Since 2002, the first year of the PPCP program, there has been more then 710,000generated for health research, education or rescue. As of 2005, there are 149 National breed clubsparticipating in the program.Heres how the PPCP Program works Pro Club members redeem weight circles from bags of participatingPurina brand dog foods. Purina tracks these weight circle submissions, and for every 100 of qualifyingweight circle points earned by Pro Club members, Purina donates 10 to the participating national parentbreed club.Points are accumulated throughout a calendar year, and in February, a check representing 10 percent of thevalue of the submitted weight circles for the year is evenly split between the participating national parentbreed club and the AKC Canine Health Foundation. The donation that goes to the AKC Canine HealthFoundation is eligible to be matched up to 100 percent by the Canine Health Foundation if it meets theFoundations funding guidelines.Lets Make the National Truly SpecialAre you a procrastinator I am, world class When something comes in the mail, I open itthink Ill take care of this in a few days. then toss it on the desk. All too often, more than a fewdays go by and I forget and miss a deadline. Trophy donation requests and ballots frequently fallvictims to this. I do better with a clear-cut deadline. I usually manage to get my grades turned in andalways get entries in by closing. Im sure you agree with me that trophies can add much to the funand glamour of a show. And we all want our National Specialty to be very special. So right now, put down thiswonderful magazine and go get your checkbook. How much should you send Think in terms ofentry fees most are at least 25 these days, so think in multiples of that. Let me know how you wantit to be used. Need a deadline to prompt you I need your check by November 8, 2008 to includeyour name in the premium list. After that, we still need your money and will happily recognize yourgenerosity in the catalogue. Of course, Pay Pal is also an option just send me a note to designateclass or placement. Please. Your veterinarian may also determine that thyroid medication is necessary. Nutritional deficiency especially zinc. Medication used to treat hyperthyroidism overactive thyroid gland can cause hypothyroidism.Diagnosis and TreatmentA veterinary exam and blood test are necessary to diagnose hypothyroidism as the symptoms listed may be caused byother diseases as well. If your veterinarian determines that your dog has hypothyroidism, heshe will likely prescribethyroxine. The mineral zinc and the herb ginger root stimulate the thyroid gland. Diet, exercise, and exposure to light are also veryimportant. With your veterinarians cooperation, you might try the following treatment before resorting to thyroxine Premium lamb and rice based dog food. One half of a Pet Tabs Plus supplement daily. One 200 mg. capsule of 41 concentrated ginger extract morning and evening. You can hide the capsule in asmall piece of meat or canned food or sprinkle the contents over some canned food. We are Junior and Jennifer Munn ofAchilles Pomeranians. Together we have built a small but verydedicated breed program that concentrates on consistency inquality in each of the one to three litters we produce yearly. Our story is one of partnership, mutual respect, and love, bothfor this breed and each other. Being involved in the sport ofpurebred dogs has enriched our lives in countless ways. Weboth enjoy immensely having the Poms be part of our homeand family. They never cease to amaze us in their ability togive boundless love and affection, while always having theuncanny knack of doing that funny little something, that bringsa smile to our faces, and makes the stresses of everyday lifejust fade away.We love showing together, and both enjoy watching each other shine in our respective roles. I concentrate on the breeding, whelping, and grooming, while Junior takes the lead, no pun intended, when it comes to handling, training, and daily care. Ithas only been in recent years that Junior has taken over the role as handler. However, its a role I gladly relinquished, as Ihave found great personal satisfaction in watching the Poms I work so hard to produce, being shown by someone who lovesand appreciates them as much as I do. Some of my proudest moments as a breeder and a wife have come through standingringside and seeing first hand the respect Junior has for our breeding program come to fruition through the time and effort heputs into showing our Poms as well as any professional handler could.Junior and I strive to live life to the fullest, and we both have careers that are very meaningful to us. Junior is in theconstruction field, and I work as the charge nurse at an assisted living facility. We enjoy spending time with our daughterTawny who will be 19 this year, as well as close friends, and are blessed to work with such remarkably caring people theyhave become like family to us. We both are very grateful to have colleagues who encourage and support us in our pursuit ofproducing and showing outstanding Poms. And I would be remiss in not acknowledging Tom Mares, Luke Shanks, Curtisand Daniel Carr, Rudy Heinatz, Lynn Smith, Pat Pierce, Linda Overbay, Rachel Brown, Elaine Freim, Betty Setteholm,Emily McAllister, Maureen Richardson, Goldie Rowe, Sarah Miller, and Tracey Sears along with the rest of our co-workersand my residents who cheer us on week after week. We hope we have been able to give a little something back through ourwork in pet therapy. I really cant express how much it has meant to me to have the ability to combine the two things I ammost passionate about in life, nursing and Poms. I have spent the last 18 years in the nursing profession. At this stage in mycareer to have the opportunity to provide top notch care for my residents while simultaneously sharing my Poms with them,is both personally and professionally extremely gratifying. As the two of us get older our love of travel continues to play an important role in our lives. We find it a wonderful way toexperience new things together, and especially enjoy the opportunity to observe the Poms being produced in different partsof the country. The ability to see varying types of Poms from one show to the next, helps us continue to learn and grow in ourknowledge of this breed, thereby allowing us to make the best choices for the future of our breed program in order to improvethe quality of our Poms with each breeding we do. In short, we are as devoted to this breed, as we are to each other, and seeourselves spending the rest of our lives, working together toward our goal of consistently producing Poms we can both beproud of.Currently, we are showing several dogs from our own breedings, as well as some obtained from other breeders whom werespect and admire. As a newcomer to the sport of pure bred dogs, I wasfortunate to read Pat Hastings book Tricks Of The Tradewhich had a profound impact on how my eye for a dog2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM34SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 35developed. Wehave used hermethods ofevaluation onevery litter wehave bred, andfeel it has beenessential inenabling us tocontinue to teachourselves aboutthe dogs we areworking with, andwhat theyproduce.BPIS Am Can Ch ChriscendoCommunicadoA phrase commonly used