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWA few years later, I was so fortunate to meet a very special and lovelywoman, Anna Liseli of Ann-Jo Poms. She invited me over to her house and I was inawe over her beautiful Poms. I remember to this day the feeling that I had when sheshowed me this gorgeous little guy, AnJo N Merimaurs Absolute Victor. Iimmediately fell in love with Victor and begged Anna to sell him to me. He becamemy first stud dog and to this day, I see his beautiful type come through in my puppiestime and time again.Anna became a very important part of my life as she took me under herwing and became my mentor. She helped me with breeding decisions, educated meon pedigrees, and was always there as a mentor and as a friend. Sadly, my time withher was short lived as she passed away, leaving a very sad Pom world. For me, Annas spirit lives on in my Victor. In my early years as a breeder,he produced some very nice puppies including Ch Great Rivers Harley Davidson,Ch Crestviews Billy The Kid BonR bred by Maureen Greco, Ch TresstiquesGreat Pom Sunday bred by Bonnie Harris, Ch Great Rivers Shel BA Star and ChGreat Rivers Lil Lover Boy , Cupid, who has brought beautiful head type into myline. In my early years as a breeder, my foundation bitch was Merimaurs AnJosDancing Jewel, Gemma, whom I had purchased from Maureen Quinlan ofMerimaur Poms. I feel strongly that Gemma contributed greatly to the soundnessthat I still see in my puppies today. A breeding of Gemma to Ch Great Elms Firestarterproduced a lovely girl, Great Rivers Smokin Serenade. And a breeding of Gemma toCh Angelics Bit O Prid Taner Jo, Tanner, owned by Diana Pollard, produced ChGreat Rivers Lil Postman ROM, Postie, who finished his championship from thepuppy classes with several Best of Breeds and a group placement. Postie producedsome wonderful puppies who went on to become champions, including Ch GreatRivers Swiss Miss, Ch Angelic N Great Rivers Kelsey, Ch Great Rivers HeavenlyDream, and Ch Great Rivers Lil Lord Adonis. In my foundation, I also purchased several lovely bitches from CassandraEvans, including Ch Wee Hearts Pitter Patty, who bred to Tanner produced myspunky Kacee - Ch Great Rivers Kalua N Cream who is a beautiful little blackand tan bitch. And thru Wee Hearts Lilbit Of Honey x Harley, I got Ch GreatRivers Sonshine OKisses, who went on to give me several more champions, includingCH Gar-Vs Irish Cream, Bailey, bred by my good friend Gail Garvey, and CHGreat Rivers Gota B Init T Winit, Winnie. If I had to choose my best breeding to date, however, I would have to say itwould be a breeding that I did several years ago with Cupid and a beautiful littlebitch that I purchased from my friend Karen Hanlon who was bred Tony and Fabian,Ch Starfires Sarina. Out of that litter, I got two beautiful boys, Ch Great RiversPuppet on a String, owned by Angel Arocho, and Ch Great Rivers Cupids Arrow,Beau. Beau is a gorgeous orange sable boy who has it all soundness, structure, type, personality, loads of correct coat and a to-die-for head. To date, Beau hasproduced 4 champions, with several more rapidly approaching their Championships. His puppies are consistently beautiful and typie, and he reproduces himself over andover again in them. I am actually working him to my breeding program for whites, and hoping to bring his typiness into my many other colors. In the past couple of years, I have become very focused on my blacks, partis and whites. I have had two wonderful black Champions, Ch Ti Amo N GreatRivers Liberty,Libby, and her daughter, CH Great Rivers Little Rascal,Darla. My first white champion, CH Great Rivers White Lace, Lacey is abeautiful bitch who has become an invaluable asset to my whites breeding program. And my first parti Champion, CH Great Rivers Aint No Paint, PJ, has alreadyproduced his first parti champion son, CH Great Rivers TB or Not TB Kisses,Tobe. Beyond this areais an acre of grassy, fenced yard, which Ilet the dogs romp in when I am able towatch them closely. It is my little oasis inour Long Island neighborhood and I oftenaffectionately refer to it as Fort Knox.Play, frolicking and healthy exercise isencouraged and I rarely kennel. As I mentioned earlier, I have ahuge interest in health issues and try veryhard to avoid them. As we know, it isvirtually impossible to avoid everythingall of the time, but it is a major prioritywhen I choose my breedings. It reallybreaks my heart to see sick puppies, andI will try everything I can to avoid that.Fortunately, in the past several years, Ihave become pretty knowledgable on howto save puppies and care for sick ones, and I try to help my friends out as muchas possible when they have sick babies even if it means phone calls in the middleof the night, or going with them to thevets to help save a baby. One issue that I have beenworking very hard to avoid is black skindisease and coat problems. Of course, Ihave had it in quite a few of my pastbreedings, however, I work very hard toavoid it and now I rarely see a dog with acoat problem in my line. I firmly believethat through research and smart breeding,we can avoid it a lot of the time and gethealthier dogs. Beautiful coats are apassion of mine, and I work hard tomaintain healthy, lush and correct coats. One thing that Ive found is that judgesare so used to seeing cute, fluffy puppieswith lots of coat, that they aredisregarding the puppies that are goingthrough a normal shed. I truly hope thatthrough education these judgesunderstand the long-term issues of whatthey are rewarding, and begin tounderstand the breed and its normalmaturity cycle. It breaks my heart forthese dogs, who become champions soearly on, and then go on to develop otherCh. I also will comment on some other important things concerning our National Specialty in Louisville, March 2007.I was to fly American Airlines out of Green Bay to Chicago OHare airport, change planes and fly into Orlando.Sorry to say Chicago is not my favorite airport to use, but AA was the least expensive tickets I could find. I was notallowed to use my free flyer miles because the timing was too close to a holiday July 4th.It seems that the Chicago air traffic was not moving because of inclement weather so the AA personnel were tryingto find another city for me to fly into from Green Bay for my change of planes. North West Airlines was booked full. I said,How about the Milwaukee airport Mid West The Best Care in the Air Airlines hub is in Milwaukee. They had roomand would book me all the way to Orlando. When I got to Milwaukee I was paged over the intercom and told which gate I was to go to. When I got to the desk, the gate door was opened for me. I was escorted into this HUGE plane, which much to my surprise, was devoid ofpassengers EXCEPT an extra traveling pilot and one other passenger I was told this was a rescue plane they weresending to Orlando to replace a plane that needed repairs. TALK ABOUT ROYAL TREATMENT The stewards andstewardesses were all there as if there was a full plane. We were served our drinks and their specialty on everyflightwarm freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and an extra bag of cookiesto go We could change seats at will, lookout of any window we chose, just like a kid in a candy store That was a first for me and a flight I will remember the restof my lifeNow for a reminder The APC March 2007 National Specialty will again be in Louisville, KY. I am the TrophyChairman and will be asking your help in sponsoring the trophies for our National. These trophies will give you moreBANG for your BUCK These are all USEFUL trophies and are here waiting for your donation. By HERE, I mean at thehouses of Nadine Hersil, Cudahy, WI and Margaret McKee, Goochland, VA who so graciously drove me to my winter homein Florida, while we were there for the Summer Specialty, to pick up all of the March 07 trophies. They took them to theirhomes and will drive them to the March 07 Specialty, thus solving my problem of how I was going to get them there. I amflying from Florida. They saved the club the shipping costs. THANK YOU Margaret and NadineThe APC Orlando Summer Specialty was a disappointment in numbers of entries, but the QUALITY of theseentries made up for the small number. Bobii Earle worked very hard to make this a quality show. Wendy Donnelly,Alpharetta, GA and I were ring stewards. Thanks Wendy for helping me steward. The show was held at the Airport MarriotHotel. The show room was huge and AIR CONDITIONED We had several separate grooming rooms that were shared byPeke and Yorkie specialties on Thursday andor Friday. The hospitality room was available at all hours for snacks andsodas.I was going to bring my swimming suit no pictures please, but I forgot to pack it. I missed out on a hugediscreetly fenced-in, landscaped indooroutdoor pool that was next to a man-made lake with a sign from the DNR thatreminded us that it was against the law to feed the alligators I never saw an alligator all the while we were there, but Icould see that whole view from my hotel roomgorgeousThe hotel personnel was very accommodating. There was a hotel shuttle to and from the airport. Those of you whothought Florida was too hot for dog shows in the summer were WRONG and missed out on a wonderful experience. TheFlorida summer dog shows are air-conditioned. I have to tell youthis was my first experience being in Florida in thesummer. Some exhibitors had a chance to visit the many Disney attractions in Orlando. It was a wonderful experienceThanks Bobii and thanks to the exhibitors who entered their Poms. California was the farthest distance someexhibitors came to show their Poms. Others traveled from Texas, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Virginia, and of course, Florida. Abig, Thank you. goes to those who came to show their beautiful Poms in beautiful Orlando. The APC Orlando Summer Specialty results follow. Just like clothes closets theycontained things that were no longer appropriate, and others that needed a little work tomake them useful, and others that were, of course, just fine as they were. Work on the National for March 2007 isunderway. And plans are just at their infancy toward producing a Review Anniversary issue in 2008.I am proud to report that thanks to your generosity in fund raising, the Pomeranian Charitable Trust hasbeen able to contribute two major donations through the AKC-Canine Health Foundation. Both were regardingresearch concerning Alopecia X.In February our 2,500.00 check went to help support a grant to Dr. Linda Franks study at the Universityof Tennessee. Her clinical study is officially titled Estrogen Receptor Antagonist and Hair Regrowth in Dogs withFollicular Arrest Alopecia X. As you might recall this is a continuation from her study relating the use of Melatoninto Alopecia X dogs. We are very fortunate to have a researcher of her caliber and conscientiousness interested inworking on our alopecia problem.Dr. Franks summary of the current proposed research is as follows Follicular arrest also know as AlopeciaX, adrenal hyperplasia-like syndrome, growth hormone responsive alopecia, and others is a common condition seenin Pomeranians and other plush-coated breeds. While systemic illness in not associated with this disease, the lossof hair is dramatic and of concern to the owner. The pathomechanism of the hair loss is not known, but appears to berelated to an abnormality in the hair follicles ability to cycle properly. Once the hair is in telogen or resting phase ofthe hair cycle, new hair growth does not occur. Recently there has been the recognition of an estrogen receptorpathway that appears to regulate the transition of the hair from resting to active growth. We hypothesize that dogswith follicular arrest have increased activity of estrogen receptors in hair follicles preventing the hair follicles fromcycling normal. A potent estrogen receptor blocker has been developed for treating women with breast cancer. It hasbeen extensively tested in dogs and has no side effects except for those related to anti-estrogen activity such asreduction in fertility. Therefore, we would like to test the ability of this drug to cause hair regrowth in Pomeraniandogs with follicular arrest. This will be a pilot study in which 5 dogs with alopecia will receive an intramuscularinjection of the active drug monthly for 2 months and 5 will receive placebo. The dogs will be evaluated for hairregrowth in 1-month intervals. If hair regrowth occurs, the dogs, which received placebo, will be offered the activedrug. CBC, chemistry panel, and urinalysis will be monitored prior to receiving the first injection, and monthly for2 months. In June, the PCT sent in its allocated portion of 3,150.00 toward a six-month grant to Dr. Tosso Leeb at theUniversity of Berne, Switzerland. The same amount will hopefully be donated from the Keeshond Foundation. Andthe CHF will match both for a total of 12,600.00. The title of this study is Investigation of the Canine CathepsinL Gene CTSL as a Candidate for Alpecia X in Keeshonden and Pomeranians. Its Lay Abstract Alopecia Xoccurs in several arctic breeds with plush undercoat such as the Keeshond, Pomeranian, Samojede, Chow-chow, andAlaskan Malamute. It is characterized by hair loss and dark coloration of the affected skin areas. The diseasetypically starts at 1-5 years of age and predominantly affects the rump of the animals. Alopecia X has also beentermed growth hormone-responsive alopecia and black skin disease. Although many experts believe in a geneticcause for Alopecia X, the exact mode of inheritance is still under discussion. The primary aim of this study is tocollect a suitable sample collection for genetic analyses. During the project DNA samples from healthy and affectedKeeshonden and Pomeranians will be collected. Pedigree analysis of these dogs will allow the determination of the2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 8102006, 1044 PM3244 4a\ 'ijWnHW 99s...TT vpi 3f M to V I"vl4i i i i nSEPTEMBEROCTOBER 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 33mode of inheritance. The second aim of this study concerns the investigation of the cathepsin L gene CTSL in theacquired samples. Mutations in this gene cause hair loss in the so-called furless mouse mutant and therefore it seemspossible that analogous mutations in the dog CTSL gene might be responsible for Alopecia X. The DNA sequencingof this gene in healthy and affected dogs might reveal the genetic cause for the disease. This would allow thedevelopment of a genetic test to detect carriers of the disease.Dr. Leeb has mentioned that the cooperation of the European Keeshond and Pomeranian breeders areproviding him a fair number of DNA samples along with their pedigrees. However, it would be very helpful tocompare those to 2 or 3 families from the US or Canada. At this publishing date, I have secured one family. If youare able to help out this study, you can look up how to do so at httpwww.genetics.unibe.chcontentrubrikalopecia_xindex_eng.htmlAnother financial commitment that the PCT has made each year is toward education. In cooperation withthe APC, an educational seminar is provided during the National in Kentucky. On Tuesday, March 13, 2007, Dr.Frank will present Hair today, Gone tomorrow. This will provide a wonderful opportunity to ask your questionsdirectly.Although the PCT has not contributed financially this year to Dr. Gary Johnsons work at the University ofMissouri, we still endorse his research. We thank you all who have sent in DNA samples to it. Alopecia X has beenso complex and illusive to finding scientific answers. The more people in the research community that are interestedin this problem, the more likely we will get to a complete understanding. We all would like to hear feedback from anyone working on this problem. Unfortunately that is also aworthwhile goal that is difficult to achieve. It would help donors stay committed to helping out. This has been amajor concern of mine for some time. I even used one conference in which I was invited to participate at theUniversity of California, Davis, to make an impassioned plea to the research community present. I fear that mypassionate plea was labeled as the lunatic fringe.Communication is a difficult concept for researchers to grasp. Even the researchers within one center donot communicate what they are working on among themselves. Not until they get their results published, do they feelsecure in doing this. Collaboration is not a well-used concept. By nature, researchers are often skeptics. And theyfear a reputation of failure. While I attempted to tell them that even hearing that a hypothesis turned out to be nottrue, tells us what our problem is probably not. They are trained to avoid probably nots. However in the realmof such an allusion problem such as our alopecia, that in itself is important. Researchers tend to internally feel likea failure at this intermediate stage of study. One researcher that is an exception to the above description is Dr.Frank. I find her very forthcoming. And from my more recent communications, so far Dr. Tosso Leeb Switzerlandis also. I consider it my duty to continually try to bridge the gap between dog fanciers and research communities. Ido this by creating a mutual trust relationship that fosters open communication. Both of these groups need funding, effort, and patience to solve any problem.Another observation that I will share with our donors is that it takes a long time for grants to come about. However, when they finally do, the money must be provided quickly or the grants fall through. Researchers areforced to turn their attention elsewhere. There are so very many problems that should be studied. We were veryfortunate this year that we had the funds in our war chest to respond when needed. But did you notice the grant toDr. Leeb is for only six months It is unrealistic to think the end result will be found in six months time. So we needto be ready to renew this grant, and likewise with Dr. Franks clinical study. One small step of knowledge mightprovide a puzzle piece to understanding Alopecia X. But it certainly wont provide us sight of the whole picture. To assist us in thanking our donors, provide current information on the research, and receive donations, thePCT trustees have been trying to get a web site up. Hopefully you will be able to see these results about the time thisarticle is in your hands.I am pleased that the Review is able to present information about the Hadleigh lines under both Mrs. Dykesand Mr. Igarashis care. Their love and knowledge create an unprecedented dynasty spanning continents. And before I close, I will share one of my regrets. Is thereanything I can doFor severe motion sickness problems, a drug such as Dramamine can be used under the supervision of yourveterinarian. I prefer to first try the following natural methods to help1 Accustom your dog to your car to avoid anxiety induced vomiting. a Several times before your planned road trip, play with and offer treats to your Pom in your running, but notmoving car. b Go on several short trips e.g., around the block before you attempt a longer trip. Make the trip a positiveexperience with praise and a small treat. c If you plan to use a crate, make sure your Pom is accustomed to it in advance. Unless you have an air bag, place the crate in the front seat with adequate ventilation.2 Except for small treats, avoid feeding your dog a meal within 3 hours of travel.3 Fifteen minutes before traveling, give your dog