in the dog game is every dog hasfaults. This is of course true, and certainly applies to ourown dogs. However, I believe the more important part of theequation lies in the merits a dog possesses. Over time, wehave come to learn the lack of fault does not necessarily equalthe presence of merit. Breeding is complicated on so many levels, but one of the things that has become increasingly clear to me, isthe indispensable role a dog with merits plays in moving a breedprogram forward. This seems such a simple concept, but in fact, itis not. As often times a dog who has those unusual, or evenoutstanding virtues that set him apart, will also have issues thatprevent him from being a big winner in the show ring.A prime example of this is the two best litters we have bred to date. Each were sired by dogs with less than stellar show records. Andfor different reasons, could even be said to struggle in achievingtheir championships. Both dogs produced for me, and several others, puppies who had many of their wonderful qualities and none ofthe issues that prevented them from being big winners in the ring. They may not have lit the show ring on fire, but their kids sure did.I took away from that experience the knowledge that show recordsare not the litmus test I can use in determining the place a dogshould hold in my breed program. Instead I concentrate ondiversifying the faults in my breeding stock, while working towardsdeveloping that keen sense that a breeder must have to recognizedogs who have the ability to produce those highly valued traits thatcan be difficult to attain.Another philosophy Junior and I have adopted, is the importancewe place on using only good quality females as the dams of ourlitters. We found through experience the pups we produce tend tofavor their mothers heavily in both type and structure. Thereforeusing only those girls who have positive features to pass along totheir offspring is an absolute must for us. We look for females whohave the same characteristics as their male counterparts, includinggood structure and movement, correct outlines, nice bone, pleasingheads, short backs, and are in our preferred four to five pound sizerange. When planning a breeding we do not employ the thoughtprocess of finding a boy who can fix the faults of our girl. Insteadwe take the perspective of trying to find a pairing that will permitboth the male and female to play off each others strong points, while not doubling on either of the pairs faults. This in turn willenable their offspring to inherit positive attributes from both theirparents that they can then carry through to the next generation. That ideal of maintaining the quality on both sides of the pedigreewe believe will serve our breed program well for future generations, while not limiting us on line breeding on our males as well as ourfemales. In our search for the kind of Poms we wish to work with, we havebeen fortunate to befriend what in my opinion are some of the topbreeders in the Pom world today. They include Chris and JohnHeartz, Pam Dodsworth and Larry Fox, Mike and Shalon Parrott.Robert and Celeste Solano, Cheri McDonald, David and CarleneGilstrap, Judy Green, and Margaret McKee. Each of you haveshared with us your beautiful Poms, and in doing so have enrichedour lives with your friendship and support. Junior and I are honoredto work with the bloodlines you have developed and are constantlyinspired by your work in this breed. We hope in the years to come,as you see the fruits of our labor, you will share in that successwith us in knowing each of you played an integral part.In conclusion Id like to thank Brenda for honoring us with akennel visit. Id also like to express my gratitude to her, the entirePom Review staff, the APC Board, and all the committee chairsand members for the wonderful job they do. We all knowPomeranians are currently faced with many obstacles to overcome, such as ever constant anti-breeder legislation, questions on howto improve the overall health and soundness in our breeding stock, the ongoing debate over merle and its place in our breed, and lastbut certainly not least in finding a marker for coat loss so we canbegin to turn the tide of this ever increasing problem. However, Iwould strongly urge us towards working together on solutions tothese issues, instead of using them as a way to further divide us.Our generation of breeders did not create these dilemmas, soblaming one another and using them as a weapon with which toattack your fellow breeder is not only a waste of energy, but itdiscourages us from being honest with one another. And at theend of the day that only serves to hold us back from the solutionswe owe our breed to find.I believe, being a breeder, is one of the most challenging thingsany of us will do in our lifetime. The commitment, time, heartache, and joy are unlike anything else I have experienced. However, Iknow I speak for all of you when I say, I wouldnt trade it foranything in the world. Many of you reading this have touchedus through your sound advice, late night phone calls, shoulder tocry on, and supportive words about the Poms we have produced.Though there are too many of you to name individually, I justwant to take a moment to say your kindness is much appreciatedand you will always hold a special place in our hearts.2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM3536 - SEPTOCT 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWThe Pomeranian Club of Greater Houston held its annual Specialty Show at Reliant Center in Houston, Texas on Thursday,July 17, 2008. I am delighted. Never again will Ibelieve most breeders wouldnt fool with the weak ones. Im thoroughly convinced that most breeders, both large and small, want to save their puppies.Rectal feedings are resorted to only in extreme emergencies, where the puppy cannot swallow or is so far gone that oralfeeding would be useless. No matter how careful you are there will be tiny sore rectums. Cod liver ointment, which you cansecure from your veterinarian, is a must if you are to feed in this manner. Keep the little ones well greased with this ointment. This type of feeding is excellent for the little blue-looking whelps. Give honey and water rectally, blood warm, and applyartificial respiration. Rub briskly with warm cloths and lay the puppy on a warm heating pad. Nine times out of ten it willlive.Use one-half cup boiled water and one teaspoon strained honey. Honey and water is an easily assimilated quick source ofenergy. Increase or decrease the honey according to individual requirements of the puppy. No two are alike and it seems eachrequires a different feeding - some a bit more honey, some a bit less. Rectal feedings are given in much the same manner asoral feedings, a drop at a time, waiting approximately one-half minute between drops. I have found that 6 drops given hourly,or 3 drops each half hour, are about the correct amount for a day-old Pom puppy at each feeding. Gradually increase theamount as the pup grows older. This is round-the-clock feeding and would not be a sufficient amount if not fed day and night.Measure out what you want for one feeding in a warm teaspoon. Allow an extra drop for the spoon and one for the dropper.Grease the tip, and only the tip, and insert it. Squeeze the bulb only enough to deliver the one drop at a time. Do not remove itunless there is not enough air in the bulb to move the fluid. Hold it there until the puppy is fed. Be extremely careful. It is notnecessary to go high into the rectum. An inch is much too high One-quarter inch is plenty, and one-eighth inch is even better. There will be a tiny amount of urine and you will have to stroke the puppy with cotton dipped in warm water. Nothing elsewill be evacuated after the first waxy substance of the very newborn, as long as you are feeding in this manner. I rely almostentirely on this method for quick results. Every single drop fed rectally seems to be utilized, and the puppy usually improvesso rapidly that oral feedings can be started very quickly. Alternate beef extract feedings and honey and water if a puppycannot tolerate milk, and some of them cannot.Give only one drop of liver juice daily. As they get older you can give them a tiny ball of chopped liver. They will love it, butfor goodness sake, dont overdo this liver bit. Never feed raw pork liver. Make the liver juice by chopping a small piece ofbeef liver and placing it on a warm saucer. When there is juice or blood, draw up in a warm medicine dropper what is needed. It is well worth feeding that tiny amount. To make beef extract place small strips of lean beef in a fruit jar absolutely no fat. Put the jar in a heavy pot and add enoughcold water to come up to the level of the beef in the jar. Do not put the water in the meat. Simmer very slowly until juice isextracted. Do not dilute. Add nothing. Do not tighten lid on the jar.My Pet formula and Ive raised all my teeny weenie ones on it is one Id hate to do without. I give it to you leaving out thecod liver oil and Vionate, and substitute Bemeco which you can get from your veterinarian. Vionate is wonderful but youhave to crush it a bit finer and cod liver oil thickens the formula unless it is made fresh daily. Bemeco contains everythingnecessary and is terrific. If you wish to use Vionate and cod liver oil OK. Use one drop of oil and about one teaspoon ofcrushed Vionate. Add to 2 oz. of PET milk not Carnation, 2 oz. boiled water, 1 coffee spoon Karo syrup, one egg yolkstrained so that not one speck of the indigestible white slips by. Mix thoroughly. The formula, the honey and water, and thebeef extract can all be fed rectally, but usually the latter two are sufficient.I can sum up the whys and wherefores of this rectal feeding business in very few words, with apologies to Lord TennysonMine is not to question why,I feed em this way else they dieHow We Do It2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM46SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 47Top 10BreedJoan BehrendPomeranians AKC TopDogssm Using Breed TotalsStarting January 1, 2008 and ending December 31, 2008For Events Processed Through Wednesday, July 16, 2008 TotalRank Name Sex BOB Defeated 1 CH Velocitys Shake Ur Bon Bon D 59 1,174OwnerM Koga 2 CH Cr Tuff Guy Of Isabella D 54 919Owners R Solano, C Solano, R Smith, M Smith 3 CH Chars Bringin Sexy Back D 42 546Owners C Meyer 4 CH Oakrose HighN Mighty D 22 396Owners J Rose, G Stewart 5 CH Lanas Let Me Introduce Myself D 26 369Owner L Price 6 CH Razzle Dazzle Heavenly Choir D 21 320Owner J Green 7 CH Powerpom High Performance D 25 312Owner P Pongsak 8 CH Majestics Artistic Impression B 24 308Owners A Rister, C Creed, B Turner, S Turner 9 CH Larajus Don Juan At So-Me D 12 299Owners R Mellem, L Newbold, L Solomon 10 CH Lil Behrs Honey Nut Cheerio D 20 214Owners J Behrend, B BehrendAPC Member denoted by 2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM4748 - SEPTOCT 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWTop 10All BreedPomeranians AKC TopDogssm Using All Breed TotalsStarting January 1, 2008 and ending December 31, 2008For Events Processed Through Wednesday, July 16, 2008TotalRank Name Sex BIS I II III IV Defeated 1 CH Velocitys Shake Ur Bon Bon D 3 21 12 7 6 10,073OwnerM Koga 2 CH Cr Tuff Guy Of Isabella D 0 12 9 10 4 5,999Owners R Solano, C Solano, R Smith, M Smith 3 CH Powerpom High Performance D 1 4 2 5 6 2,915Owner P Pongsak 4 CH Chars Bringin Sexy Back D 0 2 8 2 5 2,098Owners C Meyer 5 CH Lanas Let Me Introduce Myself D 0 3 2 4 2 1,958Owner L Price 6 CH Larajus Don Juan At So-Me D 0 3 2 4 0 1,560Owners R Mellem, L Newbold, L Solomon 7 CH Razzle Dazzle Heavenly Choir D 0 1 2 3 1 1,243Owner J Green 8 CH Majestics Artistic Impression B 0 2 1 1 3 1,134Owners A Rister, C Creed, B Turner, S Turner 9 CH Valcopy Janels Spiderman D 1 1 0 1 1 906Owners J Pardue, J Reich 10 CH Oakrose HighN Mighty D 0 1 0 2 1 887Owners J Rose, G Stewart APC Member denoted by 2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM48SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 49Top TenExhibitor, Breeder,Junior ShowmanshipJanuary 1, 2008 through June 30, 2008 as reported by the American Kennel ClubTOP EXHIBITORS9 Charlotte Meyer6 Diane L Finch6 Celeste Solano6 Robert Solano4 Fabian Arienti4 Jose A Cabrera4 Sharon Hanson3 Christine Crane3 Carlene Gilstrap3 David Gilstrap3 K G Griffith3 George Smith3 Janice Smith3 Susie Zemo-LetchworthTOP BREEDERS10 Charlotte Meyer 8 Diane L Finch 6 Sharon Hanson 6 Fabian Arienti 6 Jose A Cabrera 6 Carol Leehmuis 5 K G Griffith 4 Carlene B Gilstrap 4 David Gilstrap 4 Camilla Knight 4 Karen Power 4 Celeste Solano 4 Robert Solano 4 Tom WilsonTOP SIRES6 CH Pufpride Sweet Dreams4 CH Mt Crest At Springwood3 CH Babydolls Buckle Up Ur Genes3 CH Cheyennes Kodiak Bear Second3 CH Daystar Cowboys And Indians3 CH Finchs Bet On The Parti3 CH Firebrooks Tabasco Fiasco3 CH Horizon-N-Janesa Indian Sundown3 CH Magic Touch Of LenetteTOP DAMS3 CH Amber Glow Of Lenette3 CH Gar-Vs Zeek-A-Boo2 CH Chars Walkin N A Winnin Way2 CH Great Rivers Tiamo Lets Hav A Ball2 CH Jan-Shars The Cookie Monster2 CH Rodis Cr Queen Of Stars2 CH Starfires Wicked Mary2 Bar-Net Abigail Of Oakridge2 Bavanews Divine Intervention2 Finchs Lo And Behold2 Gar-Vs Beau-Tiful Windflower2 Labays Savannah Of Lenette2 Panaches Picture Perfect2 Pomrytes Penny For Yor Thots2 Precious Moments Tender Love2 Starfires Robcary U GlowgirlTOP JUNIOR HANDLERSThrough June 30, 2008As reported by BestJunior.comAmanda Seitzer 247Stephanie Hentschel 208Rebecca Silverberg 76Ginger Riley 22Hope Gould 14Letesha Girth 11Nathan Lisenbee 11Taylor Brown 10Samantha Hyde 9Bailey Pfannerstill 9Matthew Lisenbee 8Ian Maniates 4Chelsea Valles 3Trinity McKain 3Daniel Belcher 2Rosie Sheppard 1Noelle Oleartchick 1Cora Halliday 1The Pomeranian Review includes all Pomeranian Exhibitors in their publication. Its principles have been used, whether by fortune or design, in every branch of husbandry since man first started controlling his environment. Aworking knowledge of genetics requires the assimilation and correlation of three basic areas. I think of these as thewhat, the why, and the how. The what is the basic vocabulary of the discipline. The why is the mechanics wherebythe end result is produced. The how is really the practical application of why - using your knowledge of themechanics to construct your own blueprint for perfection. PART ONE - THE VOCABULARYPhenotype Genotype The first, and most important, point to remember is that what you see the physical appearance, or phenotype isnot necessarily what you get the genetic profile, or genotype. That is why Mr. or Miss Top Winner may neverproduce anything worth looking at, whilst the less spectacular