a small slice of fresh peeled ginger root wrapped in a piece ofcanned food, meat, or cheese. Choose a treat that your dog particularly likes to hide the taste of the ginger root.Fresh ginger will stay good in the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator for weeks. A ginger capsule or pinch ofpowdered ginger can be used if you do not have fresh ginger on hand.4 Give a pet supplement that includes B vitamins each day on travel days, give the supplement at least one hourin advance.5 Place 2-3 drops of Peppermint and Lavender essential oils on a paper under your dogs crate pad. These oilshave calming and anti-nausea properties.6 Take a fecal sample to your vet to make sure your Pom is parasite free. What can I doEditors comments Before leaving on a cruise in the Pacific, I happened to watch Mythbusters on theDiscovery Channel. The subject was What prevents motion sickness, what actually works and what is a myth.Mythbusters Adam and Jamie proved, other than costly prescription medicines which caused intensedrowsiness, ginger was the only product that worked successfully. So before leaving on the trip, I purchased ginger capsules and a bag of ginger snaps the bag touted, TripleGinger. Our cruise was unseasonably rough. Many in our group had prescription seasick patches, others tookDramamine and slept a lot, and others were sick. By taking ginger, I did not get seasick once And thanks tothe Goddesses Pele and ginger I even enjoyed a helicopter flight over Kilaueas lava flow. Many have said, Give your Pom half a ginger snap before traveling to prevent car sickness. The woman washaving to move and she and her young son would not be able to keep the dog. After a few conversations, we learned she had been unable to afford anyvaccinations or other vet services. She stated, The dog is in great health buthas fleas. I instructed her to give the dog a flea bath and to meet me thefollowing day to surrender the dog. When little Precious arrived, her ears were heavy with mites andfleas still noticeably crawling on her. The young boy was covered with whatappeared to be flea bites, too. A seemingly disheveled Mom, was in tears asshe wished Precious well, and apologized for her lack of care. I assured thewoman we would get Precious the care she needed. Precious has recently been losing weight and the heat wore her out, stated thewoman. After her initial vet examination it was determined Precious had flea anemia, was heartworm HW positive, had openinfected sores from the fleas, and had recently been in season. We began the treatments recommended by the vet. After her grooming, spay and first HW treatment, she was placed with a lovely couple whom had volunteered their time to foster Precious. Precious wasto have a second HW treatment one month after the first. She needed to be socialized and nurtured during the interim.Tom and Connie live on a relaxing lake. Having recently lost their beloved Poms age related illnesses, they were unsure offostering, but felt it might fill some of the loneliness. We received this update less than one week after Precious was placed with Tomand Connie.Well, we have been shopping for clothes and Precious now is the owner of a bright red halter-top When asked to go out, shebarks and twirls around. She and Connie have gone for short walks, and she has met some of the neighborhood. She traveled just fineand is adjusting nicely. She greets me when I return to the house with a bark and a wagging tail and then she is quiet. She is a verynice little dog. They also included this photo of Precious enjoying the sun and water in her new red halter-topUPDATE 7-3-06 This Precious Pom has a forever familyA lovely family, whom had heard about Precious and her foster family through a mutual friend, contacted PCCI Rescue.A PreciousRescuePrecious in her new red halter-topAdoption applications and home visits were nothing new tothis crew, as they have adopted two beautiful children fromChina. After their two birth children were on their feet andbecoming more independent, these two committed peoplechose adoption to add to the family. They currently havefour children and a fifth child will arrive next year, alsofrom China. It seemed perfectly reasonable when they chosea beloved pet for their own, that she too would be a rescue.Precious is kind, loving and very adoring of thechildren, who through life experience have also learned tobe sensitive and gentle. We are thankful to the Perrys for reaching out, andwelcoming Precious into their family.2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 892006, 1141 AM36I I I I I i i i in4,4.t1 f - TuM4 4 f iTfJ-.i3ft4SEPTEMBEROCTOBER 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 37From the time I was a little girl, I loved animals especially horses and dogs. But, because I grew up in anapartment in New York, my menagerie was limited tocats and birds. When it came to dogs and horses, I had tobe content with painting them, and I did so with a passionfrom a very early age.Our kennel, Shamrock Shelties, is a small hobby kennelin Maine. We currently have seven dogs and because myinterest lies more in painting dogs than breeding them, wehave very few litters. We have finished four Sheltiechampions since beginning our breeding program and wecontinue to show today. When I first became interested in showing and breedingShelties, I hit the books in an effort to educate myselfabout the breed I had come to love. This meant studyingeverything I could find, including beautiful photographsof the breeds greats. I couldnt resist drawing thesedogs, and I began bringing these drawings to my first show outings. Before long, other breeders and exhibitors began commissioningme to do portraits of their dogs. For the past 20 years I have been involved in dogs, I have delighted in the many beautiful subjects I havebeen given the opportunity to capture in pen and ink drawings, pastels, oils, and watercolors on wooden kennel signs.Although I do all breeds of dogs and most animals, Shelties have been my most favorite subject, however that is until I discovered theadorable Pomeranian breed. My first Pom painting was commissioned by my good friend Jan Stachurski of Tabletop Poms. We firstmet Jan through our involvement in breedingexhibiting Type Canaries many years ago. It was a pastel painting of his beautiful parti2007 APC LOGO ARTISTCH Ursa Minors Touch of Class. Years later I was asked to dologos for Picket Poms Anastasia Sowers and DreamWeaverPoms Linda Pelz and I was on my way. Jan, Anastasia andLinda helped me develop a sense of breed type and with theirhelp I was able to fine-tune and put emphasis on the details thatbring the total desired-look together. Through a lot of carefulresearch and with each new commission I was able to get a betterfeel for what I wanted to achieve in each new painting and at thesame time found myself falling in love with the breed.Consequently we were able to procure our first little Pom puppyHollilys Aristocrat, Ari this summer through the generosityof Christine Creasey, Hollily Poms. Ari pictured above issuch a cute little model and is fast becoming my inspiration forfuture Pom paintings. I guess you could say Ive come fullcircle as Ari is a descendant of Jans Touch, the subject of myfirst Pom paintingTo date I have designed two logos for the American ShetlandSheepdog National Annual Specialties - one in 1995, held inMarlborough, Massachusetts, and hosted by the WesternMassachusetts Shetland Sheepdog Club and my most recentcommission is a logo for the 2007 National being hosted by thePacific Northwest Shetland Sheepdog Club in Washington State. In addition, I have been honored that the American PomeranianClub chose my artwork to be the logo for their 2007 National tobe held in Kentucky. It will remain, in record and in memory, for about as longas anything in this world can remain. Few humans will do as well or better in that regard. And though the dog itself doesnt know or care that its achievements have been noted, a title says many things in the worldof humans, where such things count.A title says your dog was intelligent, and adaptable, and good-natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do thethings that please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed. And a title says that you loved your dog, that you loved to spend time with it because it was a good dog, that you believedin it enough to give it yet another chance when it failed, and that, in the end, your faith was justified.A title proves that your dog inspired you to that special relationship enjoyed by so few that in a world of disposablecreatures, this dog with a title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in return. And when that dear, short life is over, the title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deservingfriend, volumes of praise in one small set of initials after the name.A title is nothing less than love and respect, given and received and permanently recorded.Submitted by Sally BaugnietWhat is a Title, reallyBy Sandy Mowery2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 892006, 1142 AM41I I I I I i i m i nf'it- aV6VI4 4442 - SEPTEMBEROCTOBER 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWPictured is AmBIS Can Ch. So,get ready to find out about some DEEP DARK SECRETSQuestion 1 WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST SHORTESTOR MOST WEIRD JOB YOU EVER HADMy first ever job was a governess to a well-knownpsychologists child. I lasted only two weeks in this wealthy shoremansion. The psychologist wanted his child raised without everhearing the word No. Absolutely no type of discipline was everadministered. A world without any discipline meant hot food couldbe pulled from the stovewithout any reaction. He was to learnby experience what hot meant. I was constantly explaining toinnocent by-standers why he would throw sand or kick or hit withouta reaction from me. I understand he had previously flushed theirChihuahua down the toilet. As a young teenager and with nopsychology degree I quickly learned between dodging of thrownobjects this child was desperately crying out for attention he neverreceived. He WANTED parameters. He behaved far worse that mysubject for the next question. Finally pushed beyond my limitIfinally bit this creature BACKand called my parents to comepick me up. I wonder how this mans experiment ended.Another funny employment memory that I have, dates backto college summers. Since the time I was in high school, I hadalways earned money giving private piano lessons. But one summerI wanted to try something else. My real job was working througha temporary secretary service. On one particular job, I was totranscribe type a mans unpublished new book. It was on a newphysics theory. This man hired a typist. He was unaware that I wasmajoring in math with a heavy physics background. So, you canimagine the shocked look on his face when I casually mentioned Icorrected two of his differential calculus equations in his proof.Marge Kranzsfelder, APC PresidentWhen the children were little, I tried to make do with parttimejobs. I did a lot of market research, mostly calling people onthe phone and asking their opinions. One survey wanted to find outif the public would like and use cell phones That was back in the70s. Another wanted to see if housewives would accept saladdressing sold in plastic bottles. The worst assignment was goingdoor-to-door, trying to get people to answer a bunch of questions.Only if they answered correctly was I to give them a six-pack ofbeer, for taste testing, with the promise of more to come. Ugh, itwas awfulMargaret McKee, APC Second Vice-PresidentMy first job was working for my dad in his sporting goodsstore in Salzburg, Austria. I learned how to make flies for fishinglures, and how to wax skis. I also learned how to repair fishing rodsand how to attach rings to rods.Erika Moureau, APC TreasurerI guess the weirdest job would be one I had during one ofmy college breaks and it was weird because of the lack of concerntoward the employees. I was receptionist for a messenger company. One of the messengers was hit by a car and called in. I was franticand the only thing the dispatcher wanted to know was if he couldmake his delivery. Needless to say, that job did not even last the 3months of summer vacation.Alane Levinsohn, Board MemberMy first job was when I was a sophomore in High School. I washeddishes at a nursing home. This was when I was about12 yearsold.I also worked for my dad in his Plastics business until hefired me We were painting and assembling some clowns that dancedto music on a vibrating-induced pedestal. This is hard to explain, but he had a 4-foot wire clothes line-type thing-a-ma-jiggy set on atable. I was to dip some parts in paint and hang them on this wireclothesline. When I had the line about half full they would all falloff when I tried putting another one on and I had to start all overagain. It was so frustrating. My dad wouldnt believe me when Itold him what was happening and thought I was goofing off. Hefired me on the spot. I cried all the way home when a neighbor thatworked there too, drove me home. I never worked for my dad again, but he found out what I told him was the truth, as the same thinghappened when he tried it himself Would he apologize I dontremember that he did, because he would never admit he was wrong. He was a good dad other than thatThese were not weird jobs at the time, but have sincedisappeared from modern day life. To help pay for my collegeeducation, I was a carhop at a custard stand in the summer daytime. At night I worked in the food stand at the Victory Drive-in Theatre, popping popcorn, waiting on customers during intermission, cleaningup, counting popcorn boxes, soda cups, hamburger and hot dogbuns after intermission. Counting soda cups and buns is how theboss kept track of how many boxes of popcorn, cups of sodas, hamburgers, and hotdogs were sold. The numbers had to correspondto the money taken in. The employees brought their own cup fortheir soda, their own dish for their popcorn and ate the hamburgerand hotdog meat without the bun THAT never affected the count. One summer between my Junior and senior year I wastaking a Trees and Shrubs course at Wisconsin State Collegenow University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. We were smoking inthe kitchen waiting for the intermission rush. I told them I had ahard time remembering the Latin name for the Ash tree, which wasFraxinus. From then on when they wanted the ashtray, they wouldsay, Pass the Fraxinus tray. I passed my test with flying colorsPS I quit smoking in the 70s. Chico was a fascinating pet, but one that I readilybelieve the general public shouldnt venture into. Years later a mansomehow heard about me and sought me out. His job required himto leave this country and he wanted me to care for his belovedmonkey, Soggi. This loving guy visited my childrens classrooms. When I taught high school math, his trips to my classroom providedbehavior modification incentives to my students.Marge Kranzsfelder, APC PresidentI havent really had strange or weird jobs. But I did keepweird pets. My favorite was a lizard that I kept loose in my roomand it kept the bug population down to a slow crawl. I had him orher for about two years. When I would practice my piano lessons shewould jump onto the piano bench and pound the keys of our grandpiano right along with me. Sounded better than my version attimes, or so my little brother told me. I would have her climb ontop of the picnic table and have her stay. I would then go inside tohave dinner or what ever and she never got down from that tableuntil I came for her. She was my friend and confidant for 14 years.Donna Riehm, Board MemberI wasnt allowed to have a pet as a child.Jackie Rayner, Board MemberMy first pet was a black mix dog named Skipper. Iremember him only through pictures. We had tropical livebearingfish in a fish tank. The tank was partially covered, butone day a fish jumped out from the uncovered part and landedon the floor. I was about 5-6 years old. I knew that the fishbelonged in the tank. I tried picking it up, but it was so slipperythat it kept wiggling and popping out of my fingers, so I steppedon it, THEN picked it up and put it back into the tank Mymother couldnt imagine how that flattened, dead fish floatingin the tank got there, until she asked me and I told her.Sally Baugniet, Board Member2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 892006, 1142 AM45I I I I I i i i in44 4446 - SEPTEMBEROCTOBER 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWRagdoll Poms PresentsGlen Iris Mark of ZorroCh. This event had avery strong impact on the directionof Japanese Pomeranians future.Under JKC dog show rules, thePomeranian was a member of theToy Group. However, under theFCI, Pomeranians were moved tothe Spitz Group, which includesbreeds such as the AlaskanMalamute, Siberian Husky, andother large, Nordic breeds. Imagineif you can, being in groupcompetition with your little fourpound Pomeranian trying to keeppace with these larger breeds. To becompetitive among these powerfulmoving animals, a Pomeraniancannot be just pretty it must alsohave superb movement and stamina.Of course, if a Pomeranian cannotbe competitive in the group, there isno way to progress to the Best inShow competition.Move or LoseTo assure a positive futurefor Pomeranians under FCI dogshow rules, it became imperative forJapanese Pomeranian breeders togain a clear understanding of therelationship between bone structureand movement. It became necessary for meto add strong, athletic movement toTypical Hadleigh PuppyJapanese Ch. Thefront and rear legs can only extendto the limit that the angulations willpermit shown by the line drawnfrom the shoulder to the ground. Also, Pom B may appear shorter inbody length, but it would be incorrectto assume he has a short back andhence correct angulations simplybecause he is shorter in body length. When these two Pomeranians walk thesame distancePom A, with a longer reach and drive, can travel that distance with manyfewer steps compared to Pom B. Thischaracteristic makes the dogsmovement more efficient as he willachieve maximum distance coveredwith a minimum of effort. It also givesthe appearance of effortless, yetpowerful and graceful, movement.Pom B, on the other hand, has shorterreach and drive. He will need to takemany more steps to cover the samedistance and to cover that distance andkeep up with other dogs with goodreach and drive, he will have to takemany more steps and move his legsfaster than Pom A. This gives theappearance of a dog going nowhereand his movement looks busy and stiff. When one considers structure andmovement, one has to also considerwhere Poms come from historicallybred down in size from larger sizeddogs. It is important to observe andunderstand the movement andstructure of the other Nordic breeds inorder to know what the correctmovement and structure of the Pomshould be.Japanese BIS and BISS Ch. DamascusbcmIts never too late And yon really are never too old Just ask Emily who JEmily is our foundation bitch, the Granddam of Damascusroad and my heartbeat She has slept on my pillow since she was eight weeks old. Emily should have been finished long ago, but I just never got around to her.Bom in July 1993, Emily came from my first surviving litter I'd had a litter the year before that didn't make it. At that time, I was fairly new to the show world had bought a male I was specialing around the time I would have been showing her Emily was being bred so was often out of coat it was just never her turn I showed her once in 1996 at a Toy Specialty where she won Best of Winners.Earlier this year I lost the two little girls I planned to show so thought I would take Emily out for a bit of fun and to help make up some competition for an exhibitor friend. Emily's in good shape for an old girl, has perfect knees and loves to be on the go But she hadn't been on a lead for ten years, so my only hope was that she would not be excused. 