littermate produces excellence time after time.Genes Chromosomes Mitosis Meiosis The units of inheritance are referred to as genes. They come in pairs one donated by each parent and arelocated on the chromosomes. These are found also in pairs in the nucleus of every cell. Each species has a specificnumber of chromosome pairs the dog has 39, man 23, cat 19, etc. All the chromosomes and thus the genes of anyone organism is the result of cellular duplication, termed mitosis, which started at fertilization. All the organismsgenetic material is the same in all its cells with one exception the mature primary reproductive cells or gametes. These are the sperm in the male and the ova in the female. These cells carry only half the number of chromosomesand thus half the number of genes. This is not a haphazard allotment. Each sperm or ovum receives one half of eachpair in a reductive cellular division called meiosis, so that when it unites with its opposite number at fertilizationthere will again be a full genetic complement to act as a blueprint for the new organism that will result from thisunion.Alleles Homozygous Heterozygous Dominant Recessive Genes Any gene may have more than one alternative for the trait it produces e.g. blackbrown, tallshort. Each ofthese alternatives is termed an allele. When the two alleles present are identical the animal is said to be homozygousor pure for that trait, and that animal is only able to pass on that form of the trait. When the two alleles areMary Allen, Guest Writer2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM52SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 53different the animal is said to be heterozygous or hybrid in reference to the trait. The heterozygous animal willnot breed true for the trait. When an animal is heterozygous it is noticed that one form will be expressed, while theother form will be masked. The form which is expressed is said to be the more dominant, the masked allele morerecessive. As an example, take the S spotting series of the coat color genes. This series is responsible for theamount of white marking in the coat. The S series consists of four alleles. These are, in order of decreasingdominanceS Self color, or totally pigmented coat.si Irish Spotting - small areas of white on chest toes.sp Piebald spotting - larger white areas eg Springer Spanielsw Extreme white - mostly white, only small areas of pigment. Note that S is dominant to all the other alleles si is recessive to S but dominant to sp and sw sp is dominantonly to sw and sw is recessive to all the other alleles.Incomplete Dominance Most of the time the phenotype of the homozygous dominant and that of the heterozygous individual will beindistinguishable. Occasionally, however, the heterozygous animal will have a different phenotype from either thehomozygous dominant or the homozygous recessive. This phenomenon is called incomplete dominance. This iseasily illustrated in the Shetland Sheepdog. Dominant MM individuals are almost all white and frequently sufferfrom sight and hearing defects. Mm individuals are the dappled merles, whilst the double- recessive mm animalswill show normal coat patterns and colors as determined by other color genes. This also points out the fallacy of thecommonly held belief that all good genes are dominant, and bad ones recessive.Monogenic Polygenic Traits Some traits, such as the chocolate color, are determined by a single gene and referred to as monogenic characters.Other characteristics, such as body size, are determined by many genes acting in unison. These traits are referred toas polygenic.Modifying Genes These genes seem to modify the expression of one allele in a gene series, but not the other. A good example isthe B-b gene, responsible for black B or chocolate b pigmentation. Whereas there is very little variation in theintensity of black pigment, a wide spectrum can be seen in the chocolate varying from the darkest brown to a lighttaupe. This modification is polygenically controlled.Threshold Characters These characters are always polygenically controlled. They can be thought of as traits which require a certainnumber of plus polygenes to be present before the trait can be expressed.Sex Linked and Sex Specific Traits A sex linked trait is one that is carried on the X or the Y chromosome - those which determine the sex of theorganism. An example of this is haemophilia. Carried on the X chromosome, this disease is carried recessively bythe female, to become apparent in those of her sons that inherit that recessive X chromosome. Very rarely, a femalewill be affected as a result of a carrier mother and an affected father. A sex specific trait is one carried on any gene other than the X or Y, i.e. on an autosomal gene but which canonly find expression in one sex. A good example is cryptorchidism, the failure of one or both testicles todescend normally into the scrotum. If a single testicle descends whilst the other is retained the animal isunilaterally cryptorchid. Monorchid signifies that the animal has only one testicle - no matter where it islocated. Obviously, only males can show these abnormalities, but the trait is carried by both sexes.Part 2 will continue in the NovDec 2008 Pom Review2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM5354 - SEPTOCT 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW WANTED Uniqueand candid Pomphotos are welcome. Its Just Fur Fun.2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM54SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 55We continue to have good things to report concerning our effort to find answers about Alopecia X. As we have reportedpreviously, the Pom community was most cooperative to donate DNA samples this past spring. Our number quota wasaccomplished. These samples were successfully received at the University of Bern, Switzerland, by Dr. Tosso Leeb.A major step was achieved in order to do the next phase of DNA study. In late July, Dr. Leeb reported that the EU-LUPAsteering committee has approved the genotyping of our Alopecia X cohort for the whole genome association study. Hecontinued by saying, This is indeed great news, and we all should be very grateful to the European Union, which supportsthis research very generously. This represents approximately 40,000.00 worth of support. And without this amountapproved, the total needed would have had slim possibilities to be able to be raised. In the first part of August, Dr. Leebturned in an Acorn Grant request to the AKC-Canine Health Foundation, which the Pomeranian Charitable Trust haspromised to support. When we receive the formal request from the AKC-CHF, we will need to provide the funds quickly. Iam hoping that our donors see the necessity for raising and saving these funds so they can be put into immediate action whenneeded. Sometimes it seems as if nothing is happening during the beginning stages which do take time of putting theseplans together. Should we not be able to provide funds at the appropriate time, the whole project is generally scrubbed inorder to proceed with others. We form a piece or link of a chain. For those of you who have donated DNA already and have updates to make on a particular Poms medical condition, pleasecontact Dr. Leebs study directly by emailing Cord.Droegemuelleritz.unibe.ch This is particularly necessary for Poms thathave