4Well, imagine my surprise when she showed like a dream and moved like a two year old according to one judge who put her up, and lots of spectators. Everyone was amazed, especially me She looked like an old pro in the ring. She won the breed that very first show even though she wasn't great on the table, however, the judge managed to look at her bite yes she still has most of her teeth LOL and go over her. That was a Toy Breeder judge, the first of four that put her up Well, then I thought. . . geez, I wonder if I can finish her. So over the next month we worked on the table a bit. I didn't push her, just coaxed her along. The next show Toy Specialty she did much better on the table and Shirley Limoges who has judged at Westminster gave her BOB. And the rest, as they say, is history. Emily finished with four BOB wins and a Group 4 under Toy Breeder Judges John C. Ross Shirley Limoges Maid Puterman and Hans Brunotte who placed her in his Group.Tpictured two days after she finished her championship with a Best of Breed and Group 4 under Judge Hans BrunotteI 114 Lkii\yEmily is first in what will soon be a line of four generations of Champion bitches. Before you have a chance toreact, the incident is over. He remains lethargic and weak for a whileafterwards. What happenedSeizures, epilepsy, fits, convulsions, all different terms referring to thesame condition.A seizure results from sudden uncontrolled abnormal firing of neurons in the brain. The brain exists in a delicatestate of chemical and physical balance. This balance can be upset by a number of factors. If the balance in thebrain shifts too far, brain cells neurons may become over stimulated, and a seizure may result. This point atwhich seizures occur is known as the seizure threshold.Seizures are commonly preceded by an aura or altered state which may be characterized by restlessness, nervousness, salivation, and anxiety. The ictus or actual seizure follows next. The dog will becomenonresponsive, collapse, and experience involuntary motor movements such as stretching, kicking, or paddling. The motions may vary in intensity from mild tremors to severe jerking movements. Seizures place tremendousstress on the heart, lungs and circulation. The body temperature may get very high from all the muscle activity, and the animal may not breathe adequately. This may result in rare cases in brain damage and death. The actualseizure itself may last only seconds or minutes. A seizure persisting more than a few minutes is anEMERGENCY, which requires immediate treatment by the closest veterinary facility. The postictal stage is theperiod of time after the seizure the dog may remain lethargic and weak, and possibly disoriented. To be considered a true seizure, there must be an alteration in the level of consciousness. If the dog is conscious, responsive, aware of his surroundings, or is awakened easily from a sleep state, he is not having a true seizure.Heart and lung problems can sometimes result in weakness and collapse, and middle ear infections can causedizziness. Twitching and jerking motions may occur in a sleep state, and this is considered normal in earlyneurological development of puppies. There can also be focal or partial seizures, which affect a certain part of the body. For instance, the face or justone limb may be involved. This may progress to involve the entire body. The fact that the seizure starts in a localarea suggests that a specific area in the brain is damaged, perhaps due to a brain tumor or infection.Seizures are a sign of irritation of the brain tissue, just as a coughing is a sign of irritation of the respiratory tract.Any of the factors listed below can trigger uncontrolled firing of the neurons of the brain. When a seizure is the2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 892006, 1147 AM65I I I I I i i i in4Ilia' rmi,I"II4 4466 - SEPTEMBEROCTOBER 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWresult of an identifiable cause, the disorder is known as symptomatic or secondary epilepsy. Seizures may becaused by any of the followingBrain tumor-more common in dogs over 5 years old.Head injuryStroke-can be caused either by bleeding in the brain or bydeficiency of the blood flow to the brain tissue. Eithercondition can be associated with seizures.Hypoglycemia or low blood glucose sugar-common in toy breeds and especially puppies. Rubbing a smallamount of sugar or syrup on the lips, gums and tongue may be effective in stopping the seizure if caused by lowblood sugar.Hypoxemia - Low blood oxygen, with resultant lack of oxygen available to the brain. This can be due to poorlung function, or an abnormal cardiac or pulmonary shunting process in a youngster.Elevated blood ammonia level due to liver infection, cirrhosis or a liver shunt.Inflammatory or infectious disease of the nervous system. This can include Lyme disease, distemper, rabies, toxoplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, encephalitis and meningitis.Ingestion of toxins such as lead, caffeine, chocolateBotulism-toxins sometimes produced by a bacteria in food.Exposure to pesticides such as organophosphates many flea control products and metaldehyde snail baitCongenital problems, such as hydrocephalus, which produce increased intracranial pressure.Intestinal parasites, which can cause severe anemia and hypoglycemia. Some parasites also migrate to the liverand brain in their larval forms.Low serum calcium or magnesium levels- for example, eclampsia in a lactating bitch.Blood sodium or potassium imbalances. This can be caused by dehydration or kidney problems.Genetic predisposition as in the MDR-1 mutation common to many herding breeds. This mutation causes a lackof the protein which exerts a protective function in the blood-brain barrier and limits the entry of many drugs tothe central nervous system. The lack of this protein renders the dog susceptible to the neurotoxic side effects ofseveral drugs including Ivermectin, Moxidectin and Loperamide.Kidney failure and high levels in the blood of uremic toxinsHyperthermia as a result of fever or heat strokeThyroid hormone deficiency or hyperactive thyroid.Seizures are a common disorder in dogs. When tests are done and no reason can be found for the seizure, thedisorder is referred to as idiopathic epilepsy. The term idiopathic means that there is no cause for theproblem, and that the seizures are not the result of another disease process. This is the type of epilepsy which isusually considered to have an inherited basis.Idiopathic epilepsy is the most common canine seizure disorder, occurring in up to nearly 6 of all dogs. Theproblem is more prevalent in some breeds than others. There is a suspected genetic basis for idiopathic epilepsyin German Shepherds, Belgian Tervurens, Keeshonden, Beagles, Dachshunds, Pugs, Poodles, St. Bernards, Irishsetters, Siberian Huskies, Cocker Spaniels, Wire-Haired Fox Terriers, Labrador and Golden Retrievers, andAustralian Shepherds. In breeds which are genetically predisposed, up to 14 of the population may developepilepsy. As epilepsy has been shown to be an inherited disorder in humans, baboons, mice, rats, rabbits, gerbils, and chickens, it seems logical that is can be an inherited disorder in dogs as well. Test breeding of epileptic damsand sires done by veterinary researchers have produced incidences of epilepsy in the offspring ranging frombetween 38 affected to nonaffected to 100 breeding together of two affected dogs.Hereditary epilepsy commonly begins between the ages of 1-3 years. Seizures which begin earlier or later in thedogs life most probably are a result of a disease process such as those listed above. Your vet will likely want torule out these conditions before deciding that your dog has hereditary epilepsy.2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 892006, 1148 AM66I I I I I i i i in44 44SEPTEMBEROCTOBER 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 67If your dog has a seizure, dont panic. Check the clock and make a note of how many seconds or minutes theseizure activity lasts. Keep your dog in a safe environment until the seizure is over. Note what type of abnormalmuscular activity happens, so you can describe it for your vet. Do not put anything in your dogs mouth. Remainby your dog to comfort him. Call your vet for further advice. If the seizure lasts more than a few minutes, takeyour dog to the closest veterinary facility for immediate care. If your dog has recurrent seizures more than oncein 24 hours, again, seek immediate medical assistance.Determining the cause is essential for making appropriate treatment choices, and to assist in breeding decisions. You should seek the advice of your veterinarian. Your vet will obtain a medical history, and a full exam includinga neurologic exam. He will do blood tests, a urinalysis and fecal exam to look for any possible cause for theseizures. Other exams may include x-ray or ultrasound of the abdomen, EEG to evaluate brain waves, skull x-rayor head MRI, and a cerebrospinal fluid analysis if infection is suspected. Treatment will depend upon the cause ofthe seizure. In the case of idiopathic epilepsy, if your dog experiences seizures more frequently than once a month, your vetmay decide to place your dog on seizure medication. Antiepileptic drugs do not cure epilepsy, they simply controlthe seizures. Life-long therapy may be expected. The drugs increase inhibition in the brain, decrease the seizurethreshold, and thus make seizures less likely. This often results in side effects such as sedation, uncoordination ofmovements and appetite stimulation. These effects lessen with time as the body becomes habituated to themedication. The number of dogs who have serious side effects from the medication is small, and oftenpreventable through careful health monitoring. Regular rechecks are essential, and a thorough physical should bedone at least yearly.Phenobarbital and Primidone Mysoline are considered first line drugs for idiopathic epilepsy. They areeliminated by the liver and over time may cause liver damage. Your vet will want to monitor liver function testson a regular basis to avoid this problem. Also blood levels of these drugs are checked to help with deciding onthe dosage required. Bone marrow depression and anemia may occur, so a blood count should be done yearly aswell.Potassium Bromide can be used in dogs. Interestingly, it is not well tolerated by humans, as it causespsychological problems in people. However, this is not a problem for dogs. Salty foods should not be given withbromide. Bromide can be mixed with food, as it sometimes can cause an upset stomach.Valium diazepam is affective in treating the acute phase of seizure activity. It is not as effective when givenroutinely, and is usually reserved for emergency situations. Many of the newer antiepileptic drugs, such as Dilantin, Tegretol, and Depakote, are metabolized more quicklyby dogs than humans. The need for frequent dosing and their higher price tag makes their use impractical fordogs.Unless the seizures are due to low blood sugar or low oxygen due to heartlung disease, there is no reason torestrict activity. Most epileptic seizures occur when the pet is relaxed and quiet, or even sleeping. Most epilepticpets can lead relatively normal lives with careful monitoring, a healthy diet, plenty of fresh air and exercise, andtheir favorite human nearby.References Davol, Pamela A. Why do breederexhibitors show dogs havingpeculiar attributes that a standard specifically addressesas undesirable A second question is this. If you chooseto show a dog that is not the norm, should one whinewhen it does not win Some descriptions arent imperativeto include in a standard. ExampleDog has hopefully two ears, four legs, one tail, one head, and it isexpected to make it around the ringwithout falling over its own feet. This isBasic dog 101.Breeding dogs is a genetic luck of thedraw. Despite testing and selectivebreeding, occasionally an undesirablesurfaces. Why are these dogs appearingin the ring and putting judges on thespot regarding breed standards Somedogs become champions despite theiroddities. This often destroys breed typeas surely as wrong body shapes andincorrect top lines. Added to ignoranceof breed specific movement and wehave the generic show dog.Generic show dogs are due tothe acceptance of things in the ring thatJudges education highly emphasizes breed standards.Parent clubs offer pictorial standards explicit regarding faults andvirtues. Not all dogs entering the ring represent the standard. Wesee variations all over the board regarding type and function. There doesnt always have to be a winner. This is why each judgehas the option of withholding on lack of merit.Winners today often fit into a category of the majorityof what is in the ring on a particular day. Many times the star ofthe ring walks. If the different dog is a stand out and representsthe standard, as ideal, should we not recognize it Justbecause it is rare, does not make the dog wrong The hardest dogto finish today may well be the best dog you ever bred Somejudges may hesitate to put up something different from those inthe rest of the class. Is there a trend to breed to what wins today rather than tothe standard Whatever happened to judging breeding stockJust because a dog receives a blue ribbon, it does not mean thejudge thought it wonderful. It may be simply acceptable in theireyes, the best of the least. Could the tail be wagging the dog Isit possible a judge thinks the odd duck out is beautiful, but doesnot feel secure enough in the standard to take this dog to the topNEXT BIGTHING E. Breeders used them and culled ruthlessly. Theability to make tough decisions makes a true BREEDER Noroom for softies here. Not all dogs are winners. Not all winners are good dogs Many are examples of a breeding program gone wrong. Judgemust address these variances and not dignify them with an award. In case of a question, the judge, heshe should go immediately tothe standard and look, rather than ignore the dog.In whose opinion is a dog such as this, worthy of beingshown Is someone trying to make a point An example whiteheaded Greater Swiss Mountain dogs. We see large white spots onsable Shetland Sheepdogs, Pembroke Corgis too long or withexcessive white around their eyes. Australian Shepherds andAustralia Cattle Dogs appear in the ring complete with white bodyspots. Colors not listed in the standard, unusual color combinationsto meet a preferred whim. Double merles, double dapples, and whites, where none are acceptable, all deviate from the norm.Any hound color giving an unattractive specimenSitting ringside, four seasoned people could not identify adog in the Group Ring. They all voted for a different breed due toan unusual color, wrong body type, too much bone, bad top line, and lack of head type. Obviously, since the dog went on to aGroup win, someone knew. Needless to say, some at ringside werestill confused. To judge a dog, one must understand body shape andbreed specific movement. Understanding top lines is a necessity.Understanding herding techniques helps understand movement. Australian Cattle Dog fly around the ring full speed. Thisdoes not denote correctness. This off square dog works in tandemwith a cohort. Some are natural headers, some are heelers. Adog with any salt will show strengths one way or the other. Beyou breeder or judge strength of ones convictions is imperative. Ifa dog is different and IS CORRECT, judges owe it to the breedstandard to bring THIS dog forward and reward it as much aspossible on any given day. A judges job is not only to select thebest of the breeds, but also to cut classes and bring the cream ofthe crop forward to assist in developing the exhibitors eyeregarding true breed type.Drags in a breed should not be rewarded. Judges mustunderstand what breeders are trying to eliminate and what they areattempting to perfect. Only then can they truly support the standard. Many clubs today are interested inteaching virtue or property classes. Wehave stops, ears, heads, feet, and so on.The concept is wonderful, however, many times, the people they are teachingdo not have the first idea of BasicDog 101. Once becoming indoctrinatedto pieces, they select a fewanimals that catch their eye, and thenstand directly ON TOP OF the dogs andstudy. The final placement is made on aparticular virtue or attribute rather thanthe WHOLE dog. A judge must backaway and allow the class winner to fillthe eye regarding symmetry. Watchring procedure from ringside to understandthis concept.A template is or should beburned into a judges head regarding theideal of any breed due to our pictorialstandards. The standards ARE NOT ASUGGESTION They are our blueprintsThe Englishmen of long agomust be spinning in their graves today.Look around you. Many serious breedersare spinning at ringside right now atselections being awarded. With becoming a judge comesresponsibility. Clubs entrust judges withtheir breed standards. Judges shouldNOT betray this trust. Judges preferenceshould NOT enter in until two ormore dogs represent a written standard.Until such time, a judge should not beentitled to a preference. Soundsharsh, perhaps it is. However, lookaround at what is in the ring today andthe new mixed breeds selling likehotcakes on the Internet. When did we stoprewarding excellence When did we stop measuring progressWhat does this gain anyone Nothing Who is gainingNot the exhibitor breeding to standard. Not the breeders tryingto preserve the breeds. Not the newcomer watching with eagernessto join the sport. Not the person who is trying to figure outwhat to buy. We are sending false signals as to what is, andwhat is not acceptable in our sport today by what breeders, exhibitors and handlers take into the ring. To reward advertisingcampaigns or to follow suit of something another judge put up,does not speak well for sport. People will talk, both pro andcon, about a judges choices. However, if in your heart, you havestudied well, you will establish a reputation of a true knowledgeof dogs. The only person a judge must please is himself.Today clubs exclude older seasoned judges and theirtalent goes to waste. Having few avenues left to the AKC Repsto truly determine a judges expertise, inept judges continue toaffect the sport. Those questions alone have a profound effect on ourgreat sports future. We should hold our judges accountableregarding their choices. They should be able to intelligentlyarticulate to an AKC rep their choices and find in the standardbook the sentences to back their choices up. Canned critiques areuseless. Unless it comes directly from the mouth of the judge, acanned critique is simply checking the squares. Are open booktests and checking squares having a positive effect on our sportOften handlers progress as a fast pace when applying tojudge. Many feel this unfair. Handling a variety of breeds on a24-hour basis every day, spending 52 weekends a year at dogsshows, sitting through Groups and Best in Show, far surpasseswhat many of