been described as unaffected that have since become affected. Or there have been recent veterinary test results toreport. Thank you for taking care of these details. Accuracy of data in is vital for informational discovery out.And we have started a new project. It is creating a photo file of Alopecia X Poms. I have requested that people send meclinical close-up photos profiles, rear views, and possibly abdomens of Poms affected with Alopecia X. They will be usedfor educational purposes. Some will be used on the PCT website. Others can be included in educational seminars. And,maybe the most important reason will be to be able to approach other researchers unfamiliar with Alopecia X to cultivatetheir interest and curiosity. Pictures should include a photo in any position before onset. A brief case medical history isdefinitely desirable. Please include the age of the Pom when the condition first onset what veterinarian tests were performed,if any, along with their results and what methods of recoating were attempted along with brief assessment of these.Another interesting subset of these cases could include cases that have recoated either temporarily or permanently. In thesecases, a before onset of Alopecia X picture should be included if possible, affected photos, and recoated photos. Ofcourse, we would want the case descriptions to be similar to all other cases onset age, medical tests performed, whatmethods of recoating, if any, failed, and what succeeded, and for how long.Dr. Leeb, upon hearing of our Alopecia photo file, has requested that if I receive a photo of a Pom that was included in theDNA study at Bern, I forward a copy to him. Once again honoring confidentiality, the only way we could help with this isfor you who have donated blood samples to voluntarily send us that information along with photos of that Pom. This requestcomes with the understanding that the more information we can give the researchers, the more likely we are to find answersto our questions.Once again, I have been very pleased with the cooperation I have already received globally. I think we are all very tired ofnot having any true answers to what is going on with this condition. This material can be sent to me directly atkranzmarhotmail.com or you can send others to the PCT website to read this information request atwww.pomeraniancharitabletrust.orgMarge Kranzfelder2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM5556 - SEPTOCT 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWAPC Judges EducationFred C. BassettGreetings to all Pom lovers. I hope you have had a wonderful summerenjoying your Poms and some dog shows. I am writing this havingjust returned home from the Reliant Park cluster of dog shows inHouston. What a great venue for a super set of summer shows. Itwas very successful with over 3000 entries at most shows, even withthe current gas prices. I presented our Pomeranian Judges EducationSeminar at a Toy Dog Institute jointly sponsored by the AmericanKennel Club and the Dog Judges Association of America. Our sessionwas extremely well-attended with 30 attendees. This was an Instituteformat, with a formal classroom session in the morning, followed bya hands-on class judging session in the afternoon. I want to thankErika Moureau, who assisted me with this program and arranged forthe dogs to come to both portions of the seminar. The Houston Pomexhibitors were terrific as well, volunteering to bring the dogs for us.We couldnt have been successful without their help.By the time you read this, I will have also presented our program at the American Dog Show JudgesInstitute in Pennsylvania, with help from Carol Leemhuis and Camilla Knight. These two institutesprovide a great opportunity to educate a large number of prospective judges interested in our breed. The Mentor Committee has begun our work to review the APC Membership Roster and invite membersthat we unanimously agree are qualified to be officially listed as Approved Mentors. The committeewill invite an initial list during 2008 and then perform a periodic review thereafter. The committeeconsists of Vikki Oelerich, Nadine Hersil, Curtiss Smith and myself.Other APC members can still be approved as Mentors by meeting the minimum qualifications requiredby our Standing Rules. The Standing Rule that refers to Approved Mentor qualifications Miscellaneoussection, 37 reads as followsAPC Approved Mentor guidelines require that minimum qualifications are a the person must be anAPC Member who is an active Pomeranian BreederExhibitor for 12 years, b have bred 5 Pomeranianchampions, c and have attended an APC sanctioned Mentor Seminar d or be an AKC ApprovedPomeranian Judge. Approved Mentors may also be invited to participate by the Mentor Committeefrom the APC membership list. APC Seminars will be presented by the JEC, or an Approved Mentor.I have had a couple of emails recently that indicate there is some confusion about what the ApprovedMentor program is for. It is strictly aimed at meeting the AKC requirement that Parent Clubs havequalified mentors available to help educate aspiring judges, specifically to meet the need for what arecalled ringside observation sessions where an aspiring judge sits ringside with an approved mentorand discusses the breed and the placements. The program has nothing to do with mentoring newowners and exhibitors on how to groom and show their Poms, or how to get started with responsibleand ethical breeding practices. All members are welcome to do this if they are willing to, and APCappreciates their time and efforts. There are no formal requirements for helping new people interestedin the breed.2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM56SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 57We all rely on mentors to help us as newbies to the dog world. This wasa regular outing, so it seemed from a distance.Today would be different, however an end, abeginning, and yet very necessary. A state park officerapproached the car and began to discover, the sadness of manyelderly, and financially unstable seniors today. This couple hadlost their home and had no health insurance. They began living out of their old, beatup station wagon, with onlyeach other and their nine dogsEach day they would head for shade and tie the dogs around them as they brushed and cared for them asbest they could. Unfortunately, it was neglect in many ways the dogs were covered in fleas, open sores, malnourished having no vaccinations, their health had begun failing. The man also had recently suffered a medical crisis. Too heavy for his wife to assist him, he sat in thefront seat without a way to get himself to the rest room, therefore the car and all its occupants were completelydeplorable. The officer called the local shelter to take the animals and proceeded to find social services to help thedestitute couple. All the dogs were placed in rescues that then cared for the medical needs first then began therehabilitation. We were able to help with three of the dogs. One of them was Sir Spiffy, a black and white pet partiPom with a striking resemblance to a skunk He was accessed, groomed, vetted and then placed in foster care, where he started to understand life as a companion in a home environment, feeling wellfed and healthy. As the days unfolded, he began to work through the grooming, the veterinarian