our new judges today have put into our sport.Sneaking the sunrise past the rooster may be possible, but whenthat rooster struts in the ring and crows his prowess, he bestknow what hes crowing about. Be aware, the hatchet andchopping block waits.I once used an Akita with a three-quarter-tail curl. Anotherjudge told me he received criticism for using the dog dueto the fact it did not have a double curl in the tail. I explained,The standard says. Tail, large, full, carried high over back oragainst the flank in a three-quarter, full or double curl, alwaysdipping below the level of the back. On a three quarter curl, thetip drops well down over the flank.Root large and strong. The double curl perhaps is aPREFERENCE, however, the threequarter tail is NOT a fault. Yet, to usethat tail requires some knowledge andcourage on the part of the judge whoweighs virtues against a perceivedfault.I hear many times I like thisor that. What we as judges like, is notoften what the standard calls for. Likesand dislikes should not enter in untilthere are two individuals equal inquality, THEN and only THEN, shouldour personal likes and dislikes enterthe arena. It is tough to judge tostandard when many people out sidethe ring are not aware there IS astandard. Judges should leave theirring with one person satisfied. Thatperson is THE JUDGE Hisherreward is in knowing they do NOdamage to the breed by their selectionof winners.Judges must be careful whenseeing something that is abnormal ordifferent in the ring. Never hesitate toreturn to a standard and re-read it.Read it on the spot Better to look atthe standard, than to ignore the dog.Give this some thought the next timeyour heart leans toward somethingunusual. Understand the repercussionsto promote such a dog.As breeders, we should keepthese dogs home, breed from them, love them, and use them as a buildingblock. It is both a breeder and judgeresponsibility that we do not send falsesignals to the public regarding what ISand what IS NOT acceptable accordingto our standards. The Next Big Thing Continued2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 892006, 1148 AM70m 41 44SEPTEMBEROCTOBER 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 71Letter from the Editor Letters to the EditorI really enjoyed the article in the last issue ofthe Review on the Hadleigh Poms. The legfollows in the same straight path of travel. This series is copyrightedand may not be reproducedin whole or part withoutwritten consent.Fronts MovingAs speed increases, the legs will incline toward a center line of travel.2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 8102006, 1112 PM72I I I I I i i i in4L.i^iIFAmAxr ' x ri\ _rJniH.\wr\- ri8K" Ki ivvV4p3 34 4T f1 f^ w 5yJ, f,uItu J^i"1 f-nr'j ,, .j^.JKvvifj4 ^srP^FftI V'^14 s\F\vf 'i4 J'ui.Em...yoty' VIV ,invJv\v'v Miv-trlwri .4SEPTEMBEROCTOBER 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 73See illustration 2 and 2a. As speed increases to a faster trot, the legs will incline slighttoward a centerline of travel, but they must never cross over. Any other movement is wastedaction.Too much width of chest will mean the legs are mounted so as to cause the dog standing andmoving to be too wide. The elbows must be tight to the body. They will also affect themovement in front and may or may not be visible, depending on the amount of coat the dogcarries. If the dog does not have enough width of chest and is narrow in front, he may crossover when he moves. Since Pomeranians are at the mercyof those who breed them, one sometimes finds a dog that is too short-backed. If this is incombination with a rear and or front, which are not balanced, the dog may side wind. This means that he will tend to step sideways with his rear to avoid hitting the front feetas he travels. The dog has an odd appearance as he travels towards you because youcan start to see him walking sideways at the same time he is moving toward you.Sometimes this is just a phase the dog is going through and he will grow out of it.Sometimes you can try moving the dog on the other side to train him out of it. First youmust learn to recognize and understand what causes it.2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 8102006, 1112 PM74I I I I I i i i in4, ttllfMT'\^4v rVim r - WlAi,'K^ Ie w4V \ gf. jb i 3SSif S4fN o -tL \4.v V4 im,m4 s "-^.\SMi fa \Vj4 4^A,-JTAa'.TV \rt V. bs.f. A strong willed, compassionate person, Sophie was one of the first people in modern day Poms toimport a pure white Pom from Germany. The Pom Review Editor from 1969 to 1978, Sophie was APC President in 1979 and 1980. Sophie servedon the Board of Directors off and on for five different years starting in 1964 and through 1981.Sophie not only had Poms, she also owned a pet Boxer and Cocker. She bred Dobermans and Poms. Shetrained them for obedience and conformation. An article from Times Past in the AKC Gazette mentioned a Pomeranian, Georgians Betty CD, CDX,UDT 1948 the first TOY to win all obedience degrees, began Sophies desire to show a Pom in performanceevents. Sophie enjoyed a great interest in not only obedience, but tracking as well. There was an account in theGazette of a trial in Philadelphia where the wind was so bad a poor little Pom could not stand up. The judge toldthe handler to pick her dog up. This handler was Sophie.Wendell Sammett was Sophies handler. David Fitzpatricks professional handling debut was handling aPom for Sophie.Sophie was one of the founders of the Bay Colony Pom Club and former sister-in-law of Esme Treen.Current APC Board Member Sally Baugniet remembers Sophie as a very dynamic member, putting thePom Club ahead of her own personal agenda. A description of the requirements for this title was in the July-August 2006 issue ofthe Review. Angie saysI know youre always looking for help with the column and who doesnt want to brag Its cool in the Pomcircle, but the working people are like, Why would you do that with a Pom The Schutzhund titles generally areachieved by macho breeds like German Shepherd Dogs, Belgian Tervurens, etc.On Saturday, June 17, 2006 Sunpoms Kodak Moment, CDX competed for and earned his BH. This is an outsidesport, done on an open field in any weather. On Saturday it was about 95 degrees without a cloud in the sky. Before competing, you have to show the judge your dogs tattoo or just their ear, if they dont have one. Next, the two teams heel up to the judge and introduce yourself Angie and Kodak reporting in for BHobedience. You perform in pairs we were paired with a friend and her German shepherd because he lives withsmall dogs and was not thought to be a threat to Kodak. The pairs work opposite each other and wewere to complete the long down first. I had Kodak stay in a down and stood 30 paces away with my back to himwhile the other team completed the rest of the obedience portion. Kodak has been a big challenge to train, but hes become such an amazing competitor. I think we trust eachotherhe believes I will be clear and fair and I believe he will try as hard as he possibly can. He works his heartout for me. I was told by several people that his obedience was the best on the field that day.He did the down well right up to the endon the video I could see a bug was bothering him. He snapped at it andwent into a sit. After laying in the sun for 10-15 minutes in that heat he went out and heeled away. I wasconfident every step of the way that he was going to do what I was asking of him. He did well on all 350-400 stepsof heeling. The only problem we had was the sit out of motionhe laid down. He did the down out of motion perfectly andthe recall was lightning fast with a perfect front and very nice finish.2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 892006, 1150 AM81i i i in4r4 4V'\4 ggi kL "I lX m. 4r IM I81 ' .rvi .. n1.,.v MK.4iPflW14 51.BB9B3. . I hope to have Oliver in Utility work in time for the Specialty. Does this mean we will have to competeagainst this Super Dog I always look forward to watching this team at the SpecialtyTRACKINGToday was a day I was glad I have two dogs to work with. That way, when the wheels fall off one, theres anotherone doing well. Usually.I put in two tracks, one for Rave Collie and one for Bogey Pom. Conditions were OK, not optimal. It was cooland sunny with a good breeze and the cover dry and short. I wanted to run Rave at 30 minutes and Bogey at 35.My friends have some sort of ESP that tells them when I am just about to start a track. Thats when one of theminevitably calls me. So while Raves track aged to 35 minutes, I talked on the phone.Oh well. She started off nicely. Not surprisingly, she worked the first turn pretty hard, but it was on the crest of ahill with the breeze behind it and tall cover at the bottom of the hill, so she had a little difficulty, but picked it upand went on. Then at the second corner, she announced something scary had walked there. Hackles up,crouching, sniffing loudly, growling. I couldnt see anything but she did not want to give it up. While she fussedat the second corner, I looked ahead and spotted two people and two dogs on flexies wandering around in themiddle of the second and third legs. They picked up the baited article on the third leg, fed the bait to the dog, andthen worked for a long time to get the article away from the dog who had latched onto it and did not want to letgo. It was a chow and I figured maybe a trip to the emergency ward would be the next event but finally they gotthe article out of the dogs grip. I thought they would abscond with the article, but amazingly they put it back andafter wandering around some more, they left. The cross tracks were one issue, and the age of Bogeys track hadnow become another. Rave finished the track wonderfully. She paid no attention to the cross tracks on the thirdleg but worked them hard on the fourth leg where the people and dogs had walked on a wide path in the park.Eventually she gave that up and finished. This was only her second track that had not been run by Bogey earlierso I was very happy. Then it was Bogeys turn. His track got to be 42-43 minutes old and that proved to be too much. He started outOK not great and then just got lost. Then the wheels really fell off when I missed a flag and went from corner two to corner four. Theterrain is hilly with lots of trees so thats an easy thing to do. Of course, if he had been tracking, he would havetold me I was wrong, but he was lost. I gave up, let him find the last article, and went home mad at myself. Welost an article I had put an additional article on his track but we found a toy dinosaur some kid had lost so webroke even in the article department. I just cant read a map and handle a dog at the same time, and when Iveput in two tracks, I sometimes end up doing this. The solution is to track with a friend who would lay my track, but Ive had too many episodes of friends getting me lost on the track they lay I find Im more reliable thanthey are so I continue to track alone and occasionally have this problem. So lessons for today. Bogey, being northern and bred to work problems out for himself, does not give up anddoesnt need extra articles to keep him going. His track today was way too old. I think Ill run him first in thefuture because I think Raves sense of smell is better than Bogeys. If the second track gets too old, I think shellhandle it better than he does. I could lay and run one, then lay and run the second, which would eliminate theproblem of the second track getting too old, but it takes too much time. I have to get out of the park by 830 a.m.to avoid the picnicking crowds and Im just not willing to get up early enough to do sequential tracks.Summer tracking is hard On the good side, I dont have to struggle into layers of rain gear, which is a hugeplus. On the bad side, the conditions make tracking harder for the dogs and the good weather makes it hard tofind a suitable place that isnt buried in people. Dogs dont progress as fast in the summer as in the otherseasons, but when fall and the rains arrive, they make huge leaps forward. I know Im very lucky to live where Ican track year-round I know many of you on this list cant track in the summer months at all because of heat, humidity, foxtails, andor poisonous snakes, so I am grateful to my smart great-grandparents who came toOregon in a covered wagon with eight kids. There are manywho absolutely cannot step into a show ring for one reason or another. However, in my opinion it is moregratifying to show and finish a dog of any breed on your own. I love the time I get to spend with my dogs. To methis is not just about the wins and the ribbons, its about the dogs. We spend our morning primping, gettingbreakfast and pumping up for the show. They know its show day, too. They jump in their crates and are gladlyloaded into the car. No one complains and are all in general, excited. At the show site, I personally get to takethem out and groom them. We get ready and I take them in the ring. Winning or losing the ribbons doesntmatter, I always come home with the winning dogs. After we show, most times I will go vendor shopping.Always with a dog in tow. After all, they like to shop the vendors too. So from the morning until we arrive safelyback home, my day is spent with them. Always consult a professional, legal council andor a licensed veterinarian.have a handler do it for us. I know some handlers that could finish a cat, as long as their Judge is Judging. IT ISJUST MY OPINION the show ring is very very political. It is a shame because there are some wonderful Pomsout there that never get looked at.I was at a show recently, just watching. I was shocked to watch a well known judge, put up a puppy not aPom that would not even let her touch her on the table. The handler could not control this dog either. She gaveher W.B. There were other lovely bitches in that ring with her, but not with a handler. Then the judge went on togive this puppy B.O.W. when she would not walk around. The male had outshown her. Then gave this handlersspecial the breed which was a lovely dog. Now if this bitch was mine and only won because of the handler Iwould be embarrassed. I feel if my dog wins with me on it, it makes me very proud.Angela NisbetMai-t-toi KennelI have used handlers and I have also shown my own dogs. I am very thankful for my handlers because not onlydid they finish dogs for me but they taught me so much along the way. On the other hand, I have started showingmy own dogs and I am addicted to the show ring. I love showing my own dogs and will continue to show myown dogs. I feel it is a little more gratifying when your dog finishes its championship being either owner handledor owner breeder handled.Danielle SartainDasar PomeraniansWriters and other communicators who specialize in purebred dogs are invited to enter competition for the Purebred Alliance ofWriters PAW Arthur Frederick Jones award to be presented at PAWs Second Annual Meeting and Luncheon February 10, 2007, atSardis Restaurant, New York City, the Saturday before the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Our theme this year was Lifes A Beach.Trophies were theme oriented with hammock swings for BOB prizes and many fun beachy items for all other trophies. TheBrush Prairie Cluster came through in a pinch when our specialty had to be moved from Hillsboro, OR to Salem, OR. Wewere able to hold our show indoors and out of the heat. That was a pleasant change. Christy Murphy was Show Chair andshe did a bang up job Thank you to our judges, Mrs. Dorothy Macdonald and Mrs. Peggy A. Hogg. We would also like tothank our sweeps judges Mrs. Judy Stout Reynolds and Mr. Terry McIntyre. Very special thank you to our ring stewardAnn Griffith Morris for doing so fine a job both days. The first day ended with a club sponsored potluck with most of the exhibitors in attendance. Since this is a new event, I havebeen receiving questions from club members, so I would like to explain how our event will be run. Thiswill give you plenty of time to pack your bags you wont want to miss itThe Top Twenty Pomeranians in Breed will receive invitations to enter and participate in ourevent. The event will be held the Monday evening of our National Specialty Week. It will be a black tieoptional affair, with exhibitors and spectators asked to dress in their finest formal or semi-formal attire. The judging will be done by three judges. A Handler Judge, a Breeder Judge, and an AKCapproved Judge, ideally all with many years in our breed. After the twenty exhibitors have been broughtinto the ring, the judges will be escorted into the center of the ring. Each of these judges will be handed ascore sheet with point allowances for the different features important to our breed. These judges will eachexamine all twenty dogs on the floor and the table, and record their points on their secret score sheet. TheTop Twenty committee will tally the scores and announce the winner. Scores will never be published, andwill be destroyed by the Top Twenty Committee. One dog will be named the winner, which will beannounced at our Banquet after breed judging Wednesday evening. This event has been done in other breeds for years, and becomes quite a highlight of their NationalSpecialty. It showcases each dog for much more time than you can when there are 60 BOB entries, andgives spectators a ring-side view of our best dogs. This is the place to see the cream of the crop ondisplay. There are many exciting features to this show that we have never done before at any eventFirst, we will be printing a beautiful keepsake catalog for the event, which will become a collectors item.It will have a show posed photo of each dog, with a three generation pedigree on the facing page. Forthose of you who cant make the event, the catalog will be available for purchase through the APCwebsite as long as supplies last. All dogs entered in the event will receive a beautiful commemorative rosette with APC TopTwenty and the dogs name embossed on the ribbon. The winner, and the breeder of the winner, will alsoreceive an award rosette at our banquet. Now, as far as spectators, we will have an array of food which will be included in the 10admission price and a cash bar at the event. The menu is being planned right now, and will be asspectacular as the dogs and the dressTo cap this exciting evening, because the winner will not be announced until Wednesday afterbreed judging, we will also have a Peoples Choice award. Every spectator that purchases a catalogbefore or at the event will have a Peoples Choice ballot tucked inside. At the end of the event thecommittee will announce and award a rosette to the Top Twenty dog chosen by the spectators ringside. This gives everyone a chance to be a part of the judging, and again acknowledges the best of our breed.Information on catalog and ticket sales will be on the APC website and in the premium list before theNational Specialty, and if anyone needs any information, please feel free to call me 631 366-2330 oremail me at MzJoaniwon.com or Jackie Rayner at Jaken5995aol.comThe Top Twenty dogs and bitches should watch their mailbox for an invitationJoan Behrend2006 SEPT OCT REVIEW.p65 892006, 1152 AM93I I I I I i i i in4gwioiSPr 4\^iit illm\4 4S 1i494 - SEPTEMBEROCTOBER 2006 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWTHE POMERANIAN CLUB OFGREATER HOUSTON - MEET THEBREEDS - 72206Written by Connie Zieba Photographsby John David ZiebaMeet the Breeds Pomeranianstook place on Saturday, July 22, 2006at the Reliant Park World Series of DogShows in Houston, Texas.