care and the newness ofbeing without his person yet, he remained distant and very sad, from inside his being - that is until he metElizabethAdoption day This adoption was surreal. It was as if Spiffy communicated to Elizabeth instantly andshe to him. I had been his safe person for some time now and yet he immediately went to her without lookingback. He was no longer a nervous mess he had found his final life partner, and they were totally in sync.A SpiffyRescue2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM58SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 59Elizabeth has since told us that she KNOWS he was very well caredfor. She asked about Spiffys former owners, the man and his wife in thecar. She was concerned about the mans welfare and asked if we couldcheck and see if the previous owner was OK. She spoke with a level ofauthority, not bossy or unkind she just believed in what she was asking, like she was asking for Spiff. Elizabeth told us that shes a registered nurseand that her husband had been a published photographer with NationalGeographic for many years. Maybe her concern for Spiffs former ownercame from the nursing background. Or maybe like most of us sheunderstood the love of a animal that you would give you heart and yes, yourhome to.Today, everyone has adjusted to the changes and the upheaval, andaccepted their new living arrangements. This story is a happy one, of sorts. All the characters found peace, comfort, and a level of happiness throughthe heartbreak of it all.A Spiffy Rescue Continued2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM5960 - SEPTOCT 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWSweepstakes Judge Christopher Tilghman NealePuppy Dogs 6-9 months1st Honeykist The Boss. Twice last month she got out the frontdoor, once when I accidentally let her out, and once when one of my granddaughters did. Both timesshe ran as fast as she could, and paid no attention to my voice, which she considered noise behind her.The first time was when my neighbors were putting up a new fence, and there was NO fence betweenCrickett and busy Yaupon Street. The second time, my neighbor was backing down the driveway, andCrickett ran right behind the car. I was shouting NO, NO, NO and waving my arms, and luckily myneighbor saw me and stopped in time. Both times, when I did catch Crickett, I carried her inside, praising her, and fed her multiple people-treatsfrom the refrigerator to induce her to WANT to come back or be caught another time.By way of management, we put a baby gate across the hallway whenever Crickett was loose. We then started playing Come Games with Crickett. One person holds the dogs collar, while anotherteases her with the treat in front of her nose, saying her name and backing up. Crickett, Crickett,Crickett, Crickett COME When the word come is said, the first person releases the collar. Crickettruns to the treat and gets to nibble it while the second person takes hold of the collar. Its important tohave the dog think that getting caught is required for getting the treat. Then the two people reverseroles. This should be done no more than 3-4 times about 3 times a day. Treats must be of majorimportance tiny pieces of chicken or hamburger are great. The next week illustrated the success of this training. Someone came to the door, and I did not know thatone of my granddaughters had let Crickett out of her crate. She charged out the door and took off. Icalled, Crickett, COME She turned on a dime, raced back, and was carried rejoicing to the refrigeratorwhere she got multiple pieces of hamburger. AND the baby gate was put up again. It will stay there aslong as my granddaughters are here, even though when I know Crickett is loose I am able to say Waitand have her stay back from the door. Without the Wait, she does not yet have impulse control.Sidelight At the Reliant Dog Shows in Houston on July 19, I applied for Cricketts PAL PurebredAlternative Listing number from the AKC, and it arrived in the mail less than 2 weeks later. She is nowofficially Second Chance Jumpin Jimminy. It was fun to watch the people at the AKC booth taking2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM62SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 63Performance ContinuedCricketts picture for the PAL. AKC has to have pictures on file to prove that this is really a Pom. Theykept saying, Oh, look at this, isnt it cute I want another one. Digital cameras do allow for lots ofpictures I always thought Crickett was cute though not show quality, but it was nice to have that verifiedby the AKC.BEHIND THE RALLY CLIPBOARDI love to judge Rally and also Obedience, which I judge for UKC. Watching the teamwork between dogsand handlers gives me so much joy that sometimes I forget that one thing Im supposed to be doing isJUDGING. Taking off points for errors on the part of the dog or handler is just not as much fun as watchingthem work For that reason, I am presenting you with one of the easiest ways to avoid making the judgesigh and take off points in RallyRead the regulations. There are certain things that YOU can do not your well-trained dog that will costyou points or even a Non-Qualifying score. The new Regulations include in the description of eachexercise highlighted bold, underlined portions that if they are not done should cause you to receive anIncorrect Performance score -10 for that exercise. Note for example that on EVERY walk-aroundexercise, a pause in heel position is required. Watch the judges pencil fly when someone walks aroundand keeps going. There is a line that everyone should keep in mind in the AKC Rally Introduction Any faults intraditional AKC Obedience that would be evaluated and scored as a one-point deduction or more should bescored the same in rally, unless otherwise mentioned in the Rally Regulations. This means that your dogwill lose points for being out of heel position between exercises, not just during exercises. But it allows forthe unlimited communication in the way of commands and signals because that is specified in the RallyRegulations.Whenever the Rally Regulations do not address a subject, the Obedience Regulations take over. This is truewhen it comes to things like correcting a leash pop or collar tug or carrying your dog in the ring at anytime, even before and after the Start and Finish. I am always amazed at how many people will push the doginto a sit at the Start sign. And yes, even if your dog has bladder problems, incontinence in the ring is stillfouling the ring and will get you Excused. Yes, someone has tried to use that as an excuseAnd what about the collar and leash The biggest issue with the collar is the dog who comes into the ringfrom Agility with a one-pieced martingale collarleash. Your dog must wear a collar that can be separatedfrom its leash, even when you are in the Novice ring, and may not run naked in Advanced or Excellent. On the other hand, you cannot have tags attacheddangling from the collar. Most judges will tell you to geta proper collar and come back, and you can only hope that by the time you get back, your class will not beover. In the Excellent class, the handler must provide a 6-foot leash for the Honor exercise. I was theHonor Steward at a recent trial and could not believe how many exhibitors came without this required partof their performance. We managed to borrow a 6-foot leash from another exhibitor, but can you imaginesomeone entering the Utility ring without having provided the articles or gloves for those exercises OrOpen without a dumbbellNeed help understanding Rally or Obedience Volunteer to steward at a trial near you. This is a sure-firemethod of learning the ropes literally, if its an outdoor trial. At the simplest, you can offer to run theleash in Rally Advanced or Excellent, taking it from the handler and returning it after the course is run. That will also help you keep in mind the importance of everyone entering and leaving the ring on leash.2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM6364 - SEPTOCT 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWPerformance ContinuedHelp with course setup. Run the stopwatch. And watch the dogs in the ring. If you see a mistake made bysomeone else, it may help you avoid the same mistake. And if you are lucky enough to see one of thosebeautiful hold-your-breath runs, you will have a goal toward which to aim.TITLES, WE GOT TITLESFLYBALLBeverly Taub writes that Second Chance Pippin earned his FMCh Flyball Master Champion title Saturday,July 19, at Reliant Park in Houston. She says, This title takes 15,000 points. In Flyball you canpotentially earn 1, 5 or 25 points per run depending on team time. We ended up earning 732 points thisweekend. He truly ran like a big dog although hes only 5 pounds. Im so proud of my little SCPPippin Im sure his other mom, Barbara, is too Can you see me grinning When you raise a dog, feeding him with an eyedropper from the time he is two days old, you do tend to be a little attached to him.Bev continues, SPC Alfie had a little warm up time on the Flyball lanes Sunday. I would have donemore with him - even tried a full run - if I was more mobile. I just couldnt get from the box area to thestarting area in the allotted 1 minute warm-up time. Next year therell be at least 2 Second ChancePoms running Flyball at Reliant. Im hoping Alfie will make his debut in the October tournament inHutto near Austin.AMERICAN KENNEL CLUBCompanion DogEsmes Haleys Comet Aka Ms Hoo CD RN NJP, Carol Paris, 5252008CH Idlewyld Treasure Trove CD RN, Margaret R Mckee, 5242008Banjo James Reliknam Wishsong CD RE, Kevyn Michael Thomas, 6222008Companion Dog ExcellentKramie Casts A Shadow CDX, Peggy Mcgrath, 5252008, ILPRally NoviceAnoki Tso-Le-Tsu Tracy RN, Jennifer Jeri Tracy, 5162008Beauty-Full-Dream-Wendy RN, Kevyn Michael Thomas, 5242008Goldchips One In A Million CD RN, Rae LaPotin, 532008Laports Foxy Lady RN, Herbert La Port Barbara Winters-La Port, 4262008Sunshine Gator Boy RN, Dale Haralson, 5262008, ILPBarwings Jolly Jove RN, Barbara Winge, 672008, ILPOther Dog RN, Lynn Pollei, 6272008, ILPCH Paughprint Endless Tradition CDX RN, Paulette Zecca, 6222008Rally AdvancedC Js Prissy Prancer RA, Carol Karrasch, 532008D D Little Mavrick CD RA, Deb Beean, 5252008Beauty-Full-Dream-Wendy RA, Kevyn Michael Thomas, 61420082008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM64SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 65Performance ContinuedRally ExcellentD D Copper Penny CD RE, Deb L Beean, 5242008Pcs Little Two Tone Chevi CD RE. Only Crufts could compare in size and professionalismto the World Show and this is the crown jewel in the FCI Dog Show world. The size of the World Show was amazing More than 20,000 dogs over 4 days in a huge complex of 4 buildings, with 342different breeds from 57 countries in more than 70 rings each day. In conjunction with the World Show, Breed and Specialty clubs heldtheir own shows and specialties outdoors, during the same 4 days, Circuit at the Almare Staket Polo field outside of Stockholm. So thisgave Exhibitors and spectators a chance to see their breed at least twice, over the four days of shows as judging of the breeds were noton the same days. Poms were on outside on Saturday at the Circuit Show and indoors the next day at the World Show.Poms are in Group 5 which is the Spitz Group and today Poms were part of the Swedish Spitz Club World ChampionshipShow and Best In Specialty Spitz to be judged by fellow Canadian, Mr. Fred Peddie. There is really no room to explain the differencesin the judging systems here, but I have listed the winners of the classes and the sires and dams as that is interesting, you will recognizemany names. The quality of the entry, both Saturday at the outdoor show and the next day at the indoor World Show was excellent. Therewas nice depth of quality in every class and a variety of types. There were several dogs in each class worthy of the win. It was excitingto see so Canadian and American bloodlines being continued in Europe. The dogs were very well presented, though some of the trimming might have been considered a bit excessive for NorthAmerica, but that was balanced by some dogs that would have benefited from a bit more trimming. Outdoors, of course Poms are notalways at their best. It was windy and in Europe they enforce the foreign substance rule much more than in North America. Therewas no hairspray at all used in the coats that I could see.The entry was on Saturday was 71 Poms and the judge was our good friend Dr. Apiwut Kasemsanta, Pak Dome Pomeranians,of Bangkok, Thailand My comments are, of course generalized, as we were watching the dogs from ringside, and as you know, decisions are often based on what you cant see from that vantage point. Results from Circuit ShowBest Junior - DogBLACK ORANGES LIMITED EDITIONSire Sunterra Spontaneous Daystar Dam Black Oranges Not For SaleBreederOwner Susan Olhage, Sweden.A very nice young, orange dog, beautifully presented by his owner. Katie Gammill - Lerna, Illinoisindcrk13011consolidated.netwww.indiancreekshelties.comChildrenThey just seem to go together. We all have childhoodmemories of our pets. If visiting a friend with a new puppy, what is the best policy for assuring both the child, and thepet, have a positive experiencePuppies usually enter a household at the age of eight weeks. If thepuppy is purchased from a responsible breeder, it will be current oninoculations, worming, and socialization. However, your childs interactionwith a new puppy can encourage desired behavior. A bad experience for thepuppy may trigger adverse reactions that will follow it the rest of its life. Itis our responsibility to make sure we approach the puppy in a positive manner.1. Puppies this age require handling with care. It is YOUR puppy, soYOU set the rules. Have children sit on the floor when they hold your puppy.Young canines have little depth perception and few reservations aboutsailing off a lap into the unknown. This can result in broken limbs andpossible death. Do not place puppies on tables or couches, on chairs, inwagons or bicycle baskets.2. DO NOT PAT THE PUPPY ON TOP OF ITS HEAD Have thechild scratch the puppy under the chin or behind the ears, or gently pat thebody.3. Children should not kiss puppies or place their faces near the puppysmouth.4. Puppies, user friendly, have sharp toenails. Dress accordingly.5. NEVER ALLOW ANYONE TO CHASE YOUR PET. NEVERALLOW YOUR PET TO RUN WITH CHILDREN AS THEY AREEASILY STEPPED ON AND INJURED.6. Puppies view people as large, threatening boxes in a world made upof shoes and knees. KNEEL DOWN ON THEIR LEVEL.7. Never allow anyone to feed your pet without your knowledge andauthorization.8. Loud noises threaten puppies,so encourage moderate tones. Do notallow jostling or tussling amongchildren when the puppy is present.9. Playtime should be short, aspuppies require lots of sleep. Do notfeel obligated to allow others to overtire or stimulate your pet.10. Make acceptable toysavailable to the child and pet. Always remember, an out ofsight puppy is often a puppy introuble. The formative period isfour weeks to four months. Desirablebehavior should be encouraged duringthis door of opportunity. Usepositive stimulation, rewards, andexposure. Keep your puppy in adesignated area to encouragehousebreaking techniques. Feed atspecific times to control bowel habits. When you are gone, confine yourpuppy with safe toys and a treat.Turning on a radio or TV for companycuts back on fearful behavior,Puppies2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM72SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 73excessive barking, and anxieties. Place an old T-shirt or personal item in the crate for your puppy. Puppies require patience and care, and if your time is restricted, wait until a later time to purchase a puppy. A soothing voice builds confidence in adverse situations. Your dog will imitate your emotional response, soremain calm and confident. Establish yourself as alpha. Puppies need proper stimulation because boredom leads to problems. Chewing is normal for puppies. Givethem appropriate articles to chew on during teething. HUMAN ARTICLES OF CLOTHING AND SHOES LEFTON THE FLOOR ARE FAIR GAME. DO NOT CORRECT THE PUPPY FOR YOUR SHORTCOMINGS.Take your puppy to another location and give it an acceptable replacement. Do not leave tin cans, bottles, buckets, scissors, paper clips, or other small items where your puppy can reachthem. Remove access to all human food.Visiting humane societies and assisting in small chores is an excellent experience for young children.PARENTAL SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED. Shelter employees ARE NOT babysitters Teach children to berespectful of the dogs space and to follow directions to insure a positive experience.Every child needs a pet. Through caring for a pet, children learn responsibility. Dogs offer companionshipthrough play and activities as well as comfort during thoughtful times. Owning or playing with puppies buildshappy memories. Lassie and Rin Tin Tin remain ageless and fill the corners of our completeness. Dogs expectkindness and hold no grudges. We should not disappoint them.Children and Puppies ContinuedAKC TO CELEBRATE 125th ANNIVERSARY AT2009 AKCEUKANUBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPEntries For 2009 Show Open To All CompetitorsNEW YORK, NY February 29, 2008 The American Kennel Club ispleased to announce that the 2009 AKCEukanuba National Championshipwill be the platform for AKCs 125th anniversary celebration. In recognitionof this milestone, the AKC will waive the invitational format. As was the casefor AKCs centennial show in 1984, classes will be offered at the breed leveland championship points will be awarded. The event will take place in Long Beach, CA on Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13, 2009and will continue to showcase the top American dogs as well as offer the popular Bred-by-Exhibitorcompetition and Eukanuba World Challenge. AKC anticipates a very significant entry and therefore anentry limit may be necessary. The panel for this show will consist of almost 90 judges. To further commemorate the anniversary, AKC Parent Clubs are invited to hold a specialty or supportedentry in conjunction with this show. If a Parent Club chooses not to participate, then local specialty clubswill be given the opportunity to join us. The AKCEukanuba National Championship will return to aninvitation-only format in 2010. All dogs who would have qualified for the 2009 show will be invited toattend the 2010 show, along with the 2010 qualifiers. The AKC National Obedience Invitational and AKC Agility Invitational will be held in conjunction withthe 2009 AKCEukanuba National Championship. The Los Encinos Kennel Club, Kennel Club ofBeverly Hills and Long Beach Kennel Club shows will precede the AKCEukanuba NationalChampionship at the same site on Dec. 9-11, 2009.2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM7374 - SEPTOCT 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWI am Maria Jose from Spain and I am the President of CLUB ESPAOL DEL SPITZ ALEMAN CESA, aSpanish Club that promotes some activities related to the German Spitz Race, and I would like to explain to you a bitabout what we do in it.On the 8th June 2008 we held our first meeting for our Club under the name of HAPPY DAY DEL SPITZALEMAN in Madrid, capital city of Spain. We chose this location as meeting point for all members as it is situated in thecenter of Spain, which makes easy for everybody to arrive from different areas in the country. This city counts on a greatnumber of beautiful big parks where dogs can run and play freely as you can see in the photos. Events like this one arewithin a whole range of activities that we organize as a Club and later present to the Spanish Kennel R.S.C.E.As President of CESA Im very happy to say that a total of eighteen dogs took part in the event. Both the dogs andtheir owners and family had a good time. This experience was the perfect excuse to meet some new members of our Club.On the Happy Day we could also talk about several aspects related to our race health, general advice andguidance about reproduction among the different varieties Zwergspitz, Kleinspitz and Mittlespitz. As a Club we areworking hard to make sure that all crosses are done according to the specific variety dogs belong to.There were also talks about grooming for pet dogs and show ones. This task is unfortunately not very well knownat hairdressers for dogs in Spain and that is why we, as a Club, try to help others to get to know all its secrets. Our Club also holds a monthly photography contest. The twelve most beautiful pictures chosen will be the onesrepresenting each month of our calendar for 2009. The rest of the pictures will be kept and shown on the 2009 notebookthat the Club will sell to all dogs lovers. We must say that every month there are more and more people competing at thiscontest and the quality of the pictures is getting better and better the use of PhotoShop is not allowed, that is the reasonwhy it is so difficult to vote only one out of a total of about twenty five pictures a month.During my visit to Kentucky for the Nationals I had the opportunity to see myself the wonderful work that theAmerican Pomeranian Club does. They are all a great example to be followed. We would like to thank Brenda for letting us share our work and activities with you by means of the PomeranianReview.Report by Maria Jose, President C.E.S.A., httpcesa.webcindario.com, presidente-cesahotmail.comCLUB ESPAOL DEL SPITZ ALEMAN2008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM74SeptOct 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEW - 752008 SEPTOCT REVIEW.p65 8182008, 1248 AM7576 - SEPTOCT 2008 APC POMERANIAN REVIEWRegional Pomeranian Club Specialty coming events are published free of charge. For updates and regional club contact information go to the APC website at httpwww.americanpomeranianclub.orgCOMING EVENTSSunshine and Roses are published